Thank you Chris.

This process of searching is really amazing. I only started a few months ago. I never thought I'd find out so much. Especially here on the Haviland side. You see my grandfather was raised in an orphanage for a time until relatives took him in. I know very little because my grandmother(98) doesn't talk about any of these things. Even her side. I have only a little to go with and now there's a wall.

Since you are an expert in research... what kind of advice can you give to someone like me who hits a "wall" and gets stuck? One of the things I will be doing this summer is going to Vital Records in NYC to see birth records for the parents names. I think between spellings and shortening of the names are different that what I have found.

This has truly been an eye opening experience for me.

Thank You!
Hi Sue --

Here are my notes:

A) With regard to Sarah, wife of John Haviland: It is not certain if Sarah’s maiden name was Bergan, this is a guess.

Josephine Frost suggests her surname may be Stoughtenburgh, but only due to the names of the children. Other researchers have discounted that she could be a Stoughtenburgh.

Clues: (1) Daughter Jane married into the Bergan family, and it is not unusual for families to marry each other more than once in the same unit. (2) Son Benjamin mentions a cousin with the surname of “Bergan,” though this could be in reference to his sister Jane’s family. (3) An executor son John’s will was also a Bergan, however this could also be in reference to his sister Jane’s family.

B) The parents of of William Haviland (1606-1697) have been hotly debated. There is no real proof of who his parents were, but there are several possibilities. I currently have them listed as James Haviland and Thomassine Maindonail.

C) The parents of Christopher Havilland have been debated for a long time also. I have them as James de Havellande and Juliana de Sausmerez.

D) The parents of James are James de Haveilland & Helena de Beauvoir.

E) The parents of James Sr. are Thomas, Sieur de Haveilland and ??? (we don't know who the mother is, there is no record).

Warren -- the ancestors of Thomas, Sieur de Haveilland (the Jurat on Guernsey that we all descend from) is as far back as genealogists have ever been able to directly trace. There are various other names on record who lived before him, but we can't piece together a tree, as there just aren't any surviving records. I have seen various attempts at constructing a possible ancestry for Thomas but I have never seen any supporting evidence for the relationships.

The prevailing story is indeed that he came from a fief holder in Neustria, the fortress Abilant, as described here:
http://www.havilands.org

If you are descended from William Haviland of Newport, RI, I believe you are descended from Thomas' brother James de Haveilland, by his wife Helena de Beauvoir. James was Mayor of Poole in 1494 and 1498, and was the forefather of the Havilands in England and later America (the branches that became Haviland). Thomas was Jurat of Guernsey in 1474. He married Jenette Careye, daughter of Nicholas Careye and Katherine Perrin. They were the patriarchs of the Guernsey de Havilland families, which includes actress Olivia de Havilland and her sister Joan Fontaine, and their cousin Sir Geoffrey de Havilland (founder of De Havilland Aircraft). Are you descended from the de Havillands of Guernsey or the Havilands of England?

Hi Chris....

I know that now. I was reading all the past posts. I'm still in awe over how many people are doing their searches and how we're all related some how. I never thought in a million years I'd be able to get past my grandfather let alone our ancestors dating back to 1438.

Which brings me to a question....Thomas DeHavilland 1438-1535 is my 12 x Gr.Grand parent. He married Whom? I have two names. Helene DeBeauvoir 1450-1488 and Jenette Careye 1509-1609.

Alot of information starts to get mixed up. Says he married Jenette 1496 but she's not born until 1509.

Does anyone have the Haviland book that it might contain this information? Thanks Sue

We have been looking for their burial for many years, as they are the patriarchs of most of the Havilands in America and Canada. I've spoken to authorities in all of the burials and cemeteries around Great Neck / Little Neck areas of Long Island who know all of the oldest gravestones, and they do not know of William.

I suspect he and Hannah were buried by his son Benjamin, a Quaker preacher, in an unmarked grave (this group of Quakers in this time period did not mark their graves).

There is also the question of location... William and Hannah might have been buried on their own property in the Great Neck area, and since it was unmarked, that could now be underneath a building or a road for all we know. I don't know where exactly his property was. Or, they could have been living with one of their sons when they died, and despite records that assume he was buried somewhere near where he lived, he could have been buried where one of his sons lived.

Benjamin had settled in Rye, in Westchester county. If William and Hannah ever lived with him, Benjamin might have had them buried there. Unmarked grave, of course. His other son Jacob also settled there. His son John stayed in Hempstead (to the South of Great Neck) and was also a church warden. His son Joseph ended up in Shrewsbury, NJ.

Was Sarah's father named Joseph?

I am trying to sort out all of the Havilands of this time period, because I am looking for a particular Stephen Haviland who took his sons Stephen, John and Samuel to Maryland before 1798. The name changed to Heavilin, but DNA shows the family is the same. It's a big project to sort out all these families, but I've been working hard on it! Will gladly share info back and forth.

I'm sorry no. That name is not one that I have seen. That just means I was not looking for it. Good Luck with your searching. It took me 12 years to find proof of my brick walls father. Found it in the will of his brother. Search every where and any one who was around him. Remember, the search is the frustration and the fun. Good luck. Teri

Hi Melanie,
If you can tell me anything about your family, eg your mother's name and place of birth and grandparents names etc, then I may be able to help you, as I have an extensive Haviland database. Is your family in England or America or somewhere else? There are Havilands all over the world, but most originated from England (originally Guernsey) or Ireland (where the name was originally Havlin or O'Havlin).
Penny

Haviland Genealogical Organization - facelift

The Haviland / de Havilland Genealogical Organization web page http://www.havilands.org has had a small facelift, which includes a community portal. This portal will be important for harnessing contact information for future changes to the site, especially when the Haviland Wiki is prepared for public viewing. It's an ambitious project which I have had very little time to work on, but I'm pleased with the results in its rough draft form. It will provide a space for every individual in the Haviland / de Havilland family tree in Wiki format, allowing anyone to edit it for the latest information, photos, etc, or discuss issues. It will be linked with known references, primary and secondary, as well as links to parents and children and spouse and so forth.

The project is intended to include the entirety of Josephine Frost's narrative, with many corrections and additions, as well as the entirety of the earlier "Chronicle de Havilland."

So feel free to stop by and sign up as a member!

"Aunt Laura Haviland" Newspaper unknown
"A Brief Sketch of a Most Remarkable Woman"
"Remains to be brought here"
"Friends can view them at the home of Harmon Camburn"

"The death of Aunt Laura Haviland, occurred at Grand Rapids at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon, after a long illness.
Her remains arrived here Thursday at 10:10 p.m. over the Lake Shore railway and on account of the feeble condition of her daughter, Mrs. A. Camburn, and the distance from town of that residence they were taken to the residence of Harmon Camburn, 61 Dennis street, where the remains can be viewed from 12 Friday to time of funeral by her friends if they so desire. The funeral will be held at the Raisin Valley church on this (Saturday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, sun time.

The story of her life and its work is an interestin one:
Born in Kitley, Leeds county, Ontario, Can., Dec. 5, 1808, she removed with her parents to New York state and in 1826 was married to Charles Haviland. Soon after marriage they came to Michigan and settled on a farm in the township of Raisin, a few miles northeast of Adrian. No sooner had the Havilands taken up their Michigan residence than they turned their attention to the abolition cause. Being true blue abolitioniss they were not slow to show the depth of their feeling against slavery. They became identified with the great body of abolitionists in southern Michigan who assisted the slaves on their way to Canada and freedom. So well known becam Mrs. Haviland's sympathies with the negro and his cause that she was known far and wide as the president of the Underground Railroad. When the war broke out she started for the south. Under commission from Gen. O.O. Howard she was an inspector of hospitals.
She saw much service at the front and it was through her exertions that 3,000 Union soldiers held at Ship island and Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico, secured their liberty. This came about in a peculiar way. Mrs. Haviland, wearied with the onerous duties at the front, was to spend a few days at Ship island for rest. The ship taking her and her companion there left them without a word of explanation. Her companion was frightened and deplored their fate.
'The Lord has some duty for us to perform here', said Mrs. Haviland, 'or He would not have had us left here.' She held some services among the soldiers, who soon took kindly to her benign face and interest in them. She learned that the soldiers had been sent to the island for long sentences for small misdemeanors. This had been brought about by a judge advocate, Atosa by name, a southerner, who had entered the northern army and who had taken advantage of his position to get as many Union ment in military prison as possible.

Mrs. Haviland, convinced not only of the injustice being done the soldiers but also that the sentences were the result of a plot put in operation by a southerner at heart, soon enlisted aid to secure their release. After leaving the island she first laid the matter before F.C. Beaman, then congressman from this district, then she approached Zachariah Chandler, then a senator, and at last secured an audience with Secretary of War Stanton. Her work resulted in the men all being restored to the Union army.

At the close of the war Mrs. Haviland placed her energies at the disposal of the freedmen. She remained in Washington two years, giving them aid. When the exodus of colored people to Kansas occurred, she went with them and was secretary of their relief commission for two years.

Returning to Michigan she turned her attention to the education of girls. She visited prisons and jails in evangelical work, enlisted the aid of jail officials and women throughout the state and originated the plan which developed in the '70's in the Coldwater school. At her home near here previous to the war she was at the head of a preparatory school for teachers. When the war broke out the 17 boy pupils and the male teacher enlisted. On her return from the war, she re-organized the school and educated indigent colored children. Then indigent white children were sent to the school. She circulated petitions through-out the state for a public school of this kind, and during Gov. Baldwin's term she succeeded in getting an appropriation for the Coldwater school. Later she and Mary T. Lathrap were largely instrumental in securing the establishment of the state Industrial Home for Girls.

She had been for a long period identified with the temperance work and was one of the earliest workers in th historic woman's crusade. She spoke throughout the state and was a personal friend of the (article is cut off here)
Frances Willard, Susan B. Anthony ? T. Lathrap.
Linda-

A little more information that may help:

In 1870 there were two other Haviland families living in Greenwich Twp, Huron County, OH. Both of them were born in NY, too. It could be that they are the parents and brother of William.

Samuel Haviland, age 66, born NY, no occupation
Lavina Haviland, age 66, born NY

and enumerated next is:
Samuel Haviland, age 41, born NY, farmer
William, age 9, born Ohio
Eunice Wright, age 40, born NY, housekeeper

The younger Samuel died in 1910 in Huron County, OH. His parents were said to be Samuel Haviland and Lavenia Birdsell.

I believe the older Samuel Haviland died in 1887 in Toledo, OH. If so, he was said to be a physician and was born in Putnam, NY.
