You are right, Elspeth and Thomas Hoatson did not have a child together. Thomas Hoatson however did father an illegitimate child James Hutson who was born in Yarrow. I am a descendant of that child. When Thomas Hoatson became old Elspeth had returned to Dalkeith Palace and instigated a will which ensured the illegitimate child was cut out. She had by this time joined the Free Kirk Church which was very strict - especially re illegitimate children - which may explain why she did this. The child James got a young girl pregnant and they moved to Peebles where they later married. He was a Hedger and most of their children died young which tells us they were probably very poor.

Hi Amanda

It appears that Thomas Hewetson the Covenanter is part of my family. My grandmother Agnes Hewetson married William Hyslop Williamson - sadly William died in his thirties in Chicago.(They had one daughter Helen born in Council Bluff) Agnes later married Unknown Kirkwood either in America or back in the UK.
If you are interested I can send you more detailed info.
Thanks for all the rearching you have done - fascinating
All the best
Jane

The Thomas Hutson who m. Euphan Rutherford on 11 Dec 1774 at Old Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh, was Gamekeeper for the Duke of Buccleuch at Bowhill, Selkirk. Euphan, also known as Elspeth, died in 1838 and is buried in Selkirk with her husband, Thomas Hutson who d. in 1830. They made a post nuptial agreement in which it mentions there were no children so, unfortunately, he could not be your ancestor. Also buried with them is my ancestor, who was Euphan/Elspeth's sister.
Margaret, Qld. Australia

Hi there. My G G G G Grandfather Thomas Hutson (Hoatson, Hewetson) comes from the Dumresshire Area. He was born approx 1752 and later married Euphan Rutherford at Old Gray Friars Church in Edinburgh. Thomas was the Head Gamekeeper for the Duke of Buccleuch at Bowhill Estate (near Selkirk). I am wondering if he might be on your tree? Cheers, Linda Hutson, Perth, Western Australia

William & Elizabeth Hewetson, Maryport, England to Troon, Scotland

I'm stuck on William Hewetson/Hewitson/Hewatson with wife Elizabeth Wilson. First find them in Maryport, Cumberland, England with the births of most of their children, one child appears to have been born in Liverpool, then they moved to Troon, Dundonald, Scotland where the 3 daughters all married. With William being a ship master, seems likely they could easily move to any port they desired.

Elizabeth b. abt 1764 d. May 11, 1831, Troon, Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland
William Hewetson b. abt 1764 d. Jan 13, 1826 Troon, Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland.

4 children are alive at the time William wrote his will in 1825:
William b. unknown d. before 1825, had a son, William
Mary b. Abt. 1782 Maryport, Cumberland, England m. Henry Mourney
Joseph Wilson b. Apr 22, 1787 Maryport d. likely before 1825
Wilson b. Jun 27, 1788 Maryport
Elizabeth b. May 30, 1797 Maryport m. William Watson
Martha b. Dec 01, 1799 Maryport, d. likely before 1801
Jane b. Aug 14, 1802 Maryport, Cumberland, England
Martha b. abt 1801 Liverpool, Lancashire m. James Cowan

Am interested in William Hewetson and Elizabeth Wilson's background. Also what happened to the sons, Wilson and William. Any connections out there?
I have an interesting news article about this man. If you'd like a copy email me at KathiJud@aol.com

It says he studied medicine before coming to the United States, met Stephen F. Austin in Missouri and came with him to Texas in 1821. Mr. Hewetson lived in Coahuila Mexico for a few years then came back to Texas to stake a land grant. There are many more interesting details in the story.

I am not related - just a Texas history nut.

Kathi Tucker Judkins
