I may be late to the conversation, but, FWIW, I am also related. My grandmother was Lottie Mae Pilcher, born Goshen, Washington, AR who married Frank Johnson in Tahlequah, Cherokee, IT.

My mom, Mary Edna (JOHNSON) Mott and I met with Cleo Combs when we took a special family-ties trip through Tahlequah and the area. Molly Fields Cemetery is truly hallowed ground.

I was excited to be able to track the family in the 90's and now all that footwork starts to pay off, but too late for mom. She died in 1994, as did my dad, also from OK.

I will try your old email addresses, but I know that I have changed several times, so success is a sometime thing.

Best wishes.

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. DENNIS (MARY DORGAN) HAYES
AUGUST 6, 1909

Mrs. Dennis Hayes, for years a resident of Charlotte township, died at the family home three miles south of Remington, Ind., on Friday (July 30) morning, July 30, at 3:30 o'clock, death being caused by cancer of the stomach. Mrs. Hayes had been confined to her bed for three months previous to her death, but had been an invalid for fifteen years.
Mary Dorgan was born in county Cork, Ireland, in May 1843. She came to America in 1866, and after landing in the United States came directly to Ottawa, Illinois. In 1870 she was united in marriage with Dennis Hayes. Two children, one son and one daughter, were born to the union, who, with the aged husband, survive her. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hayes moved to Pontiac, and in 1877 they moved to a farm in Charlotte township, where they resided for twenty five years, leaving this community in 1902 and moving to the farm near Remington, Ind. where the family home has been since.
The funeral services were held on Sunday at 2:30 o'clock at the church of the Sacred Heart, at Remington, the services being conducted by Rev. Father Hortaman, and the interment was at the Remington Catholic cemetery.
The beaveaved husband, daughter and son have the deepest sympathy of their many friends in this community in their sorrow.
Hi I am looking for info on a Jesse Hays(Hayes). We have no idea when or where he was born, but believe around maybe 1760, as his wife Nancy or Ann Dickerson was born around 1760, but they were married July 1782 in Wilkes County NC, and we know he died in 1810 in Wilkes County, We understand all the records were burnt in the Civil war I guess, so we dont know who his father was, or where any of them came from, but we thought he had a brother Joseph, maybe even a Reubin
Shirley Hayes

Stephen T Hayes (1832-1902) is my 2d Great Grandfather. I have his parents as Adam John Hayes (1807-1885) and Mary Anne Messenger (1813-1870). I can trace the Hays side fairly well, and I Think I have the correct Messenger side also. Where I get stuck is with Martha Silliman (1795-1880), the supposed mother of Mary Messenger. So, looking for information for the Silliman side specifically. Most of what I have found does not match with what I need. Thanks in advance!

Re: Hayes - New Brighton, Cheshire

Hi Victoria,

I have Hayes records of interest in the census from 1911 back to 1841 and some christening records from FamilySearch.

From your G Grandmother Annie she is in the 1911 census (age 13) living in 22 Shiel Road NB with all the family bar Albert who I guess has become a new branch which I didn't trace. She is in the 1901 census (age 3) at 38 Pleasant st NB with all the family (6 kids). William (28)and annie (30)are in the 1891 census at 3 Sandrock Rd NB with 3 kids and I have a christening record for Albert. William is a Joiner and stays a joiner all the way through.

In the 1881 census william (18) is in Magazine lane NB with Ellen Hayes (widow 51)who is his Grandmother and his brother John (13) and Ellen's son James (27) m to Sarah (23)and their son John(1). Ellen is a Team Owner ( A team of horses as in horse & Cart) and James is a Carter.

The census of 1871 shows Ellen (44) married to John (53)with kids (Elize (24) William (21) James (17) Annie (15) and John (13). This William is married to Maria and are my Great GrandParents and there are 3 Grandsons in the house William (7) Fred (5) and John (3), these turn out to be Eliza's kids as she is already a widow at 24, this raises the question as to how Eliza and her kids are still Hayes, this is explained by the marriage of Thomas Hayes (father William) to Eliza Hayes (father John) 24 Nov 1862. I have not been able to trace this Thomas (father William). They all live on Magazine Lane NB which is recorded as "Hayes Yard".

In the 1861 census John (40 Blacksmith) and Ellen (33) have Eliza (14) William (11) James (8) Hannah (5) John (3) all living in Magazine Lane NB, this is not long after the magazines which the lane is named after were closed and moved away as the area was begining to become more populated. Hannah (5) would seem to be Annie (15 in 1871) so I looked for a christening and found 1856 Hannah in St Peter's Liverpool , family resident in Liverpool, but born Egremont.

In 1851 John & Ellen are in Tobin St which leads to Egremont Ferry with Eliza and William both born Wallasey and I have found christenings for them both, and also living in the same house is Thomas Dean (13 Brother in Law), I have been unable to follow the Dean side anywhere.

John was born Barnton which is a village in Cheshire just to the North of Northwich and the 1841 census shows James and Ellen Bratt (Blacksmith) with 4 kids who are all Hayes; John (Blacksmith), George, Mary, and Ann, so why Hayes not Bratt? There are christenings for George, Mary, and Ann which name James Hayes (Blacksmith) as their Father and Ellen as their mother, so I assume that James Hayes died and Ellen was into blacksmiths.

The story isn't quite over in that although I cannot find records in 1851 in 1861 the James ( master blacksmith) and Ellen Bratt are in Wallasey (Liscard) with a daughter (Ann ????? 38 born Barnton) 2 of her kids (5 and 2) and a granddaughter Hannah Hayes (6 born Barnton) ((I can't quite make that work for me)).

John's Brother George is also in Wallasey 1861 now living in the Tobin street property, with kids. This branch can be followed through to 1891.

So it looks like James and Ellen Brett left Barnton with kids for New Brighton when it was being built, in 1830 Atherton and Rowson bought Sanddunes and gorse scrub and started building NB.

One last note there is a book called "Barnton - through changing scenes of life" which states on page 28, "When the Newall family moved, the role of smith in the village was taken on by James Hayes who had moved from Frodsham".

If you want more e-mail me directly (delete the stars) A*l*a*n@agsite0.flyer.co.uk.

HTH

William died in 1968 and Annie in 1993.What I know about their parents is very limited.

William's dad Dennis was from Ireland and Annie's family was from Wales. Her mother died when she was seven and she was adopted in the U.S.

I have traced the Stetson side of the family back to Modbury, South Devon.Robert Stetson was born in 1613.

Happy hunting, Larry

Thank you for replying! That is of enormous interest, as it's the Hayes side of the family that my mother is most interested in tracing, and so far I've not had any luck at all, really. I'd be tremendously interested in anything that you have found. Also, I guess we must be some sort of distant cousins! William and Annie Hayes are my great-great-grandparents. :) So, pleased to meet you!

Best wishes

Victoria Redfern

I came across your post and am also looking for information on Hayes ancestors. This is quite a long shot I really have very little information on them. This is what I do have. My great grandmother was Julia Hayes (married name Monahan) born in 1869 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. On her marriage certificate her father is listed as John Hayes. I believe he was born about 1846 and came from the USA to Saint John, New Brunswick, he married Mary McCarthy. I believe that he came from Massachusetts because when Julia passed away several of her children went to relatives in Mass. I found a couple of border crossings on them with the following two names listed: Uncle Maurice L. Hayes, 74 Hayes Avenue, Mass and another border crossing with Aunt Mrs. Nellie Hayes, 12 Long Avenue, Northhampton, Mass. Do either of those names sound familiar? I see you have a Maurice Hayes in your post. Thanks!
Kim

Thank you. I did have it. I also have her obituary and unfortunately it only mentions the Hayes family members as her survivors. Her sister, Catherine, had died prior to Mary's passing but I find Catherine's husband Thomas Hayes living at the Duncan Park address that is on Mary's death certificate. The obituary mentions him and all of his and Catherine's children, but no one else. If there were other Hogan siblings in Chicago at the time of Mary's death they probably would have been mentioned. Your other message mentioned Nenagh. The town where my Hayes and Hogan families came from was also near Nenagh. Perhaps if I could find marriage records from the siblings of Thomas Hayes or Catherine and Mary Hogan it would help narrow things down. I'd guess that maybe the older ones were married while in Ireland, although the younger ones may have left before they were married. What church did your Hogan family attend in Chicago?

Another possibility is that your Bridget Quigley was a sister of my Mary Quigley.

I don't know where my Hogans or Quigleys were from in Tipperary or any of their relatives other than Rody Hogan.

However, Mary Hogan (1834-1916) married John Carney (or Kearney) (1828-1901), who was from Castletownarra and Nenagh, so she might have been from the same area.
It is possible that my Brian Hogan ( born about 1910) could be a sibling of your Peter Hogan, although there are no Peters in my family. Winifred and Rody also don't appear in my family. My Hogans were from Burgesbeg which is part of the Youghalarra parish. Also in the records is Carrigatogher (sp). The 2 people that I am positive ended up in Chicago were Mary Hogan (who live on Duncan Park which later became 42nd) and her younger sister Catherine who was married to Thomas Hayes (1859 in Burgesbeg). Thomas and CAtherine came with all of their children. Mary never married. The Quigley in my tree is the mother of Thomas Hayes. I suspect that all of the Hayes and Hogan relatives left the area they came form in Ireland because one a few appear in the 1901 Irish Census and they don't match up with my people. But I' don't know where they all went. I have not been able to positively confirm the Chicago area. And I am now following a lead about the rest of the Hayes group (including the Quigley woman- Bridget) moving to Australia based on a story my mother heard when she was young. I've found some things, but no paper trail of proof.

We can see if we have a connection. Do any of these names sound familiar? Michael b. 1830, Mary b. 1833 d. 1898 Chicago, Bridget b. 1835, Thomas b. 1836, Catherine b. 1839 d. 1892 in Chicago, Michael b. 1843, John b. 1845, Margaret b. 1848, Honora b. 1852 and Denis b. 1853 (His name seems unique). Their parents were Brian Hogan and Catherine possibly also Hogan.

What do you think?

I wonder if your Hogans and Quigleys are related to mine.

Mary Quigley was born about 1812. She married Peter Hogan about 1832. He died about 1856. They had children Mary, Patrick, Winifred, Michael, John, Thomas, and Catherine. The Hogans left Tipperary in 1857 and settled in Hyde Park, south of Chicago. Mary Quigley Hogan died in 1876. Another Irish-born relative who moved to Chicago was Rody (or Roady) Hogan (1850-1915).

Are any of these names familiar?

HAYES IN MICHIGAN

Searching for any information about the JOHN and MARY MCNAMARA HAYES family, who emigrated from Ireland...possibly County Clare...circa 1855. They appear in Detroit in the 1860 census. Three of their sons, PATRICK(1844), THOMAS(1846) AND JOHN W.(1850) were born in Ireland. Two children, BRIDGET(1855) and JAMES(1857), were born in Michigan. John W. was my great grandfather. If any of these names are familiar to you, I'd LOVE to hear from you.

Hi Michael,

Rich Martini here - grandson of Edward Hayes - son of Michael Hayes - there were four Hayes boys - my grandfather was one of them, Edward A. Grew up in Decatur, married Margaret Muleady, had four girls - there's a cousin, Martha Hayes Welborne who can tell us more as she's been to the ancestral home in Ennistymon - which I have a picture of - and also an article where Michael talks about his boys with great pride on the occasion of Edward A being named Commander of the American Legion in 1934. Sound familiar?
