List of 39 HECKMAN(N)/HICKMAN Families to America

All,

I have compiled a list of 39 possible HECKMAN(N)/HICKMAN families that came to America during the 1700s. 4 of the 39 have had their DNA tested, proving as many as 10 (of 39) family relationships. Please view this list on my website: http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home/heckmans... and download the Excel spreadsheet, if you like. Please forward any info that you may have on these 39 families - my next step is to add web pages for each of them.

Thanks,
Jeff Heckman
jheckman@frontiernet.net

DNA proves Joh(a)n Peter HICKMAN was a Rothenberg HECKMANN

John Peter HICKMAN's parentage had been a bit of amystery: while many believed he was born to Johann Adam and Anna Elisabeth(a) Lenner Heckmann in Rothenberg im Odenwald, Hessen, Germany ~1740, there are no records of his birth there - or of his journey to America. In the late 1700's, he left Berks County PA for VA, and later Sullivan County TN. A husband to four wives (he outlived all but the last), his descendants were numerous - and they blanketed the South and Midwest.

A distant cousin of mine in Austin, TX has written the most comprehensive book to date on the John Peter HICKMAN family line: "Wolfe and Hickman of East Tennessee". Dr. Trimble donated his book to the Brigham Young University Library, and so it can be downloaded online for free:
http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/F... [The file is huge, and it will take a while to download...]

Another distant HICKMAN cousin in Austin had his DNA tested, and his DNA matched mine 100% (for the markers he had tested)... so we have proven once and for all that John Peter HICKMAN is in my HECKMAN family line!

DNA test prices recently decreased by 10% or more, so give it a thought if you'd like to prove your family relationships once and for all!

Thanks,
Jeff Heckman
jheckman@frontiernet.net
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/
All,

DNA proved last year that some significant Heckman family lines in the US are related!

The DNA testing firms offer significant discounts this time of year; they are set to expire in a few days. Here are some sites to check out if you are interested:

http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home/heckman-...
http://www.familytreedna.com/
http://www.archives.com/?_act=discoverFTDNA

I recommend a Y-DNA 37 Marker test; fewer markers give less definitive results.

Jeff Heckman
Penfield, NY
jheckman@frontiernet.net
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home
DNA proves HECKMANNs related in Rothenberg Germany!

All,

DNA testing proved recently that the American decendants of Johan(n) Nicholas HECKMAN(N)/HICKMAN and Johan(n) Adam HECKMAN(N) are related!

Nicholas and Adam were born in the vicinity of Rothenberg in Odenwald, Hessen, Germany in the early 1700s. Although it was likely that they were related, the connection has yet to be determined - even going back two generations earlier.

This new information has inspired me to pull together nearly two dozen resources on our Rothenberg area ancestors, some of which I have uncovered with the help of a German cousin. I am laying that detail out in a spreadsheet to share with all of you; please let me know if you have any info that I should add to it.

Best wishes,
Jeff Heckman
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home
Re: Harry Heckman, b. Sep 1890 Kansas, raised by Ridenour family

Jeff,
Sorry I couldn't get back to you earlier, but briefly this is the little I know about William A. Heckman.

Smith Family records say that William A. Heckman and Louisa Catherine Smith were married 22 Sep 1883, Hiawatha, Kansas by T.B. Dickson, Probate Judge of Brown Co. I have a family book written by Cecil Smith, a nephew of Louisa Catherine, and on p. 151 of this book Cecil states that William A. Heckman was "from Kansas City."

In the 1885 KS Census>Brown>Robinson W. A. Heckman, 24, Plasterer, OH; Louisa 21, OH. Louisa also appears in her father's household in Robinson in that same census.

This is all the factual information I have. But I have a lot of speculations.

I will work on writing up all my speculations and see if I can get them to you later this week.

There is a William Heckman, b. OH son of Adam and Catharine both b. PA in Wolf River, Doniphan Co., KS in 1875, and this same William seems to be in Wolf River in the 1880 census working for J. H. Snyder.

As for Alexander Ridenour this is the connection I found:

1900>KS>Riley>Manhattan: Ridenour, Alexendar Jun 1836, 63, md31, PA PA PA, Farmer, O, F, M; Hannah, wife, Jul 1847, 52, m31, 3/3, PA PA PA; Etta M. Oct 1874, dtr, IA PA PA, Book keeper; Jennie F., dtr, Apr 1876, 24, Dress maker; HECKMAN, HARRY Sept, 1890, 9, KS PA PA, at school.

1905>KS>Riley>Manhattan: Alexander RIDENHOUR, 68[1837]; Hannah 61; Jennie F. 28; HECKMAN, Harry 16[1889].

When I followed up there is a death record for a Harry Heckman from SSDI:
Harry Heckman b. 23 Sep 1890 d. Mar 1967 Minster, Auglaize, OH d. 05 Mar 1967 from OH death index d. Mercer Co., OH lived in Auglaize Co.

Trees on rootsweb list different parents for this Harry with these dates.

Thank you for your response and any added input.

Nancy Smith

Hello, I am looking for mother/father/sibling info on Harmon Heckman and his wife, Mary. Harmon was born in December 1839 in Hannover, Saxony, Germany, and came to the US in 1858. By 1860, according to the Census, he was living in Kenton, Kentucky, and eventually found his way to Jackson County, Indiana. He and Mary were the parents of Charles, John, Lizzie, George, Annie, Minnie, Clara, and Fred. Mary S may have been born in Germany, but since they were married after Harmon's arrival in 1864, she very well could have been born in the U.S. Thanks! D.

CPT Lewis Heckman, Gettysburg Hero

Hello Heckman Researchers,

After visiting family near Kutztown PA recently, my son Dan talked us into going to Gettysburg, as it was less than a couple of hours further away. Not knowing where to start, we decided to take one of those air-conditioned 2-3 hour bus tours... and you can imagine my surprise when we were introduced to the Heckman Battery monument at the edge of Gettysburg College, just 10 minutes into the tour! Here is one of several links descibing the monument and Heckman's actions there: http://www.gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/OH/1OHArtBatK.php

A long time ago I recall hearing about Lewis - and thought that he might be a cousin associated with some family members that moved to Pickaway County OH in the early 1800s. As I'm going back through my research, I cannot validate my family ties to Lewis - and I have been able to find very little on him since then (I've even found an unsubstantiated reference that he is an uncle - and not a cousin). I contacted Stuart Dempsey, a certified Gettysburg expert who specializes in CPT Lewis Heckman's unit; he is what he shared:

Mr. Heckman,
My own efforts to learn a bit more about Capt. Lewis Heckman have not
yielded great detail, unfortunately. What I have is as follows (and it may
or may not be entirely accurate, so caveat emptor):

Reportedly born in Germany c. 1823. In 1860 resided in Cleveland, with
occupation given as a 'manufacturer of fancy cakes & confectionary'.

Commissioned as 2nd Lt. in Battery K, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Feb. 20,
1862; Promoted to 1st Lt. Oct. 20, 1862; Promoted to Capt. May 1863, when he
assumed command of the battery in place of Capt. W. L. De Beck, who resigned
his commission.

Mustered out of the Union Army July 12, 1865. Died at Rocky River OH, Aug.
1, 1872.

Not much there I admit, and I cannot personally testify to the accuracy of
some of it at this point, as some of this comes from uncited secondary
sources.

You might consider finding out if the Nat'l Archives has a pension file for
Heckman. If he was either injured or in any way disabled during his service
(of which I am not certain) then he probably filed for a pension. There are,
sometimes, some good stuff in those pension files, though this is not always
so. Oft times, the pension files can be more enlightening than the military
service record, assuming their is one. Also, in my roster of Ohio officers,
Lewis is listed as 'Louis' so it could be either way.

Best of luck to you. If you do end up finding a connection with Capt.
Heckman, and if you find out more than the paltry info I have provided, I
would be in your debt if you would share it with me.

All the best, Stuart R. Dempsey

To which I replied:

Stuart,

Thank-you for the info - I wasn't sure which Lewis (or Lewis) was the one involved. I'd come across the confectioner from Cleveland in the 1850 census, which said he was born in Germany. I have found that such a claim is not always the case. I have not been able fo find much more so far on him or his descendants. Most Heckmans come from Hessen, Germany. DNA testing has shown that we are not all related, as we come from at least three different gene pools. I will let you know if I learn anthing else. Thanks again for the background info.

All - Do any of you have anything to share about Lewis Heckman? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

PS. Why can't we write to the HECKMAN-L list directly anymore?

Best wishes,
Jeff Heckman
jheckman@frontiernet.net
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home
My father Paul does not know anything in regards to his family except his immediate brother and sister and Terry contacting him was quite a surprise.

Hi Nancy,

I am investigating some Heckman:Reidenhour conections in Berks County PA, and feel sure that your KS families and mine are somehow connected. Also, I have Heckman family members who went to KS for a while, and I didn't have a clue as to why...

Is there more you can tell me about William A. Heckman or Alexander Ridenour, like where they were from? I had been planning to call some Reidenhours in PA this weekend to ask them the questions I had, and perhaps your info will prompt even more questions that they might be able to answer for us.

Best wishes,
Jeff Heckman
Penfield, NY
jheckman@frontiernet.net
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home
I am looking for any information on Harry Heckman, b. Sep 1890, in Kansas. He can be found in the 1900 and 1905 Censuses in the Alexander Ridenour family in Manhattan, Riley Co., Kansas. I am researching the Smith family which I believe is his mother's family. According to family stories Harry was adopted by the Ridenhour family, and grew up to work for Northern Life Insurance Co. I believe Harry was the son of William A. Heckman and Louisa Catherine Smith.

Thanks for any assistance.
Nancy Smith

Jacob and Susannah were married March 18, 1852 in Montgomery County, Ohio and later moved to Wayne, Randolph, Indiana. They were both born in Ohio, Jacob in 1828 and Susannah in 1830.
Well, how about that! Yes please let me know about his open house. I'll finally get to meet some of the Heckman family.

Directions to Hessian Camp:
From downtown Reading go to the end of Penn Street past the Soverign (entertainment)Center to City Park.
Go right onto Perkiomen Avenue Eastbound Rt 422.

Travel out Perkiomen Avenue several blocks to South 19th Street. (East Reading) Look up the mountain and you'll see the Pagoda.
Turn left off of Perkiomen Ave to S. 19th Street. Go through the Pendora Park, under the bridge (another ancestor of mine help build the original bridge) Back in this quiet section of the park is where the camp was set. The only thing back there is an old private club. In the extreme upper reaches of the park there used to be a well used picnic grounds. Few remments remain but I read that it was really something in it's heyday.

There is a historical marker at the end of the bridge going back into Reading explaining the Hessian Camp.

To make this short; the camp area in under the Linburgh Viaduct in East Reading.

Hi Cousin Lana!

Yes, the stone home on Heckman Road was an old barn. I beleive it to be located on the original Heckman homestead, which was said by a neighbor to have been a log home that wsa destroyed perhaps a century ago. Get this: I have become aquainted with the owner of the stone home; he has been remodelling it and plans to put in on the market soon (Spring or Summer)- and he's offered to give the Heckman family a private showing beforehand! Just let me know if you are interested, and I'll let you know when that will be.

I'd like to know where the Hessian Camp is, so I can check it out someday. Our ancestor George has records of his service at the camp located at Franklin & Marshall College. I have not seen them, but a young library assistant there said they were just some time records and not very interesting (we'll see someday).

I do not know much about your William, other than he had a lot of kids and I think his wife was of the Shoemaker (Schumacher) family for whom the town of Shoemakersville was named. My ancestor Peter - William's older brother - bought a lot of land from the Shoemakers, and I've wondered if that came first - or if William met his future wife first, and that led to the propert sales...

Jeff Heckman
jheckman@frontiernet.net
http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home
I just finished looking at your site. Wow! Too much to take in.LOL We actually did see the house on Heckman's Road. It's mere feet from the road. Today it's very modern looking but we thought it was a barn. Great stone work-looks new.

Like all that DNA work.

Reading about the Hessians was great because I used to play in the area of the camp as a small child. We also caught a Hessians Reinactment group there years ago. I understand that George was a Hessian guard. And saw somewhere that some of the prisoners had the surname Heckman. Now I can see how they might have decided to stay.

My line seems to be:
Bertha
Edward Leo
Willoughby B
John
William
Johann George
Johann Adam
Johann Peter

Hi Jeff!
Guess where I just came back from! We drove along "Heckman's Road" over in Alsace Township; a great place for goats and sheep, but not great farm land. We saw a few very old homes, but at this time don't know if they were family related. Bing Map it and you'll see how difficult it must have been to settle there in their eary years in America.

Your good news about George makes me very happy. And I agree that it's odd that his donation would be the most excepted form of proof.

I don't have any other photos of the Heckman line and really don't know them, other than my Grandmother Berta G. That said, her brother John Heckman contacted me about 6 years ago and I am ready to set up a get together with him and my brother if he is still alive. Perhaps he might have some photos?
Cousin Lana
lanajeane@aol.com

I'll check out your site and see if we have common information. I just renamed my site: Maurer-Heckman Family Tree if you'd like to view. I am in the early stages so some of it may be unreliable.

We are in Berks County...my husband likes to call it "The Mother Load" because there's such a rich history of new immigrants here. So, if there's something you lack let us know. We've walked many cemetaries, and poked through some libraries; and he know all the nooks and crannies.

Hi Lana!

I believe other relatives of ours have justified their membership in the DAR based on our old George. As I recall, they had to rely on the records of George having donated money to the cause - as opposed to his records of service (which must somehow be deemed unreliable).

Do you have any old pictures or other Heckman memorabilia that I might consider posting to my Heckman Family website?

Thsnks,
Jeff Heckman
Hello Jeff!
This is Lana and I am the actual connection on the Heckman family line. My husband Jim is the search guru! Since I was born of the Maurer/Heckman family marriage connection my new tree comes up as Maurer Family.

I was jealous that my husband's family quilified him to seek Sons of the American Revolution and wondered if I also quilified for DAR? Well, we think that is the case, we are now working on fool proof information.
Today I am working on William/Wilhelm 1791-1854 to drill down to Yohann George 1748-1835 wife Maria Magdalena Hamm.
A George Heckman was a Patriot soldier with Capt. Deturk's Company,3rd Battalion 1777 & 1778.

What an entanglement I find; so many children! But finding the Estate Record for William helped. Any thing you might seen for the connect would be appreciated.
Lana
lanajeane@aol.com

Looking for descendants of Glenn Forrest Heckman who married Hazel Shofstall. Glenn was born in 1894 and died in 1955. I am not sure, but I believe he lived in the Kansas City area. They had three children: William, Geraldine, and Ruth. Hazel is a descendant of Etta Miller. Many thanks, Linda Miller Wilson
