Yes - the cerificate is for "Eliakim Hillman". I am using a variety of information sources and they are all supporting each other. Using the city directories, you can find Eliakim living next to Streaker in-laws. Another Streaker descendant contacted me and said a "George Washington Hillman, freight agent" made a statement in the late 1890's that his uncle was Charles Hillman, the noted shipbbuilder. I found this G.W.Hillman in census records, backtracked to the Census of 1850 and found his father, William Hillman, then tracked William Hillman to the Census of 1870 - Household of Elizabeth Fetters, widow of James, and an aged "Josiah Hillman" - all before I read your reply! All these people are living next door or within doors of each other! I have no qualms about STRONGLY suspecting that Eliakim is Charles' father, and Josiah, William and Elizabeth Fetters are close relatives. More later, when I return from my trip. Rich

I was a little confused hen you stated that you had found a "Seaman's Protection Certificate" for Elikim Streaker. Did you mean Eliakim Hillman? For I did find Eliakim Hillman and his wife Mary in the 1850 Kensington and 1860 NE Div 18th Ward, Phillie census records. It may be stretching it a bit to suggest that he was Charles' Hillman's father. It is interesting to note that Charles did name a son George, a son Josiah, and a daughter Margitt. Speaking of Josiah, he does appear in Florence Hillman's West New Jersey Hillman Families as the son of another Josiah who was the third generation from the first John that settled at Gloucester Co, NJ, in 1691.She lists no wife for him, but a dau Elizabeth who married james Fetters. It would be helpful if we could find an estate record for Eliakim.

I found more on your George Washington Hillman, freight agent. He was the son of William and Margaret Hillman - see Census of 1850/Kensington - 2nd Ward. Father born about 1816/New Jersey; mother born about 1817/England. CAREFUL - all their data has been misassociated with a William Hillman among the descendants of the "Stokes Family of Burlington NJ". George was born about 1841/PA, died early January 1918/Phila (buried Mt. Peace Cemetery/Phila); the family plot includes his wife, Margaret (1843-1919), Laura (1868-1877) and Mary (1869-1898). His father, William Hillman (b.1816/N) was living with Josiah Hillman (see Census of 1870/Phila - 16 Ward), who seems to have been a close relative (b.1789/NJ), possibly his father? Josiah and William were living in the household of Elizabeth Fetters (b.1815/NJ - a sister?), wife of James Fetters. Most of Charles Hillman's sons died in Philadelphia but one, Josiah Hillman disappears from records shortly after his father's death in 1898; maybe he is a Hillman who "went West"?
Hello! So glad to hear from a "member of the family"! I've found a "Seamen's Protection Certificate" (1822), for an "Eliakim Streaker"; he states he is age 31 (born about 1791, then), "a native of Cumberland County, New Jersey"! Could he be among the "Hillmans of West Jersey", or are they from an earlier period? I'm pretty sure this is Charles' father, as Charles' obituary mentioned his father had been a seaman. The Philadelphia City Directory of 1848 lists Eliakim on "Fraley's Alley, Kensington", where the Streaker family also lived, along the Kensington waterfront. In the Census of 1850, Eliakim's next door neighbor is "John Binker". John's daughter, Deborah Binker, was the wife of Elias Streaker, the brother of Charles Hillman's partner, David V. Streaker! All circumstantial evidence but convincing to me, and there are additional supporting facts over time. Eliakim appears in the records of St. John's M.E.Church/Northern Liberties (1823) with spouse Rebecca, daughters Deborah and Elisa. He is a Head of Houesehold in the Census of 1840/Kensington - 4th Ward [waterfront area]. The Census of 1850 includes "Charllote Hillman - 22" [daughter?]; perhaps Charles' sister, she died in 1857. I've also found a Francis Hillman (1826-1872) and James Hillman (1830-?) who may be siblings; still investigating. Eliakim died 20 October 1874. The Census of 1850 includes "Mary Hillman - 52", who I assume may be his second wife; she died 9 January 1876. Eliakim, Mary and Charlotte were all buried in Kensington cemeteries (possibly the same under different names). I'll see if I can locate this "George W. Hillman, Freight Inspector" in census records, a valuable lead! I've never heard of H.W.Hillman or his "Hillman Family" book of 1905 - can you give me the full book i.d. (title, full publisher, etc) - it might provide additional leads. Maybe working together we can find more pieces; in any case, thanks for the new data! On with 'The Hunt'!
I am unable to identify his parents. He states that he was b. in PA in both 1860 and 1880 census records of Philadelphia. He is not among my records of the descendanys of John Hillman of Nartha's Vineyard. Florence M. Hillman does not list him in her work of the John Hillman Family of West New Jersey (1998). H W Hillman in his published Hillman Family of 1905 states on p. 122 that he received a letter in March 1898 from George W. Hillman, Freight Inspector, Philadelphia, stating that his uncle's name was Charles Hillman of the Hillman Shipbuilding Co. and that several of his father's family went west several years ago. I am also unable to positively identify this George W. Hillman. Any comments will be appreciated.

I am looking for family and business information (particularly ancestors) for Charles Hillman of Philadelphia (1823-1898), shipwright and founder of Hillman & Streaker Co. (1840's), partner in Birely, Hillman & Streaker (1866-1888), then owner of Hillman Ship & Engine Co. (1888-1899), along with his sons Bartholomew, Josiah and Jonathan Hillman. His other son, Charles W. Hillman was an independent lawyer. The Hillman shipyards were in the Kensington shipbuilding district; another yard operated briefly on the Camden NJ waterfront in the late 1800's. He may have been a collateral relative of another noted Kensington shipwright, John K. Hammitt, under whom he served his apprenticeship.

obit - Jack HILLMAN, 1922 CA - 2011 CA

JACK HILLMAN | not related - for board info

Jack Leroy Hillman, loving husband, devoted family man, thoughtful brother, faithful friend, proud veteran, and self taught mechanic and builder, age 89, resident of Pinon Hills, died November 13, 2011. A lifelong Californian, he was born June 11, 1922 in Shale, California, a remote oil lease in Kern County. He served in the Army Air Corps and USAF from 1940 to 1971, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer. In 1950 Jack and Barbara relocated from Sacramento to Moreno Valley where they raised their family for 30 years, except for military assignments to Washington DC, Japan, Hawaii and Guam. They moved to Pinon Hills in 1980, where they were members of High Desert Baptist Church in Phelan, VFW post 2924 in Hesperia, and The Good Sam Club. Jack loved to travel, especially with Barb, and they enjoyed many distant and exciting places around the world. His post-military years as a truck driver took him all around the American Southwest and as far north as Canada. Keeping careful records of roads and towns visited, he enjoyed the adventure of finding a new route to any destination. With a lifetime of air travel, Jack also kept a careful flight log of every flight, even creating his own private "frequent flyer" awards at significant distance milestones. His varied travels allowed him the pleasure of discovering and collecting many exotic items, including American Indian rugs, Asian statuary, Jade and turquoise, and as many as 3000 unique beer cans for his shop walls. An eloquent writer, Jack wrote a weekly newspaper column in the early 1980's, reflecting on his views of the people, landscape, and wildlife of Pinion Hills. He and Barb were also avid bird lovers, providing sanctuary and regular feedings for generations of grateful quail on their property. Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 66 years, daughters Elaine Stricklin of Glendora, CA, Lauren Odle of Minnesota, Jacalyn Behrends of Moreno Valley, CA, his son Jeffrey of Virginia, and his sister Marianne Hillman of Pomona, CA. Jack is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, two of whom are named after him. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am at High Desert Baptist Church, 10484 Johnson Road, Phelan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's name to the charity of your choice or to High Desert Baptist Church.
Published in the Daily Press from November 17 to November 27, 2011

Florence M. Hillman produced a fine genealogical study in 1998 of the family of John Hillman of Gloucester County, New Jersey. He was from Gloucstershire, England, born, say 1657. He married 1) Elizabeth Stanford who d. in 1692. They had two children. He married 2) Margaret (Collins) Ward, and they had three children. John died 1729 at Gloucester Co, NJ.
In the preface to her study she mentioned other Hillmans known to have come early to the colonies. Elliner Hillman came in 1632; Willliam was settled in Virginia by 1646. Edward was also in Virginia by 1655. Thomas and his son Richard were were in Virginia in 1659. These latter three were from Somersetshire, England. There still still others. More later.

I have been studying the Hillman Family records for some forty years. I have searched English records extensively for proof of the parents of John Hillman who settled at Martha's Vineyard in the 1670s and was probably born in England about 1651. I have no confidence in those reports that suggest his father was John, Joseph, Andrew, Thomas, or whatever. As far as I am concerned, his parents have yet to be discovered. I am confident that he married Hannah Cottle and that he had six children.

I have been researching the Hillmans for quite a few years and am still thoroughly confused by this family. I have as far back as John born 1655 in England and Died 1729 in U.S. Recently I have found on several trees that he has a father Thomas who was married to Jane,Jane Allen born 1591 and 1595 respectfully and Jane dying in 1622 which would be before any childrens births. Also found some very interesting trees with valuablbe info but being witten way back it is hard to read. Also found Thomas Hillmans parents to be Vincent and Lucretia End Hillman. Any help with verifying any of this would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you
Connie

I am also looking into and trying to validate what is being published as to who Charles Lewis Hillman's father was. I traveled to South Carolina earlier this year and was disappointed to find that very few documents concerning families who settled in the Lexington, South Carolina area survived the war between the states. We did find some small pieces of information as to land Charles Lewis was granted and later sold. I have also traveled to Mississippi and Alabama and discovered interesting things about the family and went to many cemeteries. I would be interested in comparing information. Do you know of anyone who has participated in the DNA study?
Sarah,

I would suggest that you use one of the many family history chatrooms on the web for this sort of query. The one I use is www.rootschat.com The people there are very knowledgable, friendly and helpful and have an international coverage.

The advantage with this is that they can clarify the information you have given much more quickly than via these message boards.

I would start by ordering copies of the relevant birth, marriage and death documents for Ivor Hillman from the Registrar General's Office. This can be done online.

Copies of Wills and grants of Probate can be obtained from the Family Courts Division Offices in Yorkshire. but sometimes you will find someone amongst the genealogy community going to visit the central indexes at High Holborn in London and who can easily look Ivor Hillman up on their computer or in the index books to see if a will exists.

My email is Howard Dee oh Tea Eastcott atte btinternet dee oh tee com or you'll find it in full if you search for my surname on this page http://resources.rootsweb.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_gues...

So if you want the references for the BMD's please email me.

best Howard

Ivor George Thomas Hillman aka Ivor Thomas George Hillman b 19 Sept 1911
m1 Winifred Mary Banfield Dec qtr 1931 Clutton Somerset. Only one child I found to this marriage was a girl Shirley M Hillam Mar 1932. There are some Banfield/mother's maiden name Banfield births in Clutton in 1931 so perhaps one of these was your husband's father.
m2 Janet Patricia Taylor/Williamson Sep qtr 1953 Bristol - She died in Bath in 1983 birth given as 1919 so it is possible she and Ivor had further children in the Bristol area in the 1950's.
Ivor died 1997 Bristol so his will or administration might give a lead to further family members.
Ivor was the second child of George Hillman and Bertha Bull of Clutton, Somerset. Their other children were Beryl Ivy Rebecca Hillman b 12/7/1910 died unmarried Mar 2005 in Mendip.
Queen M Hillman Jun 1915 - 1989 d. Bath
Herbert Hillman 1921 Clutton d Bath 1982. - May have married.
George Hillman and Bertha Bull married in Clutton in 1909 and on the 1911 census are living with Georges family in Clutton.

HTH,

Best,

Howard
There are a lot of us!! I have a considerable about of information tied to my ancestry.com tree and work every night to validate and add more. I have been working between ancestry.com and findagrave.com to gather information and trying to get all of the Charles Lewis Family linked on Findagrave.com. I have been working one of the Charles Lewis kids all the way to current surviving family members so it is taking me awhile. But, if you want to help or see what is done so far, see memorial number 19145990 on findagrave.com. So far, I have two of his kids linked to him and just asked the memorial owner for Riley Hammet to link their memorial to Charles Lewis. I am also working to confirm the link between Charles Lewis Hillman to his father John Henry Hallman. There is information available on the Hallman family and I think that link is correct but I want to be able to prove it.

1901 census gives their year of arrival in Canada as 1857.

It also gives her birthdate as 10 Mar 1833, and his as 6 Feb 1835. These aren't proof, but they are a decent start if you want to find Richard's birth.

Have you tried looking for William Henry's will?
