I believe Dr Vincent Hipolite came from France and was a doctor in Haiti who fled in 1790s to NY and thats where our ancestry came from in USA.He may have had offspring in Haiti that spread to other island.Paris France has several pages of Hipolite's in phone directory I found on internet.

Now that you're kind of caught up, I'll tell you that the only reason I picked up Hipolites is that a brother of your James, named Casimir Vincent Hipolite, married first into a NY family of WELLERs which were also married in with some other of my kin back then. As I said I'm not closely related. Curiosity took me there!

I now wonder if and how your family may be related with the Canary islander bunch. There are more to catch up with, and I don't know more about Andre's earlier family or his own origins. There was also one who showed up at West Point NY at one time.

Hipolite marshmellow creme was from Hipolite family in Misouri or Illinois. I have an original recepe book for it.There is a supreme court case concerning it in 1910-12 about shipping eggs across state lines. Hipolite's won!Now owned by Kraft foods.

Keep on clickin, there is one more very interesting generation. I'd also created a surname HIPOLITE forum for your American family, like this one, but since we began here let's don't lose it just yet.

I would really like to track down more of your earlier generation, especially Patty/Martha, and their daughters.

Bernie, do you remember that marshmallow goo in a jar, Hipolite, and marshmallow peeps? That was your family also. I guess those lines of sweets have all long been bought out by now, heh.

So sorry. I have neglected my emails over the last few months.
My grandfather's name was Innocent Hippolyte (a misnomer if there ever was one!) My father's name was Antoine and his older brother's name was Antonio but for some reason they were both called Antonio! You met my father because my uncle died a quite a few years ago. My father (he was youngest of the siblings) died last year in March and I think only one sister remains.
I am not sure how old your mother is she may know my older siblings better. Greenage,Skinner (Anthony),Bernard and Norma. Contact me directly via email Minorva@hipmc.fsnet.co.uk. I promise I will answer alot sooner. I have another cousin who is also called Lorna Hippolyte and last week at work I was contacted by someone else who may be another cousin for the two of us! You are right we do make up half the population of St Lucia. In the past we have had huge family get togethers with the purpose to putting together the family tree - but you know how it goes. My brother Greenage is the family historian. I am trying to get him to go back to work ( where is my whip!)on all this because it would be great to know about our family.

Hi Karla

Sorry for taking so long to respond, i've been having problems with my broadband lately.

Well, you really did do your homework! That's right, Aunties Benzy and Lucrisha are both my aunties. My mum, (Lucilla), also lives in St Lucia, (she's currently here on "holiday"!) but now lives in Vieux Fort, near the airport. So you must know Rosie, Joanne and Geraldine.

I know one of uncle Gerald's brothers, I think his name was Duncan, and he was a school teacher, but I don't recall Roland. Do you have any future plans to visit St Lucia. I hoped to go for the Cricket World Cup or Creole day, next year but i'm not sure. I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to obtain further information and see Aunty Nenette and the rest of the family.

A family reunion in London sounds like a good idea.

I'll keep you posted with any developments on the family tree front. Contact me via email and I can arrange to send some photographs of my last visit to Canaries....you may see some faces/places you recognise.

Take care Karla, speak soon!

Lorna x

Hi Lorna,

Hope your having a nice weekend?

Spoke to my Gran....she has confirmed we are in fact related ....your mother has two sisters Aunty Benzy (in Canaries) and Aunty Lucrisha (in London)....I know and have met them both!! I stayed with Aunty Benzy when I visited Lucia in '99!! I don't recall meeting your mum - but no doubt she knows my gran, her 1st cousin!

Aunty Benzy's husband is also my uncle, in another way as he is my mother's dad's (Roland) brother......maybe you know him too!!! He lives by the Catholic church in Canaries......

It is so amazing, that we are so closely related....my gran has 6 children,17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren....so we are equally a big branch on the tree!!!

I am very interested in discovering all branches of the Hippolyte tree and am keen to assist.....I will try to contact Jean Regis as I know she has done a lot of work already...and perhaps we can organise a reunion for next summer....

Take care
Karla

Hi again Karla!

It's all too much to take in!!! Unfortunately I am not familiar with Gene but the names Regis and Albertini both ring bells, I seem to recall the surname Albertini in relation to Aunty Petrica and I also recall being told as a child that we were somehow related to Cyril and his brother, (who's name evades me at the moment). I will have to consult my mum, who is currently in England at the moment.

So far I have managed to ascertain my grandmother had 7 siblings, Antoine, Antoinette (Nenette), Martin, Marcel (my grandmother), Antoine (yes, there were two brothers with the same name!),Ci-cin, Eta and Ida. There may have been more but like me, my mother can talk for St Lucia and the rest of the windward islands, so it was difficult to take it all in.
There were the children of Innocent and Lawrencia Hippolyte.

Have you heard of Aunty Anna, Melanie, (or Melaaanie!), and Aunty Esther?

She also reminded me that Aunty Nenette's birthday was on Monday. I actually met her 2 again two years ago, along with Uncle Antoine (junior) and Aunty Ida, who have both since passed away. The rum shop you referred to, is it opposite the Canaries library? If so, I also went there in 2004.

I am one of 8 siblings so you have a whole branch of the family that are unknown to each other!

I am attempting to collate a family tree, so any information you may have would be greatly appreciated, maybe we can join forces! And yes, I agree, a family reunion is called for!!!

Lorna x

Hi Lorna,

Oh my gosh...it is safe to save that we are related!!

As Aunty Nenette is my great-grandfather's sister...she turned 97 on Monday 18 September......

I am going to consult with my Gran tonight, to hopefully gain a greater insight of our family tree.

Aunty Nenette is also Minorva's dad's sister.....however he sadly passed away April 05

Do you know Gene Regis? she is part of my Great Granmother's family the Regis' and Albertini's - her dad is Harrison who runs a rum shop in Canaries? well Gene orgainsed a Regis-Hippolyte family reunion in Harrow Rd, West London about 5 years ago....think it may be time for another!!!
Also Uncle Harrison is the brother of Aunty Nenette's husband?

Really excited...Karla

Hi Minorva!

My mother's name is Lucilla Williams, (nee Hippolyte). If my calculations are correct you are my mother's first cousin.

After extensively interrogating her (no spotlight or thumb screws were required...she sang like a canary!), it would seem that she had two uncles by the name of Antonio, one of whom I met recently when I was "home" two years ago. She mentioned a story about the two brother's being confused for one another and the younger sibling being retired prior to the older sibling!......It made sense to her! Have you ever heard that story and if so, maybe you can clarify it for me!

It would make sense that we have never met as I was born and raised in East London. I am only really familiar with my mother's sisters and their offspring but it would seem that the Hippolyte's constitute at least 50% of the St Lucian population!

I am also attempting to trace "our" family tree. I have established my grandfather's name was Innocent Hippolyte and then the trail goes cold.

So much to say, but I don't want to bombard you! Maybe you can help fill in some of the blanks?

Lorna x

Hi Karla!

Thanks for the message! You're right, it is difficult to know where to start!!! I'll begin by saying it's good to hear from you. From what you've said it would seem that we are definitely related.

Well, my mother's name is Lucilla, she was born in Canaries. Her mother's name was Marcel, (I'm not sure of my grandfather's name, as he apparently died when my mum was two), I think my grandmother had a brother called Antonio, (I'll need to confirm this and get back to you on that one!)

I recognise some the names you mentioned in your email, namely "Aunty" Petrica and the name Lawrencia does ring a bell!

Whilst we are name dropping, do the names "Silly", "Aunty" Esther and Aunties Anna and Nennette, ring any bells with you. (You'll have to excuse my use of " "'s when using the word Aunty, we wouldn't dare refer to them as anything else when we were younger and I just can't shake the habit!!!)

I'd better stop myself, as you can see I can go on forever! I think we can safely say we are related......what I now wonder is, how?

Lorna x
Hi there.
I am attempting to locate and trace my family history. My mother's name is Hippolyte and she was born on the island of St Lucia, Canaries to be exact. Her mother's name was Marcel.

Although I was raised in East London, I know I have many family connections in the West London area (Paddington).

My ancestors were of the Hipolite Family. They married into the Deans and McCreerys. The Hipolite connection starts with James S. Hipolite born 1800, who married Martha (Clark).
If this is useful please let me know. My email is c_bailey33@yahoo.com
Thank You
Chris

HIPOLITE

That's the US spelling I found today. From a will document, this WELLER daughter had married someone that surname, died before her father, and they couldn't find child James at the time.

Still do not know which of at least 3 sons of Vincent Hipolite, 2 of which have sons named James b bef 1834 g'father's death. One of the 3 son's son, so a grandson of Vincent, spun a good story on Vincent's origins, I'll try to make it short.

He was born France, wealthy, escaped Haiti 1791 because he was a physician, with 7 faithful black slaves, in his own ship, so this fanciful tale goes, sailed to US. This story then picks up in NY state but I think he may have earlier been in LA. The earliest record I'd found so far was 1820 Catharine, Tioga Co NY census, (son) Casimir Vincent Hipolite. That place became 1836 Chemung Co, later/now, Schulyer Co.

I would guess Vincent eventually sailed up the Hudson to about Newburgh and met up with Wellers before say 1818. There's another French, or rather Alsatian about a similar age shows up and migrates to then-Tioga County early, Ashkenas SHAPPEE, maybe they associated, maybe not.

Aaaaanyway I found bits on 2 of the sons, and there's a batch of probably-widow & more kids in yet another spot (Ontario Co, NY) so probably the 3rd brother. Just think, a REAL 3-brothers story. The other 2 were James and Willet, all born ~1800-ish. And then they're all the usual plain dirt farmers after the rich daddy story.

If you have ancestry.com basic subscription you can read the whole tale on Casimir's son William W in AR, but I've related the basics.

Hey Minorva
yes,yes its me (that one Miranda's been informing you all about)!!!!
Had to tell her about your message found it too funny tobe true...especially the 1st line of it.
However, I have passed your email details to Miranda -as she wanted to send you an email....hers is:
Miranda.Jude@courtservice.gsi.gov.uk
i remember the reunion, but unfortuately there were so many faces and names, well Miranda would like us to go out in the next few months....so hopefully we'll meet again.
with regards to the family tree: u r the 2nd person to have made contact & i see we have both communicated to Brenda Hippolyte....sure it will be a long process to find all the Hippolytes.
Uncle Antoino...love him 2 bits....everytime i go down i have to go and chat with him and take in that amazing view. I will be there for Jazz this year can't wait...Your dad gave a message to my gran for his children "can you send down some penicillian for him and your mum" - passed it on to Miranda so she may be dealing with it...
I know the Hippolyte's is hard clan to understand, especially the amount of first and surnames that exist and that have recycled, my brother is also called Antoine he's 17, another one called Conrad 14 and a little sister Junayd who is 6.
I had asked Gene Hippolyte/Regis whether there was going to be another family day, but she said that there wasn't much support for one...i think she should.
As you can see I am a right chatter...so I'll go and leave you be....
ps...i will keep you updated of my discoveries, have you contacted Gene she may be a good person to ask
Karla

Hi Karla,
Now I wonder if you are the same Karla that my niece Miranda Jude is always talking about ( all good things I assure you !)
We have meet before at the family day a few years ago, I don't know if you remember .

How have you been doing with the family tree ? I hope you have had a lot more success than I have.
Yes we are related .

My father's name is Antoine Hippolyte (nicked named Antonio or Ant AA nio ) who is married to Constance Edwards ( both festering away in the St Lucia sunshine as I write this ) . Strangely ,my father's brother (my godfather) was also called Antoine Hippolyte and was your great grandfather . I remember Cata and Tina .
My grandfather's name was Innocent (a misnomer if there ever was one !) Hippolyte and he was married to Lawrencia.
That is as far as I have got . I am attempting to find out where the Hippolyte family , or our strand of it began.

Look forward to hearing from you soon cousin !
