I hope you are still receiving messages. Can you tell me anything abount Helena? According to my records Helena Burns married Ernest C. Hincks. Do you have any records regarding her? I wonder if you are going by a married name rather than her maiden name. Helena is pretty unusual. Hoping to hear from you.

Hi! This is very interesting. My GGrndfthr was a Hinks but I have tentatively traced back to a Thomas Hincks b. 1640 Twycross, Leicestershire, England. Could he be a relation to your Hincks? The name changed to Hinks abt 1718 with a Henry Hinks in Norton-Juxta, Twycross, Leicestershire, England. The family (son of Henry) immigrated in 1745 to Massachusetts. Thanks for any info. Bonnie

I have NO additional information. I am just passing along information that may be useful.

HINCKS, WILLIAM B.

Rank and organization: Sergeant Major, 14th Connecticut Infantry. Place and date: At Gettysburg, Pa., 3 July 1863. Entered service at: Bridgeport, Conn. Birth: Bucksport, Me. Date of issue: 1 December 1864. Citation: During the highwater mark of Pickett's charge on 3 July 1863 the colors of the 14th Tenn. Inf. C.S.A. were planted 50 yards in front of the center of Sgt. Maj. Hincks' regiment. There were no Confederates standing near it but several were Iying down around it. Upon a call for volunteers by Maj. Ellis, commanding, to capture this flag, this soldier and 2 others leaped the wall. One companion was instantly shot. Sgt. Maj. Hincks outran his remaining companion running straight and swift for the colors amid a storm of shot. Swinging his saber over the prostrate Confederates and uttering a terrific yell, he seized the flag and hastily returned to his lines. The 14th Tenn. carried 12 battle honors on its flag. The devotion to duty shown by Sgt. Maj. Hlncks gave encouragement to many of his comrades at a crucial moment of the battle.
Hi,

My g-g-g grandmother is Eliza Hin(c)ks b app 1805. She married Richard T Swan in Baltimore in 1825. I recently received a death record for my
g-g-grandfather, John, her son. While I had seen on a census record he declared his mother was from England his wife Mary (Eberhart) gave conflicting info for the death record.

According to her Richard Swan was born in England and Eliza Hin(c)ks was from New Orleans. Eliza's father was Thomas. He was the sexton of the First Baptist Church in Baltimore--a job which later fell to Richard and then his son George.

Does anyone know anything about this family? Thanks.

Gloria

Hincks in Retford/Lutterworth

I have found a little further back than before for my line,

Thomas Hincks married Ellen Mathison and they had three children, Amelia born in Lutterworth, Leics 1856 and Thomas and William in Retford, Notts (1858 and 1860).

Thomas died in 1861 (pre census) aged 48, and the family were found in Retford for the 1861 census, but I cannot find anything further, even their marriage as yet, and there's no Thomas of the right age in Lutterworth in 1851.

So, does this ring any bells with people?!

I live in Boston; born and raised in Hartford, Ct. Think I may have spoken to you on the phone, Brenda, some years ago. Don't know if I'm a product of John Hincks and Elizabeth Fryer. I can go back to the Civil War, though. My great, great grandfather was William Bliss Hincks, who was from Bucksport, Me and won the Congressional Medal of Honor for stealing the Confederate flag at Gettysburg. I believe he moved his family to Bridgeport, Ct. after the war, where that line of the family lived into @ the 1930s. My grandfather, John Morris Hincks, settled in Farmington, Ct. after WWII.

Hi, my Hincks came to the USA in 1670 from England. Is ur last name spelt Hinks or Hincks? There was a Hinks that went to Canada in the 1800's. My, John Hincks made a stopp in Canada from England to deliver a load of goods and the ship he was on was blown of course and they ended up in NH. He stayed here. I believe i can trace him to England and have written to the college of Coat of Arms to see if they had anything. They came up with the same family over there that I did.
Tell me ur line and I will check my records to see if maybe u are from the same family.
Best wishes,
Brenda Hincks-M

Hi just read u r reply to my messages. Brigadier General Edward Winslow Hincks was my g grandfathers brother. He was from Maine and died in Cambridge Ma. My g-grandfather too care of him in the end. My Hincks family stayed in Maine. The first Hincks, John came to the US from England in 1670 and settled in NH his son Samuel lived in NH and Boston, his son Samuel lived on Cape Cod before coming to Bucksport Maine in 1780. They are buried in Bucksport. I go to the cemetery in Bucksport on the in May each year. There were sons and a few daughters that followed their parents to Maine. The only son that left was John hincks who married a Blodgett. This family ended up in Ct.
Could u send me the line of ur family?
Brigadier General Edward Winslow Hincks had two children, both died. One was Anson Burlingame Hincks, died in MD. His first wife died soon after and he married a Elizabeth Pierce and they live on Battle St. in Cambridge MA. They had one daughter named Betsey Hincks and she died when a firecracker caught her dress on fire 4th of Jul. on her way home from school at the age of 18. Really sad. They didn't have any other children. Her picture hangs in the College in Cambridge, Ma.
I hope to hear from u very soon. Sorry it took so long to reply.
I usually check this site but never have messages.
I am workin on the Hincks family and have done well and hope to enter all familys that do reply. I hope to have a book within a couple of years. Just holdin out for more family members of this family that reply.

Best Regards,
Brenda Hincks-M
