Hi

I've just started my family tree, who are not Hillyer's, sorry, but my Great Grandparents - Daniel and Sarah James, who had daughters Mary, Gladys and Ann - lived at the Royal Sovereign, Northam, Southampton. My Mum remembers going their with her Auntie Gladys and Grandmother, Sarah James.

I wondered if your family have any memories of the pub and if they remember my family?

Sue

Hellyer's in Queensland austrailia

I am aware that a branch of the Hellyer family arrived in Moreton Bay on board the s.v."Gauntlet" on November 15, 1873, after sailing from London on August 15th 1873. Listed in the Immigration is a Charles HELLYER, aged 23; his wife Elizabeth aged 22 and their sons, Charles aged 3 and William aged 1 year. I have a high suspicion that I am decended from this branch of Hellyers, but unfortunately I cannot reach any further back than my grandfather David Foster Hellyer(m. Nancy Lila Siebenhausen, d-ruth, d-heather, s-ronald). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Helyer

Hi all, I have been searching for more information on my mom's side of the family. My grandmother was a Helyer (spelled this way) from Glascow Scotland, but did not keep in touch with any relatives except an aunt Jean Sloan (married name) any ideas on how I find out my great grandmothers maiden name? or what do you think I should do next. My grandmother her mother and brother immigrated to New York, which is where my grandma met my grandpa. I have bits and pieces and really just want to see if I have any relatives in Scotland since it hasnt been that many generations ago. Thanks for any help or advice you can give, Jamie

Hi Steph

I'm from Mount Gambier. Is Robert still living? As I said I am yet to do a lot of research but here is what I know but not confirmed. Robert had 2 sisters Shirley & Betty. Walter (Mick) had 3 brothers & a sister. Ernest Oliver (my grandfather) William, Reginald & Caroline Myrtle May. Caroline suicided at age 20 & my aunt tells me that Reginald was actually her son. That is not confirmed.
I am also lead to believe that Mick married twice. I think his second wife's name was Hazel. The three children were by his first wife.

Regards

Darryl

Hi there.

Do you have any overlap with my Hellyers, I wonder?
I'm descended from James John Hellyer, b 1791 and his wife Ann Amelia (surname unknown). James died 1846 Portsea. His son George Hellyer was b1821 Portsea, both were plumbers. There were multiple Hellyer offspring so I won't go into them all, but James John is the earliest I have gone back. Would love to know if we overlap (or not)!

Cheers,
Tamsin

Good morning Doug

Thanks for coming up with that info on both of those Hellyer families.
My family, if you didn't already know, is the line of George Henry Hellyar and Catherine Martyn from Cornwall. Their son, also George Henry Hellyar settled at Port Fairy (he was a "Pioneer") as was anyone who came to Australia so early! His family spread all around Victoria and across to South Australia and New Zealand.
When I started my research I thought there were only a few Hellyers in Victoria, as I had really only been aware of my mother's direct family, and her Aunty Edna. This "journey" has brought to light a huge network of Hellyars and their families.
If you want to know anything about Mum's line of the Hellyars please feel free to email me at molkron@bigpond.com.
Cheers, Kirsten
Hello Kirsten,
I found the following information in an Australian biography book.....

Henry Hellyer (1790 - 1832), explorer and surveyor, second son of eleven children of John Hellyer and Betsy Maine of Porchester, Hampshire, England. Arrived Van Diemans Land on 4 March 1826 on the Cape Packet.
This info put to rest "our family story" that we were related.

My ancestor is John Lidger Hellyer who arrived in Geelong Aust. in 1852 from Devon with wife Jane Rider. John was the brother of the James Ewens Hellyer who settled in South Australia with Eliza Hammond.

As far as I can tell, all the Hellyers in the Melbourne telephone directory are related to each other and go back to the family from Port Fairy/Belfast, except for me!

I hope this is of some help,
Regards,
Doug Hellyer
Melbourne, Australia.

Good evening. I am Kirsten, descendant of Joseph Hellyer and Ellen Kofoed (grandparents). Hellyer parent is Nellie Evelyn Hellyer (their daughter).

I have been trying to find relatives of Henry Hellyer who was the Government Surveyor in Tasmania, and after whom many places are named in NW Tassy (Hellyer Gorge, Hellyer River, Hellyer Rd., Hellyer College, etc.) Is there any chance you might be related to this line of the family? If so I would love to try to find the connection. Look forward to hearing from you. Kirsten Firth (ex Lagoni and mother's family name Hellyer).

You can see much info on my Family Tree HELLYER/KOFOED.

HENRY HELLYER - FAMOUS SURVEYOR IN TASMANIA AROUND 1825

Hi there. I am researching the family of JOSEPH HELLYER and ELLEN KOFOED who lived in Victoria. Joseph born Port Fairy 1886, died Melbourne 1955. Ellen born 1890 Williamstown, died Elsternwick (Melbourne) 1943. (They arrived in Port Fairy from Cornwall in mid 1800's and there is now an extended Hellyer family throughout country Victoria as well as South Australia and New Zealand)

This has led me to also take an interest in HENRY HELLYER who surveyed Tasmania in the 1800's, after whom HELLYER GORGE, HELLYERS ROAD, HELLYERS ROAD DISTILLLERY were named. There are also other "memorials" in NW Tasmania to this gentleman.

Can anyone shed light on this gentleman - his parents, descendants, etc. etc.

Thank you,

Kirsten Firth/Melbourne/Australia

Hi Terry

Bingo!

Ok, I no longer have access to the census other than what is freely available on here and www.familysearch.org

However,

04 Jan 1880 Susie Elizabeth Hellyer bapt ( I have St Marys, familysearch says Christ church which is freemantle) d/o Frederick Hellyer & Harriet (nee Painter)

The family are living together on the 1881 census at 18 Millbank St. In 1901 I have Frederick as a possible publican of the Coopers Arms.

My baptism info is from the index card system at Southampton archives at the Civic Centre.

Ok, now Susie had 5 brother & sisters that I know of.

Her father, Frederick, was born in 1839. Baptised 27 Apr 1839 s/o James Hellyer and Mary (nee Oliver of Eling ) at St. Marys. Then living at North Front Kingsland.

Frederick was the brother of my G x2 grandmother, Mary Hellyer born 1836.

Frederick married Harriet Painter on 24 Aug 1862 at Northam Parish. He was of full age and a boiler maker.

Fredericks father was James Hellyer, stone mason and Harriets father was James Painter a labourer.

This marriage was again taken from records at Southampton Archives.

I have a full tree for your family going back to the earliest traceable record, around 1700 (from memory). It's all on an external hard drive though so if you give me some time, I can create a pdf for you with the information. I'll need your email address to send it to.

It's good to know what happened to Susie, as on my tree, I have nothing further for her as I hadn't traced her any further. So if you can give me further dates and details of her marriage and children etc, that would be great. If you have any photos, I'd love to have a copy as I feel it brings the tree to life.

So, we're related, albeit very distant :)

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Debbie

Thanks for the reply Debbie. The pub was in Kent Street or William Street called the Royal Sovereign. My grandmother was a daughter of the publicans. Her name was Susan E Hellyer (or Hellyar), born 1880. She taught music, married Philip James Underwood, a merchant seaman from Essex who ran coal from Tyneside down to the south on barges. One their daughters, another Susie, was my mother.

I don't know Susan Hellyer's parents' names; you wrote that you have access to the census?
Hi Terry,

Thanks for getting back to me.

My Hellyers were ceratinly in the Millbank St area in the 1800's. I haven't got details of a pub though. I do have a lot of information on families of Hellyers who were in and around Northam at that time.

Prior to that, I've traced my line back to Netley/Hound. One of them ventured out to North Baddesley and then back to Shirley and I'm in contact with a direct descendant form that line in New York.

Lots of John's, Edwards and James'. But I seem to have lost them after early 1900's.

My link is a G x 2 grandmother, Mary Hellyer, who married a George Phillips from Botley. They also raised their family in Millbank St. I just got carried away with the Hellyers and traced a good size tree with them.

Anything sound familiar?

Debbie

Hi Debbie

If your Hellyers ran the Royal Sovereign pub in Millbank Street or William Street in Northam, then I am directly related to them.

Terry
