James Heffernan

I've been researching my family history and have managed to find my gggrandfather who was James Heffernan. His son Thomas was born in 1864 somewhere around the Kanturk area in Cork, Ireland. According to Thomas's marriage certificate from 1885 (when he married Catherine Cussen) he was from Curra, which is from the same parish in Cork, Milford. The witnesses at the wedding of Thomas and Kate were Michael Heffernan and Hanoria Heffernan. Based on the first name of Thomas and Kate's eldest daughter James's wife may have been a Mary. Anyone out there have any info on Michael, Hanoria or James?

I have a photo of Patrick Heffernan but I don't know it its the right one. Do you have any photos to compare it with. Also Joe, I revisited the ships logs and I don't believe its MY Patrick as his wife is not listed and he would have only been 16 where he states in a sensus that he was 26 and formerly a farmer in Ireland. This would have been around the time of the famine. This Patrick on the ships listing was a laborer and found one that was a shoemaker. I hope that info can help. If you want me to send you the ships listing and the photo, just let me know your email address.
JULIE

Hello Joe! My Patrick moved to Morton, IL and as of the 1900 census was 69 years old and still married to Mary. He had 6 children including my great grandfather James P. Heffernan and his brother John. The rest were girls. They opened a tobacco store in Champaign, Il and my grandfather inherited that. He was somewhat of a visionary and turned it into what is now known as K's Merchandise and several other names. i.e. He would put products on the shelves with a tag and stock them in the back. My mother, Mary Heffernan was adopted and her birth records come from Ireland. We are digging deeper as we feel it may be someone in the Heffernan family who made a mistake which back then would have been hidden by sending her to USA to stay with relatives or something like that. They were all Catholics. In fact all of my grandfather's sisters were nuns. I'm having trouble going further back on Patrick. I can't seem to locate him in Ireland records. He was born in 1932 and came over to USA in 1948 during the famine. His occupation was listed as a farmer. However he was only 16 or 17 when he came from Ireland. I have a recording of a Patrick Heffernan on a ships ledger but Mary was not listed. However, she came over from Ireland the same year and maybe they met here. Also, the name Heffernan was often changed from O'Heffernan when coming to the USA. County Clare is loaded with Heffernans. But the ancestry map puts him in the middle of Ireland between Dublin and Galway. There are so many Patrick Heffernans that it is hard to tell. He was the only Patrick listed on the ship's ledger. I think we are chasing two different families. Let me know what you have. Regards, Julie PS. Tomorrow the 1940 census comes out and has more information on it.

Greetings Julie :
I have recently learned that my Great Grand Uncle Patrick F.Heffernan was born in Tuam, County Galway,Ireland on 3/15/1849.I have identified 9 siblings. He died 10/13/1919 in Lead,South Dakota,USA.
I have been told than the Calway/Mayo border has shifted a few times, but I have not researched that as yet.
Should we compare info ? Do you have any other details?
there is a 17 year difference but maybe we can work on that, or it was a near relative...

Best',

Joe McHugh
Cape Elizabeth,Maine,USA.

Thomas HEFFERNAN, Esq. - Kilbarry, County Galway, Ireland

Hi:
I have recently broken through and found that my maternal Great Grand Uncle Patrick F.Heffernan was born in Tuam, Cty.Galway ,3/15/1849.He emigrated to Pittston,Pa.USA as a child with his parents, married a Rose Riley, and died 10/13/1919 in Lead, South Dakota.

There has been an oral history that my mother's McHale's had a "Lord Heffernan" in their ancestry.I have never found an inkling of him however, perhaps until now.
I have stumbled upon the article cited below and seek comments.

CONNAUGHT JOURNAL.Galway,Ireland,Thursday, September,4,1823.

"This day two unfortunate culprits R.Nagle and Dennis Barrett, who were convicted for attacking the house of Thomas Heffernan,Esq.of Kilbarry, and robbing it of arms, and also with tendering and(sic) unlawful oath to Mrs.Heffernan, will be escorted from the county goal by a party of the Lancers to Mallow, preparatory to their execution on to-morrow at Buttevant."

OK, this is 1823.I am presuming the incident was to procure arms (note:plural "arms")for a Rising.

Am I correct thinking that a house to have more than one weapon, that it would be a wealthy house of an agent ,or a manor house of some sort?

And would the occupant of that dwelling, regardless of his lineage, would be addressed as "M'Lord"?

Also great weight seems to be placed on the "unlawful oath"directed at Mrs.Heffernan. The rights of the average Irishwoman would not be considered so important in the courts I'm thinking...

The accused being escorted by " party of Lancers" sounds like a heavy escort for men in manacles?

Well, I would really appreciate any input from a factual angle , or on the customary of 1823 in Galway.

Thank You.

Best',

Joe McHugh

Cape Elizabeth,Maine, USA

I have found details of Patrick & Eliza Heffernan arriving on the 'Royal Saxon' in 1844. I think these may be the people you are looking for, they were from Galway. Reel 2135, [4/4785] Page 163; Reel 2453, [4/4899]on State Records of NSW may be of some help. Reel 2135 is on line but 2453 is on microfilm should be obtainable at local library.
Dartnell from Cork, Cork, Ireland

My great grandparents Edward Dartnell and Emma Smith immigrated from Cork to Winnipeg, Canada around 1905. Edward's family had a bootmaking business on Grand Parade in Cork for about 100 years, about 60 years at the same address. Edward's parents were James Dartnell (1825-1898) and Eliza Lane (1827-1884). James' father was Edward Dartnell, about whom I have little information. An Edward Dartnell died in Limerick in 1868, but I have no idea if this is my man. I estimate that James' father would have lived from 1780ish to the 1840s. He is not listed as a witness at James and Eliza's marriage in 1849. A John Dartnell was witness. Any insights are appreciated.

My grma Alice Veronica Powers daughter of Ellen Butler and Patrick Powers all born in NWFLD, all moved to Boston. I believe the gr grandparents stayed in NWFLD because I found frequent boat trips back in the late 1800's. I've searched a ton of Census Heferan/Heffernan is a very uncommon name. My problem is I can't find addresses on any of them because Power(s) is too common. I also believe that is where my families red hair comes from. Firefighter Hefferan died in 9/11. He had red hair.

I'm estimating backwards. I know Patrick Powers born in NWFLD where unknown, March 1844 to William Power and Catherine Heferan. I am using the spelling as it appears in the Provincial Archives Documents and Mass Archives. Patrick married Ellen Butler in St. John's. Many of the names are very frequent in my family Alice, Veronica James.

It goes down to aunt Elaine's level (all the kids under William I. Heffernan are listed).
Looking for information on Thomas HEFFERNAN(died 1891 in Tipperary at the age of 82)and his
family. He married Honora (aka Nora?)RYAN in the parish a Galbally in 1840
(witnessed by John Ryan and William Heffernan). They lived in Emly where
Thomas ran a private school. Thomas had a withered hand and was known as
Lamhain. I think they had 5 children - Bridget (18/1/1846), Bridget
(21/3/1847) Conelius (30/7/1849), Margaret (3/5/1853) and Mary (23/2/1856).
I think Thomas father may have been Otho from Clashaliska (the border
between Emly and Lattin).

Mary (my g/g/grandmother) immigrated to New Zealand where she married a John
Lynch from Bantray Bay.

I am be interested in any information on any of my ancestors.

Greetings all. I have a 4th great-grandmother named Mary (or Maria) Heffernan. She was baptized in 1803 in Carrick-on-Suir Parish, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. The record names her parents as William Heffernan and Bridget Fannin (Fanning?). She married Philip Cleary in 1825 in Cahir Parish, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. They immigrated to the United states in 1840, first to Pennsylvania and then later to Illinois. If this rings a bell with anyone and you have stories etc to share I'd love to hear them. I do not know anything about Mary's siblings or parents but have some information regarding her once she made it to the states.

Thanks!

Hi - my father was born in 1913 and his father (William j Heffernan m Clarissa Teresa Tilley) died when my father was 13, so 1926/27 would be the year he died - James Joseph Heffernan does not ring a bell, so doubt he is connected. Your 2nd listing as James - could this actually be William James as that is the name of my grandfather - the DOB seems correct.

My grandfather's parents were James and Lucy. Lucy's parents were William Lamb and Eliza Dartnell. William married Eliza and then her sister Mary. I have information about the Dartnell and Lamb families thanks to help from members of those families. so - William is the correct father, but wrong sister for Lucy's mother.

So - the 2nd entry on your list may be correct provided the name is William James and Lucy's parents were William Lamb and Eliza Dartnell

So

William J Heffernan/Clarissa Teresa Tilley - grandparents
James Heffernan/Lucy Lamb - great grandparents
James Heffernan/Mary Fleming - great great grandparents
??? - great great great grandparents

I see from your posts that the name Heffernan has not come up until my post? Do you have a family connection, or just love the "thrill of the chase?"

thanks again
Elizabeth

I have no info re DOBs, however James and Lucy are listed as born in 1861, so assuming parents 25+ years, that would put them born around 1830-40 or thereabouts??? Copy of James and Lucy marriage certificate attached - this is the only clue I have - hope you can help??
Elizabeth

Looking for information of parents of James Heffernan - married to Mary Fleming - believe both from Ireland. One of their children was James who was married to Lucy Lamb (married 1886 - Australia) I am trying to trace family back before James and Mary - I am totally stuck!!
Tks - Elizabeth
