Hello,

The introduction to the DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD, published 1999 by the New London County Historical Society has the following: "A Note on the Spelling of Hempstead...The name Hempstead had several different spellings in the colonial period. Joshua Hempstead and the town records of New London generally use 'Hempsted," while some colonial documents go as far as 'Hamsteed.'"

Hempstead Family

yes this is a very unusual name indeed. My relative Polly Hempstead married a William Case on 13 DEC 1813 in Fredonia, New York. Here is the information on their children:

WILLIAM CASE was born May 13, 1794 in Hoosie, Rancellan County, New York, and died 1864 in Brochton, New York. He married POLLY HEMPSTEAD December 13, 1813 in Fredonia, New York. She was born 1797 in New York State, and died 1871 in Hokah, Minnesota.

Children of WILLIAM CASE and POLLY HEMPSTEAD are:
DANA FOX CASE, b. March 27, 1820, Williamsburg, Oswago Co, New York; d. January 11, 1899, Rock Rapids, Iowa of Spinal Meningitis.

ISAAC CASE, d. Unknown.
Occupation: MD

ALANSON CASE, d. Unknown.
Occupation: MD

JAMES CASE, d. Unknown.

MILTON WILDER CASE, d. Unknown.
Occupation: MD/Surgean

ALBERT CASE, d. Unknown.
Occupation: Congressional minister

CHARLES CASE, d. Unknown.

WESTWOOD CASE, d. Unknown.
Occupation: Methodist Minister, President Elder in Akran, Ohion and Adriau, Michigan, Preached in San Franscisco Berkeley

MARIA CASE, d. Unknown

? CASE, d. Unknown

I found a website with her listed that had her parents listed as Nathanial Hemsted d Jan 23, 1841 and Ester Green b 1751 d 1842

I also have a little information on her brother
Orson Hempstead B: 10 JAN 1811
Schohanie County, New York
M: JUL 1862
D: 23 FEB 1882 and his wife

Martha Davidson B: 24 JUN 1834
Daryegortaneye, County Tyrone, North of Ireland
M: JUL 1862
D: 3 MAR 1916 Houston, Minnesota

they had a son Dillon Hempstead who's family still resides in Houston and told us they would send the family history but haven't done so yet. I guess they had some pretty extensive information that they sent my great Aunt back in the early 70's but are having trouble locating the information again. My aunt is in a nursing home for the last 10 years and can't locate her copy either so I thought I'd post a message to see if I could make any connections. What do you think??
