Don't know if you are still researching after all this time but my line has Agnes Porteous married to John Robert Hewitson (Jack). Jack was married 3 times: 1) Agnes Tanner 2) Agnes Porteous 3) Jenny Caldow.

For those interested in Marmaduke Hewitson's family, you can view my Ancestry family tree under Phillips/Street/Bates/Hewitson Family. Marmaduke only had one sister Elizabeth. Father/Mother was George Hewitson and Mary Hobson.

I'm looking for pictures, documents etc on this family.

I am a researcher for the Laramie Plains Museum in Laramie, Wyoming, USA. I am trying to determine the ancestry of Sarah Hewitson (often spelled Hewiston - incorrectly I believe). Baptized 1805 in England, probably Cumberland. Lived with husband Thomas Ivinson on River Estate St. Croix Danish West Indies. Found in 1841 census there with daughters Emma and Hannah. Also had sons Joshua, John, Edward and Thomas. One other daughter Frances Ellen. The four boys not listed 1841 census as believed to be in Cumberland in school at Croft House Academy in Brampton. Sarah probably died at sea with daughter Emma prior to 1846 St. Croix census (family oral history). May have had a brother or cousin (John Hewitson) also living in St. Croix as a joint property owner with Thomas Ivinson. No firm clues on name of mother or father, but there is a tenuous tie to Alexander Hewitson in Threlkeld Cumberland (married to Sarah Plaskett). Contact me at kdviner@msn.com

Further info:
William was born about 1838 in Castleton, according to census records. His mother died about the time he was born, so I am not sure if he was James ELLIOT's son or not. He was always known as William ELLIOT. His father's second wife, Ellen/Helen HOTSON/HEWITSON/HUDSON married James ELLIOT about that time. I wonder if he was born to her before her marriage to James ELLIOT. The other children of James ELLIOT had their birth recorded in Cumberland (living at Nether Oakshaw) or Newcastleton (James was a carter). There was a William HEWITSON born in Carlisle about 1838, but I think I have traced him to a later marriage, so he is not my William.
Is there anyone who can help solve this case of the missing birth records?

I am trying to find any further information on my grandparents and great great grandparents.

My grandmother was Gertrude Hewitson. She was married to John Stout in either Nenthead or Alston, England.
They immigrated to Welland, Ontario, Canada in the early 1900's with her husband John Stout and children George Stout and Nancy Adeline Stout.
My mother (daughter of Gertrude Hewitson) Clara was born in 1917 in Welland, Ontario, Canada.

Frederick Hewitson b. approx 1903

Help! I've accessed the 1911 census and found a Frederick Hewitson, born around 1903 (although the age isn't too clear on the document it looks like an 8), born in Long Marton, Westmorland. He is listed as the son of my gt grandparents and as such is a great uncle I have never known of and none of my relatives have heard of him either.

To compound matters I can't find a birth, marriage or death record for him to try to work out a little more.
If anyone knows of a Frederick Hewitson, or can even give me a bit of a steer as to how to find out any more that would be great (we've visited the records office in Kendal and haven't found anything on him there either...) Curioser and curioser! Many thanks for any replies - Rebecca

Hello I am researching my Hewitson ancestry and they originate from the areas mentioned before. If you have any information about any Hewitsons in that area that I may link into I'd be delighted to hear it. My Great Grandfather was Hugh Hewitson born 1859 at Kellah. His father was John Hewitson born 1827 at Knarsdale and I believe John's grandfather was John Hewitson born about 1752 at Haltwhistle and was a miller in the Lambley area. There are various spellings in the records.

it could be coincidence that George moved to Canada then onto Illinois where our ancestors left the UK in 1849 for - but it's possible George is a distant cousin of "my" Hewitson line.

If you know a bit more about when he was born, etc, we could look for a link that way?

My grandfathers name is George Hewitson from Northumberland county, England born turn of the 1900's. He migrated to Watford Ontario, Canada ( when?) and married Marion Roberts. My Grandfather George has a known brother named Edward. Unfortunatly, my father was very young when his father, George, died which was in 1952 and is unable to remember a whole lot. There would also be a Peggy in the Hewitson family that my father spoke to in the 50's if any of this sounds familiar....please let me know. Thank You.

Hi. I am sort of new to this sort of thing but.....
My grandfather's name is George Hewitson and was born in Northumberland County England. I do not know too much about him as he passed on when my father was 12, which would be in 1952. I know that he moved to Ontario, Canada ( where my dad was born) and after his death in '52, my grandmother moved the family to Aurora, Illinois area.
I can find out more if you think our families are connected.

I am 99.9% positive that Marmaduke did not have a sister Charlotte... only two children, Marmaduke and Elizabeth, both came across on boat with parents... Then there are 6 other siblings that are half-siblings... none Charlotte...

Can you share why you think there is a connection?... Always a thought I might have missed something...

I believe that I might be a descendant of Marmaduke's sister Charlotte (born Kendal, Westmorland 1799) . I have only just discovered this so have no other information about the Hewitson's other than the direct line from Charlotte to myself.
I'd be really interested to know what you have discovered.

i am related to catherine birkett steel b 1859 .she married john lehrle in headpool 1878.(his father was george jacob lehrle,who married 3 times-first to frances maria lawrence (john lehrles mother),then to deborah sherwin,and finally to maria braithewaite.)
catherine and john had 6 children,one of whom was frances lehrle b 1879.she in turn married james jackson in barrow,lancs.they had my grandmother eveline jackson,who married thomas huitson!!so do you reckon we are linked?!the birkett /braithwaiteand the hewitson/huitson seem too much of a coincidence

my great great grandfather was named braithwaite hewertson or hewitson, from langdale, my maiden name is hewertson he married alice scambler 1902 - 1972 they then lived nr blackpool and had seven children but i do not know any more than this about him, i'd appreciate it if you could get in touch. if your braithwaite is not the same he may be a father or cousin.
