Obit of Richard Hitch 1911

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

RICHARD HITCH
JANUARY 20, 1911

On Saturday (Jan.14) morning at about five o'clock at his late residence at the northwest corner of the village park, occurred the death of Richard Hitch, one of the most aged residents of this community, following a long illness and an enfeebled condition for many years.
Richard Hitch was born in Norfolk county, England, March 3, 1820. On November 23, 1841, he was united in marriage with Mary Gibson. Three children were born to the union, two of whom survive--Henrietta, wife of S.S. Hitch, and Miss Lottie Hitch, both of Chatsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Hitch came to the United States in 1855, and to Chatsworth in 1867, locating on a farm about three quarters of a mile west of this village. In 1895 they left the farm and came to Chatsworth to reside. Mrs. Hitch preceded her husband in death on September 2, 1902, since which time Mr. Hitch had resided with his daughter, Miss Lottie, in the cottage home and everything was done for his comfort that could be done.
The funeral services were held at the Chatsworth Baptist church on Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. Oliver Reed officiating; interment at Chatsworth cemetery.

This would have been my wife's family, if there is any connection at all. The names would be Thomas Wilson Baskin or Maude Mitchell Moser, both in Wilson Co. Tennessee. The newspaper articles came from my wife's Aunt Mary, who is quite a hoarder. Her memory is poor, and she doesn't remember where she got the newspapers or if there is any connection to the family. I have found no connection except that another aunt (Pauline Baskin) moved to Oklahoma and lived in the area.

I'm pretty sure I already have the information in the newspaper, but I too would like to get a copy if it's convenient. The first Hitches in the Guymon were sons of Stephen Kerrick Hitch of Blount Co. Tenn. The arrived in Indian Territory in the last part of the 19th centure. They turned into successful cattlemen and their business still thrives. My g-grandfather, Elias Alexander Hitch was one of the brothers who went west, but he ended up in a less-lucrative profession.

This line is documented in Mike Hitches site: http://www.mikehitch.com
Some additional info. on Mary B. F. Hitch. Her oldest daughter, Caroline, married a Japanese scientist, Jokichi Takemine. She met him when he stayed at the family boarding house in New Orleans. They built an estate in New York at a place called Merriwold. The Japanese emperor gave Takemine the Japanese exposition from the St Louis World's Fair which became the home at Merriwold known as Sho Fu Den. Takemine built huge Japanese gardens around the estate. After he died, Caroline married a friend of her son - about 30 years her junior, and they moved to Arizona where she built a small chapel in memory of her first husband. I assume it is through Caroline's family there that the photos were found where they were. As an aside, Takemine was responsible for the gift of the Cherry Trees in DC.

Hi Mike

Wanted to double check my materials, before getting back to you. I'm not clear on James Hitch's parentage, but the rest seems to be pretty solid. My primary source is some pages copied from a family book kept by John Eugene Ammel(1843 - 1929) who married Julia Jane Hitch 31 July 1870. So far, I've been able to substantiate most of what's in it.

According to the book, Julia Jane was the daughter of James Hitch & Eleanor Jane Waller. Eleanor J. was the daughter of Nelson Waller & Julia A Murphy. James married Eleanor Oct 5, 1846 in DE & they had 3 children: Mary: b: 19 Feb 1849, died 10 Nov 1850; Julia Jane b: 12 Aug 1851 d: 26 Dec 1936 & Isaac b: 14 Nov 1853, died: July 17 1876 in Lawrenceburg IN. James is listed as dying in Lawrenceburg 16 Jan 1874. The book also lists 22 Aug 1872 as the date John E & Julia Jane & their eldest child moved to Lawrenceburg IN. It does not say when James & Isaac Hitch made the move or mention any sister of James Hitch. The Ammels moved back to the East coast & MD somewhere between 1876 & 1879.

In the 1850 census, James 27 is listed with "Jane" 27 & Mary 1. He is listed as a shoemaker & is directly below Nelson Waller 50, Julia Waller, 50 & Eleanor Jane's siblings: Julia AE Waller 16, & William T. Waller, 16. I could never figure out who the Mary 25, was as this was the only census that she was listed in.

James Hitch, Julia & Isaac are also listed with Julia Waller & William T. Waller in the 1860 census. Eleanor Jane died in 1858 of measles & the oldest daughter Mary had died in Nov 1850.

I agree that James & Isaac stayed in DE through 1870. James, Julia & Isaac are listed together in Felton DE. Julia Jane married John Eugene Ammel 31 July 1870 in Felton DE.

On a recent trip to IN, I found 3 references to this family in the Lawrenceburg Press. These are all more chatty items than formal notices. The first is James Hitch's obit Jan 22, 1874. I agree that the "aged" was odd, the family book lists his age at death as 53 years, 3 months, 29 days. The obit does mention his occupation as shoemaker, which agrees with the census. it does not mention Mrs. Ammel, although it does say he was the brother of Mrs. Joseph White.

The second was an 1876 reference to an injury to Johnny Ammel working with wall paper. John Ammel was a painter in all records I've found.

The third was the obit for Isaac Hitch Thurs 20 July 1876 which said he was "Johnny" Ammel's brother-in-law and had died on Monday Morning. Again this fits with the notes in the family book.

Hope that this is some help to you. Let me know what you make of it. Do you still think that James & Mary Hitch are descended from Severn Hitch or from someone else?

Ann Smith

Ann - thanks for the info.! I have been flabbergasted by this connection for a while so this adds some good inference. However, are you sure that the James Hitch of the 1850 DE census and the obit of 1874 are the same? James Hitch is only listed as age 27 in the 1850 census so that means he'd be only about 50-51 in 1874. I know that's kinda old for those days but I would not characterize that as "aged" as described in the obit for James Hitch in Indiana. Plus, I think James Hitch stayed in DE (at least through 1870 census) - Have you been able to locate James Hitch in Indiana for certain? As I say, this line is very elusive...any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mike Hitch

It has taken quite a while, but I finally tracked down the missing connection between Mary Jane Hitch White & James Hitch. The Lawrenceburgh Press for Thursday, January 22, 1874 lists James Hitch's obituary. (Our records show his death as 16 January, 1874) It reads:
"Mr. Hitch, an aged Shoemaker who worked for Mr. Wuest, a brother of Mrs. Jos. White, died a few days since. He lived in Germantown, near Wolfs Grocery."

Unfortunately, this was prior to death certificates in Indiana, so there's no confirmation of their parentage, but it clears up the link between them anyway.

I have also located a marriage record in the Delaware Marriage records here on Ancestry for an October 15, 1850 marriage between Joseph W White & Mary Jane Hitch in Laurel DE. No ages are given, but the timing works as Mary Hitch, age 25 was listed with James Hitch in the DE 1850 census as late as 11 Sept. 1850

Hope this is some help to you. Please let me know if you've found anything else on this line.

Ann

Ruth,
Just read this reply today. I think Elender is buried in the Harris cemetary in Blount Co. where Benjamin was buried. I have found no evidence that she remarried. I did not know that Zephenia moved to MO as my Sam and Elizabeth did in 1857. I am still searching for Benjamin's father who I believe may be James. Am also looking for Sam's father who may be brother of Benjamin since Sam and Elizabeth were cousins. I don't suppose Zeph's family bible disclosed this?

Ron, I am a descendant of Benjamin Harris and Eleanor (Elender, Elenor) and I too, believe that she was a Hitch. Would love to share information and see how we connect. I descend from their oldest child, Zephaniah who married Judy Kidd in Blount Co., Tn., and migrated to Missouri. I do not know where Elenor was buried but am thinking that since Benjamin died 30 years before her, that she most likely remarried. Do you know if that is possibly true? I also know that Benjamin and Elenor had a granddaughter who was named Elender Harris and she married James Wilson Hitch and they named their first son, Eleven. You may already have this information. I have a little information on all of Benjamin and Elenor's children. My family also has Zephaniah's Bible. Please contact me if you'd like to share information, perhaps we can be of some help to each other. Ruth

We inherited a small box of Hitch family papers -- a three-page handwritten history, 1800s receipts and letters -- from my husband's side of the family. It is going to take a while to get these fragile old documents scanned and online. But I wanted to go ahead and post a link to my Kentucky In-Laws page on West Virginia Memories where I've just posted the three-page Hitch history.

The history was written by Carra Sullivan Russell (1869-1949) of Ashland, Ky., around 1949. Mrs. Russell, wife of Harry H. Russell, was a daughter of William Parker Sullivan and wife Sarah Elizabeth Wright of Bracken County, Ky., and granddaughter of Mary Ann Hitch Wright. She also wrote a Sullivan history which is also posted on Kentucky In-Laws.

http://wva.homestead.com/Kentucky-In-Laws.html

Is it possible that her marriage to Joseph was a second marriage?"

I have a birthdate of January 12, 1857 b. Indiana for Flora B. White, the oldest (that I know of) child of Mary J. Hitch and Joseph H. White. She was in the 1860 Dearborn County Indiana Census with her parents. So it is possible that Mary J. Hitch was married to someone else before Joseph White. If Mary J. Hitch was born between 1823 and 1828, she would have been between 29 and 34 years of age when Flora was born.

I posted to Dearborn County message board to see if James Hitch or Isaac Hitch had headstones that had been read and put into the cemetery books there.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ind...

Unfortunately, Dan did not find those names. Could their bodies have been returned to Delaware or MD for burial there?

I looked for WALLER and HITCH in Dearborn Co Indiana in my genealogy.com census index for 1860 and 1870, but did not find either. HITCHs born in Delaware were in Bartholomew, Gibson, and Montgomery Co's which are not adjacent to Dearborn.

I don't have a lot on this line. Most of the information is from my late aunt, which I haven't been able to confirm with primary sources. Some of it is from a book kept by John Eugene Ammel

JAMES HITCH born Sept 18, 1820 Laurel DE married to
ELEANOR JANE WALLER b: March 23, 1822 Salisbury MD
Eleanor Jane died July 27, 1858 in Laurel DE of Measles.

James died January 16, 1874 in Lawrenceburg IN of "Spasmodic Minez Jedes"

James parents are given as SEVERN HITCH and "GOODY" Patsy LYNCH

James & Eleanor Jane had 3 children:

MARY E b: Feb 19, 1849 Laurel DE d: Nov 10, 1850

JULIA JANE b: August 12, 1851 Laurel DE Married JOHN EUGENE AMMEL

ISAAC JOHN b: Nov 14, 1853 d: July 11, 1876 Lawrenceburg IN of "Quick Consumption"

I have not been able to find either obit or gravesite in Lawrenceburg, but I'm in Maryland.

Mike Hitch's research lists James as the son of Severn/Isaac Hitch & Goody Lynch, but no daughters are listed.

There is a tree here that I just found that lists James as the son of Clement Hitch & Aseneth Wilson with a sister Mary Jane born 1825 in DE but it also says she married Stansberry Collison on 4 Jan 1850 in Sussex DE.
Thanks for the reply. This could be the Mary Hitch m. to Joseph White. Don't know. The age and location fit. It is going to take a family letter or newspaper article or obit to make a connection.

Do you know where James Hitch was buried? Possibly could find a burial record or an obit for him with Mary Hitch's married name.

Checking 1880 census, it looks like Isaac Hitch went back east with John and Julia Ammel as I found Isaac Hitch in Laurel Sussex Co Delaware.

There is a Mary Hitch age 25 enumerated with James Hitch (27), his wife (Eleanor)Jane (27) & daughter Mary (1) in the 1850 Sussex Co. Delaware census. James, a widower & his son Isaac, daughter Julia Jane & son-in-law John Eugene Ammel went to Lawrenceburg Indianna in 1872 where he died in 1874. Julia & John returned to Delaware & Maryland some time shortly thereafter between 1876 & 1879.

I don't know what the relationship is, but do you think this might be your Mary?

John and Betty Hitch are my maternal grt g/parents. John was a watch maker and jeweller. My g/mother was Nellie Hitch born 11/9/1899 in Waterfoot Lancashire England. She came to Australia on HMS Barrabool, as far as I know alone. I do not know if she had relatives here in Aust. She would have left UK no earlier than 1924, she married here Thomas Marshall and had 2 children, Edna and Thomas. She passed away in 1936 after suffering terrible burns in a household accident. I know she had siblings in England, but have no names.

If you have any information or recognise these names please respond.

Re: Sarah Hitch's ancestry

I am interested in your William Elgate Jr. married to Sarah Keene, daughter of William and Ann Keene in Somerset County, Maryland. My records show Sarah married to Edward McGlammery who died in Somerset County between 1721 and 1723. In his will he mentions wife Sarah, sons George, Edward and William McGlammery (my ancestor) and next of kin Mary McGlammery and Sarah Elgate. And in 1723 his son George in records sold 150 acres to his grandfather William Keene. Do you have any record of Sarah Keene being married twice or any connection of your Elgate and Keene family to an Edward McGlammery. Thanks. Tom.

Daniel, If you haven't already discovered there is a Mike Hitch in Maryland who has a Hitch website. I don't believe there is anything he doesn't know about the "Hitch" family. He traces us "hitches" two different lines. It is utterly amazing how we are all related. My father was a Daniel Hitch the son of Alfred Hitch, the son of an Elgate Hitch. I have a brother, Dan. My father was born in Ethridge, Tn. but consider Patoka, Indiana as his home. Look up Mike's site and ae Email address, I don't have it handy at the moment. If you have any problems let me know. I will get the addresses for you then.

A Hitch Cousin
Fran
fgbarn3840@aol.com

I wondered if he could be the same person. I have a baptism note for Reading Dockrill (note spelling!) 1st May 1721, dau of James Dockerill (again note spelling!) and Rosemund Riding. James and Rosemund were married 18 Oct 1715 (all events at Bassingbourn, Cambs).

There's also a William Docwra of Bassingbourn marrying a Rebecca Thurley of Whaddon on 12 July 1819, and another William Docwra marrying Sarah Hitch on 16 June 1829 at Bassingbourn. (Not very adventurous with their names were they?!) And then just to round things off there's James Docwra marrying Sarah Dellar on 20 Oct 1849.

I think *everyone* in Bassingbourn must be related to everyone else! ;)

My grandfather James Everett Fields, was born on Canal Street in New Orleans. He spoke four languages. The three above, English and some Spanish.

This picture reminds me of some of our family.
After I found this picture along with one of a lady named Elizabeth, I began trying to find descendents who might want the pictures. I found the following information on ancestry.com. Mary Beatrice Fields was married to Ebenezer Vose Hitch. They had a daughter, Ellmoore Hitch who was born 8 Aug 1880 in Orleans Parish, LA. Mary married Frank Sidney Badger. I see beautiful old pictures in antique stores. Most of them have no identification. I have been doing family research for many years. I have been able to find many of my family members who have pictures of ancestors and I am always thrilled to find a picture of a long lost ancestor. Having a picture helps to bring a "name" alive. It is so sad to see these unidentified old family pictures in antique stores. I always think that somewhere there is a family member who would love to have them. I have a 16 year old granddaughter who collects old pictures of babies. The individuals in the pictures have grown old and probably have died but there is a young lady in Texas who loves them anyway.

Diane:
I show Eleven Hitch b. 1782, s/o Christopher, had a son Eleven b. Oct 1820 who had brother Benjamin b. Oct 5, 1816. Could this be the Eleven who wrote the will?
I am from the Benjamin Harris/Elendor ? line from Blount Co, TN and find so many Harris/Hitch marriages both in Farquir Co. and Blount Co. that it gets very confusing. Eleven, s/o Christopher was appointed guardian of Benjamins Harris's children in 1829. I think that Elendor may have been a Hitch. I have just started trying to sort out the Harris/Hitch mess in Blount Co. and see an almost impossible task.
I will send you a .doc as an e-mail.
Ron Harris
Anne - there is a possibility that the James (witness) could be james bn 1771 married abt 1795 to Elizabeth Thurley bn abt 1773. Elizabeth's grandparents, Joseph Thurley bn abt 1706 and Anne Hitch (no birth year, but buried Nov 24, 1796). Joseph and Anne were married 1729. Joseph and Anne had a son name Joseph who married Reading Docwra 1751. No birth year for her, but found a Redding Docwra buried Feb 1, 1793 listed as a relict of Joseph and a pauper at her death. Cannot connect William Docwra, he might be a nephew of Reading Docwra Thurley. This all occured in Bassingbourn and I agree that so many seem to be inter-related.
