Patrick (Peter) Hay of Charlestown and later Stoneham, Mass

I am looking for some more info on the family of Patrick, also called Peter, Hay of Charlestown and later Stoneham, Massachusetts. Per his gravestone record in Stoneham's vital records, he died "Apr. 1, 1748, in his 91st y.", so he was born about 1658.

Per the History of Stoneham by William Stevens, he had 4 wives - I can find records of 1) Mary Kibbee, whom he married in 1685. She died in 1694. 2) Sarah, with whom he had children in 1696 and 1699, - no marriage recorded. She died in 1729. 3) Susannah Davis, no children recorded and no marriage recorded, but her estate was settled in Middlesex County in 1734. and 4) Ruth Pierce whom he married in 1742. She survived him.

I am most interested in finding the maiden name of his 2nd wife Sarah. I found a report in the Boston Evening Transcript, Sep 8, 1902 p. 12 (available on-line at Google News Archives) where W.F.B. (I assume this is Wilton F. Bucknam, who compiled the genealogies of most of Stoneham's founding families) states that Sarah's maiden name was BARRETT, but he gives no source for this information.

Does anyone have any clue where he could have gotten this info?

Thanks,

A Hay descendant

Alan died on the operating room table because of being gassed in WW1 at Ypres and Paschendale and
possibly one other battle.
Margaret Hay married John Allen in crail fife 1835
this is the only one i could find on the lds site but trying to find your margaret hay is like looking for a needle in a haystack theres over 50 births of a margaret hay between 1811-1815. when you find the person in a census depending on the person taking the census sometimes the birth year might be rounded up to the nearest 5 or 0 for example if the birth was 1812 its likely to go down to 1810 if its 1817 it might go up to 1820. so always try to check a 5 year span

I have from family records that William and Mary Elizabeth Sandsberg/Stansbury were married in Laurel county, Kentucky on 5 October 1833. Family information handed down, no written proof. Thanks to all who answer.

Hay Family - regarding Turnbull relatives

This is further information about the two sons of James Turnbull and Elizabeth Hay: Robert Hay Turnbull and Alan (Mike)Turnbull as listed on the family grave stone.

The information below comes from the Archives Canada Upper Canada College as well as the Bank of Hamilton, and the book held by the 48th Highlanders at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and the Cemetery offices at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. It has also been take from the military files for the first World War 1914/1918 Attestation Papers, and can be checked by anybody.

Lieut, Robert Hay Turnbull, Sone of James Turnbull and Elizabeth Hay, Bank Manager of the Bank of Hamilton. Private tuition Upper Canada College. Age 12 - 16 Boarder, Presbuterian, 45 Chestnut Park Road, Toronto, Financial Broker, Lieut., 19th Battalion 2nd CGET. wounded at St. Eloi April 2, 1916. He suffered from shell shock and apparently both arms and some ribs were broken, (Note: St. Eloi was known for major and dangerous craters which often fell in on soldiers. He was relieved of duty due to shell shock. He died by his own hand (pistol) in Toronto Septem 1933 at 45 Chestnut Park, Toronto. (See Mount Pleasant Cemetery Records He said it was so his Greey nieces could inherit. Their Mother was his sister, Constance Greey, - see tombstone Mount Pleasant Their grandfather James Turnbull did not include them in the will because they inherited from their Father...Greey. Mother Constance Turnbull Greey also died early in 1926.
*****

Major Alan Turnbull,
Son of James Turnbull and Elizabeth Hay, Manager Bank of Hamilton, Home: 45 Chestnut Park Road Toronto,
Mechanical Engineer
Education: Upper Canada College
Prize List: 1904 Form 2A, History and Geography and Classics, Alan Turnbull
McGill University, Alan Turnbull Mechanical Engineer
He also played Rugby for McGill
Joined the Army in 1915 - Canadian Expeditionary Force
Alan Turnbull Lieut. 35 Battn. 34d. CEF Captain 1916 - Then Major -
48th Highlanders Military Cross November 16, 1916 wounded, wounded November 1917, Wounded August 1918. Returned to Canada May 1919.
His name is mentioned in the book about the 48th Highlanders which is held in the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church: Pages 147, 170, 182/3, 127, 224, and 6, 234/5, 255/67/8, 276/277, 8 and 9, 308 331/22, 323/4. He served at many of the worst battles in the first world war, Ypres, Paschendale, etc. When he was wounded for the last time in August 1918, they had no one who could carry him to first aid station, but the Germans were surrendering in quantity, "so he was given a pistol for the German prisoners who would carry him, and a bottle of Scotch for the pain."

Died on the operating table probably from the gas at Ypres (twice,) on June 25, 1933. He married Margaret Jardine Edgar (Madge) in June of 1930. (Somewhere I have the exact date if you need it.

Please note that both men listed James and Elizabeth as their parents and the same address.

It is noted in his file that Mrs. J.B. Kay, Goring Hotel, Grosvenor Gardens, London S.W. or John B. Kay, 52 Wanastay (sp.?) Gardens. High St. Kensington W. were to be notified. He went to them on times that he had leave.

He married in June 1930 and died June 25 in 1933.

His widdow Madgee Edgar (noted on tombstone) gave the child born to them to her brother and his wife and took off for points around the world with her new found wealth. The agreement with the foster parents was they would receive quarterly sums of money for their expenses and that nobody should know the child was not theirs. They managed this. I was always taller than everyone else in the class and puberty came early! It is thought that the monies had been left to the child in trust, but Madge broke this. Her friends were angry at her.

In 195054 I was working for the Thompson Newspaper chain when Madge/Lynn's best friend Helen Sparling made an appointment to see me at the Richardson Stock Brokerage house. She seemed to think I had money to place. I had to disabuse her of that notion.

When Madge/Lynn returned to Toronto in the late '50's nobody would entertain her - memories are long. She moved to Vancouver. She clothed the child including winter clothes and shoes, except during the years after, 1941-1948 of the war and immediately following. She escaped in 1942 but went to Africa with her husband to Johannesburg after the war. Please see new note below. Her brother's wife found another woman's child not to her liking -

Madge Lynn sent me to Europe on my 21st birthday for two months and also sent my son to europe when he was 21. She didn't do it for any other family - althoguh the agreement said she was supposed to treat any children her brother and his wife had were to be treated equally.

I simply feel that anyone as brave as Alan (Mike) Turnbull
should not be cut out of his rightful place in the family. He is someone to be proud of and he suffered enough and as a veteran of that dreadful war which eventually killed him he should be honoured.

Bagnall, Sir John and Lady Bagnall

Chmn and Mng.
Hello Dianne, My gggrandmother Mary Montezena nee Hay, according to her death certificate, was the daughter of John and Eliza 'Hayes' of Tasmania. The Eliza Hay who married Peter Sorry was related. My ggrandmother Annie McMillan nee Montesena called her 'aunty' and Eliza Sorry helped 9yr old Annie and her siblings after their mother Mary died in 1883. Eliza Sorry was the daughter of William Hay and Eliza McCarthy. But who are the parents of Mary Hay? I have not been able to track down a birth reference for Mary. Could your cousin give some clues?

Hello
There are many misspellings in the transcripts of various registers. I have Heyshaw - first names William Clayton, wife Maria Elizabeth and also George Clifford Berkeley Heyshaw married Louise Mabel Coleman. I have been exploring the Hay Shaw possibility as the name Heyshaw is just too unusual. The British people in India found it very fashionable to hyphenates when marriages took place. I have Glyn-Coleman or Glyn Coleman and Glynn Coleman for example. I beleive this this from North Country and Scottish naming patterns taking the mothers surname as a middle name and the fathers surname and this often becomes a new surname. Does this help?? Kind regards Shayne

Does anyone know if a DNA study has been done to link William Hay and his descendants back across the pond to the Hay Clan of Scotland?

The Compendium of American Genealogy, Dr. Wm Hay (ca. 1684-1783) of Scottish family of Earl of Erroll: born in Scotland but came to America approx. 1717. Had to leave Scotland because of civil warfare over religious questions. Escaped by being smuggled on board ship in a whiskey keg. Disherited by family for marrying an American. Was a schoolmaster and physician.Married Abigail Boutwell born 1696--

Don't know if this is true or one of those "Family Legends" which make genealogical research so difficult.

Thanks
Just for the sake of clarification and because I wish someone could help me find some information on this woman... Henry Hay that married Eunice Roberson, was first married to Judea Baker. It's on Margaret Elizabeth's death certificate.
Other than that... there is ABSOLUTELY NO info on Judea. Apparently she just popped up long enough to have a kid or two and then disappeared.

I can help you as I believe we are cousins. My grandfather was Robert Hay, younger brother of your grandfather William. Robert emigrated to Dobbs Ferry, New York in the 1920's with his wife, Lucy, and two daughters. They had another daughter, Claire Hay , who is my Mom - still alive and kicking at 81.

Isabella came to America after the death of her husband William (our g-grandfather); lived with my grandparents, and is buried here as well.
I'd love to know the results, and I really wish someone could end this mystery that has been told to the family for hundreds of years. I don't doubt there is a connection with the Hays in Scotland and France...and Germany was right in the path and frequently visited by these people so it could make sense. I just want to know WHAT the connection was.

Re: Robert Hay - Tayside SCT & CAN - Robert Hay son of Elizabeth Hay

I believe I am the grand daughter of Elizabeth Hay and James Turnbull. The information you have appears to be incomplete.

The tombstone is in Mount Pleasant Cemetery just off Mount Pleasant Road at the Main Entrance, right hand side.

This couple had 3 children and lived at 45 Chestnut Crescent in Rosedale.
James Turnbull
b. Sept 9 1849
D. Feb 5 1931 82

Elizabeth Hay Born April 24 1857
D. March 22 1932 74

Rob Hay Turnbull
Jan 19 1880
Sept 7 1933 (age 53) was wounded out as 'shell shock' at the Battle of Eloi. The family bought a farm for him not far from Port Credit. He committed suicide in early September, 1933 - because the Greey Grandaughters did not inherit at James Turnbull's death (he felt they inherited
enough from their Father.

Constance Hay, M. Greey, She died in 1926 or so and her husband in 1930. Two Children - Elizabeth and Mary Greey - Mary had two daughters, Constance and Laura
Elizabeth who only died recently. Mary Greey had a daughter Laura who is in Ottawa at War Museum in charge of the art program. Some of this info comes from this source.

Alan Turnbull Nov. 22 1881 Known as ‘Mike” Graduated in Mechanical Engineering McGill U. in Montreal – both boys attended Upper Canada College. Enrolled in 48th Highlanders and went overseas - wounded 3 times - the last time in August 1918. He was gassed 2 or 3 times at Ypres. He was a Major at that time he came home and was decorated specifically with the Medal of Merit. He is cited in the book about the 48th Highlanders several times
Dates: born 1881 He died June 22 1933 - appendix but gas at Ypres can really be blamed.

M. June 1930.m.Madge Edgar

Madge was born in 1898 in Sterling Scotland - m. to Alan Turnbull in 1930 at age 32 when she married and 88 when she died in Victoria B.C. Her ashes like Mike Turnbull's were buried at sea off the Pacific Coast on her instructions.

She paid for this child's clothes, education and marriage etc. as well, often as her grandchildren's clothes and trips to Europe.

She married again in November 1934 to John Bagnall later knighted.

I am trying to find out about Alan/Mike and Madge's female child - who was given to Madge's brother shortly after Alan died and raised by John Edgar and his wife Dorothy Walker Edgar both of Edmonton. Madge Edgar m. John Bagnall, President of the Straits Trading Company, Singapore who was Knighted about 1936 In Singapore. They escaped separately in February of 1942, reunited in India and lived afterwards in Johannesburg.
