Re: Death Certificate question

Hi Stephanie. First off, I had a couple similar situations in my family tree. As for the SS Death Index, it lists the last known 'residence'. This does not mean that person died in that place. It could be a different city, county, state and perhaps even a different country. Many small towns on state borders might use large hospitals in the next state. The SS Death Index will not show this. The death certificate is issued by the actual state in which a person died even if they lived in a different state. Also, the SSDI lists a the place where the person's last benefits came from. That does not mean they even lived or worked in that state. For instance, my grandfather worked in WV, OH and even Canada. But the company for which he worked was headquartered in PA so it lists PA on the SSDI.

If your grandfather died in SC, his death certificate should be filed in SC. If he is a veteran, veteran records might also list his place and date of death. If you'd like, let me know his name and any other vital statistics you have and I will try to help. As for SC death certificates, 1963 appears not to be available online - on the state vital records site they only have up to 1961 searchable. You have to request a copy beyond that. If they don't have it, I don't believe they will charge you. Here is the link to the SC site to request records: http://www.scdhec.gov/administration/vr/

According to ancestry.com's database, they do have SC death records from 1821 to 1955. Either SC has not released the rest for publication or they just have not yet been transcribed and entered into the data base. Many states will not provide records of events that took place in that last 50 yrs as identity thieves will try to use them. Sad but true. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Death Certificate question

This may be a dumb question but I'd rather ask than not ask. Does the last residence on the SS Death Index record for a person indicate the state in which he or she died? Also, is there any reason a person's death certificate (from 1963 -- North or South Carolina) wouldn't be in the Ancestry records?

I'm asking because I'm not quite sure which state my great grandfather actually died in -- I thought he died at the VA hospital in Columbia, SC, but his SS Death Index records lists his last residence as being in NC. He's buried in NC, but lived in SC at the time of death. I can't find his death certificate online or at Ancestry, and I'm not sure which state to request a copy from. I'm hoping that his death certificate will give me his parents' names. Until I can verify their names I'm kind of stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Stephanie F

Two of his daughters married Mizes. I am researching Sarah in an attempt of find out more about her first husband, John Mize's, death. He disappears during the Civil War timeframe but has not been found in Civil War deaths. Sarah had 2 children, Martha Jane and Nancy, with John Mize. After him, she married William Stapp. Wm already had a son, Eugene, and he and Sarah had several more children. They lived in Illinois.
I don't think Sarah and John's daughters lived to be very old. Am hoping some of the Stapp descendants might provide more clues.

I am looking for information about Ally Henderson, wife of Samuel s. Henderson of Jasper County, Georgia. Ally was born on 18 Aug 1779 in Maryland and died on 15 Dec 1864 in Jasper County. Some trees show her maiden name to be "Marchman", and other trees show it to be "Wilborn", but none include documentation of her name.
Does anyone have any information about Ally's family name and/or her parents?

Hi I am looking for some information on a James Henderson who was married to a Susan Somerville. They would have been married in the late 1890's. At one point they were living in Airdrie and possibly in Gorbridge Scotland. They had six sons and four daughters one of which was named Margaret. One of the daughters may have been named Susan. Margaret had a daugther in 1930 and this daughter was raised by her "aunt" Susan Wheightman in Hamilton Ontario Canada.

Thank you for pointing out that Grover's parents are listed as having been born in both NC and SC! I missed that. I haven't seen the 1920 census for Will and his wife yet, I'll go look at that. You're right, there is a pretty good case for their being Grover's parents. I originally had pegged them as the most likely based on census data about Grover, but the "parents born in" NC/SC thing threw me for a loop. There were two Grover Cleveland Hendersons in the same part of NC/SC at the same time, both born in 1895, both working at times in cotton mills, which has made things a bit confusing. I did find out that Grover also worked as an auto mechanic and doing auto body work at times, in addition to working in different textile mills over the years. I'm going to start looking for Grover's death certificate -- I'm not sure why I hadn't before. Hopefully that will shed some light on the subject.

Thanks again,
Stephanie

Hi,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, Grover Sr isn't my Grover. Oddly enough, there were two Grover Cleveland Hendersons living in the same area (Spartanburg and Gastonia) born in 1895 (but on different days). That's one reason I'm having trouble pinning down who my Grover's parents were. There are two Grover C's about the same age showing up in the same area with different families, both of which worked in cotton mills. I don't know his parents' names or sisters' names so I'm at a loss as to which is which before he got married.

My Grover married Mattie Viola Haynes and didn't have any sons named after himself (his children were: Garland, Betty and Bobbie (twins), Max, Ralph, Dalton, Dorothy (Dot), and Charles "Ray"). I know his death date for sure -- December 8, 1963 -- because my Dad remembers his death and I have a picture of his tombstone. I haven't found his death certificate yet -- thank you for telling me how to find it. I also know that my Grover was not a hobo -- apparently the other one may have been for a while. My Grover spent most of his adult life in Gastonia, NC or Asheville, NC. He moved back to SC after retiring and passed away at the VA hospital in Columbia, SC.

I've run across a couple of other people searching for information on this Grover online. They seem to be running into the same problems I'm having.

I'll start looking for the death certificate. Thank you! -- Stephanie

You can try different spellings of the last name, for instance instead of Maynard try Mayner or Mainer. John Mainer is listed in Gallia County Ohio in either 1870 or 1880. He is the father of Susan and her mother's name is Sarah or Polly. I know that at one point a David Henderson was living with them and was supposed to be their grandson. I can only assume he is the son of John and Susan. Hope this helps.

Sheryl

They emigrated with their children to Kingston, Kings County, New Brunswick. I don't have the exact date, but it was around 1820.

Re: HELP! Grover C Henderson - NC and SC

There's an obituary with Grover C. Henderson Jr. that was in the Greenville News 25 Nov 1993; page 4B in Greenville county, South Carolina. Jr's obit might give you a lead on Sr.'s death place to obtain an obit. He's not listed among the Greenville newspaper obits.

In the Spartanburg Herald I only find:

HENDERSON, GROVER
42, Enoree, 6–11–60 p. 9

HENDERSON, CLEVELAND
Union, h/o Floree Henderson, 8–12–69 p. 11

Then again verify his death on the SC death index, then order a copy of his death certificate from SC DHEC office in Columbia, SC. Normally the death certificate list father and mother's names, if known. You have a right to it being a descendant and it's about twenty bucks.

Did he not show up on the 1900 census in Canton with your Hendersons? If you haven't seen it, then your local library should assist in finding him or one of the LDS family centers will have census access also.

Are you certain you can rule out Will and Algie as the parents? 1930 census has Grover's parents born in South Carolina, but 1920 has them born in North Carolina. I also notice that Grover worked at a cotton mill in 1930 and 1920. The 1910 census shows Will and five of his children working at a cotton mill. 1920 census also has Will (listed as T. W.), wife, and two of their sons back in Haywood County, North Carolina. In 1900 census, this family is listed as Thomas and Addie, with 10 children, living in Haywood County.

North Carolina birth index shows Daisy and Charlie (the two youngest) born to Will Henderson and Aggie Miller in Haywood. The other children aren't listed.

To my eye, this all makes fairly strong circumstantial evidence for this being your Grover's family -- or at least enough to justify some more research. Unless, of course, you have some other information I'm not aware of.

T. W. Henderson died in 1932 in Haywood. Adgie M. Henderson died there in 1946. Perhaps one or both left a will. If you haven't seen Grover's death certificate, check to see if it has his mother's maiden name.

I am researching Garfield Henderson- New Zealand. Possibly James Garfield as one of his sons is named James Garfield Henderson, another son Bruce Raymore Henderson. The fist Hendersons came to Nz around 1890-1900 maybe later? I can't verify Garfield Hendersons age, maybe born 1870's ? but we do have a photo of him as an elderly man with his family, presumably taken in New Zealand. The photo is of 30 Henderson family members, wives and children it is dated about 1931-2 because Peter James Henderson is yet to be born. The Garfield Hendersons settled in NZ, married had their children and died here. Love to join the dots.

Charles Henderson's wife Arabella is the daughter of Arabella Dupree Hays Nye. H.H.Hays died in early 1838, and the following December 1838, Arabella, born 1800, married John Nye ("Captain Nye" of Mark Twain's "Roughing It.") John, born in New York State, was born in 1812, so he was 12 years her junior. In 1850 Arabella had 12 slaves; in 1855 she had none. In 1842 John and Arabella had a son, Tom. I believe John went to Alabama in the 1835 gold rush. Then in 1849 he went to the California Gold Rush, leaving Tom behind. In the Baldwin County Probate Court records for 1855 there is a 68-page case (not all pages are legible and I have not seen it) which appears to give guardianship of 12-year-old Tom to the husband of the sister of Arabella Henderson--in other words, to Tom's half-sister's husband. In 1860 Tom is in Placer County, CA, with his father. I leave it to you to draw a conclusion as to why he went West. Tom and his father then moved from Auburn, Calif., to Carson City in 1861 when Tom's father's brother (Tom's uncle) James Warren Nye was named Governor of the then-new Territory of Nevada. Capt. Nye and son lived in the same boarding house as Mark Twain. Kate Nye came to visit, and said neither John nor Tom knew how tomilk a cow because slaves always did that work.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Arabella Henderson's mother, Arabella Nye, was apparently in poor health. She disappears after the 1860 census, and I have not been able to find any evidence Capt. John ever tried to get to Alabama, although he went to Washington, D.C. in 1865. Tom remained west, settling in San Francisco.
If anyone knows anything more about Arabella Nye, the Tom Nye custodianship, or how he got to California, I would greatly appreciate your sharing it.
Bob Stewart, Carson City Nevada

Re: Alexander Henderson & Margaret Sked > Jean, b 1795, Scotland m Richard Christie > 10 children

Hi Michael,

Thank you for that information. I searched for the siblings of David Sked on the FreeREG website - I found an additional sibling, Agnes, born 17 July 1756.

It's a shame those transcripts were removed from the Family Search website.I find Scotland's People far too expensive.

Unfortunately, there are large gaps for Haddington on the FreeREG website and I haven't been able to find a transcript of David and Marion's marriage either.

Will keep looking,

Carla
