The introduction to the DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD, published 1999 by the New London County Historical Society has the following: "A Note on the Spelling of Hempstead...The name Hempstead had several different spellings in the colonial period. Joshua Hempstead and the town records of New London generally use 'Hempsted," while some colonial documents go as far as 'Hamsteed.'"

Elisha married Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Ozias Lewis and Mary Jones, in 1824. (Elizabeth Lewis was born on 01 Nov 1801 in Litchfield Litchfield CT and died on 10 Jun 1877 in Litchfield Litchfield CT.)

1. Advertised in the Litchfield American Eagle, 25 Aug 1823, "Elisha Hempsted, Informs the public that he has taken a shop a few rods west of the Court House, where he intends to carry on the different branches of Watch & Clock Repairing, Silver Smithing &c. He has on hand a few Watches, Chains, Scrolls, Keys, various articles in his line of business which he will sell cheap."

I have a Burton Hempsted in my database. prob from Michigan.

My husband's grandmother, (Luella Laney, widow of Robert Rausch of MO and widow of Thomas Deavers), m. Burton abt 1939 in Hemet, CA.

Burton had prob 2 sons from a prev. marriage. Ralph Hempsted was one. Elder family members may be able to supply some trivia.

yes this is a very unusual name indeed. My relative Polly Hempstead married a William Case on 13 DEC 1813 in Fredonia, New York. Here is the information on their children:

WILLIAM CASE was born May 13, 1794 in Hoosie, Rancellan County, New York, and died 1864 in Brochton, New York. He married POLLY HEMPSTEAD December 13, 1813 in Fredonia, New York. She was born 1797 in New York State, and died 1871 in Hokah, Minnesota.

they had a son Dillon Hempstead who's family still resides in Houston and told us they would send the family history but haven't done so yet. I guess they had some pretty extensive information that they sent my great Aunt back in the early 70's but are having trouble locating the information again. My aunt is in a nursing home for the last 10 years and can't locate her copy either so I thought I'd post a message to see if I could make any connections. What do you think??

I don't know if this is of any interest. My ancestors are from New Haven CT. Death Certificates and Interment Records show the surname as HEMPSTEAD. I recently had a chance to visit the family Grave site to find that all 13 of the ancestors buried there were recorded as HEMPSTED on the Headstones

I am a descendant of Polly Hempsted, who married William Case. Their 11th child as I understand it, was Westwood Wright, who married Kathryn Ladue (dau. of Phebe and Thomas LaDue). Their son James L. Case was my great grandfather. I am interested to know more about Polly and William as well.

I do not see a brother named Aaron listed. William's father was Jonathan Case and his mother was Alchee Cronkhite.

Polly Hempsted dau of Nathanial

Looking for information on Polly Hempsted b May 3, 1796 m William Case b March 13, 1794. I've found some information listing her father as Nathanial Hempsted and her mother as Ester Green.

Polly also had a sibling named Orson but I'm looking to find out if she had other siblings as well as where her parents were originally from. Polly was born in Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY but I'm not sure who the first in her family was to come to America. Anyone ever heard of these people??
