I looked up David and Agnes Herd in the 1901 census and did some research. David, b. 1852, is the child of James Herd and Christina Pittulo/Patulo/etc. James and Christina were m. in 1843 in Wemyss, Fife and had: Elizabeth b.1835, Ann b.1838, Janet Chalmers b. 1845, twins Robert Patullo and John b. 1850, David Grieve (your ggf) b. 1852 and James b. 1855. All were b. in Wemyss, Fife.

Of the above ch., Janet Herd m. Robert Brown, Robert Herd m. Isabella Thoms, David Grieve Herd m. Agnes Christie Birrell Galloway, James Herd d.1893, single, and twin John,b. 1850 does not show up on the 1851 census, so I assume he died young. I have not yet researched the others.

Janet who m Robert Brown had a son, Andrew Brown.

Robert who m Isa. Thoms had:1)Christina McBeath? Pittillo Herd b.1881, who m. Nathaniel Bond, had son, Francis Bond.
2) Mary Ann Thomas Herd, b.1886, 3)Janet Brown Herd b. 1888, 4)Isabella T.A. Herd b. 1893, m. William Bett,5)James Clark Herd b. 1893, 7) Jemina Herd b. 1900, m. James Mackie.

David Grieve Herd who m. Agnes Christie Birrell Galloway, (your ggp) had: Catherine, Christina, Agnes, Jessie, Davina, James, Alexander and Henry. Henry m. Edith Woodland, James m. Jane Young and Christina d. single.
I have not followed these people any further.

I'm sure there are more children. This was just a quick search. Everything is from "scotland's people.

In trying to link James Herd, (your gggf)who m. Christina Patullo, up to my family, I found that he was born in Canterbury, England. This is from the 1851 census where he states he was b. in England. On the 16 jul 1855 bc for his son, James Herd, he states he is 51 years old, b. Canterbury.

I have not done any research in England, so do not know who his parents are. On his son James' bc, it states that he is deceased. I did not find a dc for a James Herd that would match up from 1 jan 1855 (when civil registration started)to 16 Jul 1855, when his child was born. I assume he died in Oct, Nov or Dec, 1854, assuming conception was in Oct. (nine months back from Jul)

You might try to find the gravestone (Wemyss?)for James and see if there is any more information. He may be of Scottish descent, his parents having gone to England,or, he may be English. The only real way to tell is through English records, or, DNA. Our family is thinking about getting a DNA study going for the Herd family on the Scotland DNA project. You would need a male descendant, or maybe the daughter of a male descendant. You can check out their website for a wealth of information.

Our family goes back to George Herd, b. 1702 and Janet Dalrumple, William Herd b. 1738 and Janet Hutcheson and William Herd b. 1760 and Elizabeth Pearson, m. 1786, Kinglassie. William and Eliz. had: 1) William b.1787, 2) Betty 1790, 3) Agnes 1792, m.James Anderson, 4)Alex. 1800, m.Janet Watson 4)David Penman 1802, m. Isabella Rennie, 5)John 1807 m. Helen Bayne/Bain, 6)James 1811 m. Margaret Templeman. Towns are Kinglassie, Auchterderran, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Markinch, etc. There is a photo on the Fife Family History Website to be identified.

When my cousin and I were in Fife in 1979, we were told that everyone with the surname of Herd was related and call each other cousin. I would like to prove this. I am working on my family and will be sorting out all of the Herds in Scotland for a twenty year project.

I would be happy to hear how your research goes. Good luck.
