I am looking for a Mildred Hicks born about 1922-24...Was involved in the WAC during WWII until 1948 when she had a girl who she put up for adoption after 6 months. Possible that Hicks was not her maiden name or maybe it was...the father is listed as a Walter James Hicks...Mildred (Esther) Hicks had her birth daughter in Comanche, TX on May 14th, 1948. Does any of this match up?

Re: INFO ON ROBERT HICKS MARRIED BERNICE HOSKINS

I am Carlo Hicks great granddaughter. I found Jesse Hicks and Mintie Loovins Marriage License (I know it's them although there's many many spelling variations of Minnie's name and Jesse even shows up as Hicky J Hicks in the 1920 census, I will use Minnie for the rest since that's what's on her tombstone) The marriage certificate is for 22 October 1899 in the city of Hensley in Clay County of Kentucky. I found Jesse and Minnie in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census all in Sturgeon, Jackson, Kentucky. I was able to find them by looking up Mintie Hicks since Jesse's name changes but in 1920 she's listed as Menty Hicks. I was going off of these for their children and knew Jesse had to have been married before since in 1900 his daughter Martha is listed as 14 and Mintie is listed as 18 but I had no idea who his first wife was.
Well yesterday I found this great website http://www.thecarls.com/index.html and it has the full list of descendants of Jesse C. Hicks Sr. and Jr. There's even some photos and a map of the cemetery where the Hicks are buried.
I also found some pictures at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=55...

According to the descendants of Jesse C. Hicks Sr. document you can find at the Carl Family Website -
Jesse C. Hicks was born 1824 in Ga. He married Mary Curtis 1848 in Laurel county, Kentucky. They had James Hicks and William H. Hicks born September 14, 1854. Then Jesse married Matilda Rose in 1859. She was born 1827 in South Carolina.
Jesse and Matilda had the following children:
Theophalus Hicks born July 14, 1861 married Millie Catherine Neeley February 16, 1880
Jesse Casswell Hicks born July 14, 1863, died July 19, 1943 in Jackson co. Kentucky
William Franklin Hicks born 1864 married Nancy Cottrell
John Allen Hicks born 1867

Jesse Casswell Hicks (Jesse C) was born July 14, 1863, and died July 19, 1943 in Jackson Co. Kentucky. He first married Elizabeth Jane Cottrell May 10, 1879 in Jackson Co. Kentucky, daughter of Washington Cottrell and Nancy Hornsby. She was born in 1860 in Clay Co. Kentucky and died in 1898 in Jackson Co. Kentucky. Then Jesse married Minnie Lovins October 22,1898. She was born October 18, 1876 and died August 10, 1973.

Children of Jesse Hicks and Elizabeth Cottrell:
Rosan Hicks born 1879 Laurel Co.
While doing some research I found the name Horatio used in connection with Raymond's wife and son born in 1910. I also found reference to the name Ratio with wife and all children to this couple. This is my wife's grandfather and she does not know where the name Horatio or Ratio came from. Can anyone give me any input? Thanks.

I am looking for a William M. Hicks from Missouri, born in 1832. His father was possibly in Pennsylvania.
William then came out west to Oregon and or California and lived in Klamath County in Oregon. He had a son named Shakespeare Hicks, his mother was known as Kate. Kate later married John Smiley, a Klamath Indian. William may have married another Indian woman named Celia Hicks in the late 1800's.
Please reply if you would have any information on my ancestors., Thank You

I am very intrigued by the Wolf clan line. My son who is the last of his male line, is decended from Awee Wolf (which I believe her first name is just an English derivative of the Cherokee Indian spelling/pronounciation of Wolf) but I cannot find anything real about her lineage such as proof of father a guess is a Cherokee who adopted the English name Philip Wolf born approx 1770 in Cherokee Nation but I am not sure & mother possibly Annie Sourjohn which I can't find much on her either. I would be interested in finding out how you were able to trace so far back, hoping that I may be able to follow some of the same raods to get answers on where Awee really came from & if she is of the original Wolf clan such as everyone thinks...

One thing of note I have stumbled across is that out of the seven original tribes of the Cherokee, one is called Wild Potato so the title given to one of your relatives was distinguishing her tribe & may have been still part of her name where you noted the aka.

I would appreciate any tips you may have for me to help solidify my son's Cherokee history since he is the last of his line...

Many thanks,

Christina (daughter of LindaJae22)

Georgia Hicks:
Savannah Gibbs Hicks was married to Tom Hicks. Children: Kelis "Pete", Don, Shirley, Lee, Kathleen, and there seems like there is one more. My grandmother was Kathleen Hicks Smith. Shirley passed away yesterday May 1, 2012. The only living child is Lee (female). All lived or lives in the North Georgia area. There is a annual Hicks Family Reunion the first Sunday in December. Maybe this is the same family you are looking for.

I am trying to collect better information on my direct descendant Frederick Hicks. He lived in Powhatan Co, VA. He died in April of 1850. I believe he changed his name from Hix to Hicks before he became a father to William Hicks. I believe Frederick's father may have been Stephen Hix, son of Archibald Hix. The record is extremely sketchy, especially for a novice so I have little to no information on either. If you have any information on the Hicks line from Powhatan County VA and would like to collaborate, please let me know. I have been stuck here for a long time and would like very much to proceed forward.

Looking for a Mildred Esther Watkins who supposedly married a James Walter Hicks in Comanche, TX and in 1947 (May 14th) had a baby girl named Barbara Ann HICKS and gave her up for adoption later that same year. Any information would be much appreciated! My email is atbaldwin@me.com
My cousin, Patty and I are trying to connect with our Hicks relatives...My grandfather Floyd Alvin Hicks born in 1907 in Iowa..He disappeared from his family when my mother was about 5 years old, I think I remember her saying...I do know he was still with them in the 1940 census in which they lived at 6133 Lincoln St in Detroit but not long after that he was gone...I Have heard rumor that he went to prison and also read online that he went to prison for many years but it didn't say where or what his crime was...It seems like it has been a big secret all these years and we are determined to learn why. My mother and aunt who both passed on in the 90s never said much about him other than "he was a bad man" still he was grandpa and I want info and even photos of him and to know kin from that portion of my family tree.

David Alvin Hicks 1880-1939 was his father and his mother was Vernia Bolten Hicks 1879-1948..I noticed that his brothers, Vernon and Harold and their mother, Vernia lived and died here in the Detroit area where I have lived all my life.

I am researching for a friend of mine, she was adopted, born May 14th, 1947 and at 4 and 1/2 months old she was put up for adoption. She was born in Texas, her birth name was Barbara Ann Hicks. Her mother's name was supposedly Mildred Watkins or Mildred Hicks (Born in Maryland in 1924) who went to stay with her grandparents who lived in Texas to have the baby. She was enrolled in WAC (Women's Army Core) in Roanoke, VA...Barbara's birthfather's name was Walter James Hicks, said to be a student engineer living in Minneapolis, MN...It was an open yet still considered to be private adoption. Barbara was born in Comanche, Texas I believe 5/14/1947.

His line is through Lorenzo D.[b. 1828], his son Lewis G., his daughter Rosa Bell. I know his Hicks families were all over that area. Will share any info with you. Barb Kelley

WV hicks & looking for records

Try the WV state archives online. It has births, Marriages, deaths on the site of the different counties. If the info wasn't officially given to the court house in that county, it won't be there. When we were going on a cruise, my husband sent to the county court house & there was no record. Then we sent to the state & they had no record. Thankfully his mother was still alive & he had his service record & school records so he was able to file for a delayed birth certificate. If they were born before that county was formed, the records will be in the old county. Also, keep in mind that the further back in time you go that these peoople didn't read or write so it was spelled the way it sounded to the person writing it down. I've found the families listed as Hicks, Hix, Hickes. Most didn't need a birth record unless they filed for Social Security or a Social Security card to work. Happy hunting

I'm not sure how much she may have known. I'm thinking probably not much past John and Catherine, if that much. I suppose if you went by naming patterns, the father of John Hicks could be William Hicks as his first son was named William I do vaguely recall. That isn't a given or proof though but could be something to keep in the back of the brain while searching. I have had much more success with the Estep line than the Hicks line.

I realize this has been posted back in 2000, but I have just come across it trying to find the parents of John Richard Hicks. I cannot find any information on him. He is my great great grandfather, great grandfather Joseph Nelson Hicks and grandfather Reuben Milo Hicks. If anyone could give me any information on him I would greatly appreciate it.

jernansmith@sbcglobal.net

I don't think that Henry Hicks who was born in 1840 qualifies for the role of father of John Richard Hicks, at least my John Richard Hicks as mine was born in 1814.

Linda Reed
saintlinda@aol.com
