I have only just started researching my husband's family. His grandfather was Alec John Henly b. Apr 1875 London, Surrey, UK. Married Queenie Carrie Battelley July 1909. At one time lived in Bromsgrove, Worcester. Found him in WWI records as well as New York passenger lists on-line. Do you have any links to him?

Jan

Death of Jesse A. Henly - 1859

Taken from the Dallas Weekly Herald, Texas, 9 February 1859

Died at his residence, in Tarrant County, on the 16th ult., Jesse A. Henly, aged 30 years. The deceased emigrated from Tennessee to Texas, in 1845, and has since that time resided on the frontier of northern Texas. In all the vicissitudes, trials and hardships, incident to the settlement of a new country, he acted his part well. He was generous to a fault, noble, chivalrous, honest. In his death his adopted State has lost a true man, society a good citizen, his bereaved wife and child an affectionate, devoted husband; and his wide circle of acquaintances, a true and guileless friend. Let them hope that he is now in a better world than this "where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest."
Fred and my grandmother were brother and sister. Her name is Alice Henley. I have met you dad Lonnie and Aunt Penny a few years back. My mother with would of been you dad's first cousin and we also were able to meet Aunt Penny. Mother accomplished all of this before her passing on March 2,2009. We were able to find where her mother Alice was buried and we were also able to mark her grave. That hadn't ever been mark. It was mothers first time to her mother grave sight sence she pass away some 80 years ago. God aloud her to do this befor calling her home. I would be so nice if we could plan a get together with all you. We have attended a couple of the reunions. But meeting you all would mean the world. You all are the closet we have. When you mention to your dad you talk to someone tell him it was Sheila the one who lives in NY he will know the one you are talking about. I hope we talk soon. Take Care and god bless
Henly family tree uploaded

I have just uploaded my family tree (which includes a great deal of donated
information) onto the Henly website at

http://www.henly.org.uk/phpgedview402

It is a very large file, with around 46,000 individuals listed it. This includes around 1,600 people with the surname Henly/Henley (and variants).
Most of these are from the UK, but I would be very happy to add information on the family from around the world.

Please take a look and feed back comments. If you would like to add or change records then please register on the site. If you have your information in a Gedcom format then I can add it for you - it would be great to make this a comprehensive Henly/Henley family tree!

With best wishes

Clive Henly

Chippenham, Wiltshire, UK.
Would you have an Elizabeth Henly who married George Humphrey and came to Canada in 1875. They had three children, William, Lizzie and Ada. They supposedly came from Lancashire, but there is no documentation to that effect.
Ada married a fellow whose family began in Wiltshire, Garsdon. Ada was born in Canada in 1875 after the family arrived there.
Probably a long shot, but worth a try. Thanks Dawn

Hi Teresa - I am interested in the Henly's (various spellings) - particularly one Henry Henly (Henley). He was born about 1805 probably in North Carolina. He is in Maury Co, TN by 1831. Do you know anything about the Henley's in Randolph Co, NC? Census records of 1830 shows a Henry Henley (age 20-30) as head of the household which consists of one female (age 15-20). Ages are perfect for my Henry Henley (he would have been 25) and we know he married (probably in 1830) to 15 year old Mary Williams. Sure hope you can help me. Thanks....Susy Johnson

Henly/Henley family DNA Matching project

I have just set up a DNA-matching project for the Henly/Henley family through the FamilyDNA website at http://www.familytreedna.com/. The idea is for male members of the family to match their Y-chromosome DNA, which is passed from father to son in the same way as their surname. Hence any male Henl(e)y with a common ancestor will have matching Y-chromosome DNA – there may be slight deviations occurring every few hundred years, but these can be allowed for statistically. If you are not a direct male-line Henly yourself but you have a relative who is, then you could ask them to undertake the test on your behalf.

I would like to invite people from any strand of the Henl(e)y to join the project, especially those who haven’t traced their family back to the UK. There are Henl(e)y families with their roots in Wiltshire, Sussex, Kent, Devon and London, and it’s quite possible that we share a common ancestor back in the 13th or 14th century. I already am fairly sure that my earliest-known ancestor, Thomas Henly (c.1520-1580) of Wiltshire was closely related to a family of Henlys in Berkshire, and possibly from there they go back to the Henlys in Cranbrook Kent. As there is no extant documentation to help us, DNA matching may be our only chance.

The test is very simple (a cheek swab), and for project participants the cost is $99 for a 12-marker test, which is usually good enough to show two people are related over a period of several hundred years. We’ve just purchased the URL www.henly.org.uk, so I’m intending to set up a website to track the progress of the project as more people join in.

If anyone is interested in joining, please mail me at clive@henly.eclipse.co.uk.

Best wishes

Clive Henly

Seeking additional information on Jacob Henly, born in Pennsylvania prior to 1810, married Susannah Ishler, also of Pennsylvania, and eventually settled and died in Illinois after some years in Ohio. Henly has multiple possible original spellings and is of German ancestry in this case. Possible ancestral spellings were heinle, hehnly, hainly, but likely the first. Later spellings included Henley and Hanley.

Jacob's will is on file in Sullivan, Clark, Illinois. He died around 1870 and had several children.
