Hello, my name is Chris Hecht. I just started doing "Indexing" last week. I'm hooked. I found this thread of messages and saw Frederick William Hecht name mentioned. I ran to my room and grabbed a small booklet some Hecht relatives in Missouri put together in 2005 by Nancy Hecht, my dad's cousin or something. Anyway, seems she has done some cool family history. The booklet says this, "No one name Hecht was living in Missouri before 1839. In September 1839, approximately 140 people left Bremen, Germany with Pastor Theodor Carl Friedrick Gruber to join the Saxons who had immigrated to America in 1838 with Pastor Martin Stephan. The book Zion on the Mississippi by Walter O Forster contains a list of this group, which includes a Fr. Hecht, his wife, and four children. This group came from Bremen and arrived in New Orleans on board the ship Johann George on November 27, 1839. The ship manifest lists as passengers: Fried. Hecht, age 36 years 3 months, a frame work knitter, from Mittelfrohna; his wife Christiane, age 33 years 4 months; Fred. William, his son, age 9 years; Ch. Reinhold, his son, age 4 years 1 month; Ch. Reinhard, his son, age 2 years 6 months; Chris. Wilhelmine, his daughter, age 11 years 4 months."
From the 1850 U.S. Census Records for Perry County, Brazeau Township shows: Frederic Hecht, age 47, farmer, born in Germany, owning real estate valued at $150, Christiana, age 46, born in Germany, Frederick W., age 21, laborer, born in Germany..."
Any questions let me know.
Chris Hecht

I am looking for information about the Hecht family of Bukovina, Austria, who were caretaker/manager of the estate of a nobleman in Bukovina. Anna Hecht was their daughter, possibly granddaughter - she married Samuel Tresser.
Another question is - who was this nobleman?
Thank you for any help or insights you can offer.

Thank you for guiding me in the right directions!

I guess your last clue confirms the naturalization petition from Adolph belongs to our Alter - even though his birthday and date of arrival is a little off - but I guess that may have to do with time elapsing, not speaking English well, and perhaps his age had to do with the fact that he was born in the beginning of the year (Feb 15, 1875).

If you haven't expressed it, I am in awe of all the hard work that you, David, and your daighter have done!!!

Another piece of the puzzle I don't have is information on you and your brother - inclusing your wives and childrens names.

Finally, what is our relationship? Am I your second cousin once removed? If so, whould your children be my second cousin twice removed.

Best Regards,

Steve

PS: When can I expect to get my next badge to go from beginner to novice or amateur? LOL!

But seriously, we have a genealogy club in my community that I am planning on joining.

Hmm, you process my hypotheses and return them as accurate.
I'm aware of all of that 1910 stuff.
They are both brother-in-law and sister-in-law to Adolph only.
>> That is Nettie's sister's family and their mother.
That is how we obtained Nettie's maiden name. My daughter found it all years ago by, creatively, searching MigdAn.

Although it was very common for even extended family to live together for extended periods; they didn't have to live 'with' anyone per-se; however, I get the idea that he didn't do very well. His occupation has been given as window cleaner.

BTW, you're still a beginner, albeit a beginner with an Ancestry subscription and me as an adviser. :-)

Nettie promised Jean that she would give her something for naming my mother (Alta Chaya) after Alter (Adolph Harry).

I found an Adolph married to Nettie - with the Canadian border crossing, as you have indicated. The document listed their address as Osbourne Street in Brooklyn, which is the same street my mother lived on when she was first born!

I also found an Adolph and Nettie Migden in the 1910 census that lived with their brother-in-law and sister-in-law, respectively. Since Adolph and Nettie didn't live with Lena, they would have to have lived with Nettie brother - which makes things even more confusing for me!!!

Guess I am now no longer a beginner LOL

Steve

Ruchel had at least 7 children starting in 1860. The one's we know survived.
Schmiel Aron died at 1 month in 1874 and can be found spelled as Mygden.
Aron died at 1 yr. 1 mo. in 1880
It would be odd for your mother to have a mans Hebrew name.
I believe the feminine form would be Alta.
I could take a wild guess that they knew (?) that Alter was Alter Chaim Americanized as Aldolph Harry (completely conjecture) and they gave your mother Alta Chaya.
Unlikely they were naming after Chane(a) as she was alive at the time. (Anyway, if she had passed they would have just used Chana.)
I misquoted my mother's name - it is Alter Chaya - possibly named after her Great Unle Alter and Her Great Aunt Chana...

I also found Aron, who died early, and Schmiel Aron; what I lack is the connection - whether they were Ruchel's children or nices and newphews...

Steve

Carl has generously shared info (and some of his photos) with me. Regrettably, I have not yet found the connection point; and as his early comment on this thread indicates, neither has he. Which is surprising as he is the go-to Migden/on/in Guy.
If you are not retired, this sort of work (for me, anyway) winds up being done in furious bursts, and maybe a few times a year. You only hope that the person (whoever that may turn out to be) that you find out everyone agrees could answer your questions, stays in good health.
I have spoken to, lost, and missed many such persons.
I could easily spend weeks of evenings on the phone adding in names for the current generation who have married and had children since we've last spoken. and for many I would have to have the awkward conversation about how I am their relative as the previous chat was with their parents who knew me since I was a baby. Don't get me started......

And.. Interesting about the sibling rivalry.... Ha!
But families`were often large, not too much birth control, and, no doubt, an awareness of early mortality....

Kissing cousins seems to be common back then; as my Grandfather Abe Malmed's sister Rose Malamed married one of her cousins - Louis Melamed.

I was wondering if Sigmund Migden is the same oneName with a father named Abe and sister named Jeanette?

This is becoming VERY addictive and I was grateful that I was able to find out information about my father's side, since my grandfather died in 1937!

Thanks for all your help! I also had some assistance from Carl Migden...

I think I will start slowing down a little since this hobby is beginning to completely suck me in.

Steve

Steve

Also...
Their sister Anna (Chana) married Sigmond (Sische) Migden; yes, a cousin and they had more like 10 or 11 children and at the marriage of at least one of them Philip (Peretz, for whom I am named) was a witness. Many of them lived in tenements on the lower East side on streets which no longer exist either having been removed for housing projects or the FDR drive.
Careful with this genealogy thing; it's the black hole of hobbies; you get sucked in and can't get out.

Steven,

As I mentioned yesterday, Lena had a sister and a brother who traveled to US with their mother Rachel (Ruchel).
Yes, we know of Adolph (Alter) and that as of 1930 he was still alive and living with his wife (both unemployed) in South Fallsburg, NY
His wife, the former Nettie Strompf, died in York, Ontario on 12/9/1932 (HER mother died in the same town in 1924, perhaps she had ties to Canada. Alter showed up in a border crossing to Canada in 1921 giving Fallsburg, NY as his last permanent address; but, obviously, they returned by 1930).
Anyway, I knew nothing of a second name for him; but, certainly, Lena and her sister "Anna" (Chana Malke) were still around in the 1936 when your mom was born to influence your grandmother on the naming. I'll take the second name as first hand information as it's from mom. :-)
Ask if she might know what the Hebrew/Yiddish name was.
I had calculated, that as Nettie's death certificate lists her as a widow- that Alter died between 1930 and 1932; but the fact that your uncle Joel is... well, Joel, not Alter leads me to think that Alter may have died in the few months between Joel's birth and Nettie's death (which I do not have written down as such, but I think, maybe, was suicide?)
Perhaps it was tragedy of a broken heart?
Oh, by the way, all this stuff about Alter, his wife (who we only very recently, relatively speaking, had learned about) and all was really tedious to put together.
You, me, my brother, daughter and your mom are on the very short list of people living who are aware of his existence.
Sure wouldn't mind finding his grave. Canada, with Nettie, perhaps?

I made a mistake here and don't know how to edit my post, so please disregard the following sentences ---- "I am still not certain about the Anna Hecht, passenger on the Rotterdam, arriving in NY on 14 October 1912. I tend to think this is not Anna Tresser as I believe she was married to Samuel before he left Bukovina and so would have been noted on the passenger list as Anna Tresser." -------- Anna is noted as Anna Tresser on the passenger list - not - Anna Hecht - I still am not sure this is the Anna Tresser we're looking for.

Thank you for replying. All the family information is very helpful to my research. My brother-in-law asked me to do some genealogy research for him. Samuel and Anna Tresser would be his grandparents. I am still looking for information on Anna Tresser. Do you have a reference for her maiden name being Hecht? I am still not certain about the Anna Hecht, passenger on the Rotterdam, arriving in NY on 14 October 1912. I tend to think this is not Anna Tresser as I believe she was married to Samuel before he left Bukovina and so would have been noted on the passenger list as Anna Tresser. I have another question for you - I see a Schulem Tresser immigrating to the USA, arriving NY 1909 on the S.S. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, age 32 - I am wondering if this is Samuel? Any thoughts on this? Many names were changed as people came through immigration and I wonder if this is Samuel. Age would be about right, residence given was - Piedekoutz,Austria. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Sorry for the delay. There were two Hecht families in Ruscova, which by a marriage later became related through one of my greatuncle's wifes. My greatgrandparents lived in Visooroszi since 1775. They had arrived already with a surname, Bergfeld which they tranlated to Heygeter which became Hecht. I think Eva Hecht belonged to them, the other family arrived later from Ukraine parts was named Khaiat which became Hacht and then Hecht (this is the family of Howard; his mother was born Hacht, his father was named Werzberger, a cantor who did not marry the mother. You may also contact me under renate.bielefeld@t-online.de, I am in
contact with a group that tries to reconstruct the Visooroszi families in the USA, I can link you with them if
you want. I will check Eva Hecht meanwhile. Thanks for your reply.
Yours Renate Bielefeld Kuschinski

Hello Mark,
I am researching the Tresser family you mention here in your post. Are you able to give any more information on the ancestry of Anna Hecht and Samuel Tresser? Do you have any documentation about Harry being the father of Samuel? I believe Anna and Samuel were from Bukovina, Austria. I see, Anna Tresser, on the passenger list of the Rotterdam, arriving in NY on14 October 1912, birth year abt 1880 - I am not sure this is Anna Hecht Tresser.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Marilyn

I am doing research on the Heckt Family for my husband. So far I have obtained much information for starting with nothing. I am looking to go back as far as possible; however, I am finding myself "stuck". Last I have is Claus Heckt son of Claus T Heckt. I believe that Johann Hecht is one of the first settlers. Does anyone have information pertaining to the Hechts. Also; Hect, Heckt, Hekt, Heuck...etc. Please email heather-heckt@hotmail.com if you are able to help. Thanks in advance for any help you have to offer.

I just found an Eva Hecht married to Eli Pollak most likely in Visooroszi whos son David Pollak (b July 20, 1889) came to the US in about 1906. Is this a likely connection. Hecht is the real name of England's Tory leader Michael Howard. His father Bernat Hecht immigrated from (Ruscova) in 1939 and changed his name.

Do you think Eva is related to your Hecht family?

Hecht family from Podlaski (1927) & Nowogrodek (1929) to NYC

Hello:

I am looking for information on my son's paternal greatgrandparents' families.

I have found their Passenger Lists which provide the following:

Zawel (Szmul) Hecht of Podlaski, Poland left in 1927 to go to his uncle, Maszko Hecht, in NYC. He left his wife, Leja Hecht and 2 son, Josef and Chaim (my son's grandfather who was known as Hyman). At this time, Leja was in Nowogrodek (present day Navahrudak, Belarus), where she and the two sons were born. They were living with her sister, Pahala(?) Szlosberg, at Micjiewicza 8, Nowogrodek, Poland. The sister's first name is difficult to read because it was typed on the document and became smeared. Leja and her two sons left for NYC to join Zawel in 1929. It is on Leja's passenger list that she spells his name as Szmul.

I have found record of several other Szlosberg's that lived on Micjiewicza from The Nowogrodek Province 1929 Polish Business Directory. I believe they must be connected to Leja's brother-in-law. Their names were listed as:
Slozberg, Bas - grocer
Szlosberg, D - hairdresser
Szlosberg, Fej. - office furniture

It is possible that Leja's maiden name was "Rasia" as Zawel had her listed on his passenger list as Hecht, Leja Rasia.

If anyone knows anything about these families, I would be so grateful to hear from you.

Also, the passenger lists provide the visa numbers and the dates they were issued from Warsaw. If it is possible to get copies of these documents, I would appreciate someone explaining to me how to do this, as they may have additional vital information on them.

Thank you very much.
Eileen Taft
tafte@cfl.rr.com
New Smyrna Beach, FL, USA
