Interesting letter

My mom passed along an interesting letter to me this weekend, from her grandmother (Ada May Hedges, b. 1876 in Indiana). She claims (in rather cryptic ways) that she (& by implication I) are descended from President Harrison. Not sure which one, but I assume it must be the elder (William Henry), to get the dates to line up a little better.

The surnames she mentions in the letter are "Unclesba" (if I'm reading it correctly - such a strange name) and of course Harrison. Locations mentioned are Poland, Indiana. Ada May's parents were John & Rosa Hedges (Rosa is perhaps nee Applegate/Unclesba/Harrison?), though I have no info about them.

Maybe "Unclesba" is actually "Unclesby"? Sounds a little more likely, maybe.

Anyway, anyone ever heard of these people? I really have no idea what old Ada May is going on about, but I do want to try to look into it. =)

Forgot to mention a crucial detail - this is a 4-page letter and apparently only pages 2-4 survive. So I'm really not sure what's going on here. Since page 1 is missing, there's no date on the letter, but she does say she's 84 years old so that puts it in about 1960.

Preston B. Hedges & Patsy Mary Estes Hedges of Hedges Station

I am the g-g-grandson of Solomon Osbourn and Margaret Elizabeth Hedges. I recently visited Hedges Station, Kentucky, and found the gravesite of Margaret Elizabeth's parents. Their stones are intact, but Preston's monument has been pushed over, and the area is over-grown.

I live in St Louis, but I am planning to go back, clean up the grass and weeds, take good photographs of the stones, and generally try to gently preserve the area.

I am looking for any members of the Hedges or Estes or Osborne/Osbourn family that live in the area of Winchester-Paris, KY, who would like to join me for a workday. It should not take more than one day to do the job, but I fear I can not handle it by myself.

Preston B. Hedges is the grandson of Revolutionary Patriot, Joseph Hedges and Sarah Biggs. Martha "Patsy" Mary Estes Hedges is the granddaughter of Revolutionary Patriot, John Estes and Nancy Ann Montague.

Please respond here or privately to me at jeo@subon.lib.mo.us

Thanks.

HEDGES
There are 10 posts on this Ancestry board pertaining to "The Colonial Descendants of William and Mary Hedges" by Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig. To find the posts, use the search box at the top of this Hedges Board page. Click on the small dot next to Hedges board. Type in the title of the book, click search. This book like so many others are filled with erroneous information. Be sure to read the addendums that accompany the other eight pages. I use most books as a guide line (not as the gospel) and later try to find official government and church records as positive proof. "Pioneers of Old Monocacy" and many other books are available on Ancestry.com. You may be better off buying a subscription to Ancestry.com, especially if you buy a lot of books pertaining to genealogy. "Pioneers of Old Monocacy" sells at between $35.00 and $40.00.
Ok, nice summary.

I have never seen the source nor heard the citation before now for the Joseph Hedges-Mary Fettleplace marriage in Berkely Co VA. The one above for England came from my great aunt's 1926 DAR application, which I suppose could have been an error in the place where it happened. I also have not seen anything other than the Pioneers of Monocacy assertion that Catherine was the mother of Charles, son of Joseph.

None of my previous comments referred to Charles, the brother of Joseph. I was depending on Pioneers for my understanding of Joseph and his two first sons, Solomon and Charles.

How do you know about the Berkeley Co VA marriage? that Mary Fettleplace was Charles' mother? that she died in childbirth?

I am really interested in the sources because that Charles, son of Joseph of Monocacy, is my ancestor.
James,

And it seems we get even more confused. Which Charles are you talking about? Here’s my version, which seems to fit very well with all the known facts, but that is just my own view, of course. It separates the two Charleses.

At the time in question, there were two Charleses. The one of which I was speaking in my previous note is Charles #1. He was Joseph’s older brother, often spoken of as Charles Caldwell Hedges by many researchers. Son of William and Mary Hedges, he was born in 1673, probably in London, and came with his family to New Castle DE in 1677/8. in abt 1704, he married Elizabeth Stille, daughter of Anders Olafsson Stille, and moved from White Clay Creek in Delaware to Londonderry Twp, Chester Co PA about 1725. He had five sons, two of whom actually purchased Hedge Hogg, formerly Joseph Hedges’ estate in the Monocacy area. OK, that’s it for Charles #1

Charles #2 was the son of our Joseph Hedges (d. 1732, MD) and Mary Fettleplace. They married
Jan 31 1708 in Berkely Co VA or, according to your information, on that same date in Kingswood, Wales. The couple had two sons. Solomon was first, born in 1710. Two years later Mary bore their second son, Charles, named for his uncle Charles Hedges #1 above. I feel sure this birth took place in Red Clay Creek where the couple lived before moving north to London Grove, Chester Co PA in 1720. Mary Fettleplace died in childbirth with Charles. A few years later, Joseph Hedges married again, to a Catherine or Katherine etc. (Her last name and parentage are an ongoing topic of argument among Hedges researchers. Most people seem to take the legendary view going with a fine 19th c. retelling of an old tale of a dream had by a woman named Catherine Stalkop) I tend to go with the Catherine Land version.) Anyway, the new Joseph Hedges family had another list of children, Jonas, Joshua, Joseph, Josiah, three daughters (Ruth, Dorcas and Catherine), Samuel, and some say a Peter who died young in Pennsylvania and who was reputed to be listed in an early version of Joseph’s will. ???

Tracy and Dern’s Pioneers of Old Monocacy tends to speak mostly of Joseph’s branch, and only rarely gets into Charles “Caldwell” Hedges, rightly so, mostly because Charles "Caldwell" is living in Chester Co PA, not in Monocacy. So when they refer to Charles, it is Joseph’s son Charles. This is the stuff of which confusion is made. But they are “our Hedges” so we continue to struggle with the confusion!

I trust I have dates straight this time!

Lynn Scheu
Although off the the topic above, it may be helpful to refer to the discussion starting on page 106 on Joseph Hedges in the Pioneers of Old Monocacy. One notes that Joseph had remarried by that time to a Catherine and that she was the mother of Charles Hedges (p. 109).

I'm confused. If Joseph Hedges came to America with parents William and Mary and brother and sister Charles and Mary in 1778, how did he marry Mary Fettleplace in Wales in 1708? He was only three years old when they left England. (Or a little older if we accept your 1770 date) He did not go back. And marriage to Mary before he left was rather unlikely. Especially if they married in Wales where he had no connections.

She was mother to his son Solomon (b 1710) and died (probably) having his son Charles (b. 1712). Both of these sons were born in America.

I have a record of a Joseph Hedges marrying a Mary Fettleplace in Berkely Co VA (WV) in Marriages of Berkeley Co WV. Jan 31 1708. It was cited earlier. Maybe two Joseph Hedges? There was another one rumored in the Frederick Co area. But the duplicate marriage dates in both Wales and Berkeley Co VA between a Joseph Hedges and a Mary Fettleplace are rater too coincidental.

Ezekiel Hedges
I always pay attention when I hear his name. I wonder if you all know anything about him? He left a string of descendants across KY and Indiana and on west. The first Ezekiel was the son of Peter Hedges Sr. b. 1717(?) in DE. He married quite young, about 18, to an unknown woman. She gave birth to their only son, the first Ezekiel. (Bet she had a father or close relative named Ezekiel though.) Peter remarried after ?? died to Elizabeth Seeds at Old Swedes church in Wilmington in 1750. They had a gang od sons and a daughter. James, John, Josiah, Caleb Joseph, Peter, William and Phoebe. He must have been a great half brother to the sons Peter had after him.
Ezekiel Hedges the very first went away to fight Indians, and was killed by them in Berkeley Co VA (WV) on Sept 26 1777. He was serving in Captain Foreman's company when he was killed. He was unmarried and had no known descendants. Poor guy. His mother was dead at his birth, he wasn't even mentioned in his father's will because he died before Peter. But he WAS remembered. His grandfather left him a colt in his will. His younger half-brother Peter Hedges Jr. named his third son Ezekiel for his beloved half brother. And this was the son who married Mary Tanner.
I think Peter Hedges Jr was an old softie. He named his first three sons after dead-too-soon brothers. His first son was James, after his older brother James who died unmarried in his early 40's (more is unknown) the second son was named Caleb for his older brother Caleb who was killed in a tragic accident. Caleb was cutting down a tree with another man, "one chopping left, the other chopping right" as my great grandma always put it. (Caleb was her great grandfather) The head on the ax of the other man flew off the handle and struck Caleb right on the chest, stopping his heart. He died instantly. So Peter Jr. memorialized his three probably much-loved older brothers by giving his sons their names.
I liked this story so much when I realized what had happened. The naming customs of our ancestors are often so same and dull. Oh yes, one more William, John, Joseph. But here was naming with a purpose.

Lynn Scheu
Louisville, KY

Brian
Anyone born a Hedges or who becomes a Hedges qualifies e.g. a non-Hedges bride who marries a Hedges so John Kenneth does qualify.
In the Hedges Study database I have a Leslie William Hedges born 1903 in Camberwell R.D. If he is, in fact, the correct Leslie William then his parents are Frederick Hedges and Kate Dawes. I have been able to follow the family back to Abingdon in Berkshire. If you would like to know more about what I have found please let me know. The information will be too vast to post to the message board so please contact me direct at Hedges@one-name.org
I have looked again at the information relating to John Kenneth on the www.veterans-uk website and see that although he is mentioned on the Roll of Honour his name is not included on the Memorial itself (not sure why). I have also discovered more information about his promotions thorugh the ranks.
Sue

Sue,
Again thanks for this informtion.
I had no idea that John Kenneth was a Major in the `Royal Signals`. However, I`m not sure if JK qualifies as a bone fide `Hedges`as his birth name was actually John Kenneth Bennett. His father was John Valentine Vernon Bennett and his mother was Ivy Gladys Gilder. His parents divorced in 1928 and apparently Ivy`s second husband Leslie William Hedges adopted John Kenneth, hence the change in his surname. John Kenneth is my half first cousin; we had the same grandfather though by different grandmothers. I understand that Leslie W. Hedges also had a military background; there was a Leslie William Hedges mentioned a couple of times in the `London Gazette` in the 40`s.
As far as John Kenneth is concerned, I was most interested to find out why he was mentioned on the War Memorial, for those killed post WWII. I wondered what altercations were occuring in 1970 to cause his death. I`ll see if I can order his death cert.
Brian

Re: Josiah Quincy Hedges
The Josiah Hedges who founded Tiffin? I have a different death date. This is from a public domain book published in 1881:

**********************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: Book: HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN CO.
Biographical Encyclopedia Pages 638-639.
Hedges, Josiah, The founder of Tiffin, Ohio, was born, April 9th, 1778,
near West Liberty, Berkeley County, Virginia. He left his father's home
at an early age, with the determination to carve out his own fortune.
The first enterprise which he undertook on his own account was a trading
excursion to New Orleans on a flat-boat laden with fruit, which he
floated down the Ohio river from Wheeling to New Orleans, the voyage
lasting six weeks. He finally settled in Ohio, in 1801, one year before
was admitted as a State, and located in Belmont county, where for a
number of years he was one of its most active and prominent citizens. He
was the first Sheriff of that county, and for a term of years Clerk of
the Court. He next engaged in the mercantile business at St.
Clairsville. His capital was limited, but was slowly and surely
increased by prudence and sagacity. In those days merchants in the West
were wont to purchase their goods in Philadelphia, journeying across the
Allegheny mountains on horseback, and carrying their specie in their
saddle-bags. In 1819 he opened a branch store in Mansfield, having as a
partner his brother, General James Hedges. Soon after this he removed
from St Clairsville to Mansfield, and in 1820 made a journey to Fort
Ball--it now being a part of Tiffin. He immediately decided to enter the
land opposite to Fort Ball, on the east side of the Sandusky river, on
which the county seat was located and the city of Tiffin was afterwards
built: and proceeding to the Land Office at Delaware, Ohio made the
purchase of the same from the government. In 1822 the first stick was
cut on that part of Tiffin now in the First ward, and during the same
year the first frame house on the town plat was erected and used as a
store--now known as the "Old Masonic Hall." He also built, in that same
year, a flouring mill on the Sandusky river, and a saw-mill on Rocky
creek, both of which were largely patronized by the pioneers of that
day. By a prudent and liberal course in disposing of his town lots he
saw the place increase steadily in population, and in 1828 he secured
the removal of the Lay Office from Delaware to Tiffin, thus giving the
town a renewed impetus. In 1831 he was chosen to represent the district
in the Ohio Legislature, serving one session. In 1837 he disposed of his
store to a son, and retired from trade, giving his attention from that
time until his death to his real estate interests in Tiffin, which were
necessarily very large. In his younger days he was an athletic and
vigorous man, and in his old age retained in a remarkable degree his
manly sense and vigor of mind, transacting and managing up to the last
his own business affairs. He was generous and just in his dealings with
his fellow-men, benevolent to all Christian denominations, in most cases
donating the lots on which their churches were erected, and was liberal
towards all public improvements. He was a friend to the poor, as many
citizens can testify, well remembering his kindness and leniency to
them. In all the relations of life he was a just and sincere man. He was
a good citizen and a true and steadfast friend. As a father,
affectionate and indulgent: and by his kindred, both old and young, he
will ever be gratefully remembered. To him they could always go, and his
heart was ever open to them. His sagacity and foresight were such that
his advice was often sought: and so excellent was his judgement that he
rarely erred in giving it. Although not a member of any church, he was a
good and true man, and upon his dying couch he expressed to his friends
a willingness to die, and assured them of his unfaltering trust in that
"Saviour who has promised to save all who may turn towards Him in faith
and penitence." He dropped away quietly, as if but entering upon a
sleep. Without a groan or struggle the good old man took his departure
and passed away "like one that draws the drapery of his couch about him
and lies down to pleasant dreams." He was first married September 29th,
1803, to Rebecca Russell, in Belmont county, Ohio, and had by this union
six children, two only of whom are now living--Mrs. Rebecca Walker,
widow of Joseph Walker: and Mrs. Clarinda Hunter, widow of William
Hunter, all of Tiffin. His first wife died July 8th, 1816, aged
thirty-one years. After a widowerhood of one year he was married, July
10th, 1817, to Eliza Hammerly, of Martinsburg, Virginia, having by this
marriage nine children, of whom six are still living--his son William C.
Hedges, a real estate dealer in Tiffin: Cynthia A., wife of Luther A.
Hall: Mary Jane, wife of A.
Looking for Source proof of lineage From Hedges/Biggs

I am a descendant of Joseph Hedges (1750-1805) and Sarah Biggs (1746-1822) through their son, Charles Hedges (1773-1850) and his wife, Miss Mathews (1780-1809) and through grandson, Preston B Hedges (1808-1899) and Martha Patsey Estes (1818-1859).

I am seeking actual source proof of this lineage which I see cited on several genealogy trees here, but few people have source posted with any of their public trees.

If you have source references for this lineage for your public or private trees, please share with me. Thanks in advance.

I am the descendant of Solomon Osbourn and Margaret Elizabeth Hedges of Clark County, Kentucky. Margaret Elizabeth was the daughter of Preston B Hedges and Martha Patsey Estes. In the 1924 DAR application of my great aunt, Mona May Osbourn, she make reference to lineage facts cited from the family Bible of Preston and Patsey. I have no information on where that Bible is today, but I am searching for it.

If anyone knows who hold this Bible, please contact me. Thanks

James Osbourn
St Louis, Missouri

Ezekiel's father is named Peter, and Ezekiel's wife is Mary Tanner, so my guess is that Peter could be Ezekiel's brother. Sarah tanner could be Mary's sister. I have that information at home and will bring it to my office tomorrow. I haven't been able to find very much info from that branch of the family, but will post it if I do.
