Sharon- Actually I have quite a lot more, listed on the MyFamily.com Hills site. I had thought you were a member.

These folks are actually distant relatives of mine. Elijah% in your line was the older brother to my line's yet another Samuel Hills. Elijah was #187 in The Hills Family In America. His brother Samuel #188 is my direct ancestor. Both were born in Lebanon, Connecticut and show in Barbour's Vital Records.

The last mention of your folks in Hills Family In America #424 for Consider whose birth in Connecticut was known but not of any descendants.

There are obvious issues with records in New York at early dates. We do know that the family came to New York following destruction of New London, Connecticut in 1781 when the port and surrounding areas were destroyed by the British lead by Benedict Arnold. The first Samuel Hills, his sons Samuel and Phillip founded Goshen, Conn in 1726.

The story about the military scout I believe applies to Eliab (Elijah)'s father Consider rather than to Elijah. There's a descendant of Consider who still has his tomohawk and a rolling pin that came down.

There was an uncle who was the first Quartermaster in Oneida County for the local militia. My ancestor Samuel came to Canajoharie, Montgomery County NY in 1784 with proceeds from Connecticut for destruction of the family homestead. Another brother - another Consider Hills- settled in Brookfield, Madison County NY. There were a few more in close by Vermont areas

Early settlement in that area of New York often had to do with Bounty Awards arising out of service in the American Revolution.

You sure have allot. I never sent for Eugene's probate info and I see my great grandfather was not listed in your info but I did send for Abigail's and my great grandfather had passed on before her but his wife Jennie was in Abigail's probate. I haven't done anything on this in a long time and am not sure what it even said. I will search for what I have and get back with you.
Thanks John (funny, my brothers name is John Hills too)

Sharon- You probably have most of this.

Eugene N. Hills8, Eliab (Elijah)7, Consider6, Eliah5, Samuel4, Samuel3, ?John2, William1. He was born Jan 29, 1821 in Mexico, Oswego County, NY son of Eliab (Elijah) Hills and Lucy; and died December 13, 1876. He married Abigail Savage daughter of Gibson Savage and granddaughter of Joel Savage one of the pioneers of Oswego County. There were no children for Eugene and Abigail (Savage) Hills.

He left a prosperous farm. His will was subject to a probate brought by Abigail Hills in Oswego County. His will lists the following as heirs and next of kin:

Naomi Fuller of Columbia County, NY
Jerusha Johnson of Champion, Jefferson County, NY
Thomas Hills of Loughboro, Canada
Lucien Hills of Lagoda, Wisconsin
Mary N. Burnham of Parish, Ny
William H Hills and Caroline Harris of Chaumont, NY
Bryon Hills and Frank K Hills of Attas. Mich
Jerusha Bates of Cleveland, Ohio
Henry N Stevens of Watertown, NY
Howard Stevens of Pulaski. NY

I have information that Eugene probably had the following brothers and sisters: Thomas, Lucien Henry, Lucy and Maria There are stories of Eliab (also known as Elijah) was a military scout in Western NY. He was taken captive at one point and ran a gauntlet and survived along with one other of the scouting party.

Of the siblings and relatives. I have considerable information on Lucien Henry Hills of Lagoda and Byron Hills of Attas.

The Hills site has pictures of Lucien Henry's homestead and family. Various of these folks appear in census, homestead, county histories and the like.

My piece on Descendants of Samuel Hills #188 (The Hills Family In America) has entries for many thousands of relatives of this family. The earliest ancestor is that Samuel Hills who appears as bridegroom in 1694 to Phebe Leonard of Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. Samuel's ancestry is much debated. He is probably not a grandson of William Hills of Hartford, Connecticut. He may be connected to a Hercules Hills who arrived in Scituate, Mass in 1633-1634- probably a great nephew if that. The Mayflower Society lists Hercules as a minister at Boughton Under Blean in Kent, Uk. That entry is probably an error since Hercules's deed of 1660 lists his occupation as carpenter. Scituate records show him as fisherman, soldier and freeman.

We have two other researchers for this family. He does not show in the 1957 work Descendants of Samuel Hills by Winifred Lovering Holman (1957). But she was primarily concerned with a different line.

Info on George Lee who married Eliza Hills 1866 Norton Church, Baldock

I'll be visiting Baldock UK in May 2012 and hope to find relatives of George Lee and Eliza Hills [b about 1847]. They were married January, 1866 at Norton Church in Baldock. Both families were from either Baldock or surrounding areas I think. Eliza's father may be Thomas Hills. George and Eliza had a daughter Emma [b. 1871]. They immigrated to the US in 1878 or 1882. Emma married George Brady. Any information would be most welcome and appreciated. Years are approximate.

HILLS FAMILY TREE

Hello,
I am trying to learn more about the Hills family tree. I have a few names from my father's side, if anyone has any info at all please message me.

Father - Anthony Edward Hills, born April 1947 in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)

Grandfather - George Edward Hills, born 25th March 1904 in Siam (now Bangkok), married Margaret Beale, born 16 October 1925 (father was an Irish coffee planter in India, possibly named Sean Beale). George moved to Sri Lanka at some point where my father was born.

Great-grandfather - Herbert Edward Hills, born 22 November 1846 in or around Ramsgate, Kent, UK. He was a railway engineer. Married Mae Hills who was supposedly a Thai Princess (there were a lot at the time!)

Great-great-grandfather - Joseph Edward Hills, born I think around 1800. He was a Butcher / shop owner by trade. He married Sarah Busbridge.

Great-great-great-grandfather - James Edward Hills, also a Butcher / shop owner by trade.

If anyone has any info at all on these people please contact me at ryanhills80@hotmail.com

Recently found out an ancestor of mine married a Hills.
Therefore, I am looking for any descendants of Walter Hills (born 1875, Cambs) and Susannah Norman (born 1871, Sussex). They were married in 1897, registered in Linton, Cambridgeshire. Walter was a signalman at Newmarket, working for G.E.R.
By 1911, they had five daughters, Evelyn, Gladys, Hilda Maude, Esther Norman, and Ada. I haven't found marriages for the daughters yet, but I'm working on it.
If this rings a bell with anyone, I would love to hear from you.
Regards,
Andy

I show Hercules was the son of a Hercules. One of these Hercules appears in Scitucate, Mass in 1634. He was in Rochester, UK when he sold property in Plymouth Colony in 1660. I show a mortgage from 1659 on his Rochester property. He may have been the minister of ST Peter and Paul's in 1645-1650.

I know it is long ago. But we have a fairly solid genealogy starting in 1671 for possible descendants.

Faversham Abbey was the owner of St Peter and Paul's in Boughton, at least until Henry VIII. Both towns are fairly close.

From the parish register at St Peter and Paul's at Boughton-

Baptismal records-

Father- Hercules Hills

Marie 27 July 1580
Austen last of SEptember 1582
William 28 Nov 1585
Gabriel 22 Jan 1587
Hercules 12 April 1589
Frances -- Oct 1595

Michael Hills father

Alice- 20 August 1595
Elizabeth -- August 1597
Michael -- 27 Jan 1599
Ann 7th Nove 1602
Richard 3 May 1608
Ann 6 Feb 1610

Jeffrey Hills Father

Ann 16 April 1607
Thomas 1 April 1609

Hercules Hills father
Hi there, many thanks for your reply. I have found some info on him from the parish records in Faversham at the Family History Centre - essentially the birth of his son Albert Hills in the parish birth records.

I am wondering if anyone has any info on the butchers shop that he ran in Ospringe Street in Faversham in the 1840s. From some more research, I think his elder son Henry Hills took over the butcher shop after he died.

Most of my Hills are in Faversham and Margate.

Many Thanks

Have you tried to get someone to do a lookup at the Faverhsam Church registry.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=dat8fmjqv...

I don't know if this source is still available. I do know that Google has made many of the old registers available. You can also go to an LDS History Center and see if the register has been microfilmed.

Am curious as to whether or not there is any connection to either the Hills in Boughton or to the Canterbury Hills.

Hi

I'm trying to find out any information about John Hills, Butcher, Ospringe Street, Faversham, born abt 1816, died abt 1850/51.

I believe he was a butcher there from 1840's up until about 1851 when I believe he died but his wife Harriet continued running the butcher shop.

Any info anyone has would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I suppose anything is possible but proof may well be otherwise. Lyman is both a given and a surname. So there may be multiple sources for it.

The first wife of William Hills, the 1632 emigrant who is listed as one of the founders of Hartford, Conn., had a first wife named Phillis Lyman but none of the kids were named Lyman.

Most of the early Hills to America came from a relatively small area of England in Kent or Essex but dna testing says they did not share a common ancestor within historically relevant times. Some came from villages less than 10 miles apart. You can check FamilyTreeDNA.com for the Hill/Hills surname project. That resource may narrow your research to a possible family line.

We know that the surname Hills has more than 30 variations and that people with the surname have come from Russia, Germany, Finland along with the British isles.

After I chased things up in NZ I had other concerns for a while.

Happy to share resources. ATM I'm working on a general shakeout of Hills in Maidstone running back from the 1841 Census. By eliminating the impossibles I'm hoping to get a better grip on who was who back then. At present I think I've finally identified "our" John Hills (probably the one Baptised 12 Feb 1692) and his parents Joseph (probably the one Baptised 28 Mar 1665) and Alicia, and through that his grandparents, John and Jane.

Well- if you want to look him up. Lyman Hills connected to Lebbeus is #946 in Hills Family In America. I'm not convinced of a connection. There are perhaps another 4 or 5 and a number of Lorens, Lorrins and Lorenzos.

You would probably do better with the land records (homestead stuff) out of Kent County. They are readily available from the National Archives or from a Family History Center.

Lebbeus Hills Jr was the quartermaster in 1784 to Farrel's Regiment in Oneida County, NY. There are holes in his family but his immediate kids were known and did not include a Loan or Loren. There were very few Hills families in Western New York in early days.

We do know that there were additional Hills immigrants after the American Revolution. Hills Family In America is primarily concerned with families traced to William Hills of Hartford Conn (arrived 1632), Joseph Hills of Malden Mass (arrived 1638), Robert Hills of Wye (arrived Boston about the American Revolution) and several thought to be related. My own family traces to a Samuel Hills of Duxbury, Plymouth Colony who show for the first time for his wedding in 1694. Most of these families had groups that went west after the American Revolution. Many were "lost to sight" as the saying went.

If you have a Hills surnamed relative, dna testing might be in order. FamilyTreeDNA has a Hill/Hills project with over 500 test results.

Turner is a distance cousin to me. His family came to Michigan from Vermont. Far as I know-- no connections to your Loan. Possible I suppose. We do have a Lebbeus Hills who had a son Lyman for what that might be worth.

The only mention I could find of Loan Hills is in the 1830 Federal Census for New York. He shows in Genesee County in Alexander. Genesee County was the original county in 1808 for Niagra (Newfane is in Niagra County) and was itself taken from Ontario County in 1802. New York research requires being able to connect dates to a place.

I found nothing of a Loan in either the 1906 Hills Family in America or the 1908 Supplement. I checked NY and Connecticut census from 1790 to 1840.

He may show as Hill rather than Hills in earlier census which I did not check.

Far as I know the earliest Hills in that area settled in Oneida County in the 1780's. I could not find the name Loan in any of them but the name Lyman does show.

Loan is a very unusual name.

The earliest mention of Hills in Genesee County is in Batavia where a Paul Hills in mentioned in 1802 as an original settler.

Sorry not to have found more.

Hi Greg
one of my relatives has just passed on your message. Not sure if we've been in contact before or not. I'm the great granddaughter of Joseph Edward. Have been researching our Hills families of origin since 1988. I stayed in Maidstone abt 8yrs ago and did extensive research there. Hopefully you were as successful as I was. Pity I didn't get you email before hand & I could have saved you some time. Anyway, if you can to share anything gleaned, feel free to contact me.
Hi June
Since our last messages in 2004, I have found that my James Hills born 1838, married Elizabeth Cross, father of William James Hills, father of Derek Hills, to me. On the 1881 census, James Ills is living in Cambridge. His parents are Thomas Hills and Mary Grummet. Thomas parents are Thomas Hills and Sarah Pearson. Thomas Hills (married to Mary Grummot) and your James are brothers. I also have heaps on the HIlls line if you wish to compare notes. I can send to you via email. My home email is superjacis@hotmail.com

regards

Lesley in Australia

hi lesley, is it possible your james and my james could be the same person.
my james hills was born 1848( app) clifton and christened 24 dec 1848 clifton, beds. he married a mary ann jordan ( b.henlow ) on 14 march 1868 clifton.
james father is thomas hills .b. 1821 langford, beds. and his mother is eliza crossley .m. 20 jan 1844 langford, beds.
at the 1881 census james and mary were living clifton fields, clifton, beds.
thier children were; charles 1869; george 1871; thomas 1873; arthur 1875; annie 1878; albert 1880. you say your james moved to bedford, if this is the same as my james where in bedford did they live? i have been going through the igi on the fhs and the hills are all over beds counties. i think also the 's' has been left off, this makes it harder to find them when they have moved about the counties. i have a long decendants list i am working through, i have 2 contacts from genes connected who have passed on what they have so i have my work cut out. if we connect and i can help in any way just let me know. regards june

I have been searching for the family of Albert Henry Hills born Dec 9, 1911. He married Lavinia L. Bull Aug 25, 1934 in Surrey South Easton. They had two children - a daughter Lynda Lavinia and a son ? Kenneth or David (can't seem to find any info on him) - he was supposed to have gone to an aunt to be raised. Albert H. Hills died and Lavinia remarried a Thomas James Howell (we have been in touch with the Howell family only to find that Lavinia passed away a few years ago.

Would appreciate any info you might have.

janice.rioux@sympatico.ca

I've sent three invitations to the HillsMyFamily.com site through the site. I've now sent 2 direct emails to you. One of which includes a temporary user name and password. I'm not sure what else I can do.

Hopefully this works. John
