John MacLeod is my great uncle. His father is Roderick MacLeod (1818-1910) born in Scotland and died in Duluth Minnesota, His wife, Jane MacRae (1823-1871) died in Scotland. Her oldest daughter, Julia, moved to Duluth and married William Lillingston McLennan. The rest of the family moved shortly there after to Kincardine, Ontario, Canada and then 10 yrs later abt 1881 moved to Duluth. Most of the family is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. I have checked with several MacLeod cousins and they have no information regarding John and Elizabeth (Johnston) MacLeod or their daughter Florence. I have not checked the Minneapolis papers for the obituary of her parents. That is an excellent idea.

The 1920 census has John's name listed as William. As far as I know that is a census error. To my knowledge John doesn't have a brother, Donald Samuel MacLeod. All his siblings are acounted for as well as most of their decendents. I agree she must have married and left Minnesota. Donald MacDonald (born in Canada all MacLeod's were born in Scotland) is not a known family memeber, but they are living at the same residence with perhaps the widow of Elizabeth Johnston's brother.

Let me know your thoughts...great information and many thanks.

Katherine

Re: Helland Molsterteigen Skiff Whitcher and Houser connections

I have never found her marriage or death date, so there must be an explanation - we don't know if she left Minnesota but I think she did or there would be some records. If you have any family letters or documents that give more information about the adoptive parents and their whereabouts, we might be able to trace Florence. Even if you know for sure the names of any of their relatives. Then I can try to trace the cousins and we might find Florence staying with one of them or we might find another obituary in which she is mentioned.

From the Hennepin, Minnesota 1910 census we know John and Elizabeth E. McLeod were living with adopted daughter Florence. John and his parents were all born in Scotland and Elizabeth and her parents were all born in Michigan. They had a servant named Anna Johnson. They had been married 14 years. From the 1900 census we have a clue, the brother Donald Mcdonald is living with them, age 39. Do you know if he went by that name or is it a census error? (they spelled MacLeod as Maclard so the Mcdonald could be an error too). There is a family in other censuses that would seem to fit with Donald and John being sons of Roderick McLeod, 1822-1896 and Mary Marjorie Martin, 1822-1909, both born in Isle of Skye, Scotland and both died in Prince Edward Island, Canada. But we don't really have enough information to place them there for sure.

If this is the family we might find that Florence moved to Canada or was living there at some point. I strongly suspect she did marry or we would find some trace of her. But we need to be sure this is the right family.

Donald Samuel McLeod (possibly the brother of John, living with them in 1910) married Mary Ellen McLean and also lived in Seattle, King, Washington. and died there in 1953. The wife died in 1905, and the 7 children were all born between 1889 and 1903. This might be why Donald was living with his brother in 1910, but then, who was raising the 7 children? It would really help if you could find some family records - we need more facts about John and Elizabeth Johnston MacLeod...I would also like to solve this mystery.
Re: John Henry and Guri Helland

Thank you so much for writing me with this spectacular news.
All I know of my grandmother Anna and family was pieced together from a very few clues, and the ancestry.com records. I don't know if you have already looked at my family tree but everything I know is on there pretty much. I may have more in my notes. I have a copy of her birth certificate, but I dont' know if I attached it to this site. The awkward thing is I am not a member anymore though they let me access my family trees and they are still up there for viewing.

Anna and Cornelius Helland were my father's parents. They did live in Red Lake MN and he had a brother Hjalmar, who died as a young man from pneumonia; also a sister Ruth who died but I cannot find any information about her. My father would never talk about these things as he was too heartbroken. I never met my grandparents - both died young before I was born. Anna died in 1941 just before my father went into the army in WW II and he saved one letter from her, in which she says she hopes he won't have to go to war.
Anna and Cornelius had several other children...well, please read my family trees, and if you want any more info, I can tell you anything you want to know. I would like very much to trace you and your family on the tree, so please give me some details.

Just getting her correct last name took months. My father's records called her Quisling, which was an Americanized spelling. Through many old records and censuses I finally got her correct name...
Cornelius died and Anna remarried twice, To Mr. Thompson and Mr. Basey...these also were very hard to find and I don't have all the details. I have an envelope with her name Mrs. Henry Thompson...and one when she was Mrs. Basey.

I asked my sister, before she died in 2006, to tell me everything she knew or remembered, because she did know Anna Helland. She took care of her while my mother went to work, from old letters I found that Anna actually kept my sister at her house all week and my mother only had her on weekends. Mother had to work at a department store. This was when my sister was about 2 to 3 - Anna died when my sister (Marione Leatrice) was 3. She was my ONLY link with Anna Helland...and told me all the clues she could remember...

I do want so much to hear from you again and share everything we have. I never dreamed I would hear from the Kvislen side.

It would be so wonderful if I could see a photocopy of the letter or if it could be scanned somehow and emailed to me. What an amazing find. Please let me know your source for this letter and whether there might possibly be any more letters...

Please write me directly at my email suze12@yahoo.com

Regards
Patricia Helland

Hi
I am reseaching my family history (Kvislen). Strangely enough, I had gotten a copy of a letter written in Norwegian (later translated) addressed to my great grandfather's sister in Norway. The relatives who have had this letter couldn't figure out who the author was. I did a couple searches and it led me to you. The return address says Mrs. C.H. Helland Redlake Co, MN. In the body of the letter she says her husband's name is Cornelius Helland and she has a 9 month year old son Hjalmar(Einar?). She signs it Anna. The letter was sent to Ringebu, Norway Jan 16, 1905.

The odd thing is that she addresses my ggaunt as Sister. We have no record or an Anna Kvislen as a sister to my great grandfather. I would appreciate any information you may have found.

To those who research any of these families in N. Dakota, Nebraska, New York, Minnesota and other states.

I have been researching the four children of Martha Julia Molsterteigen: Harry, Walter, Alda and Florence (Martha Julia's mother was my great grand aunt, Martha Helland) who were born in N. Dakota and were adopted into 3 different families when Martha Julia died at age 26. The childrens' father, Charles B. Skiff, remarried and had 2 other children with Edith Wernty or Wertz, who went on to marry Alexis Arthur Smith.

Two of the sons of Martha Julia and Charles Skiff, Harry and Walter, were adopted into the James Henry Whitcher family. Obits and histories of James Henry Whitcher and his wife Hattie Adeline are available on this site.

The other daughter of Martha Julia and Charles Skiff, Alda Gladys, was adopted by Frank Zuelsdorf and his wife Christina. She married Vane Adelbert Houser and they had many descendants, all of whom are descendants of Helland/Molsterteigen/Skiff.

One daughter Florence was adopted by the McLeods and I have not yet been able to trace her. She was mentioned in her grandmother Martha Helland's obituary as Florence Cloud.

I've attached many census records to my family tree online to show the residences, ages and relationships of these people through the years.

I'd be happy to hear from any members of the above families who have other knowledge, records, information or photos of any of these family members.

Everything I have found is online here and I attached all the records I could find in the ancestry database. Contact me if you are researching this family from Cokato, Wright, Minnesota.

John Henry and Guri Helland

I have been researching my great grandparents John Henry and Guri H. Helland. I have found census and civil war records and have been able to piece together a few bits of information which I will list, but I would like to find out their parents, where they came from, and who they emigrated with. My father said John was from Stavanger.

I have the date of Guri's emigration from Norway, 1867, but I cannot find her on ship lists. I've tried any variation of Guri, Gura, etc., wild card searches, approximate ages, but cannot find her in 1867-69 records, not knowing her last name, . I don't have John's date of emigration. It was earlier, because he served in the civil war in 1865 in Illinois, Private in Co. C., and he is on the civil war pension list. His name is sometimes spelled Holland.

In the censuses for 1880, 1900 and up to 1930 they are spelled Heland and Hellenda, etc.; occasionally the correct way, Helland. John is not in the 1870 or 1880 census or I can't find him (have also tried Johannes, Johan, Hans, etc. but no certain match).

John and Guri's children were Martha, Julia, Gustav, Cornelius, William John, and George.

John had a homestead in Crookston, Marshall Co., Minn., and he died intestate in 1897. The widow and her son in law petitioned to have the homestead for the family and won.

Both Martha and Julia were married to men named Nelson; Martha to Nels K. Nelson and Julia to Alexander Nelson. Both had several children, all living in Minnesota. The children were : (Julia's): Gudrun, Carl, Mirtle (?), Walter, Norman and Lester; (Martha's): Gertrude, Carl J., Ruth, and Elmer J. who was adopted .

I know my grandfather Cornelius was born in 1880 in Dakota Terr. so they lived there for a while. He married Anna Kvislen who came from Ringebu, Norway at age 16 in 1900.

Do any of you have any of these people on your family tree?
