James Higgs -- Allen County Ohio 1830s

I am looking for information about a James Higgs who lived in Bath Township, Allen County Ohio during the middle 1830s. He owned a farm (section 17, 80 acres), and obtained a $400 mortgage on the farm which was released in 1839. On the lien filing his wife is listed as "Cynthianna." He is listed as an 1834 taxpayer in the township, and appears to be on the 1830 census, although the spelling is somewhat bizarre. I am studying mortgage lending in rural Ohio during the period, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help me track down James -- where did he come from and where did he go? Thanks!

Looking for an Estate document or Will of Zachariah Higgs from possibly Granville County, North Carolina. I need a document that would prove his children, and list their names. My link to Zachariah Higgs is Mary Ann Juliet Higgs whom married Richard Pollard Thomason, Jr. Some of the other children are Cassandra, Kenelm, John, Sothoron, etc. If anyone has the book and page of the Will or any other document that would help me prove my lineage. I need the help. Thanks, Bryan

Re: HIGGS FAMILY

Hi SassyLady,
Yes, we have a very active family association that researches both our Higgs and Tucker ancestors from Bermuda. From their responses both Peggy Higgs Biggler and sunrun3896 are also members of the same family (there are 2,000+ descendants of my great grandparents Ruth Yeaton Tucker and Joseph Mallaby Higgs and it is hard to keep them all straight).

We do come from St. Georges, Bermuda, probably arriving there between 1612 and 1616. Good records for the family only go back to around 1700, however. I am still missing at least one generation of tying the family to Thomas Higgs, a gunner documented to have been at Fort Paget in Bermuda by 1616.

By 1700, however, there were several distinct Higgs families living in St. Georges and it is not at all clear how they were related to one another if at all. For one take on the relationships among them let me refer you to a third party web page:

http://members.optushome.com.au/elyard/gen_higgs_bm.htm

The Jeremiah who heads the first family listed is the Jeremiah in your family tree here. If you go to the last entries in that first tree you will see a record of two of his daughters, Ruth and Mary, marrying Joseph and Benjamin Fox in 1784 and 1788 respectively. Unfortunately no further information is presented on them.

Are we related to the Jeremiah Higgs line? I don't know, although by the late 1930s descendants of that line were maintaining that we were not related. That may be partly due to the fact that we were Roman Catholic in that period and they had been Anglicans converted to Baptists. I don't think any compelling evidence exists one way or another.

I have a little further information about the later generations of the Jeremiah Higgs line but really not much. I will attempt to answer other questions if you have them, but I hope the information above will be of some use in the meantime.

Are you Sassy Lady on the 23andme DNA site, by the way?

Good Hunting!
Bill Higgs

Thanks for your quick response Bill.
Thank you for the website. I ran across it earlier today, prior to searching on ancestry. Ruth married a Joseph Fox, their daughter married Jacob Minors the native american. Jacob's name is well known, if you see any Minors in St. David's we are descendants of this man and Ruth Fox.

One question.. if you can remember, where did you get your information about Ruth Higgs marrying Joseph Fox? I am looking for more info in Joseph is possible.

I did do my DNA test but not on that site.
Hello

Last fall I was able to get a complete copy of the Higgs book published in 1933. It's several 100 pages and there are at least 15 trees going as far back as King Henry connection. There are also some chapters on specific line of Higgs families. I do hope to get to going through the book within the next couple months so if you would like you can leave the Higgs names and their approximate birthdays on this board and I will post any possible matches if I come accross them. One thing to note is that in the 1500s there really were only about 10 names so in some cases the father will be William Higgs, which often makes the first born son also William Higgs but if something happen to that son and he passed away they often named another son William Higgs. This is why the birthdays are so important.

Thanks
Tyla

Thanks for the response.I've not come across any slavery connection on the Barton side, though as yeoman farmers, several were bigwigs in the local borough of Wallingford. They have memorials in South Stoke parish church which publishes a useful little guide.
The Miller Higgs book traces the Higgs line back to the 1470s in Cheltenham, where they married intoa family with Norman nobility lineage. Ever the opportunists!
Regards
Geoff Higgs

Thank you for getting back with the thoughts that my Ancestor Higgs are from Griffith Higgs/Barton. I have a feeling I read that he went to the Netherlands (Holland) at one time.I am trying to trace the Christian name Holland which runs through my family. Mary Higgs born abt 1768 father Holland Thomas Higgs.Married George William Birkett 1795 Berkshire and the name Holland has been passed down many generations of the Birketts'.Not sure about the Higgs side at present. I had hoped that the wealth of the family had not been brought about by slavery but I Googled Slave Masters the Higgs Family of South Stoke and am not so sure now !! I have not gone down the line of South Stoke parish records as yet but will be doing so shortly, thank you.I am researching so many of my Ancestors, they had huge familes so alot to sort through.
Yes the Higgs Family book seems a very difficult one to pin down.
If we are both from Griffith Higgs then we are related ...../.
Kind regards
Rose

Hello,
I think your line comes down from Griffith Higgs/mary Barton who had a son named Richard. As far as I can tell I come down through Griffith's son Barton. I don't know if you have used them, but the South Stoke parish records provides a plethora of Higgs, but you trace make some fairly strong lines from them.
You may have trouble tracking down the Miller Higgs book. I ended up using the copy in the Oxford archives.
Best of luck,
Geoff Higgs

Hi Mom,

It was fun to read this message from more than 10 years ago. I've seen it a few times in the past couple of years, and just sort of skimmed over it. I thought I would reply, and hopefully clarify a couple of items.

First, Sarah Jane "Sallie" Higgs (according to her tombstone) lived from 28 Feb 1859 - 13 Apr 1936. There is no other information on the marker. She is buried in Savannah, Georgia, but is recorded in census records in both Georgia and South Carolina.

Since you posted your first comment, I am happy to report that you have found the descendants you were searching for. I however am still searching for ancestors of "Sallie", and do not have any confirmation of her husband's name or place of birth. I do know that you were right about all of Sallie's children and would also like to list them here.

Addie Elizabeth Higgs Green 1879-1952
Clara Higgs Banks 1884-
John Frank Higgs 1886-1924
Lillian Cornelia Higgs Alstine 1890-1938
Polly Rosella Higgs Corbett 1894-1966

I believe that Sallie's children were all born in South Carolina in either Jasper County, Hampton County, or Beaufort County areas. They didn't move that much, but in the late 1800s to 1912 the county lines were redrawn several times. More specifically, I believe that Lillian was born in Gillisonville, and that the other children were born in that area around Grays, Ridgeland, Coosawhatchie, etc.

After marriage, Lillian and Addie lived in Savannah. Polly moved to Florida, and I think Clara may have moved to Tennessee. John Frank Higgs died in South Carolina.

The oral tradition states that John Frank may have been named for the father, and that Sallie was born in Augusta, Georgia. Also, Sallie's husband or parents may have been first generation immigrants.

According to 1900 census records, Sallie was listed as a "cook", she was white, but she could not read or write. She and children were living in Lawton Township in Hampton County South Carolina. This census record states that both of her parents were born in South Carolina. I think this might be part of present-day Hilton Head Island.

Also, many of the records from this area were destroyed during the civil war, or by a terrible hurricane that struck during the early 1890s. If anyone has information to share I would be very grateful!!!

My great grandfather was Alfred Frederick Higgs (b1859 in South Africa) and his oldest child, adaughter was Mable Higgs.

Alfred Ferederick's father was William Charles Higgs, born 28 March 1815 in Kent. He migrated to South Africa round about 1835.

Hi - I am not sure if you are still involved in researching ancestry. I am just a beginner on this quest. I also would like to know more about John and Polly Higgs, and wondered if you ever found any further information. They had a son named John, who is my great grandfather. He married Mary Lawson and came to Minnesota. I was able to find Mary's death record, but am still looking in Minnesota for Johns. I would like any information on the Higgs, in one census, John and Lightfoot had the same age, and I wondered if he was a twin, but in another census it listed his sister a year older. Lightfoot is such an unusual name, I had wondered if there may be American Indian in the family. I wish I new more about this family. I found a book "Irish in Minnesota" and it indicated that many Scots Irish settled in Round Praire MN - this is where my grandmother, Eliza Higgs grew up. Any help on the Higgs would be appreciated. I wanted to get to a "ship", but on this lineage, I have come to a stop with John and Polly.
