My father, Charles Henry Haylock, was born in Belize (actually it was known then as British Honduras) in 1882 or so. I have a huge listing of Haylocks that I will be glad to share with anyone interested in our family's genealogy.

Incidentally, a few years ago a Haylock was mayor of Belize City. She is one of our relatives.

Hi Heather,
I'm connected with John Haylock B.1681 and Marian Blesham B.1684, born in Mildenhall, Suffolk. My family lived in Holywell Row, a little village outside of Mildenhall from at least the 1500's,in the 1800's they moved to Surrey, and Middlsx. counties. I was in England in September and met Haylocks from my tree still living in Holywell Row, John and Marians house is still there! I had got a lot of help from Daphne in the past year and we met face to face when I was in Suffolk. She met me at the Bury offices and helped me go thru records, etc.

Thanks for pointing me towards the Suffolk BDMs page for HAYLOCKs - it will be very useful. I have actually also just made contact with Daphne myself a few days ago and she has been very helpful too. I'm amazed at how many HAYLOCKs there were in such a small area of England! Which line are you connected with?

I didn't post the original request in this thread, however I am interested in the HAYLOCKs of Suffolk. I'd be interested to know if you have any information on Mary Ann or Marianne HAYLOCK, born in 1822 in Great Thurlow? I believe her parents were John and Elizabeth HAYLOCK but can't be sure just which John and Elizabeth they were... either the ones in Cowlinge or the ones in Great Thurlow! Any suggestions greatfully received!

one of the bigmore's wifes maiden name was haylock.

stephen bigmore 1817-1894 married phoebe haylock 1818-1899. they had a son b4 they married who was under her name of haylock. the rest of the children were bigmore's. however, during the census, where the family have said that "...he's a haylock.." or "...he's a bigmore..." the whole family have been written down as that name.

i have made contact with a few people who have my grt grandfather as a bigmore with notes saying that they cant find him after the 1891 (i think) census. this is because he was one of the ones whose name changed. i have his BMD certs as HAYLOCK, and i also have his children as haylocks.

if you look at the census' properly you will see what i mean by the name changes.

i have 3 williams in my tree. 1791, 1821 and 1842. the 1st 1 had a daughter called sarah but was married to a martha. the last 1 was married to an abigail and the middle 1 didnt marry as far as i am aware.

sorry. however i do have lots of haylocks (and bigmore's as the name changed on census records) if you want to try and make a link.

I am married to a Haylock and have started tracing my husband's family. I have traced back to a William Haylock, born about 1800 in Ely, Cambridgeshire. He was married to Sarah and by the 1841 census they had 10 children that I know of.

Anyone think we could share info?

i bought the name meaning for haylock and it doesnt say anything about lock making:

HAYLOCK

the english surname HAYLOCK is of patronymic origin, as are many of the names used today. it is derived from the first name of a father. thus, the original bearer was the "son of HEYLOCK". this personal name is also the origin of the name HAYLETT and both these surnames are found in counties throughout englannd where the personal name was once popular. therefore, it is highly probable that HAYLOCK is a variant from of HAYLETT.

the surname is recorded in england as early as the 13th century. in the hundred rolls of 1273, EMMA HEYLOT of huntingdonshire and ROBERT HEYLOT of bedfordshire are both registered. in 1356 NICHOLAS HEYLOT was rector of thurne in norfolk and WILLIAM HEYLETT was vicar of hevingham in norfolk in 1658. finally in 1621 NICHOLAS HEYLAKKE in norwich was registered in the feet of fines.

I wish I could say for certain that we belong to the same family of Haylocks. To my knowledge, the only Haylock born in England was a Robert Haylock, born about 1800, who emigrated to British Honduras around 1820 or perhaps a little later.

hi,

i have hit a wall and need help.

my mother was a haylock b in kent 1949, i have information on her and her father - reginald haylock he was born in essex 1903. i have brief details on reg's father - G.R. HAYLOCK, b 1880 west sussex (details taken from reg's army book).

this is where i hit the wall - i dont know what the g.r stands for and cant find any records. and i dont know who reg's mother was. reg had a sister dora.

is anyone related or does anyone doing the haylock line have any extra info?

YOU ARE TERRIFIC!! The change of name for my greatgrandfather brings many other things together. Do you have the 1901 census? If so was there two other sons of Richard Arthur named Henry/Harry and John born after 1891? Two days ago I was frustrated and down in the dumps, you have given me the motivation to carry on with this search. Thank you so much.

I think I have your mystery solved, your Arthurs father was Richard Arthur HAYLOCK b1856 Isleworth.
He could well be "known" as Fred though?
Richard's wife is Mary, children Arthur Frederick, Richard "David", Florence Mary, (1891 census)

Thanks for the info. My grandfather, Arthur, came to Canada and married Susan Kerr, they had 4 children, one being my father. Susan passed away in 1925, Arthur returned to England, married Maude ?. His siblings were Henry, John, Florence, David. Florence is the only one I've been able to verify. The info I have is from my father before he passed away and as he lived in Canada for his first 18yrs. I don't think he knew his family very well and may have the names wrong. My greatgrandfather was Frederick, married to Mary Chequers. I'm told he was a Headmaster at Hogarth School in Chiswick. I tried twice to get in touch with the school but never heard back. I too have been going thru British Census, but finding too many possibilities. My one aim is to order Arthur's birth cert. But I need the day and year of birth. If I can nail down some concrete info then I can follow up when I come to England next year. Thanks again.

My family seems to have names used repeatedly, Arthur (most common) Frederick, Richard, John, Henry or Harry. Have you come across any Haylock families with these names running through them? I feel that I am going to end up in Cambridgeshire if I go back far enough. I was born in England and am going for a visit next year, but need a place to start. If you hear from anyone who may be connected, I'd appreciate any help I can get.
