Hi,
I did my DNA through Ancestry.com and it put my ancestors origin on the French Spanish border in the Pyranees mountains.
My research put the name origin from Germany. Fernando was the name that came from Germany in the 12th century. The Z on the end of the name means son of. An S means daughter of.
I have lost my documentation for this.

So, If I don't know who my gr gr gr grandmother's father was should I consider those named fernandez in the area as well as hernandez? And I should safely assume that Italy is the correct birth place of her father if that is what is stated on the census?

Per this site: Hernandez Name MeaningSpanish (Hernández) and Jewish (Sephardic): patronymic from the personal name Hernando (see Fernando). This surname also became established in southern Italy, mainly in Naples and Palermo, since the period of Spanish dominance there, and as a result of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal at the end of the 15th century, many of whom moved to Italy.

I have also read the name was first found in Castille Spain. I have only traced my Hernandez line to Pinos Altos, Mexico. Going through that period in that location I am finding many immigrants...from Finland, Austria, China (of course), Germany, and Alemania.

I am quite interested in this as my gr gr gr grandmother was Frances Hernandez born about 1823 in Alabama. I am interested in the french connection because Frances disappears from the 1860 and 1870 census and a woman who I believe has a misspelled French name (Journey/Journe) has care of her children in a household three dwellings down from their father, John Neely, who is listed as living alone. However, by 1880 they are all reunited.
So, my questions are what is the french connection, is there an italian connection and how was the surname custom handled when the	man of spanish background married a woman from another country with different naming traditions?

Mobile, Alabama

My gr gr gr grandmother was Francis Hernandez. The 1880 census stated she was born in Alabama about 1823 and her father was born in Italy. However, the only Hernandez man I can find old enough to be her father is an E. Hernandez born about 1800 in Cuba. He is a cigar maker. The rest of the Hernandez males I can find are listed as from Spain and are oystermen in Mobile, Alabama. Isn't Hernandez primarly a Spanish Name? Was there a connection to the Journe/Journey family? Francis Hernandez married John Neely, a butcher, from Cincinnati Ohio. They are found in Mobile, AL by 1850. does anyone have a connection our a suggestion that could help me determine if E. Hernandez is her father or if I should continue looking? Also, if there is any reason why a woman of Latin ancestry would leave her children in the care of someone else for an extended period of time? Francis is not in the home for the 1860 and 1870 census. But returns for the 1880 census.

Ines Hernandez

Im looking for an Ines Hernandez that lived with her family in El Paso Texas in 1920. She lived with Estanislado and his wife Fernanda Hernandez And their children Manuel, Julia and Sara Hernandez at the time. According to Estanislados death certificate his parents were Andres and Camila Hernandez so I can only assume she could very well be Estanislados grandmother. I dont know much about her other than she was about 80 years of age in the 1920 census and sometime the rest of the family moved to Brawley California without her because she did not show up on the 1930 census. We believe she had died sometime between 1920 and 1925 because 1925 is about when the remainder of the family came to California. If anyone can help me find her final resting place or know how to go about getting to that point I greatly appreciate any help, Thanks....

I didn't know her family but in looking at online records the names of Luz's siblings came up as the same names you have listed below therefore, it would seem we are talking about the same people. Unfortunately, I am not in contact with anyone from my great-grandmother's side of the family but would be interested to see your connection.
Renee
