Re: Hermann, Julius/Gottfriend / ND - Russia

My maternal Grandfather was Chris Herman, son of John and Christina (Fregien Hein) Herman. I believe John was the younger brother of Gottfried Herman. From what I can piece together, Gottfried came to the US in 1888 and lived in Ashley, ND with his wife Magdelena. John and Christina came to the US in 1894 on the SS Spree departing Bremen, Germany and arriving at New York. They settled in Ashley, Myrtle Township,ND as well. It appears Gottfried had a considerable amount of land, over 500 acres according to the 1911 property records. I think John Herman and his family probably worked with/or for his older brother Gottfried. The 1920 census shows that John was now living with Gottfried and Magdelena. It appears somewhere between approximately 1908 and 1910, he split with his wife and children.

I would love confirmation or correction if anyone has any information. Thanks.

Lou and I became friends when we were stationed together at Camp Pendleton and we shipped out to Vietnam in Feb. 1969...Lou went one way and I went another way but we knew the date we would be back in Danang to go home...being that I lived in Philadelphia we hit it off from the start...in fact I met Lou when I was looking for anyone with cigarettes and he offered me either a Lucky or a Camel, not sure which brand but that is how we met. I never knew of Lou's passing until I arrived in Danang to go home....I was looking all over the palce for him...I met some the guy's who came over with us and they told me about Lou..to Lou's family I want you to know that not a day goes by that I do not think of Lou. I have his picture over my fireplace and my wife and daughters are well aware of he is not was....I have been searching without any luck to find his final resting place so I may visit my good friend....Semper Fi Lou and we meet again......

Henri didn't immigrate to America as far as I know, but Jean Pierre, his son, is in Jackson County, Iowa. I noted JP's son made several trips to Cherbourg, France spaced over several years. I am thinking he went to France to visit Hermann--or Harmann--relatives. Would that be a port someone would have used to travel to Lorraine?

His father's name was Henri, and I think the name Harmann was Hermann in "the old country." Jean Pierre settled in an area of mostly German immigrants from Luxembourg. Does anyone have an inklink of who Jean Pierre Harmann was before he immigrated and who his parents were?

The Jacob I have was born 1854 and died 1921 and is buried in St. Philip and James Cemetery, Canal Fulton Ohio.
However there is a Johannes Herman (a brother of the Karl (Charles) Herrmann that is my gg grandfather). Johannes was born in Germany on 17 July 1822. If that fits contact me again. Names were Americanized so it is a bit hard to be sure about them or spelling.

Does anyone know anything of them? Names of HER Parents? Whether they are were Full HUNGARIAN, or part Austrian/part-Hungarian or whether just carried an Hungarian surname
but had inter-married w/Austrians down thru the ages, from way back? Just
curious, that's all!

Did Anna have any siblings????

Would love to exchange info/pix with related folk.
.Hi, my family intertwines with the Hermann family as well as the Fierstos family. I have pictures of some of the family that you speak of and some information about them, but they are cousins or siblings of my Hermann and Fierstos family. I will scan the picture for you when i can get my hands on it and send it to you if you wish. In answer to your query re: the German/French Alsace confusion, it depended on what country had possession of the Alsace region at the time as to what people had to declare themselves. You will see at some points in the census that it says they were French or German and then later dated census show the opposite as the younger generation would list their heritage as they felt the pride in. The Alsace/Lorraine peoples were forced to give up their heritage and join the service for the residing government at times against their own heritage. This is when alot of people fled the area to the US. It will take me awhile, but will get the information that I have on the Hermann's that you speak of. Jo McCallin Frank

With only my beginner status of ancestry research, I have found that adoption, immigration/naturalization records were all kept on a local level, so one would have to go to Ohio I presume to find the documents. I haven't checked on public libraries in the

If I weren't moving soon, I would hire someone from that area to do a records check.

I have checked some records in Germany (Baden Wurtenburg)but one needs to know the town/area the people lived, and this site was centered around "Black Forest" area of Germany.

I have no printable updated family history. I would be interested in your trace of nobility.

With the adoption it was very difficult to find things when I last really dug about 6 years ago. I did find several things that I did not have documented last night. George was born in Ohio, and I am not 100% on his father's name, since I have yet to find a birth record on him. I do have death certificates on Gertrude Fierstos, Joseph Fierstos and Joseph Hermann (brother of Gertrude). The father of Gertrude and Joseph Hermann is Frederick Herman shown as born in Germany, and Elizabeth Schweitzer shown as born in Germany. I have had no verifiable luck in finding anything else on them.

I do not have the family pictures that I have seen in my possession. I am trying to figure out which family member took them upon the death of my Grandparents. If I am able to locate I will scan most of them and attach any notes on the back of the pic's (which I believe is quite alot). I will let you know if I am sucessful in my mission.

Having a bootlegger on my side of the family would be ironic, as my husband's Grandfather ran shine. He never admitted making it, but did talk about running it with other relatives.

I will look forward to any additional information you find, and will let you know of anything I come across in my search.

Directly to your question, I know nothing yet, though I keep finding more all the time. I have no photographs of any of these people do you have them attached in your tree? I would enjoy seeing some.

The 1870 US Census of Joseph Fierstos, 28 yo, a French farmer in Jackson (Stark) Ohio has the correct spelling yet was transcribed as "Furstose" . He was the head of household with Martin, 30 yo Frenchman, also a Farmer. Then comes "Cathrine" also 30, from Prussia and she keeps house. The property is valued at $14,000.00 and personal property amounting to $1,234.00. But wait, there are more names: "Hellen (2), Mena (1 month); George (25) Caroline (22) and Philepene (19).

I am still confused about the "nephew" George. Is there a record of his birth? He was a 2 yo nephew in the 1880 US Census, in the 1900 US Census he is 21 and an adopted son. His mother was born in the US. This is the census with "Fierstos" spelled "Tresstos" To add a stick on the fire, the census recorded an 11 year old adopted daughter Irene. This is the first document I can find where Joseph went from Alsatian/French to German.

Do you have any idea how these children came to be adopted? George was 10 years older than Irene. I only remember my grandmother telling me the stories she had been told since marrying into the family. Did both George and Irene share the surname Hermann? Do you have an idea or remember anything about the adoption of either child?

I was two years old when G/Grandfather George Died, so nothing there. I do recall sitting in a car when my Grandfather would go to GGm Gertrude's door and walk his mother out to the car. For church, after church, I don't remember. Then everything becomes slightly gothic for me, remembering her house as cluttered with "things" even perhaps a black upright. We learned to bow, was that for her? Her funeral I can only remember black, every thing was black. As I recall, someone was late, hadn't made it, but people were hoping they would make it to the graveside service. Now it becomes bizarre, I recall them opening her coffin at the cemetery. Perhaps that was the imagination of a just 7 year old kid after going through all the church time leading up to and the day of the funeral.

Lastly, I am looking for a family connection to Joseph Fierstos who on Friday, November 30, was examinded before Commissionor Cleveland, upon the charge of illegal distilling. (Not sure which side of the family you are on, but this wouldn't be completely surprising) He was bound over to the next United States District Court in the sum of $500.00. On one side of my family we had 13th century Scottish nobility. I would find it most amusing to find I had a some bootlegger on the other side.

Thank you for the info, I'll keep you posted as to what I find next.

Gertrude Hermann Fierstos (born 1846 in Prussia per 1880 US Census) and her husband Joseph Fierstos (born 1843 in Frances per 1880 US Census) adopted Gertrude's nephew George A. (Hermann) Fierstos (11-15-1877 to 9-15-1960). George is buried in Falls Cemetery in Wabash, IN with his wife Frances M. (Wannemacher) Fierstos (3-28-1883 to 8-13-1965).

I believe they came to the US in 1860 or later. Gertrude told tales of hard times growing up in Alsace-Lorraine when she was in her early teens.

If my memory is correct, Gertrude and George's father was Jakob Hermann. Pictures I have seen mostly identify him as "Dad Hermann". Do you have any information on him?
