My name is Ann Elizabeth Hawley, I was born in Painesville, Ohio in 1937. My father was Charles Samuel Hawley and My grandfather was Edwin Henry Hawley and his father was Dr. Charles Hawley married to Emma Burridge Hawley. I do have a copy of the Hawley coat of arms that says Suave Moi or Follow Me. The spelling is probably not correct on the French name. I know we originally came from England, but that's about all I know. Let me know if you think we might be distantly related.
Hulda Hawley Dodson

She seems to be a dead end w/ her marriage to Joel Dodson. Anyone know who her parents are? Both parents born in Connecticut. She was born in New York 1816, then married Dodson in 1840. The closest puzzle piece I've found is Lemuel Hawley , who married Betsy in 1816-Connecticut and moved straight to New York. They don't list Hulah as one of their children, though. I know others have her listed on their trees as a dead end too.
Susan

Hilon Hawley, d. NY 1832

I'm looking for information on the death of Hilon Hawley who died, possibly, 03 Nov 1832. He was living in Malone, NY at the time and may have died there, but there are some reports that he died in Keeseville, NY. I'm hoping someone has information on his place of death.

Note Hilon was born in Cornwall, VT, ca. 1791, son of John Hawley (Holley) and his wife Mary. Also note that Hilon had a brother Stephen Hawley who left Malone in the 1820s, was living in Peru, NY in 1830, and Stephen's widow was living in Au Sable, NY in 1840. Keeseville is a village within Au Sable, so there is possibly a family connection to Keeseville.

I'm trying to find out what became of my grandmother's father, Ralph William Hawley.

All I've been able to find are old census records (too old to tell what became of him) and draft registrations.

He was married at one time to Mary E Hawley, (Thayer) and we believe his birth was 1889, around there. The old census records say born in New York, and lived in Danbury Connecticut for a time.

I've searched find a grave, searched here, not a single website seems to know anything, and his other children are just as in the dark as to what happened to him as my grandmother is.

My grandmother was born in 1930, she was 14 when he disappeared.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Gertrude Hawley, West Virginia

Searching for info on Gertrude Jane (Lane?) HAWLEY, born 03 MAR 1901 in Raleigh Co. WV. She married John Hueling HONAKER in Saxon, Raleigh Co. WV on 10 APR 1917. She died September 1981 in Beckley, Raleigh Co. WV. She told family members that she was a Blackfoot Indian (we know that “Blackfoot” was a general term used in SW VA and WV by those of Indian and mixed Indian descent). Gertrude and John lived in Glen Rogers, Wyoming Co. WV in the 1930-1940’s. It is not known when they moved to Beckley, but John died there on 11 MAY 1964. Gertrude continued to live there until her death in 1981. The most interesting part, though, is she supposedly “taught English at an Indian reservation.” I can’t find any info on this “Indian reservation” or where she taught, or if it was Wyoming or Raleigh county. Does anyone have any info on this reservation, or a school, or on Gertrude Hawley’s Native American heritage?

I have James Madison Hawley 1845-1925 married to Delilah Frances (Wertz?) 1845-1933. One of their children was Hattie F 1880-1962 whose husband was Joel Madison Grisso 1878-1950. These families seemed to be centered around Roanoke, Va. I have information on their decendants, but I was wondering if anyone would have any information on their ancestors or parents. I see a couple family trees that have some information, but they do not have any sources listed.

Additionally how many different spellings of Hawley are there? I have seen Hawley and Holly on the censuses, but could others such Hale or even McHale be related?

Thanks

Some of this family were Quakers and you can find info in some of my other posts or in the Quaker record books. If I can locate this info, I will try to post it here for you.

Eunice Hawley Chapman

I just finished reading "The Great Divorce: A Nineteenth-Century Mother's Extraordinary Fight Against Her Husband, the Shakers, and Her Times" by Ilyon Woo. It is about Eunice Hawley Chapman, born 22 Nov 1778 to Elijah and Mercy Chapman of Bridgeport, Conn. Eunice married a widower, James Chapman, born 28 Oct 1763, a son of Phineas Chapman and wife Mary Hillier. James's first wife Temperance had died, leaving him to raise daughter Fanny. James and Eunice married and had three children: George, Susan and Julia. James joined the Shakers, taking his three youngest children with him. Eunice waged a five-year battle in the New York legislature and in the streets to win custody of her children.

My maiden name is Hawley. However, my birth father was never in the picture, and I know very little about the Hawley side. I know my grandparents names were Oscar F. Hawley and Vada ????? I have no idea what her maiden name was. They married and had 9 children, not in order but Ramona, Nell, Joyce, Mernie, David, O.V. (stood for Oscar Vada, he passed at very young age), Gary, Minnie Ann, and Judy. I think that's all of them. David is my father ad he was born in Cook County, IL on January 12, 1943. Vada passed when David was 14 which would be around 1957, and Oscar died via self infliction in 1971. However, thy had to have moved to the Mountain Home, AR area sometime around 1962 because that's when my mom married David. That's all I know. I don't know if we are in the same family, but hopefully the information I have will help you on some level. Have a great night.

Christy

Hi Nancy,

Here's what I know about the Selbys. Mercy was born 3/24/1786 and married my g-g-g-grandfather Chauncey Hawley in 1806. In 1814 or 1815 they moved from Sandisfield, Mass. to Paris Twp. in Portage County, OH. From the diary of my g-g-grandfather, Elijah (Mercy's son who was born 1815), there are numerous references to Uncles Ira (b. 5/10/1775), Brainard (b. 8/27/1779), and William Selby(b.10/27/1783). I believe Mercy's father, Brainard (b. 4/19/1751 in East Haddam, CT.) also moved to Portage county. I also have the senior Brainard as married to Mary Patterson (b.@ 1760 in Sandisfield, Mass.) I hope this is helpful. Please contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

Tom Hawley
tomhawley@ameritech.net

I am looking for information about May Hawley born around or before 1860, married George Sutton and had daughter Jennie Sutton (1878-1963). If anyone has any ties to May Hawley, I would love to hear from you.

Elizabeth HAWLEY / James CHARLES

I live in Canada and have not had any success tracing my GGGrandparents' marriage in Northern Ireland. I have the wedding certificate of their daughter, Elizabeth Jane CHARLES (aka Eliza Jane) born 12 Jun 1846 in Bangor, County Down, Ireland. She was married in Belfast on 22 Jul 1865 at St. Anne's Church of Ireland, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. But I cannot locate online any marriage for her parents James CHARLES (School Master) and Elizabeth HAWLEY, nor can I find Elizabeth Jane's birth or baptism record. The family was protestant and I did find the birth/baptism record of Elizabeth Jane's sister Mary born 03 Mar 1845 in Newtownards, Co. Down, Ireland. I do have the names of Elizabeth Jane's younger siblings with some general dates.

Does anyone have this Elizabeth HAWLEY in their tree?

Many thanks!
Diane
