Hello. Bill Hawn was my uncle. My Dad was James Phillip Hawn passed away 4/8/2008. I have been looking for info on my GrandFather William Burton Hawn and did not know my uncle was a Junior or even a 4th William Burton Hawn. I seem to reache a dead end with my Grand father. I cannot seem to be able to go back to the Hawns in North Carolina which is where I believe the Hawn's started back in the 1780s.

All we have is a picture - a very old one - that says to Auntie from Florance. We believe Auntie is Sarah Jane Dukes Brady. Sarah Jane and her father Jacob Dukes went from Illinois to Indiana in 1885-70 (a guesss). They spent time later in Arkansas with an uncle Sam Dukes who had a carpenter shop. Does any of this make sense to you?

Hello,
You are my ancestor and I have done lots of work on the Hawn Family Tree. Samuel was # 6 of 12 children.
From the Mifflin County Historical Society October 2002
We believe we have finally completed research on the Hawn/Hahn surname. We have uncovered the estate file for John Hawn which states that he died intestate in 1817 leaving his wife Catharine and twelve children - Daniel, Jacob, Mary, Catharine, John, Samuel, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Joseph, David and Isaac. We have enclosed many copies for you to review and digest. I feel the most important documents are the Orphan’s Court records which clearly state the connection between the family members. .....We were unable to find a burial site for John and Catharine. It is possible that Catharine remarried and is buried under a different surname and that John is buried in Mifflin County without a tombstone. Those children fourteen and under were assigned the following guardians: Elizabeth - William Allison, Joseph - Alexander Cameron, David and Isaac - James Fleming. John Hawn owned 375 acres of land at the time of his death in 1817. Three hundred seventy five acres was divided into 2 parts. One being 161 acres + 14 perches (a unit of area equal to 25.3 m2 (301/4 sq yd) (also called a pole)) valued at $4,669.25 and the second parcel containing 214 acres + 70 perches valued at $6,647.56. Jacob, second son, came to court and elected to take lot #1 and the other 11 refused to accept the residue (lot #2). Lot 2 was put up for sale on Nov 6, 1817 but no sufficient bidders appeared. The court granted the request to have the land posted again and it was put up for public sale again on Feb 13, 1818. At the sale on this date it was sold to Daniel Hawn (first son) of Derry Twp for $5,146.00.
Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files: Hahn John, Catharine, W3249, PA line, soldier’s son Joseph Hahn applying 24 Apr 1852, Mifflin Co, PA & stated that the soldier died 5 Apr 1817 & the widow died 13 May 1846 leaving children; Daniel, Jacob, Mary, John & Samuel Hahn, Sarah who married Charles (Naginey?), Joseph, David & Isaac Hahn, widow’s maiden name was Catharine (Hame?) & that she & the soldier had married in 1779.
Found under History of Juniata and Susquehanna Valleys of Pennsylvania: There was in early times a school-house built on the south side of Cameron’s Hill, on the property of Alexander Cameron (guardian of Joseph). It was built on what was then known as Potter’s road to Centre County, and near the present line of the property of Alexander and James Brown. This house was destroyed by fire. When the country became more thickly settled it became necessary to change the size of districts for the sake of convenience; consequently, the school-house on the north side of Cameron’s Hill was abandoned, and a new house was built a short distance north of Milroy, on the Hawn property, and was always known as the Laurel Run school-house. The first Laurel Run School-house was built of hewn logs, was eighteen by twenty-five feet, and had a shingle roof on it. The first teacher in the house was Samuel Kays. In 1825 John Hawn (fifth child) erected a frame clovermill on the east side of the creek, near the present Foster & Rutter tannery. It was used as a huller and cleaner until portable mills were introduced in 1843. A tannery was built in the town by James Milroy and a half-brother of Colonel William Reed. It was conducted later by William Keever (Catharine fourth child married John Cever(Keever)son) , Joseph Rothrock, Isaac Hawn (12th child), and before 1840 was in the possession of Samuel Thompson, who carried it on until 1849, when it was abandoned. In 1833 the citizens of Perryville (now Milroy) and vicinity united and built a small frame building on the property of Jacob Hahn (2nd child), about twenty-five rods west of the Fertig mill, on the north side of the public road. This house was used as an academy for females until September 30, 1837, when it was sold to the directors of Armagh township for seventy-eight dollars and forty cents, in full for the house and lot. John Hawn (ancestor) built a distillery in 1808, on a farm a short distance west of Milroy mill-dam; abandoned in 1810. Caleb Strowley erected a still-house at the end of Hawn’s Knob, near the north side of Jacob Hawn’s (2nd child) farm, after the others in the township were abandoned, except Sterrett’s.(Note: Joseph's dau married Robt Sterret)
Article:Revolutionary War Records of John Hahn (Hawn)
State of Pennsylvania,
Mifflin County
On the twenty fourth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred fifty two, personally appearing in open court ??? pleas in ?? for said county Joseph Hahn of Armagh Township in said county, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the act of ??? gratuity half pay and pension to certain widows. That he is the son of John Hahn a Revolutionary soldier, late of said county who died the fifth day of April AD 1817. And his wife Catherine Hahn who died at said Armagh Township Mifflin County on the thirteenth day of May AD 1846 leaving the following children viz Daniel, Jacob, Mary, John, Samuel, Sarah ( ??? with Charles Naggeny ???) Joseph, David & Isaac, all of whom are still living and that deponent is the administrator of said Catherine Hahn deceased, makes this application in trust for himself and his said brothers and sisters. That deponent well remembers his said father and mother and has heard from his father in his life time of his having served in the Revolutionary War, in the Flying Camp. Deponent does not recollect the officers name. And recollects of his speaking of being in the Battle of Long Island and also other battles and skirmishes, the names of which he cannot recollect. This before his fathers marriage to his mother. The precise time of his service cannot state. That deponents father and mother as he has been informed were married in Reading, Berks County in the year of 1779-1780. His mothers maiden name was Catherine Horner. That he has understood they were married by the Rev Wm Boas. That there is no family record of the marriage. That his said father served as a private during the time he enlisted as aforesaid.
Yes, Richard, I think we are related. John Hawn 1827-1883 was my ancestor. His son, David Riley Hawn, is the branch that includes my family. David Riley Hawn was born in 1865 and died in 1891. NOTE: Richard is a very common name in our family. The names David and Sam have also been carried down in the family. Most of my family continues to live in Indiana: SPeedway, Shelbyville, Connersville, COlumbus, Seymour. I never heard of Cayuga. I, however, have moved to Tennessee. Nice to meet you. If you have any questions I can help you with, I would be more than glad to. My direct e-mail is WindyCindyH@aol.com

Mrs. Tennie Hawn

My Aunt just sent me a newspaper clipping for A Mrs. Tennie Hawn, 54, dies of heart attack.
Mrs. Teenie Edna Hawn, 54, of 1903a State street, died of a heart attack about 3 p.m. Saturday at an Alton hospital where she had been a patient for two years. Mrs. Hawn, who was born in Hopkinsville, KY., lived in North Venice about 25 years before moving to Granite City 20 years ago.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Hawn; three sisters, Mrs. Louis (Lilliene) Mistoler and Mrs. Charles (Delores) Smith both of Madison and Mrs. Oscar (Bessie) Greathouse of Granite City; and three brothers, Edward Broyles of Granite City; and Donald and Harold Broyles both of Madison. Funeral arrangements are given in today's obituary column.
I have searched and searched and have not come up with anything that can help link her to my husband's family. His Grandmother was a Hawn.
I did find in the 1930 census Lillene age 12, Bessie age 9, Eddie age 7, Donald age 5 1/12 and Harold 2 6/12 with parents listed as Luther and Mattie. Just want to find a connection! Thanks in advance for any help.

Hawns/Hauns In Alabama

Greetings! I am searching for any information about some of my ancestors who lived in Alabama after the Civil War. I have letters written by one Andrew L Haun/Hawn. At the time the letters were written he was living in Jackson County. Here are some excerpts from one of the letters dated December 1877:

"I have been living in Jackson County for the last six years on the M and C Railroad and now working on the Scottsboro section. I worked a while under William McCarrel."

"Our post office address is Scottsboro Jackson County Ala. Adieu for this time to all from A L Hawn"

Andrew was born about 1829 in Knox County Tennessee and married Jane Rice in Knox Co in 1849. They moved to Alabama and I know very little of them after that. I do know that they had at least one child named William M Haun. He married Rhoda (unknown last name) and they had at least three children: Fanny, David and Mary.

I would love to find more info about Andrew and his family (including other children) as well as William's family; for example marriage records, birth records, property records, wills, and burial locations. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might start? If anyone who lives in Alabama can assist I would be very grateful. Please feel free to email me at lee@allgaierhawn.net

Thank you all,
Lee Hawn

Most likely its a match.

Elizabeth or Betty Hawn married a YOUNG

Looking for info on a Betty Hawn who had a son named James W. Young. Went by wesley. he was born 1861 in Ky. Father listed on James' death cert is John Jos/Jas Young. Can someone look for marriage record for a betty and john? John i think was born about 1829 and betty (guessing) 1830-35. I cant locate James W. Young on a census until 1900. By then he is married to a Sirilda Jane Williamson. James was also married to an Amy/Anna Blackburn.
