It was Thomas christened 7.3.1798 died 1871, married 18.8.1729 to Hannah Goodsell. He was one of the 12 children of William Hinkley (5.9.1764-4.12.1840 of Cranbrook) married to Hannah Westmore. He was the miller from 1830-1867. The mill has been restored to working order and is fascinating. Some Hinkley's buried at St Dunstans Church too which is a short walk including his son Joseph and wife Esther. Village of Teynham in Kent also contains the 'Hinkley stained glass window': The north chancel is called the Hinkley chancel, from a family of that name, one of whom, John Hencliff, of Tenham, died in 1463, possessed of an estate in this parish, called Jonathan's garden, which he devised to his two sons, on condition that they should glaze a long window on the north head of this church. There was also a Hinkley Water mill in that village.

The immigrant Samuel HINCKLEY and wf. Sarah SOULE and children came in April 1635 in the Hercules of Sandwich, Kent, to New England. Listed were Samuel of Tenterden, wf. Sara[h], ch. Susan, Sara, & Mary, & kinswoman Elizabeth HINCKLE, per Peter Wilson Coldham's Complete Book of Emigrants. I do not know why Thomas is not on this list.
I am looking for information on Aaron C. Hinckley, b. abt 1865 in Rutland, VT and d. 17 Mar 1938 in Bristol, CT. He married first, Mary Cronan on 16 Oct 1888 in Rutland, VT she d. 30 Jun 1898 in Rutland. They had at least two children, William Aaron (1891-1891) and Ellen Elizabeth (abt 1891 to aft. 1930). Aaron married 2nd Mary F. Kennedy probably abt. 1899. She died 29 Jan 1965 in Bristol, CT. While in Connecticut Aaron was involved in the hotel and bar business. He apparently owned and ran the Commercial Hotel in Naugatuck, CT from 1909-1912. He later owned a saloon at 436 Main St in New Britain, CT from 1912 until at least 1919. He later apparently ran a lunchroom/diner at 25 Valley in the Bristol, CT area. His daughter Ellen graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 1913.
John Swasey Childs was a career military man. He was in WWI, but I don't know where he was stationed. I will be looking into this. I got word and records that Margaret died in April of 1919 at Ft. Bayard. This is good, since he married my grandmother, Mildred Luella Cobb in 1920 and I couldn't find a record of a divorce. He eventually divorced my grandmother somewhere around 1938.

The short answer: Margaret Ella HINCKLEY (11 Je. 1882, Blue Hill, Hancock, ME - 19 Apr. 1919, Ft. Bayard, NM) m. 29 Nov. 1916, ME, John S. CHILDS, b. She was daughter of Eugene Frank HINCKLEY, listed as Frank E., 3 in 1860, son of Benjamin Franklin HINCKLEY.

The immigrant of the HINCKLEY line was Samuel HINCKLEY, b. Harrietsham, Kent, who migrated from Tenterden, Kent, in the Hercules, in 1635.

Google Fort Bayard for its history. Pancho Villa was raiding in that vicinity in 1916.
I am looking into information on what happened to Margaret Hinckley, born about 1891 to Eugene F. Hinckley and was sister to Wallace R. According to Maine Marriage records, she married my grandfather John Swasey Childs 29 Nov 1916 in Augusta, ME. Marriage records also show that he married my grandmother in 1920 and I am unable to find any divorce or death records on Margaret. Any help out there?

Google Pilot.FamilySearch.org and check for Stalham HINCKLEY. Click the icon at the left to see a copy of the 1850 census, Rutland, VT. That shows William on the same page as Stalham/Stolham, et al. Stolham was at Rutland on censuses from 1820 through 1870. He was on a list of the poor of Rutland in 1872 (which I suppose means he didn't leave a will).

My line branched off with the immigrant Samuel's daughter Susannah HINCKLEY (bpt. 6 Nov. 1625, St. Mildred's, Tenterden, Kent) who married John SMITH, 13 Je. 1643. I suppose I'm distantly related because those early families intermarried so much and my DUNHAM, FREEMAN, & STARK families went north from Connecticut before heading west.

Hi Linda, -- sorry for the delay. Holidays have a way of reeordering priorities! I am not sure where you wish to start or go.----------------
Samuel Hinkley (1770-1845), who was married to Mary Brown, had a number of children.Sam owned and operated a ferry between Wolfe Island,ON,Canada and Cape Vincent,NY on St. Lawrence River (upstate NY). They had two sons and several daughters. One son, Rodney, headed west as you know, to Van Buren Co., MI. The other, Coleman, stayed.HE started the ferry to Kingston, ON.
The first ferry from Kingston to Wolfe Island was built in 1802 from crude pine boards cut on the island. These were held together by wooden spikes and powered by wind or oar.
In 1857 the first lead of a ferry was granted to Coleman Hinkley, who built the first ferry Old Pierrepont. This boat did not stay on the run long, and was succeeded by the Gaselle in 1864, then by the Watertown in 1872. The St. Lawrence Steamboat Co, under the Folger Bros. bought out Hinckley control of the ferry, with the new Pierrepont and continued until July 1, 1904.

THE WATERTOWN HERALD. SATURDAY, JULY 1, 1899
Captain Coleman Hickley, Sr., of Cape Vincent, died on Sunday morning at the age of ninety years. He was born on Wolfe Island, and has spent his whole life on the lakes and the river. He was a skilled navigator and pilot, and was always a thoroughly honorable, upright man.
----------------
A daughter, Emeline, stayed on at Wolfe Island (which still has the ferries (run by the province now), AND is the site of a massive wind turbine farm).
Here is background on Emeline:
WARREN GODFREY & EMELINE HINCKLEY
(With Permission:)
From the book "Back of Sunset"
By Michael Dawber
Copyright 2000
Central Frontenac Township
Copies available for sale at the township office:
http://www.centralfrontenac.com/#contactinformation

The crossroads village of Godfrey has had many names and many different roles in its long history. When the hamlets first post office was granted in the fall of 1854, the name given was Deniston. Irishman William dennison was the first postmaster, and the probable source of the name. When the Kingston & Pembroke Railway reached this place, the company called its station Bedford, as it was the closest railway point to Bedford Township. To many locals, however, the most familiar name was Iron Ore Junction, as tons of iron ore were shipped from nearby mines through this point. Ultimately, the community settled on Godfrey, honoring a family with deep roots in the community.

Warren Godfrey was born in 1800 in New York State. At an early age, his family resettled to Wolfe Island, opposite Kingston, and it was there that Godfrey met Emeline Hinckley, the American-born daughter of a Loyalist family. In the 1830s, Emeline and Warren struck out for what was then the outer limit of active settlement in Frontenac Country, choosing to settle just beyond the Hinchinbrooke-Portland line. Their farm, in Hinchinbrookes 3rd Concession, would ultimately become the site of the community of Godfrey. Several other families had also chosen this corner of Hinchinbrooke, including Bryan and Mary Nefcy, Adam McMahon, Edward and Margaret Kelly, Elizabeth and James Hickey, Elizabeth and John Vandake, John and Mary Alton, and Isabella and John McKnight. John McKnight is sometimes credited as Hinchinbrookes first settler, though according to a petition written in 1851, Godfrey claimed that honor for himself. All these families-mostly Irish, largely Catholic or Anglican-had the good fortune to find some of Central Frontenacs best farmland. Indeed, the only Class 1 farmland in the entire township is in this rolling corner of Hinchinbrooke. After Warren and Emeline eventually relocated to Olden Township (where we will meet them again in Mountain Grove), their son Chester inherited the original homestead, with wife Margaret Kennedy, Chester farmed this land for many years, eventually giving way to son Coleman in the late 1870s. By that time, the village had begun to take shape around the intersection of the Frontenac road-begun in 1854 by Warren Godfrey and his crews-and the Mast Road, which dates back into the early 1800s. The community had gained a log school , situated on the farm of James and Julia Hill and called Hills School in consequence. The old log school would be replaced by a frame building in 1901, and local students continued to study there until the school was destroyed by fire in 1950. By 1872, local Methodists had constructed Bethel Church on the Mast Road. Nominally, at least, the church was Primitives Methodist. A small graveyard was also established on land donated by John and Melissa Campsall. Today, one can still see their tombstones there. Bethel was first served by Mr.J.G. Mallory. Old records show that circuit riders from 1888 served Verona, Bellrock, Desert Lake, High Falls, Bethel, Kennedys Hall, Crow Lake in the Parham area, and Deyos Corners, previous to 1890 known as Maddens Mill.

Such family names as Campsall, Kennedy, Freeman, Mcknight and Peter were noted. The K&P had built its station on Chester Godfreys land. After the turn of the century, tons of feldspar from mines in Bedford left for the market through Bedford station. (Fledspar-which included microline, sandidine, orthoclase, and adularia-are used in ceramics and enamels.) The Howes family had begun its general store and would continue in the business for almost 100 years. The store became an Imperial Oil Dealership in 1885, possibility the first in Frontenac County. The store also housed the local post office, renamed from Deniston to Godfrey in April 1878. Two Howes men, Richard B. and R. Joseph, ran the office continuously between 1885 and 1960. Godfrey boomed. Three hotels did a rushing business with the miners and the travelers from the trains. The railway built cattle pens, next to the Howes store, where anything could be purchased.

The Islands: Biographies: Wolfe Island Bio 12
Return to The Islands Main Page
Copyright (©) 1999-2004 Jennifer Hoeltzel-Wylie.
