Hi, would you happen to know of any Vermont Hastings who traveled west to NY? I am looking for the family of Solomon Hastings, b. 20 March 1807 Halifax, Windham Co to David Hastings. Solomon married Minerva Bostwick, Sept 1835 in Busti, New York. Two sons were in the Civil War, one went to live in Sacket Harbor, NY...his name was Alexander B. Hastings. Would you have anything on that branch? Thank you for your help.
Richard

Haistings and McLean Families in Clermont, OH

From David Wilcox book on prominent men of Quincy and Adams County Illinois:

"Mr.[Wm.]Haistings was a resident of Adams County for about seventy years. He was born in Southern Ohio, in Clermont County, May 18, 1836, more than eighty-two years ago. His parents were William and Nancy (Law) Haistings. At the time of his birth his parents were tenants on the farm of an old river captain and boat owner, Captain McLean."

William and Nancy are my 3x Great Grandparents and I'm curious which Captain McLean this book refers to, as all the early McLeans were rivermen. Any clues would be most appreciated.
Hi,
Just in case you haven't searched on familysearch I did a quick search and found a Joseph Hastings born in New York City on 18 Dec 1886 to Thomas Hastings and Delia Osleun. Their are two Delia Hastings that died one in 1890 and the other in 1895. Then a Thomas who died in 1892.
Don't know if this helps but I thought I would give it a shot. You might be able to find adoption records from the Foundling also.

May I ask who you are? Don't understand why you are trying to locate Mrs Alexander’s papers & photo?

What was Mrs Alexander's age and first name? In the 1910 Census there is a 47 year old Lula Alexander living just a few doors from Bertha? Would make them former neighbors maybe even a friend of the family. Most of Bertha's life she lived within a few blocks until she moved to Detroit in the early 1950's.

Photos from before the mid 1950's even wedding photos with my parents, my uncles and both of my grandparents have been misplaced! Don't know if a photo of Mrs Alexander would have been included! My late uncle had a few photos but we didn't think about them when he died and now my aunt has also passed. Have you tried the local Black newspaper or the local photography shop?

There is a Alexander listed in the 1911 Louisville city directory as a teacher. If this is the same person she may have been Bertha's teacher, coworker, mentor or friend. 1928 would have made a 18 year friendship.

In the 1910 Bertha lived at 545 12th St!
In the 1915 when my greatgrandmother died she lived at 1328 W Chestnut!
In the 1920 Bertha lived at 427 16th St!

Thanks!

Bertha and Matthew Hastings are still living on Chestnut on the 1930 census. So it looks like Mrs Alexander was living with them. I wonder if she was a lodger or if there was any relationship. I don't know enough about the family of Newsome Alexander to know if there was a relationship, but she was pretty much an only child with no relatives in Louisville. She had outlived most of them.
Would you look at 1930 census to see if Bertha and/or the Hastings still were living that address for me please!

In the 1920 census they lived in that area but I can't read the form.

Do you know who Mrs Alexander was and are you related to her. Are you related to the Hastings?

My mother had said that they had a housekeeper when she was growing up maybe Mrs Alexander one! But I am trying to locate the papers or a picture of Mrs Alexander. The idea that Mrs Alexander might have worked as a nurse for the Hastings is interesting.
Hi,
The Informant on a death registration in KY is the person who filled out the death certificate. The address for both Bertha Hastings and Mrs Alexander was 1619 W. Chestnut St.
Mrs Alexander died of Breast Cancer. So it is quite possible that Bertha Hastings was the nurse in charge of filling out the paperwork.

The date of death March 16 1928 in Louisville, KY. Death registration for KY are on Ancestry.com

the Household of Ruth was a benevolent fraternal association linked to Odd Fellows. One of the thing they did was take care of the burials of their members.
Bertha Hastings might also have been a member, I don't know.
I think it is more likely that she was the nurse who attended the death of Mrs Alexander, and took care of contacting the funeral home etc. I was hoping she was related somehow, but I don't think so. I am guessing that Newsome Alexander is not in your tree.

Thanks for responding.

My interest is that in 1928, Bertha Hastings was the informant for an elderly Mrs Alexander, the widow of Newsome Alexander who was born in TN and died in Illinois.

Bertha Hastings might have acted as an agent of HOusehold of Rut for Louisville Lodge.

In what context do you mean informant? Agent? Could you send me more inormation? With more information like where did Mrs Alexander live? I could ask my uncle! My grandfather was from Tenn!

Bertha had been a school teacher and later became a Nurse! By 1928 she might have gone back to work? Her step mother & step sister were both in the insurance business.

A lot of people could not read at all or only read at grade school level. Most people did not graduate from High School! Some one might have asked her for help understanding a document or to fill out forms!

Just found on google "HOusehold of Ruth" was a social organization listed in "African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and the Vision"
Tamara L.
There's a birth record for Joseph that lists his mother as Margaret Murphy Hastings.

I suspect the "Snipes" is an an error made by the original person who entered the record. There is a "Snipe" family next to the Hastings on the census page.

Hope this is helpful.

Just curious ... On the 1900 Census for Margaret Hastings their are two other names listed, Margaret Snipes and Margaret Hasting. Does anyone know how to find out who added those names? I can not find any documentation that a Margaret Snipes married James Hastings. Thank you.

Does anyone know who this Hiram Hastings is -- his parents or siblings? Please see following news article.

I am interested because it's possible that my great-grandfather was named after him.

"Burlington Sentinel" (Vermont), Friday, 14 April 1843, p. 3
We learn from the Vt. Chronicle, that on Wednesday, 15th ult., a young man, about 20 years of age, by the name of Hiram Hastings, was found buried beneath the snow, about two miles from the village of Windsor, and near the foot of Ascutney mountain. On the preceding evening he had been to the house of a sick neighbor, for the purpose of administering to his wants, if necessary, and on returning became involved in a snow drift and perished.

Wiley is the son of Joseph Henry Hastings (1816-1873) and Mary Ann Blackwell (1828-1912). Joseph is descended from Henry C. Hastings (1727-1612) of Orange County, NC. Mary's family is from NC also but I know little about her ancestors.

I have a couple of blogs about Henry:

http://henrychastings.blogspot.com/

http://hastingsobits.blogspot.com/

Re: Hanora Hastings - Bruff Dromin Athlacca Limerick b abt 1815

Hi Brendan,
Honora O'Connor died April to June in 1904.
Bruff comes under the Registration area of Kilmallock.

There is a site called The Irish Family History Foundation.
Over the years they have been to every Church in Ireland and copied each page of the registration books or the Church record books. In Dublin, where I went to look last and also this year, they are on Microfilm, a bit time consuming but you do get there. BUT, you have to know the Parish.
So, good news, the IFHF have been entering these records on line, BUT they are not yet completed. County Sligo and County Limerick are the last 2 to be entered. I am waiting for Limerick. I bet you can't now!!!
I will get an alert when they are done and I will be there getting my info.
This IFHF site is now called Ireland Roots. the web add is.... www.rootsireland.ie It's 5 euro to get the record, but I will look first to see if they have it and I will let you know. It's the only way I got my Tipperary info, correct, as I have been given wrong info by a genaologist of all people.
The only Hanora I found was spelt Hanora Hastin....but we will wait for the update.
I did see the marriage of Thomas Enright and Margaret Dwyer was on the 9th January at the Cathedral in Limerick. he was 27 and she was 26. Her Father was Timothy Dwyer.
ENRIGHT... anyone by that name is related, they started in a place called GLIN at the top end of Limerick on the Shannon, just before you meet the County Kerry border. Some went west to Kerry some went east to Limerick City and mine John b1813 and Daniel b1815 went South to Shanagolden, Ardagh, Shanid and Coole. Then they started to scatter. Patrick Enright b1810 went to New Zealand with his family and a Thomas b1809 went to The USA.
The others went to Australia.
I am from John b1813.

If you would like some photo's of Bruff send me your e:mail address and I will send them to you. I took some last year for someone else. There is a Bluegrass Festival every October in Bruff, very well supported from the USA and Europe. It's a small place, there is 2 B&B's 4 pubs and a couple of shops and then lots of houses.
My e:mail address is......
marg2ade@yahoo.co.uk
I have 2 cousins in Australia that we have visited, Paddy was in Perth,(working in Meekatharra WA)when we went then he moved to Londonderry and Margaret is in WoyWoy.
We went everywhere except South Australia and Tasmania in 1995.
Bye for now
Margot

Margot
I got both your messages. great to hear from you. She married michael O'Connor 14 Feb 1836, lots of children but until recently I only 2 who both came to Australia.
Based on baptisms of those children she had siblings Alice, James and John - that I have found though I do not know anything else except they existed.
I also found her on Irish census 1901 but she appears to have passed away by 1911 I would say in Bruff.
I have no other info on Hastings. Anything you have much appreciated.
I currently have a private tree and I note you do as well.
Are you a decendent of Hastings?
I also have Enrights - Thomas married Margaret Dwyer [1864] in Limierick city and went to Australia [1865]. Father was John Enright and Margaret Brown.
Cheers
Brendan

Hey! I'm just now seeing your post, sorry. Yes, Nancy Hastings Houghton had a little brother named Gilbert Smith Hastings. Smith (he went by his middle name) married Mattie Carlin and they had a daughter, Johnny-Etta Bird Hastings in Fort Worth in 1880. Both Smith and Mattie died within a few years of that, possibly of cholera, and were raised by their aunt Fannie Carlin Callicott and moved to California.

The information I have is primarily based on census records and the narrative of John Daniel Jones who wrote the history of his maternal lineage - I think in the 1930's. He was a descendant of Nancy and Smith's elder sister Deborah Ann Hastings.

Re: Hastings in Washington Co PA

I'm looking for an Archibald Hastings, b. in Washington County, PA around 1807. He is last listed in PA in the 1830 Census, with a 4-person household consisting of two parents and two children under 5. He married Amy (last name unknown, b. around 1803) and moved to Ohio (1850 Census) and then on to Iowa (1860 Census and beyond). I would love any tips or hints as to his potential parentage and origins. Thanks!

I am not sure as to where I got England as a birth place. I am just starting back up after 10 years and lost much of my info due to a virus. Thank you for the information you provided. It is much appreciated. Now I just have to search for his parents after looking this over..
