Albert William Helmuth died in 1972 in San Diego. I was married to him previously, if it's the same person. He was fostered out in Philadelphia at a young age, but was born into the Helmuth family. I don't know the name of his father. More information....contact me.

Thank you for your message. The Philip Helmuth who was the father of Charles Helmuth was probably different from my great-great grandfather. We have no records of a Charles or Louisa Helmuth in our family, and my great-great grandfather was still living in 1882 when he was divorced from Mary Strickland Helmuth. I have since heard that following the divorce he played in a band or orchestra in New York, but I have no hard evidence to verify this. The Philip Helmuth you mention interests me, since he also came from Germany and lived in New Jersey. Again, thank you for your message.

Joseph Brower

I sent to the National Archives for more information, but have not yet heard back.

Thank you for the info on the Helmuth-Strickland marriage, and please forgive my delay in responding. Your information contained details of which I had not previously been aware - especially that Philip Helmuth had been divorced when he married Mary Strickland. I had previously thought that he was different from the father of Charles and Louisa, but these newer bits of information seem to indicate otherwise. I have a copy of the divorce decree between Philip and Mary - it is hard to read, being handwritten, but it took place in 1882 in Ocean County, New Jersey. He was a shoemaker according to census records, and one rumor that I've heard was that he did move to the Trenton area. This would support the Trenton residence in 1900. In the near future, I will post a chart of my family's descent from Philip Helmuth. Does anyone have any information on descendants of Charles and/or Louisa?

Mary Strickland / My line of descent from Philip Helmuth

Philip Helmuth was my GGGrandfather on my mother's side. I am descended from his marriage to Mary Strickland. My grandfather, Cecil Halmuth (note change in spelling)remembered Mary Strickland Helmuth - in fact, he lived with her after his mother died in 1908, the day after his 8th birthday. Sadly, Mary Strickland died soon after (Nov. 1, 1910) - suddenly - he told me she was peeling potatoes for dinner when she died.

My direct line of descent from Philip Helmuth is as follows:

Philip Helmuth (1834-?) - Mary Strickland (1840-1910)
Edward Halmuth (1874-1944) - Bertha Clayton (1878-1908)
Cecil Kenneth Halmuth (1900-1972) - Luella Cook (1902-1962)
Bertha Sarah Halmuth (1924-1970) - Gilbert Joel Brower (b. 1920)
Joseph Gilbert Brower (b. 1949)

(Notes: Each generation listed above has other siblings. I will supply them at a later date. This should help in discovering additional cousins.

We always referred to my GGrandfather as Edward Halmuth, but recently discovered evidence that his real name was Henry Edward Halmuth.

The change in spelling was attributed to the aforementioned Edward Halmuth. The story goes that following the death of his wife Bertha, he remarried in 1910 and his second wife wanted him to take the 'Hell' out of Helmuth, so he began signing his name 'Halmuth'.

Hello Karl:

It was great to read your messages and learn of you! My father talked of Victor and
Emily Paul for years. Although I never met either of them, I did know Idella Fisher (my sister and I always went to their house on Halloween). The Fisher house in Brick, NJ, is now a haircutting salon.

There are branches of the Dennis family living in Brick Township, NJ, which are probably related to you. If you haven't checked already, there is a genealogical research library at the Ocean County Historical Society in Toms River, NJ, which may have additional information. I usually go there on weekends, so I could see what they have on the Dennis and Paul families. I did get some Havens / Strickland information there.

I responded to your Paul family listing with a query concerning the ship Cranford.

Thank you for the information you provided. Philip Helmuth seems to be a mystery man concerning his final years - I have not been able to find much about him following his divorce from Mary in 1882. I look forward to sharing information with you.

Joe Brower
