I'm trying to find my 2nd great grandfather John or Jack Hewson. He was born in "England" March 9, 1959, according to his death certificate and the 1900 US census. According to family legend he stowed away on a ship from Liverpool when he was 14 years old (about 1873). Unfortunately, this account may have been passed down by his son, Glenn Clifford, who was a "colorful" storyteller. At any rate, he was in the US by 1890, when he was married. I have no information on his parents at all, except that hey were both born in "England" and I'm really looking for any info on him at all, 1890 or earlier, especially any that would tie him to the UK.

I did find one very compelling document. The birth certificate of one John Hughson born on March 10, 1959 in Shetland. However, this same individual is still living in Shetland in 1881, 8 years past when he supposedly left, and when you throw the variant spelling and birthplace I have to wonder if it's him at all.

Pete:

My immigrant Sims ancestor to America, Capt. Walter Sims (ca. 1765-Jan 1820) formerly of Great Britain, then Bucks Co., PA then Philadelphia, PA, drafted his last will and testament in 1819 just outside Nashville, TN on his farm there and left two codicils. The 2nd codicil was dated 01 Jan 1820, a week before his death. The 2nd codicil was witnessed by Dr. Boyd McNairy, Ann E. Hewson and a Robert Wood. Sims was married to Rebecca Green and Rebecca's sister Alice Green married William Hewson, and it appears the aforementioned Ann E. Hewson was also a relative of Sims' wife. I have information on the Greens and their maternal line, the Kollock family. Would like to know more about the Gordons, as a granddaughter of Boyd McNairy married a Gordon, residing in New Orleans many years.

Jim Sims, Fort Worth, TX

Jane Atkin of Gallowgate died 1 Feb 1812, buried 3 Feb 1812, age 31 daughter of Thomas Atkin, cordwainer, and his wife Mary late Kidman

Janis

I believe that David Atkin HEWSON married Mary Elizabeth SIMPSON on 30 September 1844 at Gateshead. They had at least 6 children between 1849-1862.

I have found the family on the 1851, 8161 and 1871 censuses.

David died about April/June 1879 in Gateshead, Mary Elizabeth between 1861 and 1871.

I have not found any link, yet, between this HEWSON family and my own.

I have no idea why this question went to the Hewson board all of a sudden. Get more info as many of us just answer questions related by county rather than a specific name.

Was David trained as a painter or something similar? Who did he marry? What was the father's occupation?

Janis

I'm interested to trace my maternal line and have got back to my great-great-great grandmother, Sarah Hewson who was married to William Hewson, a watch repairer, lived on Lincoln High Street, and had a daughter, also Sarah Hewson, who at 19 was a milliner. Wondering about their history further back - Danes, Vikings ? I read there was a Viking strong-hold in the southern Lincolnshire Wolds, which may be the origins of my maternal line as I've come across some village names from this area in the records.
Anyone able to offer further clues or advice. I guess I should get a copy of Sarah Hewson (daughter) and George Wileman's marriage certificate, as this is fairly sure ground.

Two more cousins also followed later they were twin brothers of my husband's grandmother. Tom and Fred Prestwood. They were all born in and around North Thoresby, Covenham area of Lincolnshire. Have you any connections with this Hewson. I have been able to trace relatives of Fred and John Presswood.

Re: Thomas Hewson of Hull, E Yorkshire

Hi there - yes I can help.

Thomas Hewson (b;1810 d;1895) married Ann Bowes (b: 1812 d: 1860) in Dec 1831. Children were; Edwin 1835 – 1895 / Thomas 1838 - / Charles 1840 – 1900 / Frederick 1841 - / Septimus 1844 / Emily 1848 / Clara 1849

My family is related to Charles Hewson.

At the time of his birth, Charles and the family lived at ‘7 North Church Side’ in Hull, a block from the Holy Trinity Church where “thousands of Hewson’s had been and would continue to be married”. It appears that Thomas had been the sexton of the Holy Trinity Church since the late 1830's.

By 1851 the eldest son Edwin has left home and working as an apprentice draper but the other 6 children still live at home at 7 North Church Side.

Father, Thomas is still listed as employed as a ‘Sexton’ and from the 1861 Census, it confirms he was employed at the ‘Holy Trinity Church’.

By 1861 his sister-in-law Rachel is employed as house keeper at 7 North Church Side after the death of his wife Ann in September 1860.

At the 1871 Census, Thomas Hewson had travelled to Croydon, London and was in attendance at the Masonic Institute for what period it is unknown but it appears he may have at some time joined the Masons perhaps after the death of his wife?

I can not confirm at the moment how long he was a freemason. An interesting combination with his occupation !

With regards to Thomas's parents, from his Baptism record his parents are listed as William Hewson (b; 1790 d; abt 1852) and Phoebe (unknown) (b 1793 d; ??)

Am still working on these two.

Trust this assists ?

In case you wish to continue corresponding, am on edwards_auckland@xtra.co.nz

cheers

Simon Edwards

Private Kirby HEWSON, KIA Ypres 1915.

Kirby HEWSON is commemorated on the War Memorial in Thurlstone, South Yorkshire (formerly in the West Riding) England. He is also commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres. According to CWGC he was in 7th Bn British Columbian Regiment. The local paper in reporting his death states that he was 'formerly of Millhouse Green, Thurlstone.' I can't find him there in the 1911 census so presume he had already emigrated to Canada. Can anyone please supply family details.
Richard.

Hi David,
My tie to Buckingham is on my father's side, surname Goodwin. They were United Empire Loyalists who settled in Buckingham after they left the USA, so they had been in Buckingham for many years before my great-grandparents met and married. My great-grandfather married Susan Hewson in the late 1800's. They later left Buckingham for Nelson, BC. Being that Buckingham is/was so tiny a town I would imagine that there would be some connection to our Hewson's. Susannah could have been an aunt perhaps? I don't know if you have been to Buckingham, but it is still a very tiny town. Going through one of the cemetaries there in 2000 I did come across a headstone of a male Hewson who passed in the 1980's. So it seems not all of the Hewson's left the area.....

canuckgirl :o)

Hiya Stephanie

Thank you for replying to my thread. I hoped if I persevered someone would contact me. We are indeed second cousins but Lesley and I didnt know anything about Aunt Lizzie and George until I started our family tree about a year ago when our Mum passed away. Our family is huge on Dads side and I am finding cousins etc we never knew existed or havent seen for tens of years.

We are so pleased to hear from you and so exited. Dad had 12 siblings, he was the baby so there is lots to tell you. If you email me on the following address I can then send you my private email through that. It is hippygoeswest@hotmail.co.uk. We can then talk privately and catch up.

I look forward very much to hearing from you and give a big thanks to your Son for finding the post I sent.

Love and best wishes to you and your family

Mandy and Lesley x

Hello, Mandy and Leslie

It would seem that the two of you are my second cousins, since we share great-grandparents.

My father Roy Hewson died in 1963, so he wasn't one of your visitors, and I have only sisters.

Sorry it took me so long to get in touch.
Hi have been trying to contact Stephanie for ages but to no avail. If anyone does read this please pass on our message and ask her to get in touch. My sister and I are related to her and would love to get in touch about our family tree.
Hoping someone out there sees this and passes on our wish.
thank you in advance.
