List of 39 German HICKMAN families to America

All,

I have compiled a list of 39 possible German HICKMAN families that came to America during the 1700s. 4 of the 39 have had their DNA tested, proving as many as 10 (of 39) family relationships. Please view this list on my website: http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/home/heckmans... and download the Excel spreadsheet, if you like. Please forward any info that you may have on these 39 families - my next step is to add web pages for each of them.

Thanks,
Jeff Heckman
jheckman@frontiernet.net

DNA proves Joh(a)n Peter HICKMAN was a Rothenberg HECKMANN

John Peter HICKMAN's parentage had been a bit of amystery: while many believed he was born to Johann Adam and Anna Elisabeth(a) Lenner Heckmann in Rothenberg im Odenwald, Hessen, Germany ~1740, there are no records of his birth there - or of his journey to America. In the late 1700's, he left Berks County PA for VA, and later Sullivan County TN. A husband to four wives (he outlived all but the last), his descendants were numerous - and they blanketed the South and Midwest. A distant cousin of mine in Austin, TX has written the most comprehensive book to date on the John Peter HICKMAN family line: "Wolfe and Hickman of East Tennessee". Dr. Trimble donated his book to the Brigham Young University Library, and so it can be downloaded online for free: http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/F... [The file is huge, and it will take a while to download...] Another distant HICKMAN cousin in Austin had his DNA tested, and his DNA matched mine 100% (for the markers he had tested)... so we have proven once and for all that John Peter HICKMAN is in my HECKMAN family line! DNA test prices recently decreased by 10% or more, so give it a thought if you'd like to prove your family relationships once and for all! Thanks, Jeff Heckman jheckman@frontiernet.net http://sites.google.com/site/heckmanfamilysite/

yes, the family legend of being descended from a Cherokee grandmother continues to haunt us to this day. I say haunt because NEVER are any of the cousins, now for years, been able to come up with proof. My great grandmother was Salina Emilie Hyden Hickman, born1858. From her came the family history of her full bloodied grandmother Caldonia. We have searched and researched and have our own trail of tears from coming up shorthanded ,with only passed down stories to keep us looking. Please share hope....

Lenora Lane was Married to Lemuel Dirkson Hickman. Lem was born in Maryland in 1857 and died in Lucas County Iowa in 1923. Children of Lem and Nora or Lenora Lanetta Lane were:
William, Frank, Zella, Gertrude, Glen and Leta. Glen was my Grandfather.

If you have any other info on this family please let me know...

Leonora Lane
as told to Billy Offenburger

This story was told to me by a wonderful Indian lady – Nora Hickman.

At that time I was around 17 or 18 years old. Now I am 95. At that time “Nora” (her white man’s name as she always said) was old. I don’t know how old. She was a Sioux, a member of a small band, she thought maybe 75 or 80, which like a lot of other bands roamed the plains hunting and fishing.

The big chiefs of the Sioux were Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, but she never saw them, just heard the grown ups talk about them. Sometimes a chief called Black Kettle came to visit them. She found out years later that Black Kettle was a Cherokee. Black Kettle was not black, he was the color of any other Indian. He got his name from a black iron cooking pot he had gotten from somewhere, and when there were no cooking utensils among the Indians of any kind, an iron kettle to cook the deer meat in was really a thing to make a man famous.

Now Nora didn’t know how old she was, she thought about 6 or 7 years old, when trouble came to their little band. Most of the men had gone on a buffalo hunt and would be gone for maybe 3 or 4 weeks. Sometimes it took several days to find a heard. There weren’t many people left in the camp, just women, kids and a few old men.

Then one day the “pony soldiers” as she called the U.S. Seventh Cavalry, rode up. They were very friendly, rode around through camp, looked in the tents, asked questions, found out the men had left a couple of days before on a buffalo hunt, and rode away.

That evening Nora’s mother told Nora, “You can’t trust the “pony soldiers”, they talk with a forked tongue, we will take our blankets and your little pony and go to the river and hide in the bushes.” And that is what they did.

The next morning at day break they were awakened by heavy gunfire. The “pony soldiers” had returned and were riding among the tents. As the Indians ran out of the tents, they shot them down, women, kids, old men and even the dogs. Then they set the tents on fire, burned everything, then they rode away from that field of death, leaving their victims lay where they fell. It being August and hot, they knew the coyotes and wolves and buzzards wouldn’t leave a trace of what happened in 3-4 days.

Then Nora and her mother began the long trek. They didn’t know where they were or where to go. Her mother said “We will follow the river. We will have water and it will rake us somewhere” so they followed the river. Sometimes they would find little shallow places where there were minnows they could scoop out with their hands – they didn’t have any way to cook them, so they ate them raw. Sometimes they would catch a frog and if they couldn’t get a frog or minnows, they ate grasshoppers.

So for days they followed the river. They lost track of the days. How many? Nora had no idea. Then the pony which they had been taking turns riding got loose one night and wandered away. They never saw it again. They were afoot, nothing but the endless prairie, no roads, no trails, no people, nothing.

Then disaster struck. Nora’s mother got sick, and sicker, and then died. So Nora was alone. Did she give up? She did not, she had a will of iron. She kept going. Then the river bank got real brushy, and she had to walk farther out from it to where the prairie was better walking. Then one day a man and his wife came along driving a spring wagon. Nora thinks they were Quakers. No one but Quakers could travel in Indian country, because the Indians trusted them.

When they met anyone, which was very seldom, Nora would lay down in the wagon and they would cover her up with blankets and hide her. It was open season on the Indians in the West. Nora said if the Quakers hadn’t found her, she would have died. She was almost starved to death, just skin and bones.

They got to St. Joe, crossed over to Missouri, from then on it was better. They did not have to hide her then. They traveled up into Iowa. They came to a little tribe of Indians who wanted Nora to stay with them. Nora wanted to stay too, so her friends left her there. After 2-3 years, these Indians moved on and Nora went to live with some white people.

When she grew up, she married a white man, Lemuel D. Hickman, everyone called him Lem.

Nora said she wonders if Custer and his pony soldiers didn’t get a pay back for the way they killed her people. Who knows?

This is the story as was told me by the person who lived it. I think it was true. She was Mabel’s grandmother and I know she spoke the truth. It has been 74 or 75 years since Nora told me this, if I had only written it down then. She told me a lot more, how they lived, the terrible cold winters, food scarce and the tents were cold. She called them teepees.

Notes from Bill Offenbunken:

Grandma Nora Lane Hickman, white father was Henry Lane. Kate Frazier grew up with her, they were the same age, the age on the birth certificate is not correct.

Information as told to Billy Offenburger:

Wanda Mae Hickman Offenburger said Nora was Navajo or Sioux from Kentucky

Cleo Oxenrider told me that Uncle Glenn Hickman told him Nora told him that she was full blood Indian, the tribe she was part of was all killed at their camp except her and Mother by U. S. soldiers. She and her mother keep hid in the brush and traveled by night eating whatever they could find. Her mother got shor and finally died. She was only 3 or 4 years old. Some people came up on her and gave her a ride and came through St. Jo., Missouri and came up through Iowa and the Henry Lane family took her and raised her.

Henry Lane, (Grandma Nora Hickman’s Father), was half blood Indian. His mother was full blood Sioux or Sac Indian. He served in the cavalry in the Civil War as a scout because he was such a good rider. Donald Turner said his family called him “Wild Henry Lane”.
I'm a descendant from Frances Hickman (b.1630) & Elizabeth Woolston/Chamberlin. My aunt's journel "Grandpop was a Quaker" has them arriving in PA before 1685, the date of his will. The linage is: Benjamin b. 1677 (record shows in Chester, PA) m. Ann Buffington--Francis b. 1708---Thomas b. 1743 Philadelphia---James b. 1776---his daughter Hannah b. 1806 m. Ed Peirson & they are my great great grandparents. According to my aunt after Frances died the family moved to Thornbury Township. Records I have show that my Hickman relatives lived in the Chester & Delaware Counties of PA,(Thornbury, WestTown, Concord) This could be considered the "Oxford region". Check out my tree Kercher, Hewston, Sagers, Peirson. My e-mail is rkercher @mac.com. Dot

Re: HICKMAN's Tasmania, Australia

I don't know if you are still looking for Henry Hickman or not. I was following a different family, and I think I came across him in Melbourne.

Henry Hickman, age 23 who arrived on the barque Madison in December 1852. The barque Madison, with captain Ross, had left New York on August 5, 1852 for the Gold rush. Most of the people who left New York were actually from Canada, so it is possible that Henry Hickman was in Canada first, check the 1852 census. Or i NY, check 1850 census.

Henry Hickman, now age 24, left Melbourne in December 1853 to Hobbardton (Tasmania) on the ship Tasmania II

The shipping list are in the Melbourne Office. PROV. They have a very good free index online.

Anyway, it looks like Henry Hickman went to the Gold Rush, but left it after 1 year to go to Tasmanai, wher he got married to Fanny Freeland.

I am not connected to this family. I was following an American Henry Hickman, but mine came back to Canada, where he married and died.

Hi
I am having some issues with the Hickman's at the moment. Firstly the parents of Patrick Hickman and Catherine Gleeson may or may not be the parents of my Hickman (as there is a clash with another Hickman family with same names, slightly different dates who moved to the USA in the 1850's and almost certainly come from the names mentioned.... and while we are probably linked I can't go any further back that my Michael Hickman born about 1834 Co Clare with any certainty. It is incredibly frustrating!

So I am sort of at a dead end, unless the records from County Clare become available online like most other counties!!! Hickman is not common and they are probably related SOMEHOW! but the question as to how is the the problem!!
Claire

I have some Molony's in my tree but for me they are related to Michael Hickman's wife Margaret Shaughnessy, Her brother Francis married a Mary Molony and had children in the Sixmilebridge area before heading over the the USA (and I have contacted a descendent of them).

I am guessing these families and lines are all intertwined but it is a matter of untangling them and finding who belongs to who and finding someone who may have some more family history to help.
Thanks Jim!
yes,I've seen Griffith's. The picture was great!
According to Thomas Hickman's death certificate in 1903,
his father was John and mother Mary Mahoney.
This is my only source, and I have not ruled out errors, since this information is only as good as the survivors' recollections. Mahoney/Maloney; who knows.
In the 1880's when his brother Michael died, the death certificate only asked for parents' birthplaces (Ireland). Their names were not asked for or recorded.
Thank you. Tom sands2@frontiernet.net
There is a John Hickman listed for the Hickmans in Castlecrine in Griffiths Valuation.
This was done in 1852.

The map and some details on the holding can be seen here (I am sure you have already see this). The location of the house on the Griffiths maps is marked exactly where the ruins I have seen are located.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a...

The ruins can be seen at

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&amp...

This is not very clear - was taken in the middle of summer so lots of ivy etc around. I live nearby so could try to get a clearer photo if it was of any interest to you.

There is a Mary and a Michael Hickman listed in the 1901 census in Castlecrine, presumably a son and daughter in law of the John Hickman mentioned above.
Both are also listed in the 1911 census but they did not have a family at that stage - both were 40 and married 11 years in the 1911 census - but from what I gather from this thread, he is your ancestor and so they must have had a family after this.

I also noticed that somewhere in this thread someone was inquiring about Moloneys in Castlecrine. There were two families of Moloneys, both within 100meters of where the Hickman house was. One of the Moloneys is still alove - although is his mid 90's now.
This is interesting. There must be two, probably related Hickman families in the area, with people with similar names born in the same area.

The information I have is that my Hickman's were landowners and and my Michael Hickman died as a young man (in his 30's) leaving 4 daughters who all moved to New Zealand and his wife Margaret Shaughessy remarried a Murphy shortly after and had 3 children around the Kilkishen area.

I know I have Michael, John and Patrick Hickman to Patrick Hickman and Catherine Gleason, although I have been thinking there may be a couple of issues. I am not sure if we knew the parents of Michael or that a family member in the 1980's doing research in Ireland got the wrong parents as there is a clash with my Michael and a Michael who went to the USA to these parents (different Michael and dates but same parents). Someone may have the wrong parents and have attached them to Patrick and Catherine.

I am pretty certain my Hickmans stayed in Ireland and the records show they lived in the area we think they did after the 1850's when the other lot moved to the USA. We do have some family stories which all seem to work with the information and records. My G Grandmother and 2 sisters left in 1879 and another sister left a few years later.

Anyway they did seem to live in Snatha and its good to know this place exists!!
