Dr. Emmet Starr incorrectly wrote that Nathan Hicks, a white trader, was married to Nancy Broom. In fact, Nancy (daughter of Chief Broom of Broom Town) was the principal wife of Nathan's son Charles Renatus Hicks (ca. 1765-1827). Nancy's brother, Capt. Broom, was said to be a brother-in-law of Charles R. Hicks by the Moravian missionaries. Capt. Broom perished en route during the Cherokee Removal (misnamed "Trail of Tears") in the winter of 1838/1839.
