William & Margaret had a son, George William Hitchen, in 1849. George married Jessie Kilgour (nee McColam) on 12.7.1880.Jessie's first husband, Charles Kilgour, died in 1867.George & Jessie had a daughter, Clara, who married Alfred Gadd in 1891. Their son, Charles, is my grandfather.

I have recently discovered that my great great great grandfather was born in sowerby bridge in 1766. He was called william although we spell our name hitchin it seems to change regurlarly in collected information, I woukld be grateful if you have any information that vould help my research

Hi, that is most interesting. I have found a tree in here with her ending up in Parramatta. I didn't realise she came out as a convict. I am pretty certain that my wife is descended from her brother David who also came out as a convict from yorkshire (1837) and settled at Towrang near Goulburn. I have extracted the wedding record for David Hitchen Snr & Mary Lane from www.findmypast.co ( he was a weaver from Warley, she was from Sowerby). the details are on my Meurer tree. I think david Hitchen senior was born at Norland, but after that the trail goes cold.

Mary Hitchen - Australian Convict - possible error in parentage

I have found Australian royalty in the family - convicts transported from England in 1818. One is Mary Hitchen of Yorkshire, who married James Buckley from Lancashire.

There is lots of information on the internet about convict ancestors, Mary included. However, many family historians have repeated what I think is an error in her birthdate and place, and thus have listed incorrect parents.

I found that Mary was removed by the Overseers of the Poor on 14 June 1805 from Crompton in Lancashire and returned to her home town of Warley near Halifax in Yorkshire (while heavily pregnant). It is most likely, then, that Mary Hitchen is the one in the IGI who was born in Warley, not Halifax (she was actually born on 15 Jan 1786 and baptised 26 February 1786 in the Congregational or Independent Church of Warley). Her father is therefore most likely to be David Hitchen and her mother either Mary or Betty (more work needed here). Her parents are NOT Joseph Hitchen and Susan Sagar.

I am hoping to start a discussion with the aim of working out Mary's true parentage, and to find out more about her direct family.

Hi, i'm not sure if you still use this site or not but my great grandmother was living with an Edith Pillpotts in 1911 according to the 1911 census. She was aged two and born in Stottesdon. (Cleobury Mortimer Area). I might be able to help.

Only recently seen your posting for Myles C.D. Hitchen. His daughter Edith Pattie Hitchen married Wilfrid Redman, a cousin of my grandmother. The Redman family had large clothing manufacturers in Leeds and Hebden Bridge.
Would very much like to have a scanned image of Myles if possible. There is an article @ www.leodis.net re. the Hitchen drapers store in Leeds.

My grandfather, Frank Hitchen was the son of John Hitchen and Amanda Woolley. He had a sister, Hannah, who married in England and migrated to South Australia sometime after 1900 I know Hannah had 2 daughters, at least. One daughter, Annie, married a Harold Tremethic and they lived in South Australia. Does anyone know the married name of Hannah? Her descendants in England have not bothered to reply to letters asking for information.

Rev. Myles Coupland Dixon (died 1857), Wesleyan minister and abolitionist, is my ancestor (mother's mother's father's mother's father). This is the first time I have seen his name fully quoted, although there are references to ex-slaves in the West Indies being given his name. I wonder what connection this implies?

I have discovered a wonderful picture of this man dated July 1906, while going through my in-laws estate.
It is a professional portrait done in Leeds.
I found him on the 1901 census. He was a draper.
He married Jemima Lucas in 1879, Sheffield.
So far, I have not found a connection to my family.
If anyone is connected to this man and would like his picture, I would be happy to scan it.

My great-grandfather on the maternal side, CHARLES ALONZO HITCHEN was born in Salford in 1847 to WILLIAM HITCHEN and MARGARET (nee CORCORAN). Margaret was born in 1811 in Dublin - but that's all I know - and I have no further information at all on William.

I think that they had at least 3 other children - William, Florence and Edith. Margaret was a widow by the time of the 1861 census.

Is anybody else researching Hitchin's in this area? Any hints would be very gratefully received!

Possible? My great-grandfather James (Feb. 14, 1853 - Aug. 8, 1901) shows on the 1881 Census:living at 10 Quakers Yard in Standish With Langtree, in Lancashire, England. James Hitchen is married (to Alice), and 28 (confirming his 1853 date). He was born in Standish, Lancashire, England and his occupation is coal miner. I don't know anything about his siblings. I wonder if his father was also called James - his mother was said to be called Betty (born about 1823, died May 3, 1886). The names Wigan, Standish, Orrell, Chorley etc. appear for many of the records. Beyond that I know nothing? Joanne

I sure wish I knew! I really don't know beyond my great-grandfather James Hitchen (February 14, 1853 - August 8, 1901) in Standish. I don't know his siblings at all. Or even for sure who HIS parents were - though I think his father may have been James and his mother may have been Betty.

will send you some personal info re your grandma and grandpa (ivy hirst and edwin booth) as my grandma (violet (whiteley) hirst) was very close friends with Ivy and that is how she met my papa - joseph leonard hirst - others in the family were jack, elizabeth, connie, pricilla, stanley, and roland. Grandma wrote down some memories of her childhood and younger years and Ivy is mentioned quite a bit.She also kept is contact with everyone over the years and travelled back to englad three times - once with my aunty margaret (hirst) bishop. she writes about her trips back home.

Most of the info that I have is what my grandma collected and I have intended to get round to putting it in some sort of order, but as yet I haven't. If I have some spare time over the weekend, this might actually spur me on to do something with it.

James Hitchen was born in London, England in 1808. He came to the USA in 1833 and married Euena Buchanan in about 1834. They probably m. in Deleware. Their children are: Sarah Ann, James, Euena, William, Santiago and Grace Emma. Sarah m. Joseph Glattz and had one son, adopted, Harry Rowe. They lived in Illinois. I have no info on James, Euena, or William. Santiago m. Ester Permelia Dake and they had 2 children: William Henry and Euena Maud. William m. Eleanor Elizabeth Satchwell. Euena m. Thomas Sutton. They moved to Oregon. Grace Emma is my 2nd great grandmother. She m. Robert Henry Jones in Illinois in
1866 and they were in Colorado by 1870.

James was a physician and businessman. He died in Rhode Island. He spend much time going back and forth to England, also traveled to Mexico.

His parents were either David and Annie Hitchen, or William and Sarah Hitchen. I am inclined to believe it was William and Sarah, simply because they had children with these names.

I don't think we connect, but if we do I would be happy to share info with you.

Just started looking for Hitchen...I have a Ben and Dora or Dorothy came from England I think about 1900...1920 in Rochester NY children Ben Arthur Hitchen, Jr., Amanda, Emily, Harry. I know that Amanda eventually became Amanda Sulllivan. 1930 Census has Ben, Dora son Harry in Long Beach,. NY Nassau County. I found Ben in 1891 Census had brother Tom. Saw msg re Hitchen I just started. Wondering if there is a possibility if your Hitchen is related to mine. I have a Ben Hitchen and Dora Hitchen wi one son Harry in Long Beach NY in the 1930 Census. Census says her parents were from Germany. 1920 Census have them in Rochester NY and Dora is listed as Dorothy, children Ben Arthur Hitchen, Jr., Amanda, Emily Harry. Should say Ben and Dora were born in England. I am desperate for any information at all...Thanks Lynne.

My Hitchens originate in the Wigan, Pemberton, Orrell areas and were involved in coal mining, owners and miners. Daniel, 1876 to 1950 was my grandfather, his father was John 1857 to 1905, his father Peter, 1834 to 1904 who was a "property owner and builder". Now it gets hazy, I think Peter's father was Reuben from Wigan, born in 1797. Any chance we are the same branch. As well as tying into the Hitchens further back, I am also interested in the female branches, from my grandmother Lottie Brown to Peter's wife, Alice King.

My grandparents were Walter Hitchen and Lily M. Harrad, married in Nov., 1919 in Barford, Counties of Nottingham and Derby. My father, now deceased, once told me that his father, Walter, was from Sheffield, and that he may have had siblings. Interestingly, Walter and Lily had daughters named Ann and Mary. Do you think there might be any connection between my grandfather and the person you are seeking information on?
