I know it must be weird to finally have a message from me. I had to change my email address several years ago.
Am still interested in pursuing the Minor Hilliard family line; in fact, I have just accidentally located another ancestress I was looking for. Persis Gold was, I believe, Miner Hilliard's mother, married to George.
Also, I'm interested to pursue the Mershon connection. Mine goes back to the Henri Marchand who came to this country in the 1600's and changed the name to Henry Mershon. Theoretically, all Mershons are somewhat related.
If you are still pursuing the Hilliard and/or Mershon research, you're more than welcome to contact me directly at Smadhatter13@comcast.net
Best regards,
Shon B.
Obituary

To anyone looking for a lost Hillyard, This obit was in the Truckee Republican dated July 2, 1902, Truckee, California. He is buried somewhere in our Potter's Field.
1902 –
Truckee Republican, dated July 2, 1902
Fatal Accidents Along Railroad.
A Stranger By the Name of Hillyard Killed by Train.
A stranger whose name appears to have been W.R. Hillyard was struck by a train at Boca Monday night. He was brought here and died without gaining consciousness. It is presumed that he was a passenger on No. 3 going west and had got off the train and in getting back on was in some manner struck. This conclusion is drawn from the fact that he had a a card on his person showing that he was going from Reno to Cisco, where he was to go work as a mucker. When Conductor Steele on freight train 217 came into Boca at 12 o’clock they found the man there and brought him here. Medical aid was summoned but he died while his wounds were being dressed. The only injuries he sustained were about the head, but the right side of his head had been crushed into so as to destroy the tissues of the brain, so there was no possible hope for him
The only clew to his identity was papers he had in his pockets, which showed that his name was W.R. Hillyard. There were letters from two sisters in Ontario, Canada, and his other also lived there. The letters were written from Roaches Point, Lake Limcoe where his sister was visiting so it could not be ascertained in what place they lived
He was a large raw-boned man and between thirty-five and forty years of age. He was dressed as a laborer and had his blankets. He had no money but a few articles, such as any man might carry, in his pockets. He had tax receipts from Nevada State.
Deputy Coroner Wm. McDougald held an inquest over the remains last night but nothing in particular was learned. The jury found that the deceased was unknown and died from causes unknown to them.
The remains were buried today by the county.

Thank you for your message Christina. What an interesting, albeit tragic, story. I'm wondering if there is a family connection but not sure what it is yet. Our Joshua was born 1806 at Fordham and married Ann (b1812, Little Horksley). Their children were Alfred, David, Hannah Henry, Mary Ann and Thomas. My paternal grandmother was the daughter of Harry (Henry) Hillyard. He was born 1851/2. She was born 1889 at East Donyland.
Can we correspond by email?
Hi Heather
Some time has past since your post so this may not be news - however some info on the Stanway Hillyards - William & Joshua (brothers) were working in a Stanway gravel pit in 1857 when there was a collapse. William was half buried and Joshua tried to dg him out. However, a further collapse buried William deeper. Joshua had to summon help and it was nearly an hour before William could be extricated. When found, he was still in a standing position, his spade firmly clenched in his hand. Death was due to suffocation. The inquest on William, a 45-year-old married man with four children, returned a verdict of Accidental Death.
Copford-born William left a widow, 38-year-old Elizabeth, and four young children, Elizabeth, George, James and Joseph. At the time of the accident, the couple lived in the boarded cottages at the top of Hart Hill, directly opposite the White Hart. Elizabeth remained a widow and continued to live there. Working as a charwoman, she raised the children on her own. She moved to Greenstead sometime before 1891 to live with her son Joseph and his family and died in 1898 aged 75, forty-one years after her husband.
Regards Christina
Hi Bruce,

I'd advise against giving your birthdate in any postings on the net, just in case of identity theft. It's okay for those who are deceased.

I'm not sure how much more you know.
George was born 9 February 1847 according to the 1901 census. His wife Sarah was born 28 November 1855. They are listed as Hillard in the census, but they show son James with the correct birthdate. The 1881 census have a Christena living with them who was born in 1809. I would presume she is George's mother. A Moore Hillyard is possible a brother. that could also be Christena's maiden name. So possibly a search for a Christina Moore marrying a Hillyard might lead to something.

This might be interesting for you to read
http://www.lisburn.com/books/huguenots/huguenots_2.html

although your Hillyards were from the south, it mentions time frames etc for Hueguenots going to Ireland.

There are other Hilliard's in the Caledon area.
see
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

In that case the father is English, with an Irish wife. So they may or may not be related.

There is also a James Hillyard (of Irish extraction) born 16 October 1842 in the area. He could be a brother of George.

If I come across anything that may link to your Hillyard's I'll post it back here.

He married 24 Oct. 1848 Susanna/Susan Hall daughter of Nathan & Sarah (Wilkerson?) Hall. William & Susan Hilyard lived in Duck Creek, Kent Co., DE. I have long suspected that Christopher & Levisa were his parents. Can you confirm this?

I would love to exchange info!
This seems to be a very prolific and large family, with the same names (such as John, Charles, Benjamin, Thomas, Mary, Margaret, Martha, Ann, and William) used time and time again.

With the help of a quick visit to the Delaware Archives, I have been able to trace back to a Christopher Hillyard, born approx. 1790, may have served in the War of 1812, died approximately in 1860. His children were (that I have been able to determine) Robert Cook, born 1824; Martha, born 1827; William, Ann, Simon, and Christopher Columbus, born 1858/9.

Do these names ring a bell with anyone? I have traced back as far as I can right now, as well as tracing down from the original John Hillyard who first settled in Duck Creek. I am willing to share what information I can.

Thanks!

Martha Hillyard?

I'm hoping that someone here might be able to help me. My g3 grandmother was Martha Hillyard, born in 1823 or 1827 in Delaware, depending on which census year you trust. She married Alexander Killan in 1846. I believe she had a brother Robert C. Hillyard. I am trying to find her parents, who were also born in Delaware. It has always been stated in my family that we are related to the Hillyards that built Woodburn in Dover, Delaware; however I have not had any luck yet with finding a connection.

I would be willing to share what information I've been able to piece together.

Thanks!

Irish Hillyards/Hilliards

I know Hillyard is a Huguenot name and would like to eventually trace my line back to France if possible.

There don't appear to be very many Hillyards in Ireland. Mine are from the Athlone/Dublin area, and I have noticed some in Northern Ireland as well. It is possible that the two groups are related, but I will wait until I find proof before looking at the Northern Ireland ones.

I have been through the St Mary's church records from Athlone and recorded any Hillyard/Hilliard I found. There were also some real estate records on the microfilm which had some useful information.

I have Francis Bird Hillyard chr. 8 February 1828 at St Mary's, Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland parents John & Margaret. The Bird does not appear in the christening record, however does show on his son Francis's death record.

I found real estate record mentioning an Alexander Hillyard of Edgeworthtown and Kenagh. Alexander had 3 sons, William Francis & John. I believe the John is Francis's father. Right age location etc. His brother Francis married an Ann Holden of Moate, West Meath, Ireland on 6 May 1811.

If anyone is looking for Irish Hillyard/Hilliard's I would be interested in exchanging information. The two spelling were used in different places and I think it has to do with who was writing the record. Later records for my Francis all use the Hillyard spelling.

I believe the brother William ended up in Stonehouse, Devon, England. He was in the British army as was my Francis. There was an army base near Athlone.

Hi
Saw your message just after reading another mentioning Whiteside on this site. Have pasted it here:

Commander GW Hillyard
Author: Nicola Lockley Date: 15 Nov 2003 7:06 PM GMT
Classification: Query
Post Reply | Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message
We are searching for information or relatives of Commander George Whiteside Hillyard (b. 1864 Hanwell, Middlesex). He was a naval cadet aboard the HMS Bacchante in 1881, serving with Prince Albert and Prince George. He later helped to create the All England Tennis Club, and was a distinguished player - winning an Olympic gold medal. He also played cricket and was an accomplished golfer. He became Secretary of the All England Club in 1907, until 1924. He married six-time Wimbledon champion Blanche Bingley in 1887, and had at least two children - Jack and Marjorie. The family lived in Thorpe Satchville, Leicestershire, between 1895 and 1925, and then moved to Pulborough, Sussex, where he died in 1943.

Hope this is of some help to you.
