Thanks for that! It does sound likely.
I met some Hinches in the Midlands there (Tullamore) but they said we weren't related. He was the son of Fenton, whose father was Fenton. He said he'd heard they might have been Scottish. Nice folks, but that's all I got! Lots of people there aren't looking for their ancestors; they already know they're buried in Ireland.

Thanks Maura
We always had the story that the Hinchs came from Co. Clare as a gentleman by the name of William Hinch from Michigan U.S. had done some research back in the 80's and had entered this info on his genealogical story and sent them out to family members. My mother was a Hinch and of course received one of the copies.I went to Ireland in 2005 hoping to further research into the Hinch name in the area. I came up with nothing but the trip to Clare was well worth the time as to scenery and the people I met.
Last year I found a website on Wicklow and saw John,my greatgrandfather's name as well as his sisters on a database for Wicklow and the Fitzwilliam estates. This now makes sense with Richard Hinch and Doyle as parents.
Since you are a direct relative I would like to hear all that you might have on the family if you would be interested and if you might have or know someone who might have photos of any family members in Ireland or of those that emmigrated.
Thanks for the response.
Lawrence

Hello Tamara! After so many years I am on the road again to find out more of William E. Hinch. You did not tell me how your William E. Hinch fits into your family. If you know let me know and maybe there would be some link that would refresh my memory of what I have learned. I did find out that a descendant of his had a marina in Wildwood Crest, NJ. I phoned him and he wanted me to come see him and his family. I did not for many situations at the time prohibited to go. When I could he had passed away. Have you had any luck? I know you had alot on your plate. Flo Magee

He was born about 1861. Would you know if the Missouri Asa Kelim is related to the Kentucky Asa Kelim. I think the Missouri Kelim's are from Kentucky. I am Jim Kelim.

Thank you for your quick and very helpful reply. Is it possible that Samuel Hinch Sr. was born in 1742? It would seem more likely. We are descended from his daughter Margaret and Theophilius Williams. So it would seem that her mother was NOT Charity Humble Hinch's daughter. Margaret was born about 1770 which would make him still pretty young (18) to have children, especially if she isn't the 1st of his offspring. More research to be done.

I can't answer the 1752 dob for Samuel as I have it unproven but Charity's dob is proven by her obit so most I guess figure they were born in 1750s...acc/to her obit

OBIT Charity Hinch
Missouri Intelligencer 5 Mar 1831. Microfilm at State Historical Society of Missouri, Columbia Missouri
Departed this life in Howard County,Missouri the 31st of January 1831 Mrs. Charity Hinch, widow of Samuel Hinch, in the 75th year of her age. She was a professor of the Christian religion and had been united to the Methodist church for the last 40 years of her life. "Her conversion to God at an early period, taught her by the manner of its accomplishment, to ascribe her salvation wholly to Grace, and induced her to exchange the pleasures of the world for the permanent enjoyment of Religion." It may be properly said of her that having long experienced that state of Christian perfection which it is the privilege of the faithful to enjoy, her love towards God became so refined as she advanced in years, that her removal from earth to heaven was little more than a gentle transition. Nothing but a belief that she is now in the enjoyment of perfect happiness could compensate her relatives and friends for the loss they have sustained by her removal from this world.
)))))))))
not sure where you got the dob for Sam Jr but he was certainly not born in 1765 they were not even married then.
they mrd 1774. PERRY, his wife Emily AUSTIN BRYAN PERRY and other in the circuit court of Washington County, Missouri, in 1827. Craig won in the circuit court, but PERRY appealed to the Supreme Court and got a reversal. The case file is at the Missouri State Archives. The following deposition is contained in the case file.
From other information, it is known that the deponent, Theophilus WILLIAMS, was married to Margaret HINCH (Jefferson County, KY, Marriage Book 1, page 10, April 7, 1790, with consent from her father, Samuel HINCH), who was the first child named in the will of Samuel HINCH in
Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri (Upper Louisiana Territory at the time of the will in 1807,
Will Book A, pages 1-2). George CRAIG was married to Charity HINCH (no marriage record known), the fourth child named in Samuel HINCH'S will. Samuel HINCH'S wife at the time of his death was Charity (HUMBLE) HINCH (no marriage record known.)
The deposition by Theophilus WILLIAMS transcribed below, states that Margaret (HINCH)
WILLIAMS and Charity (HINCH) CRAIG were half-sisters. The most likely way this could be true
is that Samuel HINCH was married twice. The mother of Margaret (and perhaps also of Polly, who
were married Robert HINKSON -- Samuel's will treats them different than it treats the other children) would be an unknown woman; the mother of Charity (and probably Samuel Jr., Uriah, Michael andJohn Wessley) would be Charity HUMBLE. To my knowledge, there is no other evidence for Samuel having been married twice, but the evidence of the deposition is very clear.
signed: Darrell JACKSON Lohman, Missouri March 2003
”James F. PERRY et. al. vs George CRAIG, Case Record, 1827 - 1834, Missouri Supreme Court,
Records Group 600, Missouri State Archives, Box 107, Folder 1, Pages 22b-23, Deposition of Witness on behalf of the complaintant, Theophilus WILLIAMS, October 29, 1829, Potosi, transcribed.
"Question by Plaintiff: Mr. WILLIAMS you're [sic] acquainted with William HINKSON of this county. If so state how long you have known him. Are you acquainted with George CRAIG, how long have you known him? Whether you know of any difference heretofore existing between
CRAIG and HINKSON how long that difference has existed and whether you have heard said
HINKSON express himself about said CRAIG.
Answer: I am acquainted with William HINKSON and have known him about twenty or thirty years
and I have known George CRAIG about seventeen or eighteen years during that time, I have
been intimately acquainted with said HINKSON and CRAIG also -- as to difference existing
heretofore, I know there was -- and I think it took place about eighteen hundred and eight at
at the new diggings. How long the difference continued, I know not. I have heard Mr. HINKSON
say many hard harsh things about Mr. CRAIG for some years back. But nothing within three or four years last past.
Question by same: Do you know where said HINKSON now resides -- if so, please state -- and if
you know what land it is and how long he has resided there., Whether you have [p.23] not
understood that Mr. HINKSON is a tenant at will of Mr. PERRY ---- [indicates that he is] ----
Question by same: Will you state what is Mr. HINKSON'S general character for truth and
integrity ---
Answer: Mr. HINKSON is my neighbor and I don't want to say anything on that subject. But
through his neighborhood, he is not considered to be a man of truth.
Question by defendant, Samuel PERRY: In what relation do you stand to Mr. CRAIG or are you
connected to him in any way?
Answer: A family connection, our wives are half-sisters." [spoken by Theophilus WILLIAMS]
Changes have been made in this website to reflect changes in our knowledge regarding
Samuel HINCH'S family due to this discovery by Darrell JACKSON.

I have to comment again on the statement that the Hinches were peaceful and didn't get into the courts. The Hinches may have been peaceful, but that didn't keep them out of the courts. The heirs of Samuel Hinch were sued several times over the course of several years concerning land titles in Kentucky and promises Samuel had made to his son-in-law Robert Hinkson. These suits occurred in the Territorial Superior Court of Missouri and eventually in circuit courts. The heirs eventually prevailed; the suits were essentially withdrawn by the plaintiffs. But there was a lot of activity. And George Craig, who married Charity Humble (Samuel's daughter) was sued and himself brought law suits over a period of twenty years. These suits reveal a great deal about him, and several things about the Hinches, his in-laws.>Darrell Jackson

November 1745 - Samuel HINCH was appointed to survey highway by Augusta County,
Virginia Court. (A. LIVINGSTON)

1773 "Samuel was the first HINCH in Kentucky, coming with Isaac Hite's survey party
[Isaac Hite's Diary] who was part of Bullitt's survey party in 1773. Returned to Fort Dunmore, Virginia, [later Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania, now Pittsburg after boundary line was settled between VA & PA]. and became a surveyor of a ?. May have been the Samuel HINCK who is listed in George Rogers Clark militia [Thomas Harrod's company] who settled at Corn Island, later to become Louisville 1780. Samuel and John were in Louisville early 1780's but either there were two Samuels or went to ???nedin Co., then to Bourbon County by 1787 when Bourbon County was formed. Later to Howard County, Missouri."
Also in Hite's Diary: Wednesday, 1 September, 1773, -"stayed in Kentuck and settled with company
in afternoon and went out with Samuel HINCH and killed a fat bullellow'. (Victor's note---"That's copied as I received it. There is more in the Virginia court records in Pennsylvania.--by Crumine.")

[in between are many land transactions done by Samuel before he left KY to go to MO-if you want those write me personally I will send them]

1800 It has come to our attention that there are some who believe Samuel never completed the journey from Kentucky to Ste.Genevieve but instead, died in route. We have the following note from one of our researchers, Darrell Jackson, and it is as follows:

JacksonDa@aol.com 9-24-2006 Regarding the alleged death of Samuel Hinch on his way to Ste. Genevieve
Missouri I cite the following two items:
(1) Harrison Co. KY Deed Book 1, page 545, sale of land on June 7, 1800, by "Samuel Hintch of the Province of Louisiana of the Spanish Dominions. This shows that Samuel (and presumably Charity) had left Kentucky and were in Louisiana by 1800 (later Upper Louisiana Territory, later Missouri Territory).
(2) Ste. Genevieve Co. MO Will Book A, pages 1-2, will of Samuel Hinch, dated April 30, 1807, probated August 1, 1807. This shows that Samuel was in Ste. Genevieve and alive in 1807, seven years after he left Kentucky. There is other evidence of Samuel's activity in the "Spanish Dominions," such as his receiving a grant of land, but the two I have cited are sufficient proof that he did not die on the way to Ste. Genevieve. I hope her other information is more reliable. Darrell Jackson

1803 - Spring - When William Hinkson settled on Obrazeau Creek in Ste. Genevieve District in the Spring of 1803, he had a wife, three children, and two slaves Brazeau bottom and creek, also known as "Obrazo" creek, is in the southeast corner of present Perry County, Mo. The first settler in Brazeau bottom was George A. Hamilton who opened a farm in 1797 fronting on the Mississippi River. Adjoining and west of Hamilton, William Hinkston had a grant in the uplands and also not far from him, Gen. Ben. Harrison who moved into the district from New Madrid. Other settlers in Brazeau bottom and at Brazeau creek were Robert Hinckson, Samuel Hinch, Charles Duncaster

2 April 1806 - Charles DUNCASTER of New Bourbon District, Territory of Louisiana, appointed William HINKSON of the same place, his lawful attorney, to transact all business in securing land he might be entitled to by virtue of an improvement in the District, to sell the same, etc., William HINKSON holding an obligation given by DUNCASTER to Robert HINKSON for the said tract. Witnesses - George A. HAMILTON, Samuel HINCH, John TODD. Proved on 5 November 1806 by HAMILTON and TODD before Samuel HINCH, Justice of the Peace for Ste. Genevieve District. (From the Ste. Genevieve County Deed Book B, page 525).

Samuel Hinch is referenced in folder 65, which contains Leonard’s correspondence from 1833.
Why does every Hinch researcher I see say that Samuel was born in 1752? If this were true, he would've only been 13 yrs. old when Samuel Jr. was born in 1765. Where is there any proof that he was 55 yrs. old at the time of his death? Is there any documentation for this death and where would I find it?

Do you have any information on the Kellem that married your Hinch? Asa Kelim is my gg grandfather and I live close to where he lived when was in the civil war. Thanks.

I'm trying to find out more information about John Williamson who was born in Turriff,Aberdeenshire, Scotland abt 1884. He emigrated to Canada 1908-10 and returned to visit his mother in Turriff in 1922. It is possible he was in BC for a while. I believe he was a farmer and had something to do with breeding horses. His mother was Mary and he died in the 1960s. He had a daughter with Jeannie Burr in Fyvie before he left for Canada.
Thanks.

Charles Hinsch was my grandfather. I do have quite a bit of info on this family. I would be glad to share.

Michigan Hinchs -part 2

For those looking at the Hinches from Camden near Tamworth Ontario, many who have emmigrated to the U.S. I may have found the ship and date of arrival at Quebec. I have always looked for Hinch or Hinchey in the databases with no wild cards in the search but after coming upon the site Immigrants from Gross-Ile (which was the quarantine area for ships coming into Quebec during the famine), Library and Archives Canada Site, I tried Hinchy and under deaths at sea we get:
1847, Hinchy Elizabeth, category Immigrant - Age 14 yrs. Name of ship Progress, Port of departure-New Ross, Country- Ireland, date of arrival July 14, 1847- Reference- from the Return of names and ages of emmigrants who died on ship board previous to arrival at Quebec during the season of 1847. The Morning Chronicle (Quebec)1847/12/10.

I cross referenced the ship to the Transcriber's Guild website and saw no record of passengers but a departure date of May 5th and an arrival date of July 10 from New Ross to Quebec. Passenger total- 555, Captain Mabel, registered to Tibbits & Co. The government Immigration Office on June 7th ,1847 reported that the Progress left New Ross with 554 passengers for Quebec on May 5th 1847. (this is a slow passage as I compare to Brigs leaving at about the same time from New Ross for Quebec. maybe there was a layover?? The Olive tree website has the Progress docking at New Brunswick in 1847 with passengers.I checked the passenger list and no Hinch,Hinchy etc.Elizabeth should have been travelling with brother John and sisters Catherine, Bridget and Mary. It is not uncommon for a ship to make two trips a year.Perhaps the Olive tree site mentions a later or earlier voyage for the Progress of that year as a date is not given.
The year of arrival is mentioned in at least two histories of the family and they were not fleeing from the famine but from taxes at the time.
They originated from Knock James,on the road from Tulla to Gort, Co. Clare, Ireland.I suspect that Elisabeth (Bessie) died from cholera on the passage which was an agonizing way to die, and a loss that her brother and sisters carried throughout their lives.
Lawrence
On. canada

I am searching for Honora Hinch who married Martin Callaghan before 1848. The family lived in Poulnamuca, Cahir parish till about 1860 then moved to Clonmel. There are 4 children with baptismal records: Laurence (1848), John Patrick (1852), Honora (1854) and Honora (1864). Martin went by the surnames Callinan, Callenan, Callihan, Callahan, and Callaghan. He died in the Clonmel Workhouse in 1886. I would like to find out when and where Honora and Martin were married.

Regards,
Margaret

This is to announce the Hinch Family Tree DNA project. It is open to any Hinch or variant and our goal is to help the various families find their common origins.

The project home page is:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/hinch/index.html

Many of the US Hinchs seem to have arrived in Kentucky prior to it’s statehood and dispersed westward from there, but, we are interested in connecting to all Hinch families worldwide.
Only males have Y-chromosomes, so only male STEVENSON/etc. can participate. If you are female, you can have a male STEVENSON/etc. relative submit a sample for your line. To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known STEVENSON/etc., as a pedigree (excluding living persons).
Requirements:A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father’s Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father’s father’s father’s…) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test and participate in an mtDNA project.
Questions?
Not sure if this is a situation that applies to you?
