Hello Pip046, and greetings from New Zealand.
I see your post was in Nov 2007, hope you are still researching.
My link to the Headland family is via Amelia Julia b 1927 daughter of Thomas 1785 and his wife Christina 1788. They also had a daughter Mary Ann. Could this be your Mary Ann??
My Headland children, 7?, were born in either in Uxbridge or Clerkenwell.
Amelia Julia came to New Zealand in 1853 and married Edward Bland Atkinson. Two of her siblings also came to NZ.
If your Mary Ann is Amelia Julia's sister I would be very interested in sharing my details with you. There are others researching the Headland Family that I am in contact with who could be further sources to assist you.
Should you wish to reply could you please email me at
jennison@actrix.co.nz in preference to Ancestry.

My name is Ronald headland. I am descended from the Thomas (born c. 1733)and Hannah Headland of Newton Bromswold. I have a great deal of information on their descendants living in England (Bythorn, Brigstock, Clopton, Thrapston, Denford, Islip, Woodford, Wellingborough, etc.) as well as Canada and Australia. I'm looking for earlier info on the above Thomas. Perhaps we can help each other. I'm certainly willing to help anyone if I can with info related to their branch of this family.

Ron

Hallo, have just spotted your message re the Headlands at Newton Bromswold. I presume you have the info from familysearch that lists eight of Thomas and Hannah's children; namely: Thomas 1756, Mary, 1757,Joanna 1758, Elizabeth1760,William 1761, Dorothy 1766, Joseph 1770, and John 1774 - all baptism dates. My direct line of Headlands were born in Islip, Northants, but I think they are all connectd but havent done the link up with the Newton Bromswolds ones yet!

Jane

I have just found out that my great grandmother, SARAH GILLMAN's mother was a MARY ANN HEADLAND who married JOHN GILLMAN in henley, Oxon, UK in 1838. Sarah's marriage certificate (to Joseph Alfred PAWLEY in 1873) was witnessed by John HEADLAND GILLMAN (?her father?) The other witness was Mary Elizabeth GILLMAN, although I belive her maiden name was HEADLAND.

I'd love to see any details that you may have.

Philip

Update - Headland in London, Queensland and Benalla Victoria

William Isaac James Headland who was born circa 1810, possibly in London, married Maria Moore circa 1835. Maria was baptised on the 8th October 1815 in Old Church, St Pancras, London. She is also listed in the 1861 census living in the same area. I have identified four sons, William Henry (b. 12 January 1837, abode was Claredon Street, Camden Town), Albert (b. 2 April 1841, abode was Chapel Street, Somer Town), Robert James (b. 6 April 1839, abode 15 Chapel Street) and Harry Moore (b. 17 Sept., abode Chapel Street).

I would like to contact anyone who is interested in this family or who has information that will add to their story.

I am wondering how this family of HEADLANDs might connect to mine. My ggrandfather was william HEADLAND born in Louth, Lincoln, England in 1839, (I now believe he was a twin to Eliza HEADLAND) who emigrated to new youk, USA sometime before his marriage in 1864 to eliza jane CROOKSTON. It appears he was the son of a charles and mary HEADLAND and a brother to elizabeth marian (1840), anna maria (1842), and alfred (1844). Other names in this group include Jesse, James and Chapman, all born in Louth between 1818 and 1832. Chapman's parents are listed as a mother only named sarah. Are these your HEADLANDs? dorothy

i am looking at this post and also the one from scott craig and trying to find my connection. my charles HEADLAND was the son of william HEADLAND and eliza jane CROOKSTON who were married in the 1860s in shawangunk, new york state...which is in the county just north of new york city....at a dutch reformed church. both charles and most likely a brother named william are listed in the nyc directory (census or police directory? in 1989 (?)One is a florist and the other an upholsterer....by this time charles would have been married to rosalie CHAPELLE and their first child, eugene p. would have been born. my father francis l (lafayette) was born at home in 1891. there is extensive research done on the CROOKSTON line that goes back to england in the late 1500s but i would like to establish a line for the william who was married to eliza jane. i just have the feeling that the HEADLANDs were not well received by the CROOKSTONs and i also believe that charles and rosalie were estranged. in attending his (charles') funeral, my father was said to have remarked to his grieving mother, "it isn't as if we knew him." most recently i have been trying to connect to the many HEADLANDs who appear on the ellis island records. dorothy

My grandfather is Charles Headland from Roanoke, VA. His father was Howard, who died in PA 10 years ago or so, just prior to his 100th birthday. My dad (Robert) grew up around Butler, PA, his dad graduated from Grove City College. I was never exactly sure of the relation, but we do have a copy of Isaac Taylor Headland's book "Chinese Rhymes For Children" (I think is the title).

I had heard that the first Headland to come over was murdered shortly afterwards in PA. My recollection was that this was supposed to have been around 1830s - 1840s. Any further information would really be great.

that's the problem, richard. i don't have much of anything but the name 'headland' is not common enough to cause the endless problems that appear in family lines. My dad was francis(frank) lafayette headland, born nyc, lower manhatten, 1891. his father was charles, born 1862, unknown place, married rosalie veronica chapelle, born probably in nyc in 1865. my dad had a brother named eugene p. born about 1888. the 'lds' had a charles headland/hedlund listed in their archives or data bank, whatever, that i noticed in a lineages search a couple of years ago, i didn't pursue it because i don't know how to deal with their systems of microfiche, etc. i will mail you a copy of the info as i received it. thanks for your reply. is this great, or what? warm regards, dorothy headland nest, 2960 pineapple av. apt 109, melbourne, fla. 32935, phone 321 752 6505, e-mail dotdot@iu.net

Dear Mr Headland

I saw from this site that you have information on the English Headlands.

My great great grandmother was Emma Eliza (Ellis) Headland (1824-1886?). She was the daughter of Thomas and Christiana. She was one of several siblings including Thomas Hughes H. Anne, Amelia, Alfred James and Matilda Jane. They were then (1800s-1860s) in London or thereabouts.

Does this match anything which you have?

Every good wish

Sincerely

Terry Philpot
01883 716432

4 The Red House
Brick Kiln Lane
Limpsfield
Surrey RH8 OQG
UK

Just read your note about the Headland's. You mentioned writing to a Charles Headland of Beaver, PA. My grandfather Isaac Taylor Headland was Charles Headland's brother. Their father was Jacob Headland who was born in Colby, Lincolnshire, England. Jacob's father was William Headland born in Wellingore, Lincoln, Eng. 16 Apr 1797. William's wife Sarah Taylor was born in Hanforth, Lincoln, Eng. This is a bit of the information I have on the Headland's. Any Help? Let me know if their might be a link you know of. I have a few more generations back further in my files. Cort

My Grandfather Isaac Taylor Headland was born in Freedom, Beaver, PA. His father Jacob Headland was born in Colby, Lincolnshire, England 13 Jul 1835. He and his father, mother and siblings came to the US, but I don't recall the date. My grandfather was one of 11 children who were born in PA. Let me know if this might be of any help to you and maybe we can share some information.

Hi Shelle,
Saw your note at Family History.com.
My Great Grandfather was John Hedlund.
Actually, he was Johannes Carlsson Olsson, but when he came to America, there were too many Carlssons. They kept getting each other's mail in Worchester,Massachusetts, so he took his mother's name-Hedlund, instead.
John was born in Sweden and I have the family back to the early 1800s from a researcher that helped me in the early 1960s accumulate data on this family. The only thing I had to go on at that time was a cancelled money order that John sent to his mother back in Sweden to help support her.
His father had died and she was living on the good graces of the Parish to survive.
He stopped sending checks to her shortly before she died.

His brothers and sister came over, too, I believe. I am looking for family of Olle Carlsson or Olsson as he would have kept the original family name, I believe. Olle was strong and probably was a blacksmith. He is supposed to have moved to California

Thanks, Shelle,
Appreciate anything you can find.
Actually, this family seemed to move all over the place, so there might be a connection, yet.

Please remain in touch.

Jaye
