Hi Lorrie,
Thanks for posting. I'm always happy to hear from Whitley Co/ Hays/Hayse, etc. descendants. You make the 9th "cousin" to join the Tree. Please e-mail me your e-mail address to babscookatcomcastdotnet, and I'll ask Ancestry to send you an invitation to join with "editor" status. Then you will be able to scan and upload pics., docs., stories, etc., and to continue to update your own branch.
When I first "did" this family, I entered just the "bare bones" info. on what I found. Lately, I've been working my was back through, trying to fill in missing pieces which have come on-line in the last 2 or 3 years. It's slow-going, since the families are huge, but I've made it to the 2nd gen. with the first marriage into the Cornelius family. Need all the help I can get!
Re: WILLIAM & SUSANNAH'S PARENTS, ETC. There are many files out there that take them back much farther, but I choose to limit myself to tracing descendants using on-line proofs, censuses, etc. Maybe someday a "cousin" will do the hard research to get back to the "crossing" ancestors. I also have a little, secret hope to then be able to tie the Whitely people to my own Hays/Hayes "line" dead-ended with William B. (Bailey) Hays, b. 1802, NC & d. 1888, Parker Co., TX!
Please send you e-mail address,& We'll get you on the Tree.
Barbara Hays Cook
2939 25th St.
Sacramento, CA 95818
916 456-6097

Barbara, thank you for your wonderful work on our family tree! Wm and Susannah are my 5th great grandparents, and I would love to learn more about them and, especially, who their parents and grandparents were, as I've hit a bit of a wall. I live just 3 hours north of the McCreary/Whitley County areas and visit as much as I can (usually once a year), to pay respects to numerous grave sites, churches, and old homesteads. I'd be more than happy to share photos and other info with you. I have lots of material and may be able to get more if there is something else you'd like help securing. I'd love to hear from you.

Lorrie Hayes,
Cincinnati

From Ancestry.com it appears the father of Adam Hayes was Patrick Hays (1777-1856). His father was Robert Hays (1732-1808) and His father was Patrick Hays (1705-1790). Previous to that, I have found no record.
It appears One of my ancestors was of the same tree that relates me to the Hundley family also.
My grandfather - Leonard Leroy Hayes - was a brother to Clofford Oscar Hayes.

I don't know if this is the Lewis Hays you are looking for but here is information on Lewis Hays from History & Families Knott County, Kentucky 1884-1994:

Lewis Hays was Knott County's first County Court Clerk and Circuit Court Clerk. He was nicknamed "Redheaded Lewis" obviously because of his shock of very red hair.

Lewis Hays was born 29 July 1851 to Rachel (Sizemore) and Anderson Hays. Rachel was the daughter of Golden Hawk Sizemore.

Anderson received a commission in the Confederate Army and after the war was over, he returned to Buckhorn from whence he moved his family to Hays Branch near Hindman. Anderson and his son, Lewis, built a water mill there for grinding corn into meal. Lewis was also a justice of the peace and later became postmaster.

Lewis married Margaret , daughter of Solomon Everage, at their home on Christmas Day in 1873. Elder Sam Combs performed the ceremony and Ben Ingle and Sarah Tate were the witnesses.

Lewis and Margaret were the parents of five children: (1) the eldest Lucinda, married a prominent educator Professor George Clarke; (2) their son Doug Hays was married to Lula Martin of Vest; (3) Alexander Sidney, joined the army at a young age and served on the Mexican border, in the Philippines and in China during the Boxer Rebellion; (4) John married Ellen Gayheart of Knott County and (5) Rachel Elizabeth, married Sam Stidham of Breathitt County. There were 22 grandchildren in the Lewis "set".

After his marriage, Lewis began dealing in livestock and had the first general store in Hindman. He and his son, Doug were in the logging business when he died on 8 November 1917. Margaret lived until 20 April 1931. Both are buried in the Hays Cemetery in Hindman.

Believe that John Bowen Hays was the son of Henry. He received land from Henry and was executor of his estate. Nancy and Margaret Hays purchased items at the estate sale of Henry. Believe Nancy was his widow and moved to Shelby County with daughter-in-law Sarah M. Hays, wife of John Bowen Hays who died between 1844 and 1850. Nancy is listed in the 1850 Shelby County mortality schedule as being born in Virginia. Would like to find parents or siblings of Henry.

I don't believe our lines of HAYS's are directly related; however, there appear to be many lines of HAYS that branch out from PA and VA in the early 1700s so maybe we are very distant cousins. Who knows?

I have seen many George Washington Hays's in the historical record hailing from different parts of the country at different times. There is even one that lived in Sonoma County in California at the same time as my family in the 1860s and 1870s. I have found no family relationship to that GW Hays however.

If you have an Ancestry.com membership, my family tree is open to the public.

I am confident in my information up to Jacob Hays who was born in Wythe Co, VA. in 1785 since this information comes directly from the family bible of my 3rd GGF, Samuel McCarty Hays. I have been working for a while without any luck to firmly establish Jacob's ancestors. There are family trees that indicate Jacob's parents are William Hays and Elizabeth Newport but I've not found anything in the historical record as sources for those facts. I've contacted every owner of the Ancestry.com family trees that list this relationship; the folks that have responded don't have the source reference.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Hmm...This post is old but maybe the message will still get to you.

I believe I am related to the Jacob Hays (born 1785) that you found in the Wythe Co. VA census. Jacob married Rebecca McCarty. In addition to Sophia, they had a son named Samuel McCarty Hays. My unverified records also indicate they had a daughter by the name of Eleanor Elizabeth Hays and another son by the name of William Lysander Hays.

By 1840 Jacob and family had moved to Platte County, Missouri. He stayed in Missouri for the rest of his life and died in Brunswick, Chariton, Missouri on January 1, 1858. His wife, Rebecca Hays died in neighboring Carroll County Missouri on June 3rd 1864.

Samuel McCarty Hays is my 3rd Great grandfather and I have information on the life and times of Samuel and his descendants if you are interested.

I know my part of the family is also related to another Jacob Hays (born 1809 in Greene Co. TN) whose family migrated to Missouri and then to Sonoma and Yolo Counties in California. I'm not sure whether the younger Jacob and Samuel were brothers or whether the direct relationship was further up the family tree. This side of the HAYS family had several plots of land and were a well respected family in Woodland, Yolo, California.

My Hays line is from Manhattan & Brooklyn. It is misspelled as Hayes all over the place...including burial records and even my grandmothers baptism record! Back then, Helen Hayes was a very popular entertainer so people often spelled our name wrong. Even in my Gma's yearbook, instead of her name, Ellen Hays, they have her as Helen Hayes!

My Grandmother's father was buried in Monmouth County. His name is John Ruth Hays and he moved there from Brooklyn around the 30s (1930s). I have no idea why he moved there when everyone in his family has ever lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn. He was with a woman named Duke so maybe she was from there.
Not your Hays, I'm sure, but thought I'd share :)

Which county in Mississippi did your 4 gr grandfather live? My 3rd gr grandfather, John Hays bought land in Hinds Valley Creek in TN and later moved to Louisiana. His son, Parker, claims to have been born in South Carolina. Parker's oldest son, John, says he was born in Mississippi. The elder John's other son was named William, who was born in Louisiana. I wonder if they are related?

He had a son George Washington Hays (Jr.) in 1848 in Lafayette township, Arkanas next to Camden and appears to have lived there till he died in abt 1885. His son on the other hand moved off to Texas. Camden courthouse burned about 1875. I am headed to Camden, AR, March 8, 2012, to search records. I would really like to find grave sites and land records. Any suggestions?

Re: John Woodrow Hays

By way of FYI, we recently did some research for a Betty Adams (I think her husband's name was Paul) on John W. Hays. We sent her a whole sheaf of paper about one week ago now. John W. Hays was a Civil War Veteran having served as an Ordinary Seaman in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Prairie Bird. (Google this name and find it's history.) He took sick with Rheumatism and also with Kidney Disease and ended up in the U.S. Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He died there on 6 May 1921 from a Cerebral Hemorrhage. His body was shipped to Mrs Bathema Hays at Fostoria, Kansas, as were his Personal Effects. All this was copied from the internet and sent to Betty Adams along with some other information. A son, William's, funeral service was held at Blue Rapids, also.

Today, 1 Feb, I called the PT County Register of Deeds to inquire of a cemetery that was called 'Rock Creek Cemetery' and if they had any information about such. I was told that the name 'Rock Creek Cemetery' is another name for what is now called Moodyville Cemetery. There is no stone for this John W. Hays since the PT County Burial Index does not have him listed and when the census of cemeteries was taken (circa 1980) the data came from the headstones; i.e., if there was a headstone the information was recorded in this database. Since John W. Hays is not recorded in that database the presumption is that he has no headstone.
Also, Darrell you my send the information on to your correspondent, Carolyn Stewart.
Sincerely,
Marian and Jim Bradley

On Jan 31, 2012, at 11:25 PM, Darrell Brooks wrote:

Good Evening Jim,
Thank you for the great information that you have sent. I have been corresponding with the Great Granddaughter of John Hays, Carolyn Stewart. Our correspondence began when she requested a photo of William Hays tombstone at Blue Rapids through findagrave.com. That has led to this research on John Hays. I did find info on John Hays through the Old Soldiers Home at Leavenworth but was not sure if this was the correct John Hays. Carolyn has very little information.
I went to the Manhattan Library (I live in Manhattan) and found the following article.
An Old Soldier Dies
John Hays, a veteran of the Civil war, died at the soldiers home, Leavenworth, Thursday night. He is survived by two sons, George of this city and H. C. of Hunter Island. Death was due from infirmities of age. George Hays was called out of town by the death of his father and will attend the funeral to be held at Fostoria at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon under the auspices of the G. A. R. Interment will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. The deceased had a good war record as a gallant soldier and during his lifetime took great interest in matters affecting his old comrades and greatly enjoyed their companionship.

Darrell Brooks
I am researching the Hays family in Monmouth, NJ. Sarah Jane Hays, of Howell, NJ, married Samuel Johnston, also of Howell, in 1833. She was probably about 14 or 15 at the time. The only Hays family in Howell in the 1830 census was headed by Jonathan Hays. In the 1840 census, the only family was headed by Lydia Hays. In 1836, Lydia sold some land as administratrix of the estate of Jonathan Hays. On some documents the name is spelled Hayes.
Howell was part of Shrewsbury in the 18th century. Is anyone else researching Hays in this area?

I bought a group photo of 13 women in mutton-sleeve dresses, and their names are on the back of the photo. If Margaret (or Margret) Hays is familiar, I'll email it to you.
