Re: Hensman family information

Hi.
My name is Paul HENSMAN, born England now living in Sweden.

I've also read a book concerning possible origin of our surname with much the same information.

I do have a problem with my surname as although my father
was Alexander HENSMAN and my grandfather was Llewellyn
Hensman, my great grandfather was SMITH. When he married in
1874 he was Frederick Henry SMITH. When llewellyn was born
in 1875 he was Frederick Hensman SMITH and at his daughter
Edith's birth he was Frederick Henry Smith HENSMAN.

Maybe Frederick's mother's surname was HENSMAN I don't know,
looking for Frederick SMITH is like looking for the
proverbial needle in a haystack.

The marriage and births ocurred in London. I don't think the
birth of Llewellyn HENSMAN in Stroud, Glostershire has any
connection to my family.

Anybody make any connection with my family?

Yours, Paul Hensman, Sweden.

Hensman family information

I am trying to trace Hensmans and related familys initially in the South Lincolnshire area prior to 1840.
I know of two elusive characters allegedly born at Thorney, I can not find which Thorney of several in the U.K.
Their names are John and Uriah. Both lived in Pinchbeck Lincolnshire during the early
1800's

In reply to Robins posting. I am Ian David Hensman from Lincolnshire. Maybe your Robins dads definition was not so far from the truth. My version is that Hensman is derived from Henchman which in turn came from the Germanic Hengistmann a keper of horses. However coming from a family of inveterate story tellers who have various tales of our origins as Jewish merchants, Hugenot refugees or German Hanseatic traders and none of these tales able to be verified as far as my line of the breed is concerned (we can only go back to the middle 1700's and a "John from Thorney") we cannot prove anything.
Hovever Happy Hensman Hunting
Best Wishes
Ian David H.

Ada Elizabeth HENSMAN b 06 Apr 1863 Holy Trinity Bedford was daughter of Peter Hensman and Sarah Rebecca COLES. She married Harry LANGLEY b 1857 ? , in Northampton in Holy Sepulchre church 24 Dec 1884. They had three children Eva ? about 1886 Cecil 1889 and Ethel May Edith Hensman 26 Jun 1890. I have no reference to either Ada or Harry after Ethel's birth. Ethel migrated to Australia in 1914 and married Frederick Lemoine AGER born 21 May 1892 Northampton. Can anybody shed any light as to what could have happened to Ada or Harry? Thanks

Hensman of Bedfordshire

My great grandfather Edward Thomas Hensman was from Bedfordshire and was born in 1862 and died 1932 in Felmishone. He was the husband of Martha Brock who was born in 1877 in Pemmbly, England. Edward was the father or John Thomas born 1912 and Catherine Margaret born 1917. John Thomas, my grandfather was born in Bedford and was married to Mary Louise De Loncre who was born in 1920 in Normandy, France. They were the parents of Philip Alexander born 1945, my father Andrew Thomas born 1948, Jane Alexandria born 1950, and Timothy James born 1956. Andrew Thomas married my mother Marion Julianne Casey born 1954 in Ireland. They are the parents of Christopher James born 1972, Alexander Michael born 1975, Peter John born 1978, Philip Andre born 1980, Caroline Patricia born 1984, and Thomas James born 1986. So, that leaves me...Caroline Patricia Hensman, not married...and in college in the USA.

My name is Robin Hensman and I am the son of John David Hensman who died a few years ago. I also would be interested in hearing anything about the Hensman history. My dad always used to say that the name came from a man who was a sort of right hand man to King Hengits. Hence he was called Hengit's man, which was shortened to Hensman.

Don't know if this is true but I would be interested if anyone knows more.

Warmest Regards

Robin

Hi Ian,
I stumbled accross this site while doing a bit of research of my own. I've only recently begun to look up the Hensman line.

Unfortunatey, I don't have any information on what you're looking for. My father is American, and currently a university student in Dublin, Ireland.
I would be interested though to see you findings so far, so that I might gain some further insight into my own heritage.

Thanks for your time,
Sandra.
