Would love to have a copy of the picture of John Highley and family. My line is through George W. Highley's second wife and they ended up in Nebraska. My sources are from various places: newspaper articles, census reports, cemetery records, civil war pension file of George. The following about your mother was found on the Newspaper Archives web site. WAUKESHA DAILY FREEMAN, Tuesday, May 18, 1948, page 5
Jean Highley to Graduate in Hawaii in June. Miss Jean F. Highley, daughter of Major and Mrs. Harold O. Highley will graduate from Roosevelt High school in Hawaii June 8. Miss Highley formerly attended Waukesha high school. She plans to enter the University of Hawaii in the fall. Major Highley has been stationed at Hickman field air base since September, 1947. I was surprised to read that Harold's other daughter was called Jerry as I found her name to be Clarabelle J. Highley in my research. She must have used her middle name. I would be happy to share my research with you. Do you want it posted here or sent privately.
Carol

Harold had 2 daughters Jean Francis and Geraldine (we called her Jerry, so I'm not positive about her formal name). Jean is my mother. I think my mom and I have some info on the Highleys but I've been focusing a little more on my father's side so I'm not sure where it is. is most of your research from family records or census records? I wish I had more to give you, but I do have a family photo of John Highley and his family that I can scan in. No direct line to you and I think that's the oldest photo I have. i have not set up anything yet on ancestry.com with photos or anything nor have i officially joined - still on a trial/free basis. So did your g grandmother end up in Wisconsin also? Cathy

His parents were George W. Highley and Mary Jane Strohl. George was born about 1832 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio and died Dec 1904. He is buried at Ansley, Custer, Nebraska. I would guess that he died there as well. He married 16 Apr 1854 in Hocking County, Ohio and had two children Martha Ellen Highley and John Wesley Highley. After Mary Jane died, he married Mahala Jane Hooper 20 Nov 1862 in Hocking county, Ohio. They had 9 children including Eunice Myrtle Highley, my great-grandmother. What specifically did you want to know? Will try to help you. The parents of George W. Highley are Thomas Highley born Jan 1793 in Pennsylvania and died 24 Apr 1867 in Hocking County, Ohio. He married Susanna Guist (also spelled Guise or Gist). They had 6 children that I know about although another researcher indicates there were 2 more but she had no documentation for them. Which of Harold Highley's children are you descended from?
Carol

From the previous post:

"He is probably identical with the William Highley later found in Virginia's backcountry, the only William Highley known to have lived in the colonies during this time. According to family tradition and public records, this William Highley had emigrated from England and subsequently married a woman named Polly, who may have been Irish."

This raises the question as to how may William Highley's there were. Was there really a Sr b1724 and Jr b.1740 William Highley, or are they both one and the same person?

The same question may also be asked about John H Highley, which name I have seen given to both the son b.1759 and grandson b.1780 of the William Highley b.1740. And I have also seen the 1780 John H Highley listed as the son of the b.1724 William Highley. So, are they also really one person?

The more I look the more confused thing appear.

Here is some more info:

http://www.immigrantservants.com/servant/show.php?servant=53...

Family: "William Highley (Hyley, Hiley) was born about the year 1724 in the West of England. His home parish has not been discovered. As a young man, William probably became an iron-maker. William got in trouble with the law and in his mid-thirties was transported to Maryland as a convict indentured servant. He caught his last glimpse of England from the docks in Liverpool. The passenger list has not been located, but it is known that he left from Liverpool in 1760. Upon his arrival in the British colonies, John Frederick Augustus Priggs of Prince George's County, Maryland purchased William's service. Probably equipped with a valuable skill, Highley's service could have merited a higher price in the thriving iron works of Maryland in comparison to unskilled laborers aboard the same ship. After serving only four years of his term, he ran away. Several months of vain attempts by Priggs to apprehend his runaway servant by publishing advertisements describing him in the Maryland Gazette apparently came to naught. He is probably identical with the William Highley later found in Virginia's backcountry, the only William Highley known to have lived in the colonies during this time. According to family tradition and public records, this William Highley had emigrated from England and subsequently married a woman named Polly, who may have been Irish. For 15 years following his escape, no trace of him has been discovered in public records. He fathered five children who reached adulthood, the eldest of which was born within a year or two of William's escape from servitude. His three sons: James, Thomas, and John appear to have followed in their father's footsteps and learned the iron-making and iron-mongering trades. William died in the mid-1790s, near the age of 70."
William Highly b.1724 father of William Highley b. 1740

I think I may have found some info on the ancestor's of Willaim Highley b.1740.

The following comes from a 2006 posting here on this Highley board, and it confirms what I have found in searching the internet, that there are two William Highleys, father and son, Sr and Jr. The William Highley below is the Father of the William Highley born 1740. I have also noted in searching the internet that Mary Campbell is often listed as the wife of both of these Williams. And since I don't have a birth date for Mary I can't say for sure which William she is truly the wife of.

Another point of interest - Note the radical change in the spelling of Highley in prior generations:

Highley - Highly - Healy - Hele
-------------------------------------------------

William Highly b.1724 in West County England
d.1797 in Franklin Virginia USA
Emigrated 1760 Liverpool Lancashire England

Parents:
Father: William Healy b.1697 in England
Mother: Mary Brown b.1697

William Healy parents:

Father: Nathaniel Healy b.

I am looking for information about a baby who is buried in the Prater Cemetery in New Mexico. The headstone reads: KIRK W.E. with BABY underneath.
The headstone looks like it may have been made at home -not professionally engraved.
I believe the baby was a girl born to Wanda Kirk, daughter of Joseph Moore Kirk and Emma Foster Highley, sometime after 1940 and before 1949. I believe the baby's father may have been John Clinton Highley, the youngest son of Louis Choate Highley and Jettie Apple.
The baby may have been stillborn, premature,or a later-term miscarriage. I have not been able to find birth or death records.
If anyone can give me any information at all, or give me a new direction to look, I would really appreciate it.

I have found something quite odd in my husbands family tree that i wondered if any one else had seen. I am researching his fathers side(highley). I've gone back as far as william highley b 1787 d 1850 In Virgina M Mary Copher 1792-1850.
But when i dug deeper i found him attatched to a James Hale b1765-d 1835 Whose father went by the last name hill? Could it be just a recording issue or did these men really change their names? And if they changed thier names why? Just wondering and throwing out ideas

Could we be looking for information regarding the same person? I am looking for information about my husband's father. His name was John Clinton Highley but he was commonly called Clinton. He was born in Oklahoma on 8 January, 1922 and would have been 8 years old at the time of the 1930 census. I know very little about his family but I do have some additional information that I would be happy to share with you if you think it would be helpful. I would really appreciate any information you may have that might help me, as well. Thank you for your time and interest. Kris

Looking for some information on John S. Pennypacker (1795-1835) and his wife Mary Highly (1798-1835). I have seen information about their family suggesting they had 10 children -- the dates of birth of their children would suggest that they left many young orpahns when they both died.

Does anyone know what happened to these children after their parents' death and/or what caused the death of John and Mary at such young ages? Does anyone have an obituary for either of these individuals?

Finally, I found a marriage record for John and Mary that shows Mary's father as Henry Highly., but I don't have any further information about him. Does anyone know if this Henry Highly/Highley was the same Henry Highly (b 1772) who married Hannah Saylor and who was the son of John Highley and Elizabeth Taney?

I am a decendent of Isaac Highley. There are 3 George Highley's I know of in my lineage...one whom had died at infancy.

The reason why I asked if you had any further info was because sometimes, someone looking for a particular surname ends up finding out they are related to another surname so they look up that name. This then helps each person get closer to whom they are looking for.

I have been in your situation many times...I am in a "slump" now with a different surname. But in due time, I know I'll find what I am looking for.

I hope the best for you in your search! :) Let me know if I can help.

Gloria

I figured if they were descendants of George Douglas Highley they would know who they were without further information since he died in the 40's. Are you a descendant of George?

Do you have any birth/death dates on these people? How about where they were born or parents names?

The more information you can give, the more someone could help you.

Gloria
