You are just the person for whom I have been searching to lead my way into Irish research. I notice you have referenced several sites which can be used for researching Irish ancesters. I have been trying to find a good one for several years. There are about 19,000 individuals on my chart, most being English. I always have to stop when I find anyone who came from Ireland. Both my husband and I have family originating from County Mayo, mine from the south, his fom the north and possibly County Waxford.
Paying for Ancestry.com is about all we can handle at the moment and the only Irish sites I have found are cost prohibitive. Could you please send me a list of free sites or who have nominal charges that you have used and found to be satisfactory and reasonably easy to use. I will forever be in your debt. Many thanks, Joan .......... chrlcrs@cox.net

Oh - sorry - thought they were in the US. I am no help England research. I did do a quick search on rootsireland.ie and did get one hit for a baptism between 1881-1883 for a John Hession with a father named John and a mother named Mary. You could check it out and see if it seems to work or lead you elsewhere. Just note - if you do pay to see it - the info is not always inclusive - more could be on the original (parents names etc..). Also - the Irish use the same names over and over and over - so it might not be your relative but then again - it might! I've had it go both ways. Best of luck!

The church records show his parents to be Mary (Marie) and John although this is in latin. His eldest son was John and his eldest daughter was Mary. Not sure were else to look, Janice.

Hi - my relatives are Hessions from Galway, Ireland. I don't show a John directly - but maybe a cousin? Don't know how much research you've done and where you've looked... Where were they married? I found the most helpful thing was the death cert - which can usually be ordered. Many times it has the parents names (including mom's maiden) and sometimes the birth town. Also a marriage cert has lots of good info. Again- can sometimes be located. Familysearch.org is a good site and it is free. If you have more detail rootsire is a good site - but very pricey!!! Most of my research has been in New York so if that is your area give me a shout and I might have some ideas. Good Luck!

Hi, Tom.

I'm not sure if you've found the information you've been seeking as I'm responding to an older post. Here's information that I was given by a family member who was doing research some time ago... I'm from the Thomas Tarpy line (John Michael's brother).

John Michael "Mike" Tarpy b. Feb 9, 1840 in Tuam. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1948 at the age of eight. Became a citizen on Nov 4, 1964 at age 24. Vouched for by Patrick Hanley as an outstanding citizen. Oral family history has him smuggled out of Ireland under a woman's skirt. Lived in PA from 1848 to ~1864. In 1872, he puyrchased 60 acres of farm land on Big Hurricane Creek in McEwen, Humphreys Co, TN.

John Michael's parents: John Tarpy and Bridget Hession

John Tarpy b. ~1800 in Annaghdown, County, Galway, Ireland. He married Bridget Hession Dec 19, 1823 in Annaghdown, County Galway, Ireland. She was born ~1800 in County Galway. Sources: Marriages in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tuam, Ireland, 1821-1829. Note: John Tarpy is the only land holder listed in Tuam during the years 1848-1864. Source: Griffiths Valuation.

Children of John Tarpy and Bridget Hession: Thomas Tarpy b. Mar 6, 1827, Ireland; d. May 2, 1913 in McEwen, TN and John Michael Tarpy.

John Tarpy may have had one brother, William Tarpy sinch they are the only Tarpy's listed in Griffins Valuation of Ireland in 1840s. William Tarpy b. ~1800; m. Bridget Craven, Nov 16 1823, Annaghdown, County Galway, Ireland.

My relative was unable to identify John Tarpy's parents and only left the following notes: The original Gaelic spelling of Tarpy is O'Tarpaigh; family roots in County Sligo.

All the best!

Hi - don't know if this helps - but Delia was a nickname for Bridget. I have a relative - Bridget Hession that was baptized in 1871. The Hessions of Ireland were mostly in Galway and Mayo counties. You could search the Irish civil records for Bridget or Delia born/baptized in 1866. There are several I can see - it would help if you had the name of her parents (maybe from the death cert?) to narrow down which record is hers. Good luck!

She married James O'Donnell at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsburgh, PA. James was born in Pittsburgh, PA.
I cannot find any more details on Delia--how she got here, why she came or if she came with any family. Bridget's brother lived in Minnesota so I am guessing that this Michael Hession did as well. He could be Thomas' brother but I can't find anything on him. In the reply it states that Michael Hession died circa 1851.

Thomas m 1st Bridget Calt 2nd Mary Connolly. This union produced 5 children, all born 1866 thru 1871, in Carrowmore, Mayo, Kilmaine, Kilcommon, Ballinrobe, Connaught.Ireland. (5 miles from Hollymount) Later all came to Fitchburgh, Massachusetts. NO MATCH BUT CLOSE (Wish I understood place names in Ireland.)

Thomas , son of Patrick Hession and Maria Brady.
Is there any mention of them in Barry's book ?? Or does anyone know of this couple ??

Denise

Hi Joan --

My great-grandfather was John J. Hession who was born in County Mayo on 25 Sep 1855 to Michael Hession and Bridget Murphy - and according to family stories they were living in Ballinrobe. I'm not sure what other children they had. I'm hoping to locate the family in Barry Hession's research so that I can confirm that.

Does this sound like it may be a fit with your Hessions?

Looking forward to your reply!

Patti Hayes

I read Marks new message just before I sat down to reply to your last message. I was writing to tell you that I think we may have a match and that I would like to compare notes. My research always turns up Hession's from Tuam whereas mine come from Hollymount, Ballinrobe, Mayo. I was also going to volunteer to help pay for the scanning into an electronic format if that is the decision made. This of course depends on there being a connection to my ancesters. I have just written pretty much this same message to Mark.

I have just read Pat Heyes message and was getting ready to respond when your last message showed up. I was writing to tell Pat that I think he and I may have a match and that I would like to compare notes with him. I was also going to volunteer to help pay for the scanning into an electronic format if that is the decision you make. This of course depends on there being a connection to my ancesters. I was wondering if your Mother is the person I corresponded with years ago. She told me she had records for the Hession's that her husband had compiled and that she would be in touch later when she had cleaned his office. A year or two later she wrote and said her mother and son were both ill and that she would contact me later. I neve hard from her again. I first posted a note on this board on 15 April 2008.

Now that i have located the book my Uncle Barry put together,I want to compare it to the one my Mom (Joan Hession)possesses and make sure they are one in the same.Trying to locate her copy is proving to be a little more difficult. If her copy is indeed the same as mine,I will try to scan it onto memory stick and see if I can reformat it to make it smaller.(hope my computer doesn't crash..lol)If successful I will be able to email it to whoever requests it.Note! My Mom explained to me that my Grandfather (Dr.Henry Arthur Hession)and Great Uncle (Captain John Hession who emigrated to the U.S.A.)would sometimes also use Hessian as their last name. Also I know where my Uncle Barry's widow (Joanne) lives, which is a couple of hours away and wonder how much original Hession documentation she has in her possession.

Hi Mark --

I'm so sorry to hear that your Uncles have passed. I believe my cousin Jim Hession reached out to your Uncle Barry about 10 years ago.

My father's mother was a Hession, and we've been able to trace the family back to Ballinrobe, Mayo.

I know that your Uncle Barry spent many years and tremendous effort painstakingly researching and cataloging the Hessions, and I'm sure he would love to see that work preserved and shared with future generations. If there is a way you can bring the book to a Kinko's or other reproduction service to be scanned into an electronic format, I would most certainly be willing to share in the cost of that effort. Depending upon the estimate, I might even be able to cover the cost.

Please contact me and let me know if you think this is feasible. Perhaps I could then assist in establishing a small webspace in honor of your Uncle Barry where other Hessions could come to benefit from his extensive research.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Pat Hayes

I believe anyone with the Hession name in their family records would be interested in seeing what Barry worked on for so long. At some point most of us heard he knew probably more about the Hession's in North America than anyone and that we should go to him for information. Except for asking you to check for names of Hession's we have confirmed as part of our family, I know no way for you to share the informaion you have with us. This would cause you do do a lot of work and tke a lot of your time. Should you be willing to do this Please let me know and I will send you my Hession names and the names of their family and be very greatful to you for any help you could give. You are great to have gone this far to help. Joan

Kate, I was just made aware or your message of 2008. I have no immediate leads but thought I might mention I have a HESSION line originating in Hollymount. They came to Massachusetts and settled. I have a Thomas HESSION b.abt 1804 who married an Ellen b. 1806, While Ellen is not the person you are hunting they may have had a daughter Ellen. The two sons I knowof are John b. 1825 arrived abt 1844, Thomas. b. 1835 arrived 1847. Both went first to Easton, Washington Co., N.Y. because that was where the jobs were, but I have a feeling Massachusetts was always their ultimate destination. Hope this gives you a better picture of the HESSIONS in Hollimount. It seeems there was a large family there. Should I find anything that I think might help I will contact you. HOpe you will do the sme for me. Joan

My Hessions live in Ballyglass. I saw the farm in 2001. Michael Hession, my great grandfather was born in Gardenfield, but we can't trace back any further. I wonder how more can be traced? Also I wonder how the Hessions made it through the famine. Michael married Eleanor Keaney and lived next door to her family headed by Thomas Keaney and his wife Judith Kilcoyne. Are the Hessions in Galway related? I also have O'Boyle relatives. My great uncle Thomas was an engineer who brought water to Claremorris.
Claremorris is a lovely town. There is a book about the church and another about Claremorris which you might want to purchase. You can also see a webcam on line.
Have fun in Ireland. Hope your research is very productive. Winnie

Joan, I certainly will keep you in mind if I find any Hession leads. The Ellen I am tracing was still in Ireland per the Irish 1901 census in place called Ballykinava. I recently looked at the 1901 UK census and noted there was a Mark Griffin therein - same age and birth place was Ireland. He was a boarder and working in Manchester. I wondered if he was Ellen Hession's husband Mark Griffin? If so he was listed on two different countries census same year. But then again in 1901 Ireland was still part of UK. I get the impression the folks I am trying to trace may have gone into UK VS America to get industrial work. So I wonder if you have connected to UK for any of your Hessions? Agree there was a large family of Hessions in Hollymount and my Ellen ancestor was there at some point. Thank you for your advice about the Mass Hessions. I will make note of it and see if I can find any links to them.
Kat

Hi Susan - My email address changed so I didn't see your reply. Forgive my late response. This is interesting -confused- but nevertheless interesting.
You see the ancestor I was tracing Ellen Hession had a son Anthony (my grandfather)and his daughter Catherine (my aunt) marred an Arthur McNally in Flatbush Brooklyn. Arthur had a brother (forget the name) who was never married, committed suicide. So this is an odd coincidence. Arthur McNally was born in USA - not an immigrant.

My Grandmother on my fathers side was Mary Elizabeth Hession born 3/2/1891 in Wilmington Delaware. She married my grandfather George Gibison in Wilmington in 1913. Her parents were Martin J. Hession and Rebecca Maxwell of wilmington also. Martin was born in 1867 in Wilmington and Rebecca was born in 10/1870. They were married in 9/12/1889. Martin was the son of Michael Hession and Mary Keating both born in Ireland. I believe Michael entered the U.S. through Philadelphia in the 1850's. I have found them living in Wilmington in the 1860 Census. The only other children of Michael and Mary that I am aware of are Margaret P. born 1860 died 1883 and John B.. I amd trying to figure where in Ireland they are from. I have found a Michael Hession in Lancashire England in 1851, but have not gone further. Hope this helps. Rick Gibison.

Dear Trish.

I have just started researching the Hession side of my family tree.
I have a Margaret Mary Hession who I beleive was born in or near Co.Mayo Ireland in 1850. She eventually married my Gt Grandad Charles Ephraim Burgess in Chelsea, London.
But I am interested in her family, father, mother etc to which I know nothing. So I would be very interested in any Hession info you may have.
My email address is clive.woodley@cevalogistics.com

Thank you

Kind Regards

Clive Woodley

I am interested in the List of Hessions, you have, who are buried at Cathedral Cemetery. My Grandmother was a Hession. Her Father was Martin Hession and her Grandfather was Michael Hession (born in Ireland). I knew there many Hessions buried there. My Dad and Uncle had a tombstone place at one of the plots where many were buried. You can send the information to my e-mail at richard.gibison@delmarva.com. Thank you in advance. Rick Gibison.

I have the Hisson name in my family tree as well, it's on my husbands side. The Hisson name in Ontario originates from African American slaves who escaped to Canada in the early and mid 1800's. Some census records have the original Hissons of Upper Canada as being born in Vermont.
Don't know if they're of any relation to your Julia Hisson, but from what I've noticed Hisson spelled this way is not very common,so you never know.
Good Luck,
Elizabeth
