Hi Jean - I have an unsourced tree, prepared by someone else, that shows your William Heal as having married an Ann MAGDALENE, but nothing about a second Ann. I agree it's an attractive theory but I've not researched this part of the tree with any thoroughness. Please communicate via moulding@one-name.org if you would like more detail.

My queries follow. Does anyone have a marriage for William and Ann Heal prior to 1835, and did William Heal marry two different Anns, noting that William Heal and Ann Julia Hayes Bennett married in the Sep 1844 qtr in the Wells district; and an Ann HEALE died in the Wells district in the Sept 1841 quarter.

Otherwise, why is there such a large gap between the births of daughter Mary Ann in 1835, and daughter Louisa in 1847. Did they simply have a lot of children who died young? Does SKS have access to the St John's Glastonbury parish records?

Could your Heals be related to my Heals that were also from Northern Devonshire? When you get a chance read my message board posts entitled "John Heal of Stonefarm/Bideford, Devon." They are dated 24 Feb 2005 & 29 Dec 2006. I don't think that Bideford and Bratton Fleming are too far apart. I would love to compare notes. Thanks!

Hi Roy - Yes, William Virgo HEAL married Mary HOLBROOK somewhere within Bristol registration district in the first quarter of 1878 (GRO reference 6a 121) and had at least one child. My (limited) information also says he was married more than once but whether this was earlier or later than Mary HOLBROOK I don't know. For this family I'm working from a tree passed to me from someone else which certainly contains some inaccuracies - I hope this isn't among them. I'll be glad to provide further details, and also on the better-authenticated Heals of Chew Magna and later of Wiltshire and London (leading to Sir Ambrose HEAL and the Heals stores in London and elsewhere). William Virgo Heal

I am researching the HEAL family from Paulton. I am especially interested in William Virgo Heal 1857-1908. William was a timber dealer and married to Mary.I am trying to find out if this was a Mary HOLBROOK? or if he was married to another Mary or possibly even married more than once? Thanks for this. It seems clear that George Brass (aka Smith or Heal) has no connection to me. His step-father Ambrose Heal or Hale may possibly have a remote connection, although I cannot at this stage identify which Heal branch he may be connected to, if at all. Knowing the name of his first wife might help. I have no record of "my" Heals ever being in Bradford-on-Avon or the immediate area, but you never know. I have a good deal of information on my own and another, possibly linked, Heal line (including a large number of "George Heals"). Hello Rod,

Ambrose Heal or sometimes Hale is shown as being born in Turley Wiltshire abt 1809, he is a Stonemason. 4.1/4 1858 Bradford-on-Avon Wilts a widower he married Elizabeth Brass (nee Wiltshire)possibly a widow? with a son aged about 3 Years. Ambrose died in 1875.

My interest is George, its a bit complicated but he may be my Mothers Grandfather who used the name George Smith?

I'm intrigued by this query since I have no fewer than nine (9) Ambrose Heals in my tree, a number of whom were born in or connected to Wiltshire. However, as things stand I have no trace of an Elizabeth Wiltshire or a George Heal. Where was the 1881 Census entry for, please, and are there any earlier relevant census entries? And where did the marriage(s) take place?

I have no connection to this family, but hope it helps. This is from the book "Lincolnville - Early Days."

"Abner Heal, the second one on the board (selectman), was one of five brothers who came from Edgecomb and Georgetown near the time of the first settlements in the Plantation. He located on the place where his son Stover Heal now lives. He was a man highly respected for his candor, honesty and impartiality in the discharge of official and public trusts, and in all business relations with his fellow men. He served on the board of selectmen for many years."

2. I cannot find the baptism you refer to either, although I agree that Compton Dando is in the right part of the country. I believe that the data may be in error or that the event has not been transcribed and is therefore only accessible to personal searchers. I have been supplied with a line back to 1740, but am not sure if it is correct.

Chris sent me a message telling me about a John Heal baptised at St Mary's Compton Dando 6th March 1815 parents are John and Hester Heal, labourer.

Have not been able to find any records, maybe you could look this up and have more luck than me. Are you in England? I'm in Australia and more resourses are limited or i'm looking in the wrong place

I have a Francis Heal (born betw. 1805 - 1811 ... not found birth and this is based on census info), living in Kilmersdon on 1841 census, but birthplace given as Holcombe.

As yet I've not found parents for him. He married Sarah Hanco(x)cks on 26 Dec 1831 at St Margaret's Babington. Children: Matilda 1833, Sarah 1836, Emma 1838, Ellen betwn 1841 - 1844, George 1845, Frederick Charles 1849.

Ellen is my gt-gt grandmother.

Does anyone have any of these in their records, as I'm finding it difficult to link them in to any other Heal/Hale trees!

I have Frederick George Heal in the tree.

Frederick and Annie had 8 children (that I know of)

On the basis of the very limited data you've supplied I can't make a conclusive link with my Heals, yet the other information ("yeoman farmers", "Bishop Sutton / Chew Magna", "1200") corresponds precisely. I do have other data including Heal trees supplied by a gentleman who is (probably) a 6th cousin which I will need to check. It would be helpful to have any additional information about your earliest generation of Heals, such a places of birth, dates and places of death. I'll happily send you corresponding data from my files for you to check over.

Thanks for your reply, I was told that my Heals came from Bishop Sutton and Chew Magna area of North Somerset, they date back to 1200. They were Yeoman Farmers. The family disapated during and after the English Civil War. They only information I have is

Unknown Heal (but thought to be from Bishop Sutton / Chew Magna)

sons:- William b 1740, David b1742, John b 1744, Richard b 1746

William married Jane Brook b 1745 at Glastonbury St. John 19/7/1764
Child:- William b 1765 married Elizabeth (betty) Roggers b1770 d 1856
They have 6 children William b 1795, John b 1797, James b 1801, Daniel b1805, Sarah b 1809, John(2) 1810 - all born Glastonbury.

If you need any further information, I have the rest of the tree to present day,

I have many Heals from Chew Magna in my tree, with documented certainty from the late 1400s through to the 1700s and less certainly for another 200 or so years earlier. I'll happily check this over for you if you can give me some names and approximate dates of any of your relatives who may have been connected with Chew Magna.

I do have this gentleman on record, but I did not chase him as I did not believe he was family. The information comes only from the 1881 census, the Somerset marriage index and freeBMD.

John Heal married Maria Day 17 May 1834, parish of St John, Glastonbury, son James Ace, (married Mary Ann Lane at Wells 3Q 1878) their son Hubert Ace, born c1880, all living 1881 at Old Road, Glastonbury.

I note, just checking, that a John Heal was baptised 6 March 1815 at St Mary's, Compton Dando, right for your Chew Magna, to John and Hester Heal, labourer.

My G G Granfther was James Ace Heal b 1854 married Mary Anne Lane in 1878, they lived at old wells road, glastonbury. His parents were John b 1810 married a Maria Day. Would appreciate any info. Someone informed me that his descendants came from chew madga in lt 1600 to early 1700?

I know James' information is correct, as iv'e had contact from 2nd cousin living in wells.

I do have John, but unconnected to my family. The information came from an old email from someone else whose adress no longer works: marriage 1867 Bridgwater to Mary Davis, died Aston, Erdington, Warwickshire, 1874.

My Great Grandfather was born in Nether Stowey Bridgewater in 1865. His name was Edwin Davis Heale. His Father was a John Heale who was a Miller by trade. Have you anything on the Heale's who lived in that area.
