Dear Peter
Thank you for contacting me. My husband, DONALD, is descended from NEHEMIAH senior through his son EDWARD THOMAS HILLOCKS and his daughter EDWARDINA. She married DAVID DODGSON and their daughter MARY EDITH was my mother in law. If you have access, our tree is on Ancestry. I have FREDERICK b.1900 but had no marriage or children so it's nice to know about you. Please contact me if I can be of any help.
Regards
Marilyn MacDonald

Hi Marilyn.

A further note. Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland gave the Name "Hillocks" to a group of the MacDonald clan in 1623 after their defense of a group of Hillocks in the Battle of Bannockburn. You appear to have come full circle with a MacDonald becoming a Hillocks again.

Peter

Hi there,

Sorry to contact you this way. I saw your information about the McBain family from Berwick, Scotland and was interested. I am a relative of Margaret McBain, whose parents were Alexander McBain and Elizabeth Chisholm. I couldn't find a way of contacting you that I could do with my free Ancestry membership, so I hope you don't mind that I did it this way. I am really curious to see what information you have and would be more than willing to share anything I have that you might be interested in.

Robin Dudgeon
Winnipeg, MB, Canada

PS you can also send me an email at robindudgeon @ hotmail . com

Marilyn,

Thanks for your reply and observations! For various reasons--some of which I'll name--the Arterburns do not seem to link up with Otterburn or Etterburn (Scotland). DNA testing seems to rule out Otterburn, and Etter is an early documented German surname (as is Born), which suggests a different origin for Etterburn. The Scottish "Etterburn" remains, nonetheless, a possibility.

Atterburn is a real possibility, but appears to have an earlier precursor in Aterborne/Atterborn (London). An American family tradition of German ancestry for Arterburns, together with other indirect evidences of this in America, lead me to consider that Arterburn may be a later variant of Atterborn, which may have originated as the compound name of Atter and Born (both documented German surnames). [There are a few other German surnames that seem to share the Born root name: Edenborn, Edeborn, Sanborn, Kaltenborn, etc.]

Since many Germans immigrated to and through the British Isles (including Scotland and Ireland), I suspect many of these unusual names/families that appear in the British Isles, and that also appear in early German records, may have originally been German immigrants. Anglicization of German/European names occurred in both the British Isles as well as America.

Given the above likely heritage for Arterburn, my suspicion about Margaret "Hillox" (wife of James Atterburn whose daughter, Elizabeth, was born in Angus County, Scotland, 1753) is that this surname is awfully close to "Helleckes, Hillekes, Hilleckes"--contemporary German surnames (see GeoGen, online), and the various early forms of this surname which appear in IGI German records. "Hillox" and your "Hillocks" are also close enough to be the same surname, if not the same family.

Thanks again for sharing your feedback!

Best wishes,
Charles R. Arterburn

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Arterburn/

Dear Charles,
I'm sorry but my Hillocks are from northern Ireland though they may have been some of the Scots settlers who went to Ulster. I have checked lots of 'Angus' Hillocks in the past but found no link.
Your surname is very unusual and it struck me immediately how like the Northumberland, England place-name 'Otterburn' it is and I hope you don't mind but as I had just been looking at the 'ScotlandsPeople' website, I tried it and it came up with some births in Angus. When I tried your name with the 'soundex' option, it came up with your ancestors' marriage to Margaret Hillocks with his surname as 'Etterburn' at Arbirlot on tenth of June, 1743. These spelling variants are a nightmare and it just depended on how the Parish Clerk decided a name should be spelled.
I hope this might give you another avenue to explore.
Kindest regards,
Marilyn MacDonald

From IGI (LDS Family History Center, online):

ELIZABETH ATTERBURN Pedigree
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 23 APR 1753 Arbirlot, Angus, Scotland

Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JAMES ATTERBURN Family
Mother: MARGARET HILLOX

Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.
Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:

C112712 1632 - 1780 0993329-0993330 Film 6902943 Film

-----------------

Not much to go on, but my surname, "Arterburn/Atterburn," appears to have been an Anglicized German (or Germanic) name. My surname only appears in a few scant records such as this and in London--other than America. From the looks of your family's given names (Peter, Johanna), they might have originated in Germany/Europe, also. Have you had any success in tracing "Hillocks" so far?

Best wishes,
Charles R. Arterburn
Researching this family. These are the children of Nehemiah Hillocks and Ann George who married in Cornwall in 1850. My husband is a descendant of Edward. Have traced Ann's family for a few generations but can't find Nehemiah's father Peter, who his mother was or other siblings. Will gladly share what I do have.
