Herkimer Family Reunion?

Has the Herkimer family ever held a reunion? My wife is a sixth great granddaughter of Gertrude Herkimer, and we live just minutes from the General Nicholas (Gertrude's brother) Herkimer home in Little Falls, NY. Does the family ever gather to trade genealogy info? Is there a collection of Herkimer papers in a library that we should look at?

I too am a Herkimer (herchmer) desendent. I have a family tree that dates back to 1660. The information that I have is the General Nicholas Herchmer, born to Johan Jose Herkimer and Catherine Petri, Died in Battle Aug 16, 1777 and Left no Issue. He married twice to Lany Dygert and then Maria Dygert. This information comes from the book "Early Families of Herkimer County New York" Johan had 13 childern one of which was Yan Yose (Johan Yost) He married Maria Van Allen and had 8 childern one of which was Nicholas who married Charlotte Purdy. They had 8 childern one was Nicholas that married a Trenton having 3 childern and one was a Laurence which is the line I decend from. Up to this point this branch of the Herkimers (Herchmers) lived in Canada in the Point Collins and Kingston area. There are many Catherines on the Family Tree. Almost in every generation thru the mid to late 1880"s. I don't see and Daileys or Grabers. Do you have any of the family names that lead back ot Nicholas from you grandmother? I'd love to fill in any missing information on my tree as well as help you with yours. Thanks Cathy

Lossing, in 1848, in his "Field Book Of The American Revolution"
...A few rods west of the Church was the large stone mansion of the Herkimer family, which was stockaded & called Fort Herkimer....Drawing, traced from a rubbing of the stone above the original north door, of the initials, I(J)H Esq, for Jost Herkimer Esquire, the builder of the church, & the date, 1767. The date is probably, that of the construction of the masonry walls.
2)from a handout there are the following groups;
Friends of Herkimer Home, Herkimer Home Voluteers & Herkimer Home Historic Site
3) ...The two most prominently involved with the building of the chuch were Johan Jost Herkimer (father of General Nicholas Herkimer) & Augustine Hess. Herkimer's name is incised over the old north door & Hess's over the west door. The originnal church was finally completed in 1767....The Fort Herkimer church was entered on the National Register of Hirtoric Places on July 24, 1972.
40.
4)Revolutionary War Encampment & Tactical Demonstration... www.RWHCMV.2ya.com

Looking for researchers of this Herkimer line. George b. NY abt. 1827 found living in (likely) Perkins,Erie,OH in 1850 with wife Prudence - no children. Next found with (likely) Nancy J. Peckham 1860 Liberty,Henry,OH - first children Charles and Callista ages 9-8 (1851-1852), next child Elizabeth age one which leads to premise she may be his second wife. In 1870 there are other children to include Elmer b. (later census) Oct 1862 who later marries an Irish immigrant Jennie with first child (another George b. 1888 Lakeville,NY). Grandfather George is not found on 1880 US census; records indicate possibly 1871 in Ontario,Canada. In 1900 Elmer is in Galeton,Potter,PA - 1910 in Pavilion,Genesee,NY.

Hi, Cousin back! Just a quickie...Benjamin was the father of Nellie Mae Hickok who married my great-grandfather, Frederick M. Hoose @ 1896-7 in Hobart, NY. They moved to Brooklyn, NY around 1898 (to manage a dairy farm!) They were the parents of my grandfather, Francis M. Hoose and three other children who all died shortly after birth. Nellie Mae died in childbirth in 1914 and is buried in the Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart, NY. Francis M. married Rose Joyce (maiden name, not middle name) and they had Francis M. Hoose, Jr. who was my father (he passed away 5 years ago). Francis Jr. married Marie Fucikova in Czechoslovakia right after WWII and, well, here I am. I have 2 sisters and a brother. Let's continue this conversation. My email address is mjhoose@mcfnylaw.com

Herkimer Info

There are some very good sources of Herkimer family information, mainly the Herkimer County Historical Society, which is easy to access through the Herkimer/Montgomery County website (GENWEB). The book, "The Mohawk Valley Herkimers and Allied Families," (which I obtained through the above Hist. Soc.), traces the first immigrants, Johan Jost and parents Jurgh (George) and Magdalena, down to my Grandmother, (to my great delight!) and thousands of other descendants, with great source references. There are also copies of German documents ...birth, baptism, ...and wills. Besides giving name to the County and County Seat, Johan had a son, General, Nicholas Herkimer who is honored locally for one of the earliest (and bloodiest) battles of the Revolution at Oriskiny, and where he was also fatally wounded. Another website, The Olive Tree, is a good source for information on the Palatines and Loyalists, with a Canadian perspective. I'll be happy to do Herkimer name lookups from the book and somewhat limited information I have. Hope this helps.

Dear Nora:

I hope to spend more time with your very comprehensive answer, but right now I must explain my remark about those Herkimers who left the United States "in disgrace." This is, of course, a matter of point of view at the time.

Half of my ancestors fled to Canada; the other half stayed here; my mother was born in Winniped. I'm sure the ones who fled to Canada felt the behavior of those still in the US was disgraceful. I certainly did not mean to disparage those who left for Canada. It was a terribly difficult and painful time for all.

Carolyn McP.

I gather the Herkimer County Historical Society in NY has some information, however. It sounds as if some of the Herkimers went to Canada after the Revolution, so perhaps there was some scandal. Anyway, I will let you know if I learn anything more. Anyone else?

Dear Laura:

(I'm sorry this is not a personal reply, but your email address was incomplete in your posting.)

I, too, am tracking down Herkimers, as part of my family comes from Upstate New York, and my great-grandfather was named Benjamin Herkimer Hickok. I was always told Herkimer was a family name.

There seems to be some mystery attached to the Herkimer name. As you know, Nicholas Herkimer was a general in the Revolutionary War--US side--but I've not had a great deal of luck finding out what happened to the Herkimers that followed. I found a reference a generation or two later that said "All of that name are now removed from this county," and something I found somewhere suggested that several Herkimers were Tories, and went to Canada. So some of them (I gather) left in disgrace.

I can provide you with specific references to these facts if you don't have it already. Somewhere there is also a magazine article that tells about Gen. Herkimer's descendants, but I haven't gotten that far.

Carolyn McPherson
Ypsilanti, Michigan

I am actually trying to trace my Holmes roots, but have come across the Herkimer name and am tring to see the connection. I found that my great-grandfather, Oscar F. Holmes was from Danube, Herkimer County, NY. I was able to get this from their historical society, and was quite exicted as they had his brothers and sisters as well as his father and mother and also an uncle listed. They sent me all kinds of information. Now, of course, I would like to trace further back from his father, Ezra Holmes, and am looking everwhere. This is quite difficult, since Oscar was born in 1832, making Ezra born in 1791, but I am tring. Ezra was a resident of Danube for 71 years, and a deacon. In my research I have also come across an Anson Herkimer Holmes. His parents were John Abner Holmes and Charlotte Alida Herkimer. I am trying to see if I can find any connection to my Holmes. If you have any information you can email me at buck@jas.net or reply to this message.

Dear Mary:

As FJ Reynolds says, Herkimer is not a common name nowadays. I have been looking for it myself, as a great-grandfather (born in New York) has Herkimer as a middle name. Yet there seems to be surprisingly little about Herkimer family genealogy.
I have been rooting around the Herkimer County (New York) website. So far I have found 9 Herkimers, including Nicholas, who was a Revolutionary War hero, but none of the 9 matches is a Hannah. The Herkimers listed in the Herkimer Cemetery and the Herkimer Homestead Cemetery are: Joseph, Eunice, Nicholas, Alida, George (brother of Nicholas), Maria, Joseph (a child) and Sarah. A John Herkimer is also mentioned. This leaves dozens of Herkimers unaccounted for, as Nicholas was one of 12 or 13 children. Very strange.

Hello Mary Luketich,

I have passed over your Herkimer search a dozen times since it's posting in August. But, perhaps there is some connection between your Herkimer and an association between Herkimer's and Reynolds in the 1700's. Here is what I know.

Nicholas Herkimer b.1728 d. 1777. Born in New York State the son of German emigrants, Johan Jost and Katherine Herkimer. Both father and son were quite prominant in N.Y. affairs.

If you think there is a connection look in "Boatners, Dictionary of American Biography, Vol.VI. New York, 1931.

Herkimer is a rare name now days.
Beth,
I have very little on her really. I know that she married John Rody (whose family was from Green County, Indiana - Kokomo mainly) about 1928. They had 4 children - John Robert *Bob* in 1929, Janet in 1931 (she married Lloyd Branscum, Joan Ruth born in 1935 (she has been married 4 times), and James Herkimer Rody in 1937. John Robert Rody died in 1988!

John Rody Sr. died before 1946. He was a judge in Cass County, Michigan and is buried in St. Joseph, Michigan.

After John died, Elizabeth married Don Crago. They lived in the St. Joe area. I do not know any thing else on Elizabeth Crago. My husband says she was a nice person and they lived with her for several years.

Karen West
thewests@triton.net

Yes, I can help you wiht Elizabeth Herkimer I think. What do you need? And what do you have? I can trace her back to the Herkimers that came here from Germany. My line is a brother of Elizabeth's father who came to the Maybee MI area around 1836 along wiht 4 other siblings. Elizabeth was married in the Maybee area then moved to the west side of the state.I would be happy to give you help - perhaps it might be easier to correspond by email? Perhaps you can give me more info on the Jacob Herkimers who came to MI?

My ggg-grandma Mary Herkimer (1796-1870) born in NY died in MI claimed Nick as her father and so does the death certificate but no mother is given. Mary wed Abraham Smith. They came to MI ~1835 with 4 kids and had 5 more here. Of the children one was named Herkimer and another Nicholas.

Dear Scott, I can't help you go forward from Nicholas, but I can take you back a little. My Catherine was I believe sister to your Nicholas. In my query on March 12, 2000 on the Herkimer Message board, I have put all of my Herkimer information. You could, if you can follow my somewhat hard-to-read info, start with Catherine and work backwards (her parents Johann and Anna would be Nicholas' also.) Is that what you're looking for?
Herkimer Herchheimer, Germany>NY

I also have Herkimer connections, and am looking for additional information, especially pertaining to the family before immigrating to New York State in the 1700s. I have a Christoph Herchheimer (no dates) who had a son Georg Herchheimer (no dates). Georg Herchheimer married a Magdalena in Germany c1696. They had a son Johann Jost Herkimer, born 10 Jun 1700 in Sandhausen, Germany. He married Anna Catharina Petri sometime before 1722. Johann died 26 Aug 1775 at Fort Herkimer, German Flats, Herkimer, NY. This is the generation it seems where the name changed from Herchheimer to Herkimer. Johann and Anna had a daughter Catherine Herkimer who was born 10 Aug 1739. She married George Henry Bell 19 Jun 1753. She died after 1807. That's all of the Herchheimer/Herkimer info I have, but I have other on other parts of my family. Would love to find more info on the Herchheimers before they left Germany, or if anyone else has any related info. Am willing to share.

Do you have any further information about the Mink family of Canada? I am researching my GGGrandfather George James DeMink who was born in Canada and as the story goes his father fled Frontenac Cty. with his Cree Indian wife and they settled in Detroit where George was born abt. 1855/56. He married Mary Louise Allaman (spelling?) born abt. 1855/56 in Basel, Switzerland. We have not been able to find any info on DeMink, but have found a record of George with the last name of Mink. We were suspecting that there was some kind of name change.
Did anyone see the HGTV special Homes of our Heritage, featuring the NY home of Gen. Nicholas Herkimer? I was able to visit the home in June - it was great! The General was my 4th or 5th great uncle.

My researcher in Michigan found an Obit for Ruth May Herkimer. Does your wife go to the Reunions. Wonder if she could find out which Daughter, Christina, or Matilda was married to the Dentist.

Nan Curtis

Greetings to you, And a Happy Holiday Season.
We are now creeping into the "Herkimer's" it looks like.
Christine Hasley-Herkimer
Matilda )Tillie) Hasley-Herkimer.
Their parents: Daniel Hasley SR and Margarette Mann
I think their mother:
Margarette Mann-Hasley, b 26 July 1832 , around Sieferchiem, Hessen, Germany is the sister to my
GG-Grandfather,
Johann B. Mann JR. /b 10 June 1834, Sieferchiem, Hessen, Germany
Their parents:
Johann B. Mann SR and Margarette Maubus-Mann both born Hesse, Darmstadt, Hassau, Germany

I think it is Matilda Herkimer that my Grandmother Bertha Jeanette Mann remembers in 1920 when she was in Nursing School in Monroe, MI in the early 1920's. My grandmother is the daughter of Phillip Daniel Mann, middle son of Johann B. Mann JR.

Nan Curtis
bncurtis@Qnet.Com
Niteowl1060@Qnet.Com.

Hi Nan,

My wife is a Herkimer and her family is from that area. My last update on the Robert Herkimer family is dated 1977. They did a family reunion every year and a group of wives published a family record.

Bill Watson
watsontoo@mindspring.com
