Re: Hawthorne/Robinson/Haines

I have been researching my wife's ancestors and ran across this item. As you may know from John Clark Hawthorn's obit. it said he moved to Coshocton Cnty with his parents when he was age 3 from Harrison Cnty. Thus, that is where I started looking. It seems he was born to Edward and Nancy Wadle Hawthorne in Green Twp, Harrison Cnty, Ohio on 8 Jun 1939. The 1850 census shows him living with his family in that location. Marriage records show that he married Charlotte Robinson on 5 Oct 1858. In the 1860 census he was living with Charlotte and possibly her mother and another youg boy still in Harrison Cnty. He must have left for the military around the time or shortly after his son (Clark) being born. The 1870 census finds Edward and Nancy and the some of the children now in Coshocton Cnty. Clark was with them at this time. I don't know when Francis and Charlotte separated but she later married James Hughes in Beford Twp., Coshoctton Cnty and had two more kids with him. He was almost 30 years older than she and he died in 1888. The 1880 census shows Clark now 17, living with Charlotte, her two other kids and James Hughes. She lived her last years with her daughter by him, Jane Louella Hughes, who married Orron Guthrie. Francis meanwhile married a Jane Allison in Hancock Cnty, WVA and had a daughter with her. After Jane Allison died in 1893, Francis came back to Bedford Twp in Coschocton and marred Mary Noland of West Carlisle in 1906. After she died he moved in with is daughter, Elizabeth Hawthorne Manypenny, who was living in North Benton, Ohio and he died a few months later on 3 Aug 1913 at around 80 yrs of age. The Obituary in the Coshocton newspaper described him as a former West Carlisle resident who had lived his whole life in the region except for the last few months when he lived in North Benton. I think this might be a little misleading as he was away more than he was there. I hope this helps. If you have any questions contact me at tomeed19@centurylink.net.

We are related! Hazel was my Great-Grandmother. I am having the same problem finding any information about Francis Hawthorne. I can not find any record of him after 1863 so I thought maybe he was drafted into and was killed in the Civil War. I have been vigourous searching Civil War records and there are actaully no less than 6 Francis Hawthorne in the Union army during that time period. It is unclear whether we died during teh civil war and ran off and never returned to Charlotte. As for his origins and his parents, I have hit a brick wall in finding information there as well.

I am trying to gather information about Wilson Hawthorn(e) (born about 1834) in Lunenburg County, VA. He later moved to Alabama and then to Mississippi. He was married to Jane (born about 1834) and they had a son named Willis (born about 1864). Both Wilson and Willis may have also been known as “Willie”. In 1880 they lived in Bethel, Wilcox, Alabama.

Lillian Graham Hawthorne Jones

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Lillian Graham Hawthorne Jones a.k.a. “Lil,” “Mom” and “Grams,” was one of a kind woman who lived her life to the fullest, gave her heart, time and attention to her family and community, and quietly broke barriers, blazed trails and brightened the world she graced.

Lillian was born on April 26, 1934, in Meigs, Georgia to Leola and Ulysses Graham.
In 1941, Lillian and her younger brother, James, moved to Youngstown, Ohio with their parents who traveled north in search of a better life for their family.

Even as a youngster, Lil was always industrious and often a “first.” At 14, she landed her first job, working as a clerk in a neighborhood grocery store, where she learned to stock shelves and run the cash register.

A talented and dedicated student, Lillian attended South High School, where she was elected to the National Honor Society.

Always a “multi-tasker,” Lillian juggled her roles as a young wife and mother and student at Youngstown State University, earning a B.S. in Education. During this time, she became the first director of the Pearl Street Methodist Center Head Start Program and later was the first person of color to work for the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Youngstown.
She also found the time to serve as Youth Advisor to the Youngstown chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was a Cub Scout den mother.

In 1971, Lillian moved to Maryland, where she was an elementary school teacher in the Montgomery County Public Schools.

In 1975, Lillian married Nathaniel R. Jones and moved to Ridgewood, N.J. Shortly thereafter, Lillian was recruited by the HoHoKus Public Schools, where she taught elementary school. Her caring, special skills and expertise in teaching children led the school district to designate her a Specialist in Individualized Instruction.

When Nathaniel was appointed in 1979 by Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, he and Lillian moved to Cincinnati. Over the past 32 years, Lillian has become a beloved member of her adopted community. Among the numerous organizations to which Lillian lent her time and talent are the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Every Child Succeeds, Dress for Success, NAACP, Cincinnati Opera, and the Alice Paul House.

Although Lillian never sought accolades or attention for her work, she was honored by the Cincinnati Enquirer as a 2003 Woman of the Year. “Lillian Jones had a heart big enough for a husband, three sons, a daughter, six grandchildren.”

In addition to her volunteer activities, Lillian was a popular and active member of several social and civic organizations, including the Links, the Sophisticates and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Lillian leaves her devoted husband, Judge Nathaniel R. Jones; three sons, William Hawthorne of Atlanta, Rick Hawthorne of Cincinnati and Marc Hawthorne of Atlanta; a daughter, Stephanie Jones of Washington, D.C.; her brother, James Graham of Cincinnati; six adored grandchildren, Lauren Hawthorne, Tayler Hawthorne, Christopher Hawthorne, Brooke Hawthorne, Cory Hawthorne and Sydney Hawthorne; three daughters-in-law, D’Anna Logan Hawthorne, Stephanie Mitchell Hawthorne and Celeste Perry Hawthorne; two sisters-in-law, Lula Graham and Allie Jean Wooten; nieces, Felicia Graham and Carlisa Graham; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lillian Graham Hawthorne Jones was a daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend. Her lilting soprano voice could caress light opera, belt the blues, croon Christmas carol and tickle grandbabies’ fancies with silly songs. She made the best turkey sandwiches ever. She was beautiful and sweet and funny and fun. She made our world so much more beautiful, elegant and special.

Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at the Zion Baptist Church in Cincinnati.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, 50 E. Freedom Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202, Zion Baptist Church, 630 Glenwood Ave., Cincinnati OH 45229, Hospice of Cincinnati Inc., P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, OH 45263 and Advocates for Youth Education Inc., 8425 Gwilada Drive, Cincinnati, OHIO 45236.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home in Cincinnati.

Local arrangements entrusted to the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home in Youngstown, OH.

I'm trying to find info on William Hawthorne in South Carolina. He was b. in SC in 1805 and died in 1863 in Ohio. He was married to Catherine Taggart. I believe he had a brother named Thomas Hawthorne who moved his family to Ohio at the same time.

Does anyone have any info on where they were born in SC and who their parents were?

Nathaniel HAWTHORNE; b. July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Page 37

NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE.

Whatever charm the career of Nathaniel Hawthorne may offer to the public as a master of romance in the field of literary art almost exclusively his own, it is conceded universally that the facts of his life offer little opportunity for the biographer. He was a native of the old town of Salem, was born on Independence Day, July 4, 1804, and died at Plymouth, New Hampshire, May 18, 1864. One well known biographer considers that his work is therefore his record, and the procession of his ideas as successfully formed in the pages of his books are his only satisfactory and everlasting monument. His character owes much to heredity. His ancestors were of the established Puritan stock in an ancient seaport town, and some of them as a matter of course were seafaring men. His early days were particularly uneventful. His education was obtained at his birthplace and at Bowdoin College, Maine, where in 1825 he was graduated. Among his early instructors and his classmates were several distinguished men: Dr. Joseph E. Worcester, the lexicographer, John S. C. Abbott, George B. Cheever, Jonathan Cilley, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, President Franklin Pierce, Calvin Ellis Stowe, and others. In early life he lived with his mother in the woods of Raymond, Maine, for a period of one year, but after he left college he returned to Salem to live. For twelve years following he was a recluse, and read or wrote by night or say as suited his fancy. He published his first story at his own expense, and only a few hundred copies of this early production were sold. He did considerable stated work for various publications anonymously between 1830 and 1836, but in 1837 he collected the first series of "Twice-Told Tales," followed in 1845 by the second, both in 1851 being reissued together. After 1850 his works and his popularity increased. In 1850 his second novel, "The Scarlet Letter," was issued, and undoubtedly it is the best known and remarkable work of his wonderful genius. The analysis of his writings and their titles is not the object of this article. As a distinguished writer has said, they all bear the mark in common of being early products of the dry New England air: incorporating myths and mysteries of old Massachusetts, including chapters of the fanciful, bathed in a misty moonshiny light, completely neglecting the usual sources of emotion. His most touching peculiarity was his aloofness; he was outside of everything, an alien everywhere ― on the surface ― the surface of the soul and the edge of the tragedy ― he preferred to remain.

His life is very briefly written. In 1839 he received through influential friends an appointment to a small place in the Boston custom house. In 1841 he spent a few months in the Brook Farm community. He was married in 1842, and lived at Concord till 1846, when he obtained a position in the Salem custom house, and returned there to live. He also resided for two years at Lenox, Massachusetts. In 1853 he was appointed consul to Liverpool, and he resided afterwards for about seven years in England, France and Italy. He returned to the United States in 1860 and resided again at Concord. Early in the year 1864 his health began rapidly to fail, and in May, 1864, he went with ex-President Pierce to the White Mountains, and when they reached Plymouth, New Hampshire, May 18, Hawthorne died in his sleep.

The impression of his contemporaries in Salem regarding him are interesting. He led among them a quiet and secluded life, characterized by shyness in school, and inconspicuousness in college. His earliest literary work was anonymous, and he was first supposed by his readers to be a woman, who possessed among other qualities, great delicacy of fancy. The volume of "Twice-Told Tales" first brought him a recognized position in the literary world and an enthusiastic welcome. His various official positions were conferred solely for his merit as an author. The supernatural element in his work he allowed nothing to interfere with. His love for personal solitude was his ruling passion. He had no fondness for social pleasures, and never entered into them.

"These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind."

ANCESTRY. ― William Hathorne ( I ), of Salem, Massachusetts, was a son of William and Sara Hathorn of Binfield, Berkshire, England; he was born about 1607, died at Salem, Massachusetts, 1681, in his seventy-fourth year; wife Anne. He was one of the most able, energetic, and widely influential men in New England in his day; was commissioned captain in 1646, and major before 1656.

Hello! I am looking for any information people might have on Mary Grace Hawthorne/Kinnison and her parents. She was my Great-Grandmother and all I know is that her parents died in a car accident in 1922 or 1923. She was about 2 or 3 so she, naturally has no memory of them. She said that her father was Pearl Hawhthorne and her mother was Vadia Durst/Hawthorne. I have found some information on a Vadie Durst that seems to match up, but nothing linking Vadie having a daughter or any family beyond her mother, father and siblings. I have no information on Pearl. Grandma Mary Grace said that she was born in Charleston, WV.
I would love to know ANYTHING if I could! Thank you in advance!
She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Roy Hawthorne, of Roberts, and one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Frobish, of Chatsworth; three grandsons and one granddaughter, namely Wesley and LeRoy Hawthorne, Eldon and Arlene Frobish. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death, Baby Hawthorne, at the age of six months and Myrtle, wife of Louie Ristow, in August, 1925.
She was a member of the M.E. Church, Ladies' Aid, Home Missionary and Pythian Sisters. The latter attended in a body.
Hello,

I have a Hawthorn branch at www.gingell.ca. Hawthorn/Turner related families have been researched by many people, some in great depth. I have, to this point, mostly just used some others' research regarding Hawthorn/Turner. I did research my Hawthorn great grandmother (Agnes Hawthorn) and have posted a couple of photos of her at my web site. My main interest is in the photos.

I believe that 'my' Hawthorn branch came from Ireland. But for a several generations lived in the English county of Berkshire, primarily around the Ascot/Sunninghill area.

If this is any kind of a 'match' I'd be pleased to put you in touch with 'serious Hawthorn reseachers'.

Regards,

Alex

James Hawthorne, Milly Rollen in Ireland and Kentucky

James Hawthorne was born in Ireland, died before 1826 in Henry Co., KY. He may have been a physician as the appraisal of his estate in 1827 listed medicine scales and vials. He married Mildred "Milly" Rollen in June, 1796 in Franklin County, Kentucky, with George Rowland as bondsman.

James and Milly had four children: Dr. William Hawthorne, Martha, Isabella, and Sarah. Dr. William married Nancy Ogden, and they had six children, including Dr. Motison Ogden Hawthorne, born 1827 in Ballard Co., KY.

Any further information about this family would be greatly appreciated!
