Re: Nicholas Hancher 1721...

I was also bothered by this same fact.

I assume you are referring to "The King's Passengers to Maryland and Virginia". One thing that bothered me is that Nicholas Henshaw is listed under "Surrey" and "Nicholas Hanshaw" is listed under Unidentified, and both are flagged with a note that says they were not found on the Landing Certificate.

Another thing that has bothered me is that the voyage supposedly started in Oct 1720 and ended in May 1721 according to Coldham's books. Even back then this would have been too long... over 6 months.

Do you know if there were voyages of the Gilbert in Oct 1720 and Jan 1721?

I found this document which seems to have to do with a voyage in Oct 1720.

http://www.immigrantships.net/v3/1700v3/gilbert17201000.html

And I have run across another document for a voyage of the Gilbert in January 1721. That document can be found at:

http://www.immigrantships.net/v3/1700v3/gilbert17210131.html

If there really was a voyage in Jan 1721, then it is more likely that one that ended in May 1721 than one that started in Oct 1720.

Neither of these documents mention Nicholas at all.

As to your other question, the earliest record I've ever seen for Nicholas was his marriage record at Christ Church in 1726.

I have been following this discussion about Nicholas for over 10 years and have never seen any proof that he was the convict on the Gilbert or even that a convict on the Gilbert was actually named Nicholas Henshaw/Hanshaw and if he was that he actually made it to America.

I would agree that Nicholas was not the son of John Henshaw as claimed by many, but I think saying he was the convict is a little premature.

I would love to discuss this more with you if you want.

Thanks,

Bill

Nicholas Hancher 1721...

I was looking in the Complete book of Emigrants in Bondage (listed as a source for the Nicholas Hancher/Hinshaw/Henshaw lineage) and found some interesting things. First off, the passenger list for the Gilbert has been transcribed and is available online and does not contain a Henshaw/Hinshaw or Hancher. In the book on emigrants in bondage it did. I found another book by the same author that listed ships coming to MD in that time period and it stated that the ship Gilbert had a Nicholas Henshaw on board but did not have him listed on the Landing Certificate. The landing certificate was how the captains and investors were paid on return to England.

Three choices here. 1) DOA since chattel were commodities that were accounted for and not necessarily recorded if died in passage (burial at sea without ceremony). 2) Jumped ship and deserted the bondage time to be served (on average 7 years) to a big city such as Philadelphia or NYC. 3) Error in recording them on the landing certificate (not likely since it's the way to get paid...but possible)...

On the third option of not listed, if he did become slave labor to a planter in those days only about 5% ever went on to own land and only slightly higher % of those who came over even lived more than a season or two. He was supposed to have come over in 1721 on the gilbert and then fast forward to 1726, he gets married in the Christ Church (Church of England, the country he was deported from?) in Philadelphia to a Quaker, Rebecca Smith. For indentured servitude there was an option to buy out your contract early, but not for convicts. So how could he have a served sentence shorter than the average of 7 years? On the jump ship option most likely there would have been an ad in the MD gazette or the VA gazette looking for their property. None found in my searches FWIW.

I realize there are records for Nicholas Hancher from 1726 on in records by the Quakers and later land and tax records. But before nothing? Anyone have anything before 1726 in the Colonies? Has anyone gone to the records beyond the Old Bailey online (trials in Surrey are in a different not online accessible area but still in the PRO) to see what the crime was he was sentenced to Transportation?

Looking for marraige to Everet or Evast M. Hinshaw to Ruth B

I am the granddaughter of Maurice Layton Hinshaw. On the Hinshaw association page I saw that Everet was married to Mabel Clare Beckett. This was not Maurice's mother. His mother was a woman named Ruth whom apparently Everet married sometimes before 1930 either when or before he moved to Washington State. You can see this in the 1930 census. Anyway, the point I am getting to is I cannot find her maiden name or her previous married name. My mother can't give me the correct information because she is getting on in years and can't remember. Does anyone know? Please contact me. Thanks!

Hello. My great-grandmother was a Hinshaw from Randolph County, NC: Her name was Ellen G., her father was William C. and his father was Enoch. The names you have referenced are not familiar to me, but I am sure they are cousins if they are from this area. I can tell you the Hinshaw's who immigrated to Guilford and Randolph Counties, NC were (and some of us still are) Quakers. Some path I can give you an idea of is that I traced some back to Cheshire, England and some immigrated to Northern Ireland before finally immigrating to NC.

Re: DNA and Genealogical Research.

Dick,

The Hinshaw surname has a DNA Project Group on the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) web site. It is here:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hinshaw/default.aspx#sur....

Anyone can join and submit a DNA sample to be tested and matched with the hundreds of thousands of records in the FTDNA database.

Any submitted sample will also, of course, be matched against the current members of the Hinshaw Surname Group.

It's quite fascinating what a number of us have learned about our likely ancestry as a result of that testing.

In order to trace a surname (such as "Hinshaw/Henshaw/Hanshaw, etc.), the sample submitted must be from a male with that surname (or some derivation of it).

The reason a male DNA sample must be submitted is because males have a "Y" chromosome that is passed from father to son.

It's that chromosome, passed from generation to generation, that allows for the tracing of a surname over the centuries.

The testing produces a probability (such as 90%) that indicates how closely two males are likely to have had a common ancestor within a specified number of generations.

For example, I match another individual with a Hinshaw surname, and the data says that it is 83.49% likely that we had a common ancestor within 4 generations; and it's 97.28% likely that we had a common ancestor with 8 generations.

With that sort of information (often matching people you didn't even know existed), you can then collaborate with those individuals you match to see who the likely common ancestor was. That can lead to some dramatic genealogical finds.

Also living in Wilkes County in 1800 were brothers Jacob and Jonathan .b
William and Jane settled in Salem, Tennesseec (probably "Old Salem", Franklin County, Tennessee).
William Hinshaw was shown in the 1812 Tax List of Franklin County, Tennessee.d
William Hinchey was shown in the 1820 census, Franklin County, Tennessee (page 4):e
3 white males 0-10 (William plus two unidentified)
3 white males 16-26 (Thomas plus two unidentified)
2 white males 26-45 (unidentified)
1 white male 45+ (William)
1 white female 0-10 (unidentified)
2 white females 16-26 (unidentified)
1 white female 45+ (Jane)
In the 1830 census of Franklin County, Tennessee there was no record of William Hinshaw; however the 1830 census does show an unidentified Eli Henshaw in Franklin County (page 17)f [probably Eli Hinshaw #4534]. g Apparently William had moved by 1830 (probably to Illinois - see below).
In the 1840 census, there were no Hinshaws at all in Franklin County, Tennessee (taking into consideration spelling variations).h
In the 1850 census, there was only a single Hinshaw in Franklin County, Nathan Hinshaw #12020 ,i possibly a grandson.g
William Hinchey was shown in the 1835 Illinois state census, living in Morgan County, Illinois (page 65).j Also living in Morgan County in 1835 was an unidentified James Hinckey [Hinchey] (page 25).j The 1830 federal census of Morgan County, Illinois also showed an unidentified Jesse Henshaw (page 36).
In an 1838 court case involving the estate of William's aunt Jane Hinshaw Hadley , William was mentioned as a son of Jane's brother Thomas (William's father), and the court documents imply that William was still then living (as of 1838). The court papers state that he lived in Illinois, although no further records have yet been found on William in Illinois.k
William Hinshaw and family were shown in the 1840 census, Jackson County, Alabama:l
William Hinshaw household:
1 male age 5-10.
1 male age 10-15.
1 male age 15-20.
1 male age 20-30.
1 male age 60-70 (William).
1 female age 5-10.
1 female age 10-15.
1 female age 15-20.
1 female age 20-30.
1 female age 40-50 Living just two houses away in 1840 was son Thomas , and two houses farther was son William .l
Note that the presence of young children in 1840 when William was about 68 years old would suggest that there was another family living in his household, probably an as-yet-unidentified son and/or his children.g
Although it has been reported that William died in Illinois,42 since he was shown over age 60 in Jackson County, Alabama in 1840, it seems more likely that he probably died there.g
Some detective-like reasoning is required to explain William's descendency:
1) Sons William and Thomas are known to be brothers as follows: Thomas had a son George Washington Hinshaw who married Elizabeth Jane Robertson. Her sister, Nancy E. Roberson, married William. In a document written by Nancy, she states that George Washington Hinshaw was both her nephew as well as her brother-in-law, meaning Thomas must be William's brother.m
2) Son Thomas makes the connection to this William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm. Thomas' great-grandson, Thomas Benton Hinshaw , once told his own grandson, Arvil Hinshaw/Henshaw , that his great-grandmother was a Hamm,m referring almost certainly to Jane Hamm, wife of this William Hinshaw. Therefore this William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm are believed to be the parents of both William and Thomas .

SOURCES
36.
Yes, this is "my" William. My line continues through William's son Thomas who was born in North Carolina in 1897 and traveled with the family to Indiana, Salem TN, and Estill Fork, AL.

Before finding the large tree on this family extends back to a William Henshall and Marerie Gyll Henshall who lived in Landcaster Shire England. This William was born circa 1600. Three generations later a member of this line, John Henshall moved to County Antrim, Ireland. John's Great Grandson Jacob Hinshaw moved on to New Garden, Chester Co. PA, then on to North Carolina about 1765. Now here is where a dispute lies. Some folks think "our" William was the son of Thomas Hishaw and Grandson of the Jacob mentioned above. Others dispute that this is the "same" William who was the son of Thomas. Confusing isn't it?

I'm still trying to find my original data that I used to construct this line. I'm certain of the line from William down to my mother, who was a Henshaw, born in Estill Fork, AL in 1914.

John McCollum Green

I don't recognize any of those names, but I do have a Henshaw (Hinshaw), William who was born in Surry County North Carolina circa 1772, married Jane Hamm 3/5/1795, and moved to Richman, Indiana between 1800 and 1811, and in 1812 to Salem, TN for about a year and then on to Estill Fork, AL and the family remained there for six generations. Some are still there. This line can be connected to a line of Henshalls who moved from England to Ireland for a couple of generations before coming to the States, although some dispute the conncetion of William Hinshaw to his father Thomas. I had our family tree beginning with William's son, Thomas, born 1797, the rest I found using information from this research group.

John McCollum Green

Me too! I first sent new information and a correction in June 2007, pictures in September 2007, and have resent all that info three times through 2008 with no success in getting it posted to the website. I even called Jan Hinshaw and left a message asking if she needed help or if everything was OK with her. No response there either. I don't know what else to do, so I started my own site with my ancestors through My Heritage.com. At least my information is correct there and my pictures are posted. I really liked being a part of the Hinshaw Family Association. I hope she gets it together and gets back to working the site.
I realize you posted this three years ago, but I'm hoping you might still have this photo. I'm guessing it's a picture of Mollie Grant Henshaw, daughter of Eugene Henshaw and Susan Chenault. It was probably taken around the time of her marriage to William Anderson Smith, in 1919. I'd love to see a copy, if you still have it--she's my (let's see...) half-great-great-aunt. (Her father's my 3rd great-grandfather by his first wife.) Thank you.

DNA and Genealogical Research.

DNA AND GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH.
Testing the Y Chromosome DNA is the newest cutting edge in Genealogical Research. With the DNA results along with a paper trail, many participants have been able to break through their brick wall; confirm or eliminate a paper trail they have been researching for years; find new DNA cousins to share genealogical lines with and identify a common grandfather; identify where their direct male line originated and where they traveled for 1,000’s of years; and much more.
The Y Chromosome is passed down from father to son(s) for thousands of years virtually unchanged. If someone matches another person’s Y Chromosome DNA, then they are related especially if they share the same surname. The Y Chromosome is junk DNA in that it contains no information as to your physical being such as hair and eye color, height, left or right handed, bald or not bald, possible disease situations, etc. This information comes from other DNA and is not part of the Y Chromosome. All results are strictly confidential.
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is the leading and largest Genealogical Y Chromosome lab in the country. They have 4,576 Surname projects and 113,985 Y DNA records in their data base which is increasing every day. The cost for testing your Y Chromosome is very reasonable and if you test through one of the Surname Projects, there is reduced rate. Their Web Site can be found at: http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx
If you have questions or want more information, please feel free to contact me, Dick Allen at: oldbones1@comcast.net or my daughter, Tammy Valdez at: bonedigger@bigfoot.com
My mother was a Henshaw.
