I know nother other than he was born in New York around 1836. Married in Sullivan County not far from me.

No I am not. I fell across something last night. In the 1850 Census I found a matching birth year for William D. Hemstead - No P in the name. He was age 14 and staying with Ferdinand Forshay and family. He is listed as a Household Member. Do you think perhaps he was not born in New York and he was sent over with other people?

Robert and Joane Hempsted had three (3), and only three (3) children. The following is attatched to Robert Hempsted's will, dated June of 1655:

"The ages of my 3 children.

Mary Hempsted was borne March 26th, 1647

Joshua Hempsted my sonne was borne June 16, 1649

Hannah Hempsted was borne April 11, 1652.

This I Robert Hempsted testifie under my hand."

The introduction to THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD (1999 edition) published by the New London County Historical Society shows Mary (b. 26 Mar 1647), Joshua (b. 16 Jun 1649) and Hannah (b. 11 Apr 1652) as the children of Robert and Joane Hempsted.

FYI, the DIARY (correctly) doesn't name Joanna WILLEY (WILLIE) as his wife because Robert Hempsted probably wasn't married to Joanna Willey...but that's another matter.

Robert, Magdalena, Caulkins and Josiah are not of the New London Hempsted Family; they are a figment of the "Ancestry.com cut-n-paste imagination." ; -)

(above quotes are from HISTORY OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, From the First Survey of the Coast in 1612 to 1860, by Frances Manwaring Caulkins; and THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD)

Robert Hempstead had no daughter named Magdalena

Hello,

Robert Hempstead did not have a daughter named Magdalena (or a son Caulkin for that matter). The introduction to THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD (1999 edition) published by the New London County Historical Society shows Mary (b. 26 Mar 1647), Joshua (b. 16 Jun 1649) and Hannah (b. 11 Apr 1652) as the children of Robert Hempstead and Joane. It (correctly) doesn't name Joanna Willey as his wife because Robert Hempstead probably wasn't married to Joanna Willey...but that's another matter.

HISTORY OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT by Frances Manwaring Caulkins has this: "Robert Hempstead, died in June, 1655. The following memorandum is appended to his will: 'The ages of my 3 children. Mary Hempsted was borne March 26th, 1647. Joshua Hempsted my sonne was borne June 16, 1649. Hannah hempsted was borne April 11, 1652. This I Robert Hempsted testifie under my hand.'"

I'm not sure where Magdalena fits in. I'm a descendant of Elizabeth who married John Plumbe 13 Feb 1689.

Chuck Plumb

Elizabeth Hempstead in Historical and Genealogical Record

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Elizabeth HEMPSTEAD was born 24 Dec 1672, the second (or third) child of Joshua and Elizabeth LARRABEE HEMPSTEAD (differing sources record Phebe's birth in either 1669 or 1676). She was born in the original homestead dwelling built by Robert, her Grandfather, close to the location of the Hempstead House. At the age of 5 or 6 she moved with her family into the present-day structure (museum) still standing in New London, living there for the next 10 years until her marriage. She (Elizabeth) was baptized 29 Dec 1692 by Rev. Bradstreet, Pastor of New London 1st Church of Christ.

Shortly after Elizabeth's 16th birthday in 1688, her marriage bann was published, for she married John PLUMBE, son of John and Elizabeth GREEN PLUMBE 13 Feb 1689. Their first child, Elizabeth, was born 27 Feb 1690, John, 21 Nov 1692, Abigail, 1 Jan 1695, Joshua, 3 Aug 1697, Sarah, 22 Dec 1699, Peter, 26 Dec 1700 (at sunset), Lydia, 24 Apr 1703, Hannah, 15 Jul 1705 (on Sabbath day at sunrise), Daniel, 12 Jun 1708 (died 28 Sept), Patience, 4 Mar 1710 (on Saturday night eight of the clock, and died 22 Mar 1711) and Elisha, 10 Mar 1712 (on Monday four of the clock in the afternoon).

Of these 11 children, only 5 survived into adulthood: Elizabeth (Thomas Bartlett & Joseph Truman), John (Hannah Harris), Joshua (Amy Schellenger), Peter (Hannah Morgan) and Lydia (John Monroe). Abigail died age 26, a "poor idiot" according to her Uncle Joshua Hempstead; Hannah at age 16, and the other four children as infants or toddlers.

Elizabeth joined the New London Church in 1693 (with her husband John). She was named as an heir of her Mother's estate 30 Dec 1727. On 4 Dec 1732 she is named co-executor of her husband John's estate, along with her son John (John refused to serve). On Thursday, 13 Sept 1733 she became ill, and after a weeks illness died 19 Sept 1733, with her brother Joshua at her side (among others). She was buried at the side of her husband John in the Burial Place adjacent to the New London Church. John PLUMBE, Elizabeth's son, served as executor of her estate.

On 10-11 Sept 1736, Joshua Hempstead mentions that he is inscribing John and Elizabeth's gravestone. The inscription remains to this day, although the stone has been severely weathered. The inscription on this sizable tablestone reads: "Here lies the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Plumbe; Here lies the body of John Plumbe Esquire."

Elizabeth (and John's) children and grandchildren lived in or around New London for the next 100 years, and remained involved in community affairs (according to historical record) for 60 years. Green Plumbe (Margaret Bolles), Grandson, son of Peter, appears in Town Records as Constable and Rate Collector until about 1790, before removing to East Haddam.

The above biographical data is supported by a large body of both original historical record and genealogical information compiled over 275 years.
A number of public trees show the father of Magdalena Hempstead (1665-1733) to be Robert Hempstead (1638-1655), him being dead 10 years before her birth. Was there a typing error that has carried through by attaching via connections? Does anyone have the correct information?

I'm sorry that I cannot help you with your Henry Hempstead, but you can rule out the one in Massachusetts.

He was Henry E. Hempstead (12 Jun 1820 - 21 Dec 1862), son of Ebenezer and Thankful (Whipple) Hempstead. His wife was Hannah E. Merrill and he was a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War. He died of illness in Virginia.

There is a photo of him at ancestry.com - do a search for his name in military section.

This army chaplain was the brother of my 2nd great-grandmother and I'd like to learn more about him, hoping to flesh out my Hempstead ancestral line. If anybody has information I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.

Nanablue- I am so new at this I failed to include vital info. Rebecca was born in 1843 and their son Samuel was born in 1869. Some sources say Henry's birth was 1842 but I have found no proof. I know her first husband died in the Civil War and the family story is that Henry came through preaching..they met, married and she left with him. Rebecca soon returned expecting Samuel David. Circuit Rider life was very taxing as I have read esp. on wife IF they had one. Thanks for the 1860 census. I didn't have that info and it may be something to go on.

Help! I am trying desperately to continue the family search. I can not get beyond my gggrandfather. He was a circuit rider and married widow Rebecca Havard Taylor. She was from then Greene County, MS. now George Co. with 2 small children so it had to be in that area. I can not even find a circuit he would have traveled. His name was HENRY HEMPSTEAD. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This according to personal communication with Mr. Bill Yates of the Yates Publishing Company.

Chuck Plumb
Sierra Vista, Arizona
The Marriage and Wife of Robert HEMPSTEAD

Hello,

I no longer believe with confidence that Robert Hempstead (Grandfather of Elizabeth Hempstead, who married John Plumbe) was ever married to Joanna WILLEY. I've been running across skepticism among historical researchers I've read for quite a while (New York Genealogical and Biographical Journal, Volume 51 is just one credible example).

The final determining factor for me was THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD. The New London Historical Society must share this skepticism, for in the introduction, they list Robert's wife as simply "Joane."

Not once does Joshua Hempstead refer to the WILLEYS mentioned in his DIARY as his trademark "Uncle, Aunt or Cousin," as one would expect if Joanna WILLEY were his Grandmother. And he only has 14 references total to the WILLEYS, not as many as might be expected if they were his Grandmother's family.

If anyone out there has historical or documented evidence of the HEMPSTEAD/WILLEY marriage, I'd love to see it.

Chuck Plumb

Early New London (1650-1775) Hempstead Graves

Hello,

Does anyone happen to have knowledge of whether or not they survived, and if they did, possibly even have pics of the very early New London Hempstead graves: Robert & Joanna Willey (sp), Joshua (Sr.) and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead, Joshua the Diarist, and some of the other children of those first 3 or 4 generations.

My ancestor (Elizabeth 1672-1733, daughter of Joshua, Sr. and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead, and Joshua the Diarist's oldest sister) is buried in the Antientest Burial Place with her husband John Plumbe; Mary Hempstead married Green Plumbe (they later divorced) but I don't seem to find them or any others there.

I'd also love to know how many Hempsteads & Plumbes are buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London; I've been told that quite a few graves were relocated from the Old Burial Ground to Cedar Grove. Any help deeply appreciated!

Thanks,

Chuck Plumb

Elizabeth Hempstead Marriage

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone could help me, or direct me to the proper source. I was wondering if there is any document or record that says Elizabeth Hempstead (1672-1733), daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead married Isaac Lamb (1664-1723)?

I was astonished to see the number of family trees that claim that marriage. Historical record (including New London Town Records, Vital Stats, and her brother's DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD) establish the Elizabeth Hempstead-John Plumbe marriage, or am I missing something?

Joshua Hempstead doesn't even mention the death of Isaac Lamb in 1723; the most he says is on one occasion when he says he slept overnight at Isaac Lamb's house in Groton (and he doesn't say "Brother Lamb," as he would always say about family members).

One possibility I've thought of is that there was a branch of the Hempstead family in Massachusetts where Isaac Lamb lived before New London, and maybe a daughter named Elizabeth.

By the way, I've read Isaac Lamb's will; his wife's Christian name is "Elizabeth," but he doesn't give any parents, and does not mention any connection to the Hempsteads.

Thanks,

Chuck Plumb
I just read your post. I'm looking for Henry Hempstead toothat was born in 1837 (I think). She had about 3 children by him. He married Sarah ??? (I think) I'm interested in Sarah's maiden name because I can't go any further because I don't know it. She later married George Gray. I was told she had Indian blood. I do know her daughter by George Gray looked like a full blooded native American. She was my grandmother. Havr you heard of Henry and Sarah Hempstead? If so do you know her maiden name????S.O.S.Kaye

Hempstead family Brooklyn to Bridgeport, CT

There's one small branch of my family out there that are Hempsteads that I've never met. Herbert Hempstead Jr. b. 11/5/1889 died in Sarasota, FL in 1971, he married Camille Mildred Neal in 1917 in Bridgeport, CT, they had one daughter that I know of, Camille Hempstead born around 1929. I cant find anything past that about any living relatives.

Herbert Hempstead Jr's mother was Alice Beal of Brooklyn, NY, she is my great-great grandfather's sister. The Beal family stayed small over the years but I am looking for the Hempstead branch that may be in Connecticut or Florida.

Re: John Hempstead b. 1709 CT to NY???

Updated Query!

Hampstead, Hemstead, Hampsted- I've seen it written several ways.

I'm trying to find out ANYTHING about a John Hempstead (Hampstead, Hampsted, Hemstead...) who in 1762 purchased land in Westchester Co. NY (in Stephentown later known as Somers). I found him on the 1790 census and someone had written in the margins that he was 96 yrs. old at that time. I also found a book written in 1848 that mentions John died in 1801 at 107 & 1/2 yrs. old and was buried in Somers NY. I'm pretty sure he migrated from CT as his daughter _________, married Henry Hitt of Greenwich CT, a descendant of Henry Hitt of Woodbury CT (per Maurice Hitt's book). They also moved into the Westchester Co. area but would have been middle aged even then.

Many sites name this John Hempstead as the son of the New London, CT diarist, Joshua, but the dates are all wrong. Joshua's son was born abt. 1708-9 but the John H. in Westchester Co. NY was born 14 years earlier, about 1694.

Have you run across this John Hempstead anywhere? I would really appreciate any ideas or suggestions you may have in locating this branch of Hempsteads.
John Hempstead b. 1709 CT to NY???

Does anyone have info on John Hempstead b. abt. 1709 in CT (son of diarist Joshua)? He married Hannah Salmon from Southold in 1731. Here's my problem.... In "The Descendants of Henry Hitt of Woodbury CT" by Maurice Hitt, one entry has a Henry Hitt b. 1726 in Greenwich, CT married to ____ Hempstead, daughter of John Hempstead of Cortlandt Manor NY. I'm pretty sure there was a John Hempstead in Cortlandt Manor, but I'm not entirely comfortable that he is the son of Joshua, the diarist (as I've seen in a couple of posted trees). Did John and Hannah move into Westchester Co NY? If so, did they have a daughter who married Henry Hitt? Hitt, Finch and Sprague family names are in my tree. Hempstead is my brick wall. If you know anything at all, I'd appreciate the help in proving the connection!

Hi,

Its been a while since I looked at these message boards - so I am a bit slow in responding - sorry.

Someone has told you where to find one obit source - find others by putting the names in google (but the Jesus College ones are about as good as they get).

The two are were the sons of Edmund Spencer Hemsted a GP born Whitchurch, Hants 2nd son of Dr Henry Hemsted (the church there has a memorial window to a Rustat Hemsted - which must be linked). He practiced in Kintbury and the Newbury area. The only obit I have seen is from the Newbury Weekly News - 14 Oct 1948. That gives a sort of family history linking him back through nine generations of doctors to Hemsteds that fled to Norwich from the Duke of Alva's campaign against the protestants in the Netherlands. Most of the information is checkable if the PRs survive - they link back through Isley Hall, Havershill, SFK to Norwich.

The NWN obit also mentions Tobias Rustat - public benefactor, erector of statues to Charles II and James II and endower of the Rustat Scholarships at Cambridge.

The Stephen Hemsted picture in the museum seems (to my eye) to be a poor copy of a work by a much better artist. An engraving of the other work is available in a 1948(ish) publication called the Inns of Sport - one of a series of small books on pubs published by Whitbread. Sorry I can't remember the artists names of the top of my head (pretty sure they can be found with google). You can pick up a copy from online beeksellers for around £10 (less if you are lucky).
The museum has their picture on the net (or did until the council changed its website - so you may need to rely on google's cache.
Seeking info on Frank Wm Hempstead who married Annie Baudro and then Lillian.
Frank's parents are likely William A Hempstead and Nulia Buddington.
Frank and Annie had a daughter name Beatrice born about 1920 in Groton or Ledyard CT. New London county. What happened to her?
I think Annie died in 1923 and Frank remarried to a woman named Lillian.
Hello again Marion,
Both the obituaries are on the Jesus College Annual Report 2003 on pages 109/110 The page loads as a PDF
http://131.111.243.80/alumni/publications/Annual%20Report%20...

I haven't done any further research on Stephen Hemsted and Mary Sellwood other than their marriage and children, but in 1851 there is a Stephen who is a surgeon age 48 born East Ilsley who is probably the grandfather of the Stephen and Edmund in the obituaries.
Sellwood is my maiden name and I am pretty sure that there is a connection somewhere to Mary Sellwood but I cannot find it.
If you would like to email me my address is veewatee18@hotmail.com

Regards
Victoria Sellwood Turner

West Berkshire Museum has a painting that sounds very like the one described - I would be fascinated to hear more about it (I will start googling as soon as I finish this.

Stephen Hemsted was a doctor and midwife who worked in East Ilsley and Newbury. He was coroner for Berkshire (or the Newbury area?) for a time. His son was also a doctor and coroner (I have a feeling his son was as well).

Stephen Rustat Hemsted is a descendent - his brother Edmund was pathologist for East Berkshire and kept up the links with the local coroner system.

Rustat is a surname that crept in somewhere - something to do with the founder of one of the Cambridge Colleges (google and you shall find). Obits of both brothers are on the web.

William Hempstead & Mercy Palmer - Madison Cty, NY ca. 1817

I am trying to trace the ancestry of my 4th great-grandmother Mercy PALMER. She was married to William HEMPSTEAD. They moved from Stonington, CT to Brookfield Township, Madison County, NY sometime around 1815 and had moved on to Onondaga County by 1830. I believe that "Mercy" may be the Mary PALMER who was daughter of Simeon PALMER of Stonington, CT (died May 1805) and his second wife Elizabeth DENNIS. This Mary had a sister named Frances PALMER. A Madison County deed dated September 17, 1817 in which William HEMPSTEAD, his wife Mercy PALMER sell land, lists Elizabeth and Frances PALMER as witnesses. Has anyone come across Elizabeth (DENNIS) PALMER, Frances PALMER, or Mary (Mercy) PALMER in their research?
