Hi (whoever you are ! )

Saw your post on the ancestry message board. I am interested in a Thomas Hellier Madge born abt 1800 in Plymouth, Devon. I assume his father (or perhaps grandfather) married into the Hellier family. Do you have any Madge/Hellier unions on your file please ?

Many thanks

Adrian (grandson of Ellen Madge)

Alice Hellier, Rockland, Maine (1898)

I have no connection to this family. This story is in the March 5, 1898 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier in the "Talk of the Town" column:

"Alice Hellier had her collar bone broken Tuesday afternoon while coasting near Rankin street. The sled and its burden were going at a rapid rate when they suddenly collided with atree, throwing Miss Hellier against the latter with great force."

I looked up Alice Hellier on the 1900 census for Rockland the only one who lived near Rankin Street (in fact she lived ON Rankin Street) was Alice M. Hellier, born March of 1882. Whe I looked up Maine marriage records for Alice M. Hellier, was a marriage on May 31, 1921 to James A. Jameson of Rockland. Also on that 1900 census, I find that Alice's mother, Emma O. Hellier, was born in Oct. of 1851, had two children, both of whom were living, and was widowed. The strange thing is that she lists her marriage as being in 1898 - I supect that's probably the year her husband died. Anyway, Emma's father, George W. Vinal, who was born in Maine in Dec. 1821, was also widowed, and living with his widowed daughter and her two children: Alice M. and Edward J. Hellier, born Jan. 1877.

Thomas Hellier ~ Lynched in 1678

Guilty of "flapping his hands and arms" and "behaving in a peculiar manner," the 14-year-old white boy Thomas Hellier became a suspect in a rash of thefts and was sentenced to a life of bondage on a Virginia plantation. Never agreeable to his servile status, Hellier was sold several years later to a harsh taskmaster named Cutbeard Williamson. After Williamson, Williamson's wife, and a maid were murdered with an axe while they slept one night, Hellier was assumed to be the murderer and hanged by a mob on August 5, 1678. His body was lashed with chains to a tall tree overlooking the James River where it remained for several years until it rotted away.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a site called "American Lynching." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.americanlynching.com/main.html

We have ancestors called Hellier, earliest I have got back to is James Hellier born Devon 1801. Most of his children were born in Ottery St. Mary and following generations born in Colaton Raleigh. His great grandaughter married a Vickery from Collumpton in 1923. Not sure whether there is any connection as I don't know which area of devon James was born in yet.

Hi, I came across your article on your uncle's immigration to Canada. My last name is Hellier as well. My grandfather's name was James Norman Hellier and his dad immigrated from England. His name was James Hellier. His family settled in York in Toronto, Ontario. He married my nanny Sybil Nepean there. She too was from England origionally. They've both passed on now. I have to wonder if we're somehow related. I know that gramps said his family was initially from Wales but had moved to England before coming to Toronto. Would love to hear anything more you know about your Hellier relative as it could be mine as well.

thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,Debbie Hellier

or email me at Debber48915@yahoo.com

Hellier - Somerset, UK + South Africa

At a family gathering last weekend I was lent some Victorian Hellier photos relating to the Hellier family from Wick St Lawrence and Nempnett in Somerset, United Kingdom. This branch of the family intermarried extensively with the Griffin family, and some of the family emigrated to South Africa in the 1840s.

I have scanned some of the pictures and posted them at Ofoto.com. You can see them at the following URLs:
http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=8ziqq0f.3ds9bnqf&x=0&y=...
or
http://tinyurl.com/2p2ms
I realise that your message was posted a few years ago now, but just wondered if the John Hellier you mentioned could be the brother of my gr gr grandfather, William Hellier. John was born 1825, Cullompton, Devon; His father was Samuel Hellier, mother Maria Dadd.

Don:
Somehow I got a message from you, originally meant for Melissa regarding Hellier. I have no idea what you are looking for, but I remembered a Hellier in the family tree. Though there is some doubt as to who our ancester really married. We have three names. Thomas Hartnell m Betty Wilbur? Hatcher? or Hellier? (could be Betty Hatcher Hellier) Thomas was born in 1787 in Chalden Herring, Dorset, England and m. on April 29, 1813. I don't know why there are so many names Unless he married two or three times. This information was given to me by a cousin from England. Daryle Stephenson

I don't know which is correct) Betty Wilbur, Betty Hatcher or Betty Hillier. thomas was born in Chaldon-Herrin, Dorset. I don't know if they lived there after they married or not.
Hellier

My great uncle James Hellier emigrated to Canada in 1904 from Liverpool, England to Halifax. He sailed in the ship 'The Lake Erie" with his wife. He was a farmer aged 33 years. I would like to make contact with any of his descendents. Some of his brother in laws and sister in laws also went to Canada and settled in the Hamilton area but as yet I can find no trace of them. More information about this family Hellier, Nigh and others may be seen at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.sparshatt/Index.html/WC_TO...
