I know that name of two of these three children. The oldest seems to have been a girl named Minnie and the second was Walter, the baby I have no info on. Looks like David W. Hern went to Clark County, Dakota Territory and was living there in 1880, under the name P. W. Hern. I suspect someone typed the first initial wrong, but this is David W. Hern and son Walter. I have no idea where Margaret was living in 1880, but I suspect that she was living at that time; however I don't know that for sure.

You are incorrect. William Thompson (W.T. or Will) Hern was my grandfather. His only wife, my grandmother, was Sylvia Rogers. His only children were Florine, Billie Lowell [my father], and Majel. W.T.'s father was John Hern, and the only son. John had a brother, William, who never married. John was married to Nannie Bell Underwood. John's father was Thompson Ward Hern. He had brothers. I am the only son of Billie Lowell, who was the only son of William Thompson, who was the only son of John, who was the only son Of Thompson Ward to have children. He was born in 1820, so I am the last of a single line that stretches for almost 200 years, and I have no children. Hern I hope this information proves helpful to you.

The family story I was given is a bit different...and probably a bit embelished I'm sure. I mean, that is the Irishman's way isn't it? lol

I heard that the "O" was dropped from our name to avoid persecution yes, but the migration was made to escape family strife as well. Of course, this is all family hand-me-down story.

I really wish we Hern folk could collectively put the story together.

Our family research shows a Hern as being one of Cromwell's men and then settling into North Ireland. My direct ancestor came to Maryland before the revolution and owned a shipping line. The migrations states were Maryland to North Carolina, to Tennessee and down into Arkansas by the time of the civil war.

Hi! I am Julie (Stanish) Harris, eldest daughter of Shirley (Hern) & William (Bill) Stanish, Sr. We are CLEARLY related & have even possibly met each other at some point in the past. Had you attended Hern Family reunions in Zanesville? My folks attended every year, especially after they moved to Florida, until 2010, due to health issues. I had accompanied them several of the last 10 or so years. I understand that (my "great-) Aunt Fay is currently in a nursing home? We had spent extra time each summer and saw her the year she turned 100 years old! Sadly, her tremendous memory & wit had started to fade, so I was so grateful for the time we'd had together. I would LOVE to hear from you! Julie

Hello, I have a family partial tree that was given to me by your James Hern son Cecil's widow. Do you still live around Westville, there are a lot of Hern's there. If you go to Hern family and information page on facebook there are some documents there. The problem is that we believe John Hern was married to Spicy Stice his second wife, his first was named Mary. Spicy was married first to Benjamin Tune or Toon. I think William, Shelton and I forget the other sons name were Toons children. I'm not sure if that is correct or not. I'm right in the middle of moving and I have all my papers boxed up. If you want to e-mail me I have the family tree and some more documents I can e-mail you. vlzegrati@aol.com

I'm researching the Hern family. Sarah Wallace Hern is the sister of my James Lewis Hern b. 1877 in Going Snake District, Cherokee Nation, OK. Their father was William Hern b. 1831 in Boone County, MO. From this point it gets a little fuzzy. I have John Hern b. 1775 Va as their father, but I'm not really sure about this. The age difference is a bit much and I cannot document much else. There is also some question about the spelling of the last name. William Hern had his name spelled Herrin on one census, his brother Shelton spelled his name Hurren on the 1870 census.

Do you have additional information on this line? I've done DNA testing, but there is no other Hern out there with an exact match. I would suggest anyone researching this line of Hern's to do this to help determine additional information. I used FTDNA and 23andme. FTNDA has a larger database, I think.

I hope to hear from you soon. Please email me at ghern@att.net.

Thank you!

I think Thomas is correct about the name spelling. I've been looking for the parentage and marriage(s) for my John Hern b. 1775 in Virginia. He shows up on the 1850 census with sons, William b. 1831 Boone, MO, Shelton, and Henry.

William is on the 1870 census as a Herran and Shelton is on the 1870 census as a Hurren. I think the name could have been Heran. I saw another post of something looking for a Martha Hern/Heran, daughter of John ca. 1800 Va. This could be the same.

I would love to compare notes with anyone with more information.

I put that information under that surname project, but I have no confirmation of this. One of the reasons I did the dna test was to help pinpoint where this family originated, but until more people do dna tests, I am no closer to finding out than I was when I started. I do thing there may have been a spelling change, though. It could have been Heran or Herren. Both William and his brother Shelton have their names spelled Herran and Hurren on the 1870 census. I'm thinking of asking a professional for help now since this has gotten so difficult.

I am also looking for a John Hern of VA. My John Hern went to KY and can be found on the 1830 census in Todd County. He and his son, William Herbert Hern b. 1831 are ancestors of my son.

I think the mother of William Hern died in Ky and John remarried a Spicy Stice Toon in Arkansas around 1847. Her husband, Benjamin Toon, had also died on their way out west.

Since the census shows John to be born abt 1775, that's pretty old to have children born in 1831 like William and even later for his brothers, Shelton and Henry. My guess is that John had been married more than a couple of times to younger women.

Hello,

My family has some records of our Hern side coming from Farber, MO. I believe Clarence Clayton Hern and Martha Huff had several children in MO before moving to Kansas and then later homesteading during the land run in Oklahoma. Please feel free to look at my family tree to see if you can make any connection.

Regards,

Dan Hern

Marilyn, Here are a few entries in the Family Bible currently owned and in the possession of Belva Harris. She believes this was her grandfather Jeptha Harris' Bible.

Allen Hern and Sally his wife were married Feb 16, 1826
Milton J. Hern and Sernina Hern were married May 16, 1850
George W. Hern and Synana S. Evinett were married Oct 31, 1850
W.H. Harris and Elizabeth Hern were married July 10, 1851

There is more, mostly births. My sister copied this from the Bible at Belva's house a few years ago. I am also descended from Allen through Elizabeth who married William Harvey Harris, their son John Bolin Harris, his daughter Nancy Elizabeth Harris who married John William Chisham, Jr., his son William Lester "Sam" Chism, my father Lester Dale Chism.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you are interested in the rest. My email is Thresa.Chism@gmail.com

This Nicholas Green Berry Hern (Hearn) was my ggg-grandfather. He did marry a Smith in Crawford Co, GA but I think maybe this was one and the same Rebecca Ann Smith since the dates are one month different. The first record (Jul 1826) had his initials wrong as B.G. and I think when they went back to get it corrected (Aug 1826) to G.B. they re-entered her name as Ann at that point. He is listed in the 1850 Census in Russell Co, AL as Nickolus Hern with Ann and 9 children (the eighth one, Greenberry) was my gg-grandfather, Nicholas Greenberry (Boss) Hearn. I have further info on these if you'd like it.

I am tring to research the Hearn surname and just found out that some of the family may have spelled it Hern. My family is from the Mid-Ohio Valley area, in Washington County, Ohio. I know my Hearn family married the surname Francis and have found the Hearn Cemetery in Washington County off of County Road 9 where they are buried but I could not find their marker. I am guessing there is approx 100 markers but about half of them were just marked by a blank stone. I have different generation names and dates if anyone can help. I have a website with more information if you would like to visit, http://www.smokingbluegrass.com and my email address is john@smokingbluegrass.com I want to thank you for taking time to read this and I would be very thankful for any help.
