Highland Family -Colrado, Utah and Wyoming

I am looking for any information on:

Blaine (Blane) James Highland, he married Rebecca Jane Baldwin. They were married in 101 in Big Horn Wyoming.

Blaine Highland was born in Iowa and I know his father was James Highland, mother Catherine (unknown) could of been a step mother, just not sure at this time.

He had an older brother James S. Highland who married a Phobe.

Also, he had a sister, Louisa E. Highland who married a Levi C. Patrick; this family lived in Colrado.

His sister Myrtle married John Dugan Dunbar and lived and died in Buchanan County, Missouri. When she first moved to Missouri she resided with her Uncle John Highland.

Mabel May Highland was a sister, I know she married but not sure, but believe she married Clark Craven.

Blaine and Rebecca had a daughter named Myrtle who was born in 1911 and died in 1931 (young), she married Horace Wesley Black. It appears they were married less than a year prior to her death as he is still listed as single in the 1930 census and she is still living at home.

They also has a son named Clifford C. and a son named James Orville Highland, who married Myrtle Verna Smith.

Blane, Rebbeca and their sons are buried in Mount View Cemetery and his daughter Myrtle Black and infant son B. J. Highland are both buried at Riverview Memorial Gardens in Worland.

There could be more children, but these are the ones I know of as of now.

His father James Highland would be the brother to my great great grandfather John Highland, they are the sons of Mickel and Bridget (McDowney) Highland.

Any help with this family would be so appreciated. I would also love to find a family member to hopefully find photo of this family.

I am uncertain about her siblings Nora & Claud, still looking. The surname Highlen is on the 1900 Census.
I'm also hunting your Garret Highland. He married Mary Wolf in 1845. In 1850 he was listed as George in Marion Co, OH but Mary was 26 years older than he was. In 1860 in Hardin Co, OH he and the children had aged 10 years but Mary only 2. We're trying to verify whether Mary was actually the widow of John Wolf or a daughter. If John's widow, as some say, she would have been 46 years older than Garret! Also, who was Nelson Wallace who lived with that family?

Bryan,

Thank you ever so much for replying to the message I placed on the message board re Martha India Pitman. I did a lot of research on some of her other family members. We would never have found out about her her marriage to John without your help. When I started doing my research I was told that she married a John C. Higland. All of her family that are living at this time never knew what happened to her after she remarried. I will order both John's and Martha's death certificates.

The Sidney Pittman who signed John's death certificate real name was Newton Silvester Pitman. The person who did the early research on the Pitman/Pittman family did not give him my grandfather's name which was John Patterson Pitman, instead she took John's first name and gave it to his younger brother making his name John Silvester instead of Newton Silvester. For 35 years the Pitman/Pittman family did not know that my grandfather existed.

By any chance do you know what happened to her daughter Nora? She lived with her grandparents most of her life.

If you would like to contact me directly feel free to contact me at my e-mail address: rubyjoynes@comcast.net.

Ruby Pitman Joynes
My name is Bryan Hiland. John C. Highland as I've seen spelled is really John E.(Edward)Hilland. People automatically want to spell if Highland. Even now with my name. Most census records even with my recent family is sometimes spelled High. John was first married to Mary Frances Wilson and had 6 children. Mattie,William(my g-grandfather)Minnie,Fen,Della and Theo. John left? around 1894 and married Martha. They lived in commerce, then Anderson and finally Baldwin,Habersham,GA. John died in 1923. I have his death cert. Signed Martha Pitman Hilland and Sidney Pittman.

I can't help you with your search other than a suggestion; have you tried looking for your Highland with the spelling HYLAND? This is how it was spelled origanally & could be why you aren't finding anything. Also, the LDS website (familysearch.org) might have a little something. If you haven't used the LDSS site; the less info you supply the more hits you get on your search. Unfortunately, John is a name that crops up time & again in the Hyland/Highland genealogy. Without a middle name or initial, it's difficult to track them.

My in-laws are Highland, but were from Mass to PA to WV.

No, I'm sorry I don't have any info on your Peter Hyldand. The only Peter Hyland I have is from the 1500's; a son of John & Agnes Hyland from England. This info isn't from my own research but from a book printed in the 1930's that takes the Hyland's back to England. There's no way to prove any of the info unless you travel to England; at least I don't think there would be a way to prove it any other way.

The Hyland's from the 1800's start with John & Talitha Batten Hyland who were from Newport,Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co. DE & in the early 1800's they moved to Harrison Co., WV.

This John Hyland is also tied in with the Hylands' of Elk Neck & Harmony Hall both locations in Cecil Co., MD.

Nicholas Highland (b before 1764) of Washington Co., GA (1785), Warren Co., GA (through 1805), and St. Helena Parish, Louisiana (1806-1819)

Nicholas Highland received three land grants Washington County, Georgia (now in Hancock County) in 1785. He married Lydia Howard, widow of George Hartsfield (Hartfield in subsequent generations) and daughter of Benjamin & Lydia Howard in Warren County, Georgia in 1802. Several tracts of land were surveyed for Nicholas along Twelve Mile Creek in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana in 1806. There is a Warren County, Georgia mortgage from 1805 recorded in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana in 1814. Nicholas appears in a record book for an Inn in Montpelier, St. Helens Parish, in October 1819. Mrs. Lydia Highland appears in the same ledger in November 1821. On 15 June 1837 a Lydia Highland was granted 675 acres in what is now Madison Parish, Louisiana.
I do not know if either Nicholas or Lydia had any children. I suspect Nicholas died sometime between 1819 and 1837. I could not find them in the 1810, 1820, or 1830 Census reports for Louisiana.

Byron,

After John posted his reply, I think I "solved" the mystery of Moore Highland's birthday.

Moore's cemetery listing shows he died 4-29-1871 age 71y 2m 6d which would make his birth date 23 Feb 1800, HOWEVER, his probate shows he died 20 Apr 1871 and using the cemetery age would make his birth date 14 Feb 1800. The stone was probably hard to read and "20" got read and transcribed as "29."

HopeThisHelps,

Dick Whiting, descendant of Moore's daughter Rebecca Highland

Hi John,

Your info helped IMMENSLEY!! My DOB for Moore differs, based on what my Uncle Wayne had learned before his death. Wayne had Feb. 14, 1800 as Moore's birth date. What was your source, if I may ask? Also, How goes the search?
